Nokia 6510 Review
Phone rating:
Review: February 2003.
The Nokia 6510 was launched in Spring 2002. It's a great-looking phone, available
in a choice of colours, similar to the popular Nokia
8310 in many respects, but with a smarter appearance, reminiscent of the
more exclusive 8850. In keeping with the best of Nokia traditions, its advanced
features are made easy to use through excellent design. Reliability can be a
problem.
Features of the Nokia 6510 include:
- WAP (GPRS)
- High speed data (up to 43.2 kb/s)
- Hi-resolution 4 line display
- Predictive text messaging
- Picture messages
- 35 ringtones plus 10 downloadable ringtones, plus composer
- Phonebook with 500 names
- FM radio
- X-press on covers
- Voice activated dialling
- Speed dialling
- Call waiting, call hold, call divert, call timer
- Stopwatch
- Data capability (built-in infra-red modem)
- Clock, Calendar, 4 games
- Size: 97 x 43 x 20 mm
- Weight: 84g
- Battery standby: 350 hours
- Battery talktime: 2 - 4 hours
- Vibration alert
- Dual band

phone comes with a builtin fax modem. Not even the nokia ppl aware of
this. Really feel shame for thier knowledge of this phone and yet selling

This is what i call the greatest phone at all times. Not many of such

wall, it flew out of my pocket and bounced around on the concrete going
40km/h on my moutainbike, and dropped it incountable times. Even ink
from a leaking pen leaked in, and everything but the battery is working
just fine. Bought it used about 4-5 years ago, and battery life has
decreased alot. Now looking around for a new modern phone, but will
always carry it around with me because of its reliability. Have the
same problem with shutdowns during sending sms messages, but even then
i can live with it...i need a new cover for it, but maybe ill keep it
just for nostalgia. The durability of this phone is just amazing...

to get it in my country, then the 7250 came out and i got it. I was
still using my 6510. Then i bought the 6600, then the 6670 followed
by the N90. I'm soon getting either the N73/N93 OR N80.I have been using
the best phones of the time but 1 thing i can simply say is that those
phones were the best when they came out and so they were the best at
their times... But the 6510 is the best of ALL TIMES!! I'm really looking
forward for getting 1 for my girlfriend. It's a pity u don't get a new

it has limited memory. Can store only upto 150 messages. But though

Okay I cannot belive some of the reviews that I have read about this
phone. This is one of the best mobile phones I have ever used, it's
small, sleek, has good memory for messages, ringtones, and lots more.
Yes there is a software fault with some of the phones but once sent
away to get the software upgraded this shouldn't happen again. As for
the names not showing up in the inbox or when receiving calls this happens
when the same number is stored twice, either twice on the sim, twice
on the phone, or once on the phone and once on the sim with both memory's
turned on. Just make sure there is only one occurence of this number.
This was also one of the first mobile phones to have the ability to
copy contact data from the sim to phone and vice versa and to allow
numerous contact details under one name. For the price and age of this
model of the Nokia I would call it the best on the market. I had the
6510, got a new phone, then after not liking my new phone went back
to the 6510 a year later again.

I reckon this is one of the best models from the Nokia stable. I've
been using this model for last 3 years. Solidly built, it packs in loads
of features. Keypad is pretty cool. The navigation keys resembles the
SWATCAT cartoon character, something which I get to hear once in while.
With 500 addressbook entries and with as many as 5 details for each
entry, this is one feature that I've really used a lot. The FM radio
and the 20 preset stations is another great feature. The radio sounds
awesome. The only downside is the ringtone volume, which even when set
at the highest, is not as loud as the newer models. On the whole, this
is a great phone. Sadly, I've not been able to find a replacement model.
I vote it a deserving 5 star rating.

in a cold environment for a while it actually slows down and takes several
seconds to do anything. It's a nice small and neat phone and I like

