Nokia 6600 Slide Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: The Nokia 6600 Slide is a slide design 3G phone with an excellent 3.2 megapixel camera and a large hi-res OLED display. It offers video calling, an MP3 player, an FM radio, expandable memory and Bluetooth. You can even silence the phone just by giving it a tap. This is an easy-to-use phone without some of the more advanced features. Battery life could be better, as could reception, and the reliability of the phone seems to be quite poor.

Review: October 2008. Updated September 2009.

You might think that the Nokia 6600 Slide is an upgraded version of the 6500 Slide. But that would have been too obvious. In fact it has almost precisely the same list of features as the 6500 Slide, just a different design. Whereas the 6500 Slide was big, metallic and square, the 6600 Slide is compact, shiny and curvy. You could think of it as the feminine counterpart to the 6500 Slide. Although admittedly it doesn't really look very feminine in the glossy black finish pictured here. In fact it looks like a miniature N96.

It's quite a bit smaller and lighter than the 6500 Slide, but still quite heavy to hold. We're aren't sure why, as the casing is plastic and the battery isn't that powerful. The keys are quite small too, so watch out if you have extra large fingers. However the screen is a good size (2.2 inches) and is a beautiful OLED display with 16 million colours and QVGA resolution - it's a stunner in fact. You'll need to watch out for fingerprints on the glossy finish, but apart from that we have no complaints about the way the 6600 Slide looks. Build quality could be a bit more solid, and we wouldn't recommend dropping it from a great height onto a hard surface.

The camera is better than average, with 3.2 megapixels, autofocus and a double LED flash. It produces excellent quality results, very similar to the 6500 Slide in fact. It's also got a competent video camera that can record in VGA resolution, and can make video calls. The media player is very good too, with support for all the main file formats, plus an FM radio too. The built-in memory is rather sad - just 20 MB - but Nokia have provided a 512 MB memory card in the sales package, which is enough for around 125 MP3 tracks, or a couple of hundred songs in AAC format. You can always replace this with your own card if you want more storage space, and in fact the 6600 Slide will accept microSD memory cards right up to a whopping 16 GB.

The phone is a competent internet device, with 3G for fast downloads (although no HSDPA), the excellent Opera Mini browser, plus Macromedia Flash Lite 3.0 installed. That beautiful big screen is a treat for viewing websites as well as photos or videos. Email is supported, with attachments, but no attachment editor - this is no BlackBerry after all. There's no GPS, but Nokia Maps is installed, so you can find your way around, provided that you already know where you are!

One nice feature that's new in the 6600 Slide is the ability to respond to touch. By tapping the phone, you can silence the ring or reject a call, and you can also tap the phone to silence the alarm. This is definitely a step up from the 6500 Slide - users were more likely to whack that phone in frustration rather than give it a gentle tap!

We hesitate to say that the 6600 Slide is an upgrade to the 6500 Slide. It's really more like Nokia decided to have another go at exactly the same phone, but do it differently. Both the 6500 Slide and the 6600 Slide have more than their fair share of problems. The biggest complaint from our users is that the backlight switches off after just 10 seconds, making the phone very frustrating to use in the dark. There have been complaints about the phone freezing and cutting off in the middle of calls too. Another problem, which is basically a stupid design decision, is that the speaker is located at the back of the phone, so it's hard to hear it ring. The battery life is poor too. On the plus side, the phone looks nice, and may be suitable for buyers who aren't looking for every latest feature, but are willing to sacrifice some of the more high-tech functions in return for a phone that's easier to use. The price reflects this too, and you should be able to pick it up on some cheap contracts. Just beware of the problems associated with the 6600 Slide - we wouldn't recommend taking a 24 month contract with such a phone.

The new Nokia 6600i Slide has an improved camera and a brushed metal finish and is a better phone than the 6600 Slide.

Features of the Nokia 6600 Slide include:

  • 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, double LED flash and 8x digital zoom
  • Video camera (VGA, 15 fps / QCIF, 30 fps) with 4x digital zoom
  • 3G video calling (QCIF resolution, 15 fps)

  • Flight mode
  • Quadband (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) plus dual band 3G (WCDMA 850/2100)

Good points: Smart looking phone, good camera. Bad points: Bad reception, short back-light on-time, fragile - my LED screen cracked after I sat on the phone awkwardly (I only weigh 12 stone!). I have another screen on order for £13 which I'm going to replace myself to save a bit of dosh. In many ways, this phone isn't as good as my old 6300. The 6600 slide would appear to be one of the bum marques that a company (even as reputable as Nokia) occasionally come up with. I can't really recommend this phone, and am eagerly awaiting my next due upgrade!

