Nokia 6270 review

 Review: February 2006

Last updated March 2007

Rating: 2 stars

In a nutshell: The Nokia 6270 is a 2G version of the Nokia 6280, although curiously it's larger and heavier than its 3G sister!

Best buy: Nokia 6270 - 2 Mega Pixel C ... from Amazon (£190)

Review

It's a stylish slide-up phone with a polished aluminium finish and looks like it's intended to go head-to-head with Samsung's D600 slide phone.

It has a 2 megapixel camera, with a 5x digital zoom and an integrated flash. Despite being a 2 megapixel camera, pictures are not very clear however, especially when lighting conditions are not optimum. The video camera is QCIF format (144 x 176 pixels) which is a quarter of the resolution of the Samsung D600, and this shows. The screen is of very high quality, being an active matrix display with 262k colours and very high resolution (320 x 240 pixels). It matches the display on the D600. The menus are similar to previous Series 40 Nokia phones, but with the addition of Active Standby, which enables you to access its main functions very easily. The user interface makes good use of the large screen.

Moving on to audio functions, the 6270 has a media player that supports MP3, AAC and MPEG4 formats with stereo output. Output is via stereo speakers or the built-in stereo speakers with simulated 3D sound. There is also an FM radio with Visual Radio functionality. This lets you find out what song is playing, and information about the artist. The phone also supports voice commands, MP3 ringtones, Push to Talk, and has a voice recorder.

The built-in memory of the device is relatively small at 9 Mbytes, but a 128 Mbyte memory card is supplied, and this can be expanded further. The 6270 supports full wireless Bluetooth connectivity, as well as USB and infra-red. Although there is no 3G compatibility, fast data downloads are possible using EDGE (up to 236.8 kbps). The 6270 has email with support for attachments.

The Nokia 6270 is an impressive device on paper, with its size and weight being the only real drawbacks. However, like its 3G cousin the 6280, the 6270 comes with a range of problems. Apart from the camera and video being of poor quality, problems include poor battery life (many users reporting that they have to charge the phone each day), a badly constructed slide mechanism (Nokia have a lot to learn from Samsung when it comes to slide phones) and problems with the phone freezing or restarting itself. We are sad to day that the phone has not lived up to expectations and we cannot recommend it.

I bought a 6270 six years ago and got some problems with the flex print that links the slide to the body, replaced twice... Anyway, I am used to its functionalities and its great sound and don't see any reasons to change. Except that it can't be repaired anymore and shows signs of a forthcoming flex failure again... I like it and rate it five stars, but rate nokia's aftersale policy with a big zero!

After 5 years of owning this phone, it is on the verge of dying. The top buttons are starting to go and the screen has issues when locking and unlocking (but what can you expect). Not sure why everyone complains about the battery life as my phone lasts 2-3 days without charging. Make sure that you have a battery from Nokia with the little verification sticker. I bought a second battery which was not from nokia and it died after one day. The mp3 player is nice. Downside I found was that the headphones were designed specifically for the phone. After a year or so of having it, the wire wore out and I only got sound out of one ear bud. The loudspeaker is very good. Main reason for buying this phone was for functionality. It has quad band, infered and blue tooth. In comparison to the phones today I'm sure this is outdated. It is now big and bulky, but for it's time was a great phone for all you got.

Had this phone for about two years and had NO problems with it whatsoever,it does everything it was advertised to do and has never gone wrong (touch wood)I've used sms, mms, the camera and even used it to connect my laptop to the net on many many occasions,I've had it full of music, pictures and I've even dropped it out of a window! If I have to criticise then it is that when I travel abroad i have to reset the factory settings every time I put different sim cards in, not too much to ask though.

Its a cool phone. I had been using it roughly for one year and the only problem is the slide is a little loose but its strong enough. The picture quality is very good compared to other phones with a 2 mega pixel camera but truthfully the video quality is too bad. The sound is very loud but without bass and its stereo quality is so good. But its heavy and bulky which is good for big guys like me. I just like the phone.