Ok, so I've had this phone for 2 years now. It's easy to use, the keypad
is great for typing sms-messages and even if you have large hands/fingers,
its comfortable (I had an 8850 for a while and the keypad on that is
worthless.) the phonebook is great, even if you have 200+ names in it,
works like a charm and fast too. the sms-inbox however gets slow as
hell when its full... I've dropped it on a few occasions and it has
quite some user damage now, but come on, what do you expect after 2
years of daily use! the battery still works fine, which is a big surprise
to me. (just only reload it when its really empty, not half full.. it
wastes your battery life) Now the downsides. after all the abuse it
had, it sometimes gives me 'insert SIM' but when I turn it off and on
again, the problem is solved. it gets on your nerves though because
it allways happens when its in your pocket, and you could have missed
some calls and stuff. Another thing it likes to do is shut off completely,
once again, only when its been in my pocket for a while. Maybe theres
some bad contacts on the battery or sim holder, I don't know. I'm getting
it replaced now with a nokia 7270 which I ordered two weeks ago. (still
isn't in stock yet.) overall, it's a great phone, it lasted for 2 years.
it has great features (for it's time that is..) and its easy to use,
it served me well. I'm giving it a 4 star rating because it's not completely
perfect but it's definetly the best phone I owned untill today.

It has an ergonomically designed keypad. I love using it. Also, it has
smart shorcut commands which is very useful. My phone was accidentally
submerged to water and went many falls. Guess what, it survived! I'm
still using it. However, I got a little problem with the reception now
(most probably with the accidents it encountered). For the downside,
it takes a year when re-opening your inbox if it's already full. I'm
planning to buy a mobile phone with built-in camera.

I have had this phone for 18+months now. I love it, best phone i have
had so far. I have had 4 Nokias before this, and recently got a Sharp
GX30i. Biggest complaint is that 6 months ago, every now and again when
you press the Send button for SMS the phone resets (no PIN required).
This is quite annoying but you can save it to the outbox before trying
to send. I have 200-300 SMS messages stored in custom folders and 200+
contacts with multiple details. SMS can also be given a name like filenames
on your computer. To read messages in custom folders you need to Open
them which takes a little time, then a little wait as it Opens the selected
message. It's got a great send to many option, just hit the left key
for each person you want to send it to in your contact list. There are
customizable templates and you can also send picture messages. It can
erase all read messages in folders which is handy when you start running
out of space and don't have to delete 50 messages manually. The software
is great...when it works. I use IR to connect and it is a bit tempermental
with occasional dropouts. I set my IR dongle to 9600bps with 5ms interval,
turn on IR on the phone, press New synchronisation and it takes 15+
minutes to synchronise with Outlook Express. Very small annoyance is
that the entire name is stored as surname field in Windows Address Book.
It can download most data from phone (incl SMS) and store them as Comma
Separated text files (CSV) which open in Excel. SMS are sorted according
to the folder name but it is hard to decipher as sometimes sender and
message names are in different columns. Software can also backup and
restore settings on the phone and other Nokias wich use the same software.
Menus are reasonably fast and very intuitive. You press the left button
for most things and the right button to cancel. The "call" button dials
or activates a send, the "end call" button exits all menus instantly.
The power button can be used to change profiles. There is a scroll bar
on the right in menus so you know how many items are in the current
menu, it's really handy. But it does not appear when browsing contacts.
I have 200+ contacts and it is very easy to search or browse to find
the right person by name. This is an excellent business phone with lots
of memory. Each contact can have multiple details like Name, Mobile,
ome, Office, Fax, Email, Address, Note, and more. This is why i bought
the phone to replace my 6210 - big memory, multiple details, small size.
The screen is a light blue, not as bright as the 8310 however. The shell
is easy to open and change. There are very few after market products
for this phone, and they are bad quality and don't fit properly. Most
will be designed for 8310 and fit this phone. I highly advise you DO
NOT get aftermarket accessories for it, one case damaged my volume button
and i needed to get it replaced. Battery is great lasting about a week.
My 18mth battery may show 3 out of 7 bars but can drop to zero in one
2 min call, so I charge every 3-5 days. The batteries are only rated
for about 1 year, as are most Li-Ion which are light and pwerful but
shorter life than heavier NiMH. NetMon cannot be enabled on this phone
using IR or standard data cable, DCT4 generation Nokia phones apparently
can't. They probably have disabled it in the factory and you need special
extra hardware and software. It has a mono FM radio which is pretty
good. 3 min voice recorder and multi-function stopwatch and countdown.
I really like the calendar, entries are categoriesd (eg Call, Meeting,
Birthday) and can be repeated, auto-deleted, alarmed. But they cannot
be post-poned (like on the Nokia 8810). It has a problem with entries
aroung 12am or 12pm because the rules it uses to check before/after
warnings is faulty. For example sometimes a 11pm - 1am event cannot
be alarmed . You cannot also schedule events in the past. You can copy
and move events around, and editing is really easy - just keep hitting
the left key to scroll through each detail and save. Unfortunatly the
calendar does not have predictive text entry. The ringtones can be very
loud as it has a separate buzzer. Speaker volume is average. You can
also upload your own ringtones to the phone using software, there is
no ringtone editor. Vibrate is average. Seems robust as it has survived
a few short 1m falls, it is alwyas in a leather case/belt clip. GPRS
works OK, but in its nature is slow and still expensive. The software
has even been designed for internet shopping with a secured Wallet,
but you can't use it in real life because it is not wdely accepted.
There are 5 profiles that you can fully customise. Also has user groups
for selective ringing. Use a computer to change the user group icons.
Adding users to groups is easy and fast (press left button for each
person you want to add to current group such as Friends or Family.)
No 1 is reserved for voicemail so you have 8 speed dials. There is no
in-call timer, but you are told when you end the call. A few nice games
- snake 2 (and 2 player at that), pairs 2, space impact and pinball.
Also supports game services (extra levels which are quick to download,
and check world wide high scores) and nokia club which is now defunct.
Overall it's a fantastic phone with lots of powerful features. It is
aimed as a business phone so it is missing some fun features found on
the more "trendy/toy/young teen" nokia phones such as bright lights,
ringtone composer, etc. Instead it has lots of memory, great contact
list, calendar, GPRS, impressive messaging functions, and you can sync
with a computer to get everything out of it.