The phone was pretty sleek and handy. quite the opposite of what you can tell from the pictures of the phone on the internet. the 110 gms weight feels just a bit across the line given its compact form factors, nevertheless not a big issue. the weight makes the phone feel all the more solid in hand. felt it s worthy buy. P.S: the memory supported o the phone is 4G instead of the 16G mentioned in the review.

I hate this phone. I got this as a birthday gift and within the first call i noticed its flaws. 1. It doesnt pick up signals as well as my old sony k750i. Call clarity is seriously compromised. 2. The speaker at the back is not good enough. I miss all the calls because I cant hear the phone ring. Miss the alarm in the morning also :( 3. Camera is a total let down 4. Everytime i use loudspeaker, i have to restart the phone to use the normal speakers. 5. phone gets really hot after long usage. 6. The back pane is a fingerprint magnet. Hard to keep up the shiny look. 7. No back button, or C button like my old k750i. Have to go through long menu options to delete one message. 8. Battery is pathetic. Hardly lasts on hour of continuous talking.

I do like this phone and would recommend it to others. Styling is great and very compact. I have some gripes - the backlight times out too quickly. The call volume is a bit quiet and the handbook doesn't explain how to increase it (you have to press the top of the blue outer ring on the navigation button, while in a call) also my inner screen broke after 6 months of normal use, no damage to outer screen, so it has gone back to be repaired).

Can anyone help? I recently (25/6/09) upgraded my phone & signed up 2 a new contract for 2yrs. Having decided on the 6600 slide i had only had it 10-14 days and the screen went completely unreadable. I used it in the morning, put it on my desk at work. picked it up a few hrs later to txt & the screen had coloured lines all over it. Took it back to the shop who have sent it off & they have said i dropped it! I didn't drop it. they have said it will be £50 to repair. They have said these screens are delicate! well how would it last 2 years if they are that delicate?! Does anyone know if i have any come back?

The only thing i dont like about it is the call quality sometimes, but overall i am so glad i got this phone.. Its simple and easy to use. It actually contains loads of good features that newer and more expensive ones don't. I can't see how people would slate this phone, I know people that have it and its lasted them a long time without breaking. You shouldnt listen to people who have just picked up faulty ones, because it just depends on your luck these days really. This phone is a good phone.

have had nokia phones since mid 90's and always been happy with them, wanted a nice slim phone that would fit into my pocket as a replacement for my 6300 and this seemed to fit the bill. Upgraded in April and have had nothing but hassle with it, internet browser doesn't work, keep getting check info service error message and loses connection with the mastin areas I normally have no problems with, this i have never had in the past from any of my phones. I have tried to download upgrades for it from the Nokia web site but no joy whatsoever. Have just returned it to T mobile for them to sort out as I feel either my handset is a defective one or the phone is just useless, hopefully the handset is defective. If it still plays up i may have to resort to placing it somewhere uncomfortable in the sales assistant who recommeded it as an upgrade handset

Nighmare of a phone. Like others I cannot believe that the screen goes blank after 8 seconds, so you have to keep sliding it to see anything, day or night. A 'feature' supposedly. I've had mine since January. It turns itself off now and again, and sometimes the screen wobbles and goes blank mid text. To cap it all, I tried to delete my inbox and sent items, and it kept freezing after about 20. T-Mobile shop said it was a software problem. Tried to download update at home from Nokia- no joy. T-Mobile shop then tried and failed. There is a fault with this they declared. So today it has been sent back for repair, but based on some of the reviews here, I'm not convinced this will be the end of the matter. I've always liked Nokia, but this has been the worse.

I just got a black 6600 slide as a quickfire replacement for my ultra reliable LG Chocolate. On the second day I had amassed a long line of complaints... the screen going dark in ten seconds is a huge gripe that cannot be resolved it seems. Also, the text message writing screen is fairly futile. it annoys me a lot that I can't pick small case letters at the start of sentences, and that picking numbers is such an awkward exercise - which also applies to typing the number into the 'send to' box - it assumes I will want to type a name in. When you close the screen, or when it goes dark, it's still active. that means you can hit away at the buttons and not know! It doesn't automatically lock on the downslide (as the LG did). The centre OK button is framed by a rather harsh alloy ring in blue that does not match in with the smooth black cover of the phone. Being metallic it's quite sharp both physically and in action when pressed. The music feature is pretty good, but I do wish it was a little more instinctive in its layout. The speaker on mine doesn't seem able to go above 60% without distortion, so I've been loathe to try it out at any higher volume. The memory came full of stupid frames and themes and far too many pathetic ringtones that all to go. Some of the features and nearly every menu have links to online access and that's not what I want from a phone, and I cant get rid of them. I cant stop it from sending a service reply after every text, which gets a stronger vibration than the actual text arrival! The battery isn't that bad, but I've seen some last longer. And the cover - stainless steel I think? - shows up every single fingerprint ever. My cover is already marked just from being in my pocket, and I have to wipe it every time I use it which is not cool with me. Oh and did I mention it froze TWICE on the second day I had it? Currently online looking for another LG. I knew there was a good reason I stopped using Nokias after my 8210.

