Nokia 6270 Review

Phone rating:

Review: February 2006. Updated March 2007.

The Nokia 6270 is a 2G version of the Nokia 6280, although curiously it's larger and heavier than its 3G sister! It's a stylish slide-up phone with a polished aluminium finish and looks like it's intended to go head-to-head with Samsung's D600 slide phone.

It has a 2 megapixel camera, with a 5x digital zoom and an integrated flash. Despite being a 2 megapixel camera, pictures are not very clear however, especially when lighting conditions are not optimum. The video camera is QCIF format (144 x 176 pixels) which is a quarter of the resolution of the Samsung D600, and this shows. The screen is of very high quality, being an active matrix display with 262k colours and very high resolution (320 x 240 pixels). It matches the display on the D600. The menus are similar to previous Series 40 Nokia phones, but with the addition of Active Standby, which enables you to access its main functions very easily. The user interface makes good use of the large screen.

Moving on to audio functions, the 6270 has a media player that supports MP3, AAC and MPEG4 formats with stereo output. Output is via stereo speakers or the built-in stereo speakers with simulated 3D sound. There is also an FM radio with Visual Radio functionality. This lets you find out what song is playing, and information about the artist. The phone also supports voice commands, MP3 ringtones, Push to Talk, and has a voice recorder.

The built-in memory of the device is relatively small at 9 Mbytes, but a 128 Mbyte memory card is supplied, and this can be expanded further. The 6270 supports full wireless Bluetooth connectivity, as well as USB and infra-red. Although there is no 3G compatibility, fast data downloads are possible using EDGE (up to 236.8 kbps). The 6270 has email with support for attachments.

The Nokia 6270 is an impressive device on paper, with its size and weight being the only real drawbacks. However, like its 3G cousin the 6280, the 6270 comes with a range of problems. Apart from the camera and video being of poor quality, problems include poor battery life (many users reporting that they have to charge the phone each day), a badly constructed slide mechanism (Nokia have a lot to learn from Samsung when it comes to slide phones) and problems with the phone freezing or restarting itself. We are sad to day that the phone has not lived up to expectations and we cannot recommend it.

Features of the Nokia 6270 include:

  • 2 megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom and integrated flash
  • Video camera
  • Display: Active Matrix, 262,144-colours, 320 x 240 pixels
  • Music player (MP3/AAC/MPEG4 formats)
  • Handsfree stereo speakers with 3D sound
  • FM stereo radio (Visual Radio)
  • 24-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
  • Voice commands
  • Voice recorder
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, Instant Messaging, email (SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4)
  • Push to talk key
  • Java games (3D Snake included)
  • XHTML web browser
  • Caller ID with picture
  • Memory: 9 Mbytes plus 128 Mbyte miniSD card
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 1.2, USB 2.0, Infra-red
  • WAP, GPRS Class 10, EDGE (up to 236.8 kbps)
  • Quadband
  • Size: 104 x 50 x 23 mm
  • Weight: 125g
  • Talktime: 3-5 hours
  • Battery standby: up to 200 hours

I bought a 6270 six years ago and got some problems with the flex print that links the slide to the body, replaced twice... Anyway, I am used to its functionalities and its great sound and don't see any reasons to change. Except that it can't be repaired anymore and shows signs of a forthcoming flex failure again... I like it and rate it five stars, but rate nokia's aftersale policy with a big zero!

I have had this phone for the past year.... the battery HAS to be charged every day, I also find the camera is worse than useless if the light is not bright enough....flash is insufficient. the slide has always been a little loose and wobbly and this was the 3RD phone I had, I rejected the first two phones because of this problem...... I find it irritating that I cann;t dip in and out of writing a text message as I can on other Nokia phones, the message is saved to drafts each time... On the plus side, the volume is excellent and being a little hard of hearing, this is very important to me. The memory is not very big, I usually have around 15 photos on the phone and I find it hard to download music as I get the message there is insufficient space. I am in the process of changing this phone and deserting Nokia after NINE years and going with Sony Ericsson