This mobile is very bad. Sorry for my English - i will try to describe everything about it. I had 2 Nokia 6270. I did a lot of test on them and they had the same problems. The problems are: 1. Nokia 6270 software v3.66 - after 1 month it started to loose network. One month in nokia service center and it is ok. After 1 month - the same problem 2. I decided to update with software 3.81. I know very well what does it means to update and i did the process perfectly clear. The result was - my mobile died. I call nokia center for support and they answered me that i made wrong update. OK. I was so angry and i bought another one(brand new) Nokia 6270. 3. It was OK 2 months. After 2 months the same problem. I was in Italy in roaming and i lost coverage. After that i mooved to Greece(with a ship cruise and again i had not network) 4. I left the phone as it was(i took out the battery before) and after 5 days i realised that it is OK. I was very happy with the result(but no more than 3 days)After 3 days the same problem. I again started to update the software. This time it was OK. Sucesfully updated with v3.81 5. 7 Days later - i realised that the player for the music played very low, but i had no problem with the network, until i tried to call from the ship(where i am working) to my girlfriend. Suddenly the mobile stopped amd it was forever(because it was in my hands only few seconds - after that "mobile over board" 6. Several days later i realized that this telephone is out of producing. Nokia stop this f...in buls.it. 7. One advice - I love Nokia from so many years. They showed me before that they are number one. With this mobile i was really dissapointed. 8. DO NOT BUY THIS MOBILE!!! Thank You Nokia for this unbelievable telephone P.S. Send this message to everybody who wants to buy this!!!

battery standby: upto 200 hrs? they must be kidding. it is about 20 hrs. and the software for this real sucks. especially if u update it. 'updating' means just updating in software. and for nokia, it means downloading the entire software. does it stop there? does it work? no. it gives some error message? and u try to install the olde version, and nokia say no way, u have a later version of the pc suite. i would have been in a mess, if windows didn't have a "launch system restore" (from old date). nokia 6270 has several complex features, but these affaects some very simple features available in earlier models. it takes many keystrokes to do simple features. nokia 6270 is a waste of money.

It is seriously a pain in my neck...within 6 months of gettin it, it stopped detecting any networks. took it to the care centre which eventually replaced me set but not before a month long wait. and now yet another problem has developed. The display gets all weird and starts showing black lines at times. The care guy says its normal wear and tear, likely to happen in any slide phone and that the connectivity strip needs to be reaplaced. though the sound is good, it looks stylish and stuff, but seriously not worth the trouble!

Today I decided that my next phone won't be a Nokia again even though I really loved my 6270 I bought in April 2006. Despite the fact that sometimes when I flipped the phone open to call somebody the sound of the speaker became strangely echoing. Despite two dead pixels that appeared in December. Despite some funky charging problems (sim card not registered). Yesterday after charging a strange black cluster of black pixels appeared on my screen. Switching the phone off and back on I saw that they were ideed dead pixels. My Mum bought a Samsung slider phone the month I bought mine. Her camera is better and she has never had problems with her phone.

The main feature which attracts me the most is the POP-port feature, So there is no need to install drivers to Access the Memory-card, So It can be used as a PEN drive as Well. But I hate it Because The operating system, it works on is SYMBIAN S-40, which is really very stupid, which has many draw backs. One of the biggest one is that you can only use JAVA softwares, and those are rarely available these days...

I find it irritating that I cann;t dip in and out of writing a text message as I can on other Nokia phones, the message is saved to drafts each time... On the plus side, the volume is excellent and being a little hard of hearing, this is very important to me. short version: avoid this phone!!! long version: Though packed with features and pretty good bargain for the price, it fails to impress me. I have owned this phone for past 9 months and already undergone two major repairs. ( on/off button replacement and slide circuitry replacement ). For those who rely on their phones as much as I do, this is a bad choice. The camera takes a long time to take pictures and quality is so-so. Have seen many better 2 MP cameras. On the plus side, music playback is excellent and built in 512 MB mini SD card is great feature. But still, buy it only if you are looking for a secondary phone or some annoyed user ( like me ) is willing to sell it off for dirt cheap.

