In a nutshell: The Nokia 6280 is a 3G slide phone.

Best buy: Nokia 6280 from Amazon Marketplace UK (£289.50)

It's a nice looking phone, about the same size as the Samsung D600, but with a squarer shape. One of the key benefits of a slide-up design is that it enables a large screen to be placed within a compact phone design, and for once Nokia have supplied a screen that doesn't disappoint. The display is a high quality 262k colour screen with a very high resolution of 320 x 240 pixels - as good as anything on the market today. It is prone to collect dust however. There are two cameras on the phone: an excellent 2 megapixel camera on the rear side of the phone for taking still images, and a front-mounted VGA camera for video calling. These are both excellent cameras.

Music is catered for with a music player for MP3 tracks and Visual Radio. Sound output is in stereo, and a stereo headset is supplied. The phone comes with 74 Mbytes of built-in memory plus an expandable memory card - ideal for storing music and video. The 6280 also has an interesting and novel feature - video ringtones!

Connectivity is fully supported, with Bluetooth, USB 2.0 and infra-red, as well as super-fast internet access via EDGE or 3G, supporting download speeds of up to 384 kbps, and upload speeds of 128 kbps. Battery life is very good for a 3G phone.

The Nokia 6280 is potentially one of the best 3G phones currently available. However, it is very unreliable and there have been a variety of faults reported - from memory card faults, to shutting down and even total failure. It's a shame, but we really can't recommend the 6280. Now replaced by the Nokia 6288.

Nokia 6280 features include:

  • 3G functionality (including video calling)
  • 2 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom and integrated flash
  • VGA camera for video calling
  • Display: Active Matrix, 262,144-colours, 320 x 240 pixels
  • Music player with stereo output (stereo headset supplied)
  • Visual Radio
  • Video ringtones
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, Instant Messaging, email (SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4)
  • Java games
  • XHTML web browser
  • Memory: 74 Mbytes plus miniSD card
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB 2.0, Infra-red
  • WAP, GPRS Class 10, EDGE (up to 236.8 kbps) & 3G (up to 384 kbps download)
  • Triband + 3G
  • Size: 100 x 46 x 21 mm
  • Weight: 115g
  • Talktime: up to 3 hours (3G) or 4 hours (2G)
  • Battery standby: up to 250 hours (2G or 3G)

I have just ordered a second hand nokia 6280 and the I have to say it is the best phone you can get. There is a little hack that you can do to the battery that'll make it last longer, you leave it on for 12 hours or more even if it says full charge, because then all the chemicals in side get fully charged! All the features are great including the video calling, I am on GIFFGAFF and there video calling is rediculasly cheep. I recommend this phone to anyone who wants a small little phone that does its job!

But mine does not have up to 7mb of inbuilt memory(although it uses memory card),but i still love my machine.

A short coming i have experienced with this device though is that the screen had stoped lighting up & the covers break easily but, Should ther be an upgrade with Wireless Access Network LAN/ GPS 7 Megapixel camera Music Tracker ID & a 3,5mm headset jack perhaps also dual (sim) network. Id be sure to get one.

Memory card is fine, no problem there and to be honest I would recommend it. I can't fault it all. I have had this phone for about a year now, and overall, I absolutely hate it! First of all, the internal memory is not very much. I download themes, etc. but I cannot apply them as they consist of 'too much memory'; ergo, my phone cannot look pretty, and stick to the boring Nokia theme. =( Furthermore, the style of the phone is U-G-L-Y! It comes in its black original casing - the size of a brick and very horrid indeed. It looks very old, and not something that I like to carry around. Due to this, I changed the casing to pink and I have another red fascia too. You can get these off eBay if the sight of the horrendous phone really agitates you. After this, the phone just keeps on crashing. I try to open up my memory card, but I just cannot! The phone just freezes, and I have to remove the battery and put it back in again, then start up the phone if I want to get it up and running again. It is not as though my mem. card/internal mem. is too full - there is enough space, hence, why the delinquent crashing? In addition to this, the calender/organiser is of no use. I need to store my important events onto my phone and there are a lot of them too. The calender just feels as though it is hidden away; hidden away into the menus and the submenus. I do not like this, as such basic operations and functions should be easily accessed - especially for a mainstream company like Nokia. Moreover, the phone always asks me for a 'security code'. The correct code is entered - and I am certain, but the stupidity of the phone suggests that it is incorrect. At times, when I seitch on the phone, it asks me this, and because it denies it, I cannot get into the phone! I have to keep restarting it, until eventually it allows me to access the phone without any hassle. Similarly, it also sometimes fails to recognise the sim, and therefore, more hassle! There are some unknown files (e.g. file name 'FOUND.000') that just do not delete. I connect it up to the computer, but when I do, it just comes back and does not delete! This is VERY annoying, as files as such are taking all my precious mem. card space. I do not know where these come from - I do not download anything online and whatnot - and yet, these THINGS are wrecking my phone and this is not what I want. Stupid phone! The camera sucks, and there is no option stating where you can change to use the front camera or the back camera. 2 megapixel, but not very good quality. Also, when you zoom in, it dramatically reduces picture size, and this also happens when pictures are (slightly) editted. On the contrary, it is a good phone for texting and calling. It is very robust and very strong; therefore, 2 stars. If it was not for this, I would not go as far as 1 star! I advise you not to buy this phone if you do not want to waste valuable time and valuable money! =) Hope this helps