I also agree with Sadanand , same thing is happening with me, after 2-3 month my cell was giving error and i was not able to select the operator, i went to one of the gallery he said this is part of wear and tear and so no replacement(even though my cell i am using in best possible way to avoid even a scratch on display) i said ok, give me the estimates, they said it will cosy around 1200 Rs, i went to other nokia dealer they said 500 bucks , then i went to a dealer in suburb he said he can do it in 250 rs, i get it done. Cell worked fine for 3 month, then start giving problem my screen was opening as we start computer in safe mode, they said again it seems u r cell is fallen but as per my knoweldge there presumption is -ve, i was in urgency so i said go ahead they said it will be around 950 since strap is to be changed i said ok , then after 3 days when i went to pick it up they said cannot be done some problem ,i will have to get software reinstalled, i said take back up of messages and addresses and then reload once formatted, they said they dont provide this service. I was left with option other than losing my contacts, they formatted it, now naviagation is working fine i am confused what is the problem "software " or "Strap" and they have charged me 950 +250 respectively, But Still i cannot use my cell cannot select network,it is almost 5 days now struglling to get this rectified, can some one help me what to do.

short version: avoid this phone!!! long version: Though packed with features and pretty good bargain for the price, it fails to impress me. I have owned this phone for past 9 months and already undergone two major repairs. ( on/off button replacement and slide circuitry replacement ). For those who rely on their phones as much as I do, this is a bad choice. The camera takes a long time to take pictures and quality is so-so. Have seen many better 2 MP cameras. On the plus side, music playback is excellent and built in 512 MB mini SD card is great feature. But still, buy it only if you are looking for a secondary phone or some annoyed user ( like me ) is willing to sell it off for dirt cheap.

Hmmmm....some people must be very unlucky or just like complaining !! Now into my 11th month of owning this underrated gem and have yet to experience a single problem with it. Slide is excellent. Phone has been heavily used in the 11 months and it slides as if it were stil day one. Screen is superb. Sound quality everything you need from a phone. You want pinnacle of sound go buy an i-Pod !! Have not found the camera pictures to be even remotely bad. My partner has an N73 and my pictures are certainly comparable to hers. As for Battery Life. Yes it's not great but charging every couple of days is hardly a hardship is it !?!?!? I will probably move on when my contract is up to (if they hurry up and release it ) the N76. However, I will still be hanging onto this excellent 'little' phone at the same time. Now stop moaning !!

To say that this phone is a flop, is to say the least. I bought the phone and only after 2months, the network signal dissappears,it took me close to 3months to fix this problem, and unknown to me, the network problem was never really fixed as it started to fluctuate after 2 weeks. The display keypad was the next and it simply won't respond.I was still trying to resolve this problem when the call speakers froze on me except i select the speaker option during a call. That's not all, the display also finally blacked out. What kind of phone is this?.I'm sure People with good comments about this phone have not used it for at least 3months. Nokia should be responsible for their products and i believe we all deserve compensation.I'll probably press charges because i bought the phone for a fortune.( nokia 6270 does not deserve any star)

I would say that better phones are available in the market which will give you better value for money. Good thing is that Nokia 6270 has good resolution, has excellent stereo sound speakers . The worst part is that it is a series 40 phone. It does not support .sis files. Its charger has relatively smaller charging pin than other nokia charger which makes them unusable. It claims that it supports mpeg-4 clips but there is always a mismatch of voice and actions when u watch the (converted)clips. Also converted .3gp clips are horrible. You cannot install smart movie player which prevents you from watching good quality video clips as in other other lower end phones. While sliding the phone sometimes screen gets blurred or appear distorted. Video quality is not good and is in .3gp format only and not mpeg-4 as in N series phones. Again i have heard that these phones are not available in market these days Till now (from Last six months) I had worst experience with this phone. I had once repaired the handset then got it replaced for its poor audio quality. It took two and half months for replacement. Now again within few days the mobile is sometimes showing blurred images while sliding. The sound quality while using earphones is not as good as my previous 6270 phone.

Its a real nightmare to have Nokia 6270. Within a month of purchase I had a problem in display. Sometimes it was showing upside down, sometimes split windows and most of the times a blank screen. I had to get it repaired which took me one and half months time. After 3 months there was problem in Charger, whose replacement took another 40 days. I don't know how can replacing just a charger took 40 days! Now I can receives and makes call. Memory card is not working but I have given up long ago. No point going to service centre again to wait for hours just to deposit the phone. This phone has really erode my confidence in Nokia as a brand. Nokia should take responsibility and replace with atleast lower end model like what sony has done for its battery.