A small, simple, solid phone. I got this phone last December - and its handling pretty well. A few minor set backs: the speaker on the back [hard to hear the alarm/incoming calls/texts] but its possible to just flip the phone over when unoccupied, then you can hear. Backlight is short lived, especially for reading texts - but helps develop quick reasding skills! However the camera is excellent, there's a great music player/FM radio and the tapp feature is VERY handy, its also very easy to use and has a good solid feel. I don't know what this problem with the vibration feedback being week is, but mine is good enough. I would definately recomend this phone to anyone.

Although it's not a completely horrific phone when you first buy it, it digresses quickly! I bought it at Christmas for £130 (which was with a £40 discount) It now randomly decides to turn the screen blank for up to 5 minutes at a time...not turning off, just a black screen. The back light is also an issue when you're reading texts! Sometimes it decides that it's not going to connect calls even though you have full reception. The battery life is not amazing. You have to wipe it everytime you pick it up and can't put it in your pocket with anything else as it has a tendency to scratch. It is yes another Nokia that has let me down over the past few years as they all seem to break after a few months. Quite good camera though.

I spent ages trying to fix this problem, then I went on-line for help - I saw many complaints of the same nature - and no remedies! This is a very bad feature to this model and I am taking it back to Carphone Warehouse this afternoon to be exchanged!

Wish I'd never bought this phone. You cant keep it clean for a start. The signal strength is great until you actually use the phone, when it decides to disapear alltogether either before call connection or during. Same applies to sending sms. The front of the phone scrathes very easily, so avoid having anything in the same pocket (or bag). The camera is pretty good mind, but thats about all. Only buy this phone as an ornament, or a spare. It has almost put me off nokias, and would have done had I not had some great nokias in the past.

After reading some of the reviews by other people, i was nearly put off buying my 6600 but decided to go for it anyway! First off i think there are a lot of complaints being made that are simply not true. I previously had a sony walkman phone so i was a bit worried the sound quality or volume wouldn't be up to scratch but it's the same if not better in my opinion. Some people have commented the ringtones are too low and you'll miss countless messages/calls. Again, not true. If anything, they're louder than my old w610i and it made me laugh to wonder who could possibly miss a call at that volume. The phone looks and feels good and the only problem i can find in this sense is that the screen does become a little bit wobbly after some use. I've only had my phone a week now and i can already feel it moving as i use the front menu. Other people have mentioned the phone freezing and i have already experienced this although, to be fair, it may have been because i was being impatient and using the menu too quickly. Overall i'd say it's a nice, good looking phone. The sound quality is good but i probably wouldn't recommend it if you care about more than looks. With the screen already becoming loose and the freezing issue i've got a feeling i'm going to have some trouble with this one...

I bought this phone in January on an 18 month contract with three network. I have read alot of these reviews and found that alot of people have experienced the same problems as myself with this phone. My handset is heavily used as i'm more prone to text than i am to call, so the texting feature is used alot. It is clear that this phone isn't capable of such usage and freezes alot. I have had many screen disfunctions - the picture becoming distorted and a plain white screen, meaning i have to take out the battery and put it back in. I also think it is silly to put the speaker on the back, impossible to know whether you have a text or an incoming call when placed on a duvet for example. I think a negative is that it lets you store as many text messages as the phone can take because it means my sentbox has totalled to over 7000 messages! I have tried deleting them and it gets to about 11 messages and freezes! I tried to restore it back to factory settings and it just freezes and after about half an hour tells me "restoration has failed" The music player feature is good, although there are no volume buttons on the side of the handset which is a bit annoying. I have had many phones including the sony ericsson w810i, and i feel that this phone was much better quality for what it was! If i do manage to get a different phone anytime soon, i'll definitely go for a sony ericsson as they seem much more reliable at the moment! Nokia has let us down with this phone.

Bought this phone at the weekend, and I actually love it. Read all these reviews before I bought it and they almost put me off. But i've found the ring tones are loud enough, you can set notes to the background, it hasn't switched off randomly and the vibrate is strong enough. The backlight is fine (and lights up the number keys too) and the tapping sensor is an added bonus. The only thing I would say is this phone is probably better off for people with smaller fingers, just because of the size of the keys. The phone is very compact and nice to look at, would recommend it for definite!

Superbly built device. Probably the best built feature phone along with the 6500 Slide on the world market. The quality of the materials is outstanding. Add to that its technologically advanced internals and you have a very attractive device. Strongly recommended.