This is one of the best mobile phone I've had. It is ridiculously small
but very usable, even for people with big hands and fingers like me.
It has GPRS, a great-sounding FM radio, has an excellent memory, a unique
backlight color and a higher resolution screen than its Nokia 8310 sister.
Unfortunately, I traded this for my current Nokia 3650, which is great
too. I miss my 6510 though.

dont know what half these reviewers are talking about. I have had at
least 5 nokias in my time (mainly due to theives) and this is ok for
someone who last had a 3210 or some old brick like that. But anyone
in the know must know it continously says "insert Sim card" after a
few knocks. Switches off randomly before you get to send a text and
then resets itself and deletes your texts. Takes AGES to load up your
inbox of texts if there are only 10 in there. ITs absolutely awful -
steer clear and get the 8310 - does all the same this does but none
of the above flaws

I had the
6510, got a new phone, then after not liking my new phone went back
to the 6510 a year later again.

send it. Now, One and a half years later I can't set my alarm. After

Had the phone for almost a year and it has been a fairly trouble free
time. The phone is small enough to stuff in your pocket but robust enough
to not feel like it will snap in two if you sit on it! I swapped the
covers straight away as I thought the champagne colour was pretty naff
- it's now purple! Was worried about the smallness and ability to use
the keys with my not-so slender fingers, but it is very well laid out
- and the predictive text is xcellant. Battery life could be better,
though - maybe this is the trade of for such a small phone? It has occasionally
spontaneously turned itself off, but restarts without complaint and
I've occasionally had to wait for 1/2 minute before the SIM cards ready,
but that's been about all that's gone wrong. It's tough - been drop
kicked several time (by accident) and the cover is now looking decidely
shabby, but it's easy to replace & would look like new again. My contracts
up for renewal,so I'm getting a 7210 - the 6510 will hopefully continue
to give sterling service from the dark recesses of my girfriend handbag!