I thought the Nokia 6270 was class and comfort combined...a real stealer...but i guess the company stole from me....7 of my friends and i had bought this phone and almost all of us are facing huge issues. Moreover, every one of us have been to the service center at least once. The phone has some multiple issues. a) Though it is a power packed phone, launching two or more application causes the phone to hang, b) the sliding function in due time becomes redundant as because then the screen hangs when u slide the phone to make a call. c) the handset suddenly fails to read the SIM. d) the power button becomes redundant..as in the phone refuses to shut down by power button and when u take the battery out to reboot....u have to literally get into combat mode to start it again from the power button. I had all these multiple problems and the handset has been with the Nokia people for 3 out of the past 7 months that i have bought the phone. The Nokia Care people are hardly facilitiating, imagine that i have been almost rebuked by their representative saying that it was my fault that I bought a sliding handset. I have been so frustated with the company as i sometimes think about the huge difference in quality of service in India and europe where the company is based out of. I am sure they are taking the indian consumer on a ride and a visit to the third party customer service office will open ur eyes. I went to one of the primary service center in Mumbai, at phoneix mills, i reached there around 11:30 and my number THEN was 550 , imagine how many ppl come there for giving their handset on repair. To verify i wanted to check how many have come to take the phone and VOILA!!!! the same is the story on that front....so i beleive it is an everyday affair. While dealing with the company, they offered me a repalcement ..but of the same model. The various options that i have offered to them and which they have refused are as under. a) Give me a lower range model. -- They refused saying it has to match the MRP. b) I told them to guide me to a dealer with whom i can excahnge the model and pay the difference. They refused again. c) I asked them wether it would be sealed new handset. They refused saying that they will just give me a handset over the counter and nothing else. When i asked them to mail this offer they have sent me a mail but withut referring to the same. d) In the end I asked them to refund me the current MRP (as we all know, the handset prices fall) they refuse that too saying that it is against the comapny policy. Now, i am stuck with the phone and my friends and me are seriously contemplating suing them, if there are more such people who want to join please let me know. By the way frustated with Rs. 15000 ($350) bucks of mine down the drain...i switched on to LG temporarily...

Re: Nokia 6270. Looks alone do not make the phone worth having. I am very disappointed with it, and have finally decided after a decade of Nokia mobile phones that the brand is no longer good enough, and seems more interested in clocking up unnecessary accessory sales instead of valuing customer fidelity. Over a period of eight months the 6270 was generally good with intermittent bouts of auto-deleting of contact names and details. Then, the on/off button malfunctioned and the phone was impossible to switch on! After a 10 day repair period I collected the phone on the Saturday only to have it malfunction again the following Wednesday, but this time it was thought to be the charger. A new charger will work for two to three days before the message "not charging" is displayed once again. Nokia made a big mistake replacing their standard charger socket - among others - and I will not be replacing my two Nokia phones with Nokias... Ten years of fidelity gone in the space of a few days. Enough nonsense, there are many other brands to choose from now, but it is a shame!

First few days I did like it after one week of using it the power ON and Off stop working, I thought the phone has one year warranty from Nokia and that is what the guy in the shop told me I did contact Nokia and what they told me is this: NokiaUSA does NOT carry this phone it's overseas phone from different country and we can take it you will need to send it back where you bought it from originally, I went back to the store and the manager offer me to fix it and I had no other choice soo he took it and it took more than two weeks to get it back it was working fine , Three days later start missing up again when I slide the phone the screen show up side down I took it back there fixed it again and this time it took over one month got it start using it same thing over and over took it back to the store and the manager decide to give me a new one in the box I did open the box got the phone out change the SIM card try to power up the phone did not work the phone had the same problem too lol advise, in case that you still want to buy this phone Nokia 6270 make sure that the seller offer some kind of warranty do not depend in Nokia that would not help.

I ended up being very disappointed by this model. I was told by the manufacturers that I would not be able swap models till the 4th time of the phone being faulty. 9 Points on what makes a Nokia 6270 owner: 1) Battery runs out pretty quickly! You got to charge your phone everyday. This is very irritating (i mean it!). 2) Had a problem with the phone restarting whenever i was listening to mp3's from the memory card. That problem, fortunately, has disappeared on its own. 3) 2 Mega Pixels Camera? Oh Yeah! The picture quality of the camera is not that good. It keeps giving me blurred pictures even in good lighting. 4) The phone looks attractive overall and has a smooth finish. But, it is a bulky phone. 5) Screen quality is pretty good. (But good heavens where can i find good games for a series 40 phone??? I tried searching the whole of the internet and no luck. All i get is 2D games that suck dead bunnies!) 6) The sliding keypad, due to its size, makes typing easy. (I given to servicing because the sliding, which is effected on display wires disconnected) 7) Bluetooth connectivity is pretty good, transfers files faster. USB is good too. Haven't tried infrared yet. (PC suite does have its own glitches though). 8) I love the sound quality. (This, as far as my needs go, is the only plus point in this mobile!) 9) It is on 1 bar most of the time and gets even worse when i am roaming.