I've had this phone for a few months now and I've found a few big faults. The vibrate and ringing tone volumes are feeble, you can't set notes to display in standby (something I loved about my previous Sony Errikson) and I have had to send it back twice now for a new model due to freezing and switching off randomly. One more time, and I am requesting a new phone. Maybe I am just unlucky, but i wouldn't reccomend taking a chance on it.

Looks good but performs badly. Sadly fails to work properly as a phone. Extremely poor performance in weak signal areas. Nothing but complaints from people at the other end about it cutting in and out. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. What a waste of money. Won't waste further words with all the other complaints. My previous Nokia works far better and I think I'll revert to it. At least I can get a signal!!!!!

I got this phone as an upgrade and must admit i'm a bit disappointed, I've been a Nokia fan for years but the 6600 slide is just not up to their usual standard. For starters the sound is just not loud enough, I don't live with my phone in my pocket, sometimes it's in the bottom of my bag and i can't hear it at all, i get missed calls and txts from friends telling me to answer my phone. Also, there is no backlight for the key-pad, useless if you're in a night club and with the keys being so small it's easy to make a mistake.Wouldn't really recommend it!

I love the look, feel, and its ease of use the main problem I am having is the constant humming noise that you can hear when you put the phone to your ear (I believe its the battery). I have gone into Carphone Warehouse & they kindly tried out 2 more phones but it was still there. I can't believe noone else has commented on this. If you can hear the buzzing your mobiles make whilst charging & don't like it - then this phone is not for you. had this phone for a month now, its a nice phone but too heavy. Also it is idiotic that they have put the speaker on the back of the phone so when its next to you on the table you dont hear it ring as the speaker is underneath. My worst complaint is the buttons, the top 2 on the left and right directly below the screen are impossible to press. These buttons are used to clear txt, stop alarm and activate loud speaker and 9 times out of 10 it cuts the call or closes your message mid txt and puts it in the drafts folder. Very annoying when you are used to sending txts fast. the tap feature does work but you have to tap pretty hard and im not sure why you would ever need to use this feature anyway. i think the fold version of this phone would be better.

Rubbish phone. 'Upgraded' from a SE K800i to this one and am very dissappointed. Main features I wanted were an easy to use phone, a few games (free of cost of course!) and a decent camera. The 6600 slide scores a zilch for all these. Phone calls keep getting disconnected automatically, speaker volume is really weak, vibrations virtually non-existent, not easy to text as the phone is really small and the keys don't stay illuminated for more than a few seconds, no proper free games included (cf. SE K800i which has atleast 3-4 interesting games included with the handset i.e. no need to download), the camera resolution is pathetic and the so-called "double" LED flash is very weak. Photos therefore invariably blurry when shooting indoors or in low light.

For Liv - I don't own the 6600 Slide but I do own the 6500 Slide and had the exact same problem with the time of messages received. They were always an hour out of sync. This is because you always need to alter your timezone (for daylight saving or travelling to another country) instead of the actual time. So if your messages are displaying as received an hour late, alter your timezone to the one before it. For example, if it's currently set to GMT+1 then change it to GMT. When our clocks go forward, you need to apply the same rule - alter the timezone and not the actual time because you will get the same problem again. Hope this helped! (I hope the editors print this - I know it's not a review of the actual phone, but unfortunately there was no e-mail address provided by Liv, therefore this is the only way I can help! I've given the phone 4 stars based on appearance and features list - looks pretty good but not keen on going from my solid, metal 6500 to the plastic casing of the 6600!)

I had high hopes for this phone but was sadly disappointed. I might have a dodgy one, but I find the volume FAR too low for my liking. The ringtones are very weak, if you have the phone in your pocket it is very easy to miss a call because it it hard to hear it, and the vibration is almost non-existant, so you can't even 'feel' the phone ringing. I also think that the 'in call' volume is too low. I have raised the volume to the maximum, ( by pressing 'up' on the D pad when I am receiving a call ), but still find it difficult to hear the caller. I've just received a text message as I write this review, and I didn't hear the message tone or feel it vibrate, it is THAT bad !

My biggest gripe has to be the ridiculously weak vibration, making 'silent' mode a waste of time. Pros: Voice Clarity, Looks great, Good Camera, Sleek, Small, Light, Radio, Menu. Cons: Finger print magnet, Speaker at the back, so if its on a table u wont hear it as well Very weak vibration, you will miss alot of calls as you can hardly feel it, Backlight is a pain as it only stays on for about 15seconds! Low ringing tones. Can't send mp3 via bluetooth to the phone. D-pad not great.

It might seem like a long time but its not. what ever you were doing with the phone the backlight would switch off the screen would go black, you'd press a button for the light to go back on and end up pressing the wrong button and cancelling out what you are doing, the first phone would switch itself off completely and I had to remove the battery before it would let me switch it back on, the replacement had the same backlight issue.