When you consider that this phone is pretty much an 8310 underneath,
I can't imagine why anyone would want to buy the hugely inferior 8310
over this marvellous piece of technology. Compared to its sister-phone,
the 6510 has more functions, a better display, better build-quality,
and a nicer design. Seeing as this was released to cater for the business
market while the 8310 was aimed at morons in the street, it's no suprise
the features are better and a damn-sight more classy. I've never had
the slightest problem with mine, whereas my girlfriend's 8310 is forever
falling apart and locking up. The only disadvantage that the 6510 has
is that as it was designed for the business user there are more functional
features that the 8310 but not as many 'fun' ones. For instance: screensavers,
ringtone composers, better games, and more options for customisation
would have been nice. Also, compare the amount of different fascias
that are available for the 8310 and 6510. Lots and hardly any. All in
all, the 6510 is a fantastic phone that was definitely the best of the
pre-colour, pre-polyphonic generation. Seeing as it's pretty much being
given away nowardays, if you're on a budget and want an amazing phone
then get on eBay and net one for practically nothing.

I love the 6510! I've had this phone pre-integrated camera days and
I still havent seen any other phone (from Nokia or another manufacturer)
that is a worthy replacemenet for this one. Sure, no colour screen,
but as a light phone with a huge amount of practical, useable features,
you can't go past this phone. I use the calendar all the time to remind
me to do things, schedule appointments, keep track of birthdays. I get
to keep all the important SMS's messages as it can store 150, and the
stopwatch function is great for those with an active lifestyle. PC Suite
works great with this for phone for backing up your info. Even though
the 6100 is lighter than this phone, it isn't smaller. This and the
8310 are still the lightest phones in nokia's range. And as the 6100
has the superior software and ease of use, it gets my 5/5 rating. Colour
camera phones are really a novelty at this stage, and their large size,
weight, poor image quality and short battery life all make them unpractical
in the real world. I'll be keeping bmy 6510 for a long time until Nokia
invents a phone with at a better colour screen, better quality integrated
camera, lighter weight, and polyphonic ringtones which can be heard
when you are in a shopping centre or on the street! (nokia 7210 owners,

Having owned this phone for just over a year, I feel in a good position
to comment on it. First of all, I must say that phone's are not my life
and therefore gadgets such as a thermometer, tone composer, heat seaking
missiles etc don't really interest me. However, moving from not owning
a mobile phone to this one was a very easy transition. Nokia have a
good reputation for easy-to-use phones and this one certainly does not
dissapoint. Within days I could use it like a pro. All features are
clearly accessible and very easy to use. The phone has a clear agenda,
allowing very quick access to the features you'll use most (in my case
text messaging and telephone calling). WAP over GPRS is excellent, if
only to check how Swindon town are getting on while you're away at university!
The phone does, however, have a major software flaw (at least with my
version), in as much that every once in a while when browsing WAP or
sending a text message it just restarts itself. Aparantly this can be
'cured' through updating the software on the phone. Not something I'm
too keen on. If you're like me and want to get a fairly 'cool' phone
(so people don't laugh) but aren't interested in gimmicks, this is a
great phone. It's very small, lightweight and has an amazing battery
life. You can store well over a hundred text messages (although your
inbox slows down like mad when it's getting full) and I'm yet to see
a contact list limit (my phone book has well over 200 people in it now
and it's around 45% full). Be warned thoguh, the phone doesn't like
taking a bit of a battering. It has seen better days, having been dropped,
kicked, thrown and generally mistreated over the past year. It still
works, but the (changable) covers are certainly scratched to pieces.
A well reccomended phone that has seen through a good year of university
for me. Well reccomended, although if small and cool is your criteria,
upgrade to a Nokia 6100. I just did, although it hasn't arrived yet,
so I cannot comment on it.

many times i thought i'd lost it at the bottom of my bag! Not so great

from the super 8210 the 6510 has even bettered that model. I have used
other Nokia over the years, (2110i/8110i, etc with brief encounters
with Motorola & Ericsson) and this continues the usual foolproof Nokia
menu system in being so easy to use. Call quality and reception is good,
hanging on to calls in difficult areas such as heavily mechanised factory