I had been using Nokia phones for last 4 years.I know the reliability of Nokai Phones and thats why i opted for the same company ,when i thought of new one.N6270 is really a good performer in this group.Sliding facility and large screen are most attractive feattures of this mobile phone. And its aesthetics add value to it.Inspite of having price at higher end ,I feel very much comfortable with it.MP3 player and extendable memory are another plus points. The back drops are,it cannot be covered for protection from moisture and rain,as it is very common in this contry.and also the dealer warned that,if the screen got damaged,it will be very costly for me.Mobile games avilable for this series is very rare.I hav not met any other problem in last 2 months. So I rate it as excellent. basheer K.A,basheka@gmail.com

10 Points on what makes a Nokia 6270 owner: 1) The worst drawback this phone can have is that it is series 40! It means applications and games come really scarce for this baby. Why would nokia make such a choice is anyones guess (backward a$$ idiots!!!). 2) Battery runs out pretty quickly! You got to charge your phone everyday. This is very irritating (i mean it!). 3) 2 Mega Pixels Camera? Oh Yeah! The picture quality of the camera is not that good. It keeps giving me blurred pictures even in good lighting. 4) Had a problem with the phone restarting whenever i was listening to mp3's from the memory card. That problem, fortunately, has disappeared on its own. 5) Screen quality is pretty good. (But good heavens where can i find good games for a series 40 phone??? I tried searching the whole of the internet and no luck. All i get is 2D games that suck dead bunnies!) 6) The phone looks attractive overall and has a smooth finish. But, it is a bulky phone. 7) Bluetooth connectivity is pretty good, transfers files faster than on my old ngage QD. USB is good too. Haven't tried infrared yet. (PC suite does have its own glitches though). 8) The sliding keypad, due to its size, makes typing easy. 9) I love the sound quality. (This, as far as my needs go, is the only plus point in this mobile!) 10) Is a bit costly for all it does. Make a better choice, stay away from this phone please.

This is the best phone I have ever had. This is something coming from me as I buy a new one every few months as I get bored easily or the phone does not do what I really want. This has 2 mega pixel camera that takes fantastic photographs - which I use alot! Ask my kids. lol. It takes a memory card, so if you are like me and love your music, put the top notch memory card in and you can put loads and loads of music on. But on previous phones just having a memory card slot has not been enough as the sound is not what I would of liked it to be. This phone has stero widening and in my opinion is certainly the best phone in giving you a unbeleivable sound. Yes, the phone is big, but it surface is so smooth and comfortable, thats what you notice more than the size. Also when on a call you can always have on hands free where the quality again is brilliant. Really clear. My patner also recently was looking around for a mobile phone and we happened to be in a shop and I actually held a 6280 - all I can say is, I was shocked and so thankful I had bought the 6270 instead. It was like holding a toy phone - very light and plastic. It was horrible to hold after being used to metalic / heavier feel of the 6270. But that is my personal opinion. All I can say is this mobile phone fanatic has finally found her mobile phone. :-)

A good phone let down mainly by the poor construction. Compared to my old D500 the slide mechanism on this phone is really terrible. It does not have a semi-auto mechanism and the two halves wobble both when the slide is closed and when it's up. The screen of course is fantastic and the menu is also very good once you get used to it. The camera is one of the other things which prevent this phone from being what it should be. On maximum resolution, photos looks worse than most 1.3mp cameras. Only when resized to smaller resolution they look like you'd want to share it with your friends. Good phone but disappointing performance.

It seems that if you ask the phone to do anything less simple than send a text etc it cant cope, not even with sending an mms. The lastest freeze was when I tried to play one of the games and it just locked up making a screaming noise until I took the battery out. If somone had put a new car this bad on the market they would end up like Rover in no time. What is wrong with Nokia dont they care that they are marketing goods that basically should not have got past the research dept or is it that they are so big and making so much money that they really dont care about joe public buying the their phones and think if its new and in fashion they will buy it anyway. This is my first Nokia since a 3330 and have had Samsung's up till now but I thought I would give them a try, what a mistake. I will be taking this phone back and going back to Samsung at least they test their products before selling them. WORST PHONE I HAVE EVER HAD, NEVER AGAIN.