I've not had any problems with this phone, apart from it sometimes turning itself off (usually during a text). It's pretty sturdy, I've dropped it so many times and it's still ok. The mobile internet is really good. The only thing I didn't really like was the size. It feels rather chunky compared to what I've had in the past. Not a bad wee phone.

I have had this phone for a year & it is the best phone i have ever had. Admittedy, there are a couple of minor problems, but they are nothing comapred to the annoying things my other phones have done in the past! the minor problems are that it will sometimes crash (where the screen will suddenly go white) & then come back on, and also the wall peper I put on suddenly disappears for no apparent reason. To me, theses things are unimportant compared to other problems with other phones. When reading mobile phone reviews I am always surprised at the number of people who insult other reviewers and call them things like retards, as it is very telling about that person (namely that they are so unhappy & insecure that trying to put other people down is the only way they can feel better about being them). Everybody knows this, but they still do it! It seems it may ironically be pot calling the kettle black.

Nice looking phone, got this on an 18-month contract. Bit of a plasticky feel, due to changeable covers, and dust easily gathered under the screen. Battery life is OK, though not excellent. 2MP camera is great outdoors, but grainy inside, not very good even with flash. Music player sounds great with the supplied headset, although I do not like the pop-port connection; I'm not a heavy user of the headset, but even so the connection became temperamental, it would partially detach itself from the phone so the music only played in one ear. My main complaint with this phone is that it was returned to Vodafone 4 times with the same fault, before they finally managed to fix it; it would occasionally decide restart itself. It did this once when I had to make an emergency call in an area with low signal, as I had to call my breakdown company; cut off just as they were taking my details. Happened more often when playing music, and I knew someone else who had the same phone, same problem. Too clever for its own good? Despite the problems, I liked this phone, but there are more solid, reliable phones out there; got a 6300 now which is excellent. The 6280 has plenty of customisation options, makes it good to use, and is as user-friendly as pretty much any Nokia.

well, it has an exelent camera, but pretty average with everything else. To be honest, If you are just buying it for the camera than i would say for you to keep your old phone and buy a digital camera. Besides, the camera is only 2 megapixel so you wouldn't be able to make a very large print. The video quality isn't all that good, nor is the sound. I would look past this one....

I run a business that uses two 6280's. I'm fed up of them not working properly for all the reasons stated in the text here. Most frustrating is when it shuts off and doesn't even tell you it's done it! I will be switching to another make at the next available opportunity.

For the first few days you will think you have got the best phone ever. I had the double bad luck of getting a '3' contract also. The phone randomly crashes, i can't count how many times it has dropped calls, won't dial or have my mates leaving me voice mails when it's switched on because they can't get through. On MANY occasions it will turn off and not turn back on for ages, oh yeah and it fell apart after 6 months also. On the flip The Camera is great for photos, videos and music and with a 2GB card you can use it for all of this and not worry about space or getting media to and from your PC. But the fact is it should be able to use it as a phone in the first instance!

hi ive had the 6280 for a while and i hate it, it has a very low battery life and i find the slide stiff and the buttons are too small but doable. but it has a lovely camera and takes clear pictures and videos. The nokia 6280 is a handy phone but has a few miner problems with that small piece of technology.

This phone can be very good and quick at times, but for example when i get more than 800 txt messages in my inbox it slows right down to a stop. I think that the fact you cant install software like TOMTOM is a bit on the rubbish side also. I know its only java enabled instead of a symbian OS, i think this was a bad move on Nokias part. Symbian rules an java does balso but not as an OS