I would say that better phones are available in the market which will give you better value for money. Good thing is that Nokia 6270 has good resolution, has excellent stereo sound speakers . The worst part is that it is a series 40 phone. It does not support .sis files. Its charger has relatively smaller charging pin than other nokia charger which makes them unusable. It claims that it supports mpeg-4 clips but there is always a mismatch of voice and actions when u watch the (converted)clips. Also converted .3gp clips are horrible. You cannot install smart movie player which prevents you from watching good quality video clips as in other other lower end phones. While sliding the phone sometimes screen gets blurred or appear distorted. Video quality is not good and is in .3gp format only and not mpeg-4 as in N series phones. Again i have heard that these phones are not available in market these days Till now (from Last six months) I had worst experience with this phone. I had once repaired the handset then got it replaced for its poor audio quality. It took two and half months for replacement. Now again within few days the mobile is sometimes showing blurred images while sliding. The sound quality while using earphones is not as good as my previous 6270 phone.

I don't know how can replacing just a charger took 40 days! Now I can receives and makes call. Memory card is not working but I have given up long ago. No point going to service centre again to wait for hours just to deposit the phone. This phone has really erode my confidence in Nokia as a brand. Nokia should take responsibility and replace with atleast lower end model like what sony has done for its battery.

I thought the Nokia 6270 was class and comfort combined...a real stealer...but i guess the company stole from me....7 of my friends and i had bought this phone and almost all of us are facing huge issues. Moreover, every one of us have been to the service center at least once. The phone has some multiple issues. a) Though it is a power packed phone, launching two or more application causes the phone to hang, b) the sliding function in due time becomes redundant as because then the screen hangs when u slide the phone to make a call. c) the handset suddenly fails to read the SIM. d) the power button becomes redundant..as in the phone refuses to shut down by power button and when u take the battery out to reboot....u have to literally get into combat mode to start it again from the power button. I had all these multiple problems and the handset has been with the Nokia people for 3 out of the past 7 months that i have bought the phone. The Nokia Care people are hardly facilitiating, imagine that i have been almost rebuked by their representative saying that it was my fault that I bought a sliding handset. I have been so frustated with the company as i sometimes think about the huge difference in quality of service in India and europe where the company is based out of. I am sure they are taking the indian consumer on a ride and a visit to the third party customer service office will open ur eyes. I went to one of the primary service center in Mumbai, at phoneix mills, i reached there around 11:30 and my number THEN was 550 , imagine how many ppl come there for giving their handset on repair. To verify i wanted to check how many have come to take the phone and VOILA!!!! the same is the story on that front....so i beleive it is an everyday affair. While dealing with the company, they offered me a repalcement ..but of the same model. The various options that i have offered to them and which they have refused are as under. a) Give me a lower range model. -- They refused saying it has to match the MRP. b) I told them to guide me to a dealer with whom i can excahnge the model and pay the difference. They refused again. c) I asked them wether it would be sealed new handset. They refused saying that they will just give me a handset over the counter and nothing else. When i asked them to mail this offer they have sent me a mail but withut referring to the same. d) In the end I asked them to refund me the current MRP (as we all know, the handset prices fall) they refuse that too saying that it is against the comapny policy. Now, i am stuck with the phone and my friends and me are seriously contemplating suing them, if there are more such people who want to join please let me know. By the way frustated with Rs. 15000 ($350) bucks of mine down the drain...i switched on to LG temporarily...

Re: Nokia 6270. Looks alone do not make the phone worth having. I am very disappointed with it, and have finally decided after a decade of Nokia mobile phones that the brand is no longer good enough, and seems more interested in clocking up unnecessary accessory sales instead of valuing customer fidelity. Over a period of eight months the 6270 was generally good with intermittent bouts of auto-deleting of contact names and details. Then, the on/off button malfunctioned and the phone was impossible to switch on! After a 10 day repair period I collected the phone on the Saturday only to have it malfunction again the following Wednesday, but this time it was thought to be the charger. A new charger will work for two to three days before the message "not charging" is displayed once again. Nokia made a big mistake replacing their standard charger socket - among others - and I will not be replacing my two Nokia phones with Nokias... Ten years of fidelity gone in the space of a few days. Enough nonsense, there are many other brands to choose from now, but it is a shame!

First time I ever saw this phone was in cell phone shop I did like the way it look, slide and the 2Mpixel camera that the phone has. First few days I did like it after one week of using it the power ON and Off stop working, I thought the phone has one year warranty from Nokia and that is what the guy in the shop told me I did contact Nokia and what they told me is this: NokiaUSA does NOT carry this phone it's overseas phone from different country and we can take it you will need to send it back where you bought it from originally, I went back to the store and the manager offer me to fix it and I had no other choice soo he took it and it took more than two weeks to get it back it was working fine , Three days later start missing up again when I slide the phone the screen show up side down I took it back there fixed it again and this time it took over one month got it start using it same thing over and over took it back to the store and the manager decide to give me a new one in the box I did open the box got the phone out change the SIM card try to power up the phone did not work the phone had the same problem too lol advise, in case that you still want to buy this phone Nokia 6270 make sure that the seller offer some kind of warranty do not depend in Nokia that would not help.

Nice screen and good sound but basically a waste of money. Often restarts itself, freezes when reading memory card, and restarts when replying to messages! Sliding mechanism is badly constructed and the case dents easily. Had it 11 months and am very disappointed. Spend your money on something else.

this is most probably the worst phone i have had. it is huge, nothing dainty about it. the camara is awful, often blurs and doesn't show up well on the screen. the MP3 player is ok but nothing special. after having the phone for a month it kept freezing and cutting out. it would just stop working completly even if i was not doing anything with it which meant i recieved texts 3 days late because it kept turning itself off. all in all not worth even looking at.

I bought this phone almost 8 months ago! At first I thought this phone was fantastic but I was very wrong, within 3 weeks the bugs were here. A phone of really poor quality ear pieces falling off, screen freezing, switching off in mid convesation, not to mention the high pitched buzzing it made at random times. I ended up being very disappointed by this model. I was told by the manufacturers that I would not be able swap models till the 4th time of the phone being faulty. I did not get a swap until November which is a joke!! I would tell anyone to steer clear of this phone as I'm sure they will just be let down by the standards Nokia have set with their previous phones.

9 Points on what makes a Nokia 6270 owner: 1) Battery runs out pretty quickly! You got to charge your phone everyday. This is very irritating (i mean it!). 2) Had a problem with the phone restarting whenever i was listening to mp3's from the memory card. That problem, fortunately, has disappeared on its own. 3) 2 Mega Pixels Camera? Oh Yeah! The picture quality of the camera is not that good. It keeps giving me blurred pictures even in good lighting. 4) The phone looks attractive overall and has a smooth finish. But, it is a bulky phone. 5) Screen quality is pretty good. (But good heavens where can i find good games for a series 40 phone??? I tried searching the whole of the internet and no luck. All i get is 2D games that suck dead bunnies!) 6) The sliding keypad, due to its size, makes typing easy. (I given to servicing because the sliding, which is effected on display wires disconnected) 7) Bluetooth connectivity is pretty good, transfers files faster. USB is good too. Haven't tried infrared yet. (PC suite does have its own glitches though). 8) I love the sound quality. (This, as far as my needs go, is the only plus point in this mobile!) 9) It is on 1 bar most of the time and gets even worse when i am roaming.

This phone is a joke. It's a slider but it's as big as 3250 and not small like D600. At least 3250 is a smartphone and has a rotating keypad. They should also have been able to put a better slide mechanism for this size but it's very bad and poorly built. Camera is also rubbish and it is very heavy. I am glad i sold mine to get the 3250.

I've had this phone about 5months now, I do sort of like it, find it easy to navigate and do think that it has a good camera on it, it does 'crash' on me. Sometimes when calling out on it it will make me sound like a robot and friends of mine who have it have reported the same problem you have to hang up and call again. Funny at 1st, now it's irritating. The battery life is shocking, keep your phone charger to hand, the low battery sneaks up on you when you least expect it. It has all the features that attract me to a nokia but it just doesn't cut the mustard. I think Nokia have attempted to do too much with this plastic phone.

Overall the phone is value for money & that is what we shall lokk at.

Dislikes: 1) Though it is 2 MP camera ,photo quality is not upto the mark 2) It is series 40 ( I would like to ask nokia why they made it series 40?) so even though downloads are available on the net , the qualty of download may make you unhappy ( becoz series 40 is java based)

No crashes, but you can only use 488mb of the 2G available. It lets me put 125 mp3s and no more on it.... I got more than that on my 512 mb card.