Mixed result with the camera, can take first class pics in good bright light but low light and flash are predictably hopeless. Nokia obviously rushed to get this on the market to compete with the D600 and obviously failed miserably. If u want a great multimedia phone this big than get the W900 which has better features otherwise the D600 is smaller, better constructed and does everything better.

Okay the size is not that small and it is a bit heavy, BUT the quality and features are Awesome. Expandable memory card w/ hot swap, and MP3s you can set as ringtones, stereo speakers, and make your own ringtones from mp3s,wav files, aac files or mxmf files. This phone rocks! I curently have over 105 ful mp3s on my phone and still have nearly half my 512mb mini card memory left to use. The ringtones are crisp and loud enough to be heard over the noise of a busy pub, good strong vibration for silent calls as well as ring/vibrate at the same time feature unlike some Motorolas. No dropped calls no poor signals, quad band reception gets signal nearly anywhere. Data cable to transfer data with ease as well as good enough photo qualty. 'It's a phone people not an expensive camera' get over it! Even in bright sunlight you can see your screen without shading it with a hand from sunlight. Mp3s can be listened to with or without the headset, radio has to have headset in order to operate but loudspeaker can be enabled after it is attatched. The only issues with this phone would be ringtones could be a bit louder, and regular charge adapter not the mini plug, and slightly smaller would have been nice, but hey you can't have it all everytime. I too have always been a Nokia girl and received my phone as an upgrade after waiting weeks for O2 to get it. I'd previously tried the Samsung D600, but being a Nokia girl, I was finding it difficult to get used to the small things that were different. (Like the space button for texting being in a different place etc. Not a major thing - I know, but when you text a lot and use predictive text, I found it hard to get used to and kept pressing the wrong buttons!) Anyway......I research all of the new phones for weeks before my upgrade date and know pretty much all there is to know about them before I choose. I was going to go for the 6280 as my partner has 3G and we could try the video calling. However, after reading the reviews on here, I decided that as a phone, the 6270 sounded better and more reliable. My last handset was the 7610 and it crashed so many times, losing data and not sending texts - then sending the same text 8 times - that I was trying to avoid the possibility of the same problems. So......I've had the 6270 for a week now to give it a fair chance. At first I was very impressed by the quality of the screen and the slide mechanism is quite smooth too. The phone has 3D speakers and the sound that they give off is phenomenal! Overall it looks very nice and it is very easy to use. The keypad is large which is excellent. (I don't have large fingers but feel that the keypad on the N70 is ridiculously small and that was partly why I didn't get that phone). There are some great features on the phone, however, I'm not overly impressed with the camera. It's supposed to be 2 megapixel but I think that the quality of the pics on my 7610 is better and that's only 1 megapixel. (Just my opinion). We have a proper digital camera for pics and only use the phones for odd snaps so it's not that much of an issue. The most important thing for me is that I can easily phone and text. Don't know if it's a handset problem but the signal strength has not been that great while I'm talking. (1 bar - 2 at the most and never had this problem with the 7610).I've also been cut off midway through a conversation a few times. Texting isn't hard but isn't as easy as I expected it to be. If like me you send a lot of texts to a loved one with a kiss at the end, you probably won't for much longer! Usually when using predictive text, you press the one button and the x comes up automatically. On this handset however, if you press a key once, all you get is an asterix. It only starts to spell the word when you've pressed the second key. I know it's a minor thing, but it's something I use a lot. All in all, it's a great phone with a huge clear screen and some excellent features. However, there a few things that I don't like, the main one being it's size. You can't tell from the picture, but it is actually huge. (In length and width). It's also very heavy and being a girl I'm finding it far too big to just slip into my bag. Therefore after much deliberation, I have finally decided that it has to go! I'd definitely say that it's more of a man's phone :( Think I might have to wait now for the new clamshell Nokia's that are due out in the next couple of months. Either that or accept that Nokia maybe aren't as good as I thought they were and just get used to another brand!

The buttons are clear, well spaced and easy to press (very handy when you send approx 600 texts a month). In addition the menu system is brilliant. The phone allows you to personalise the order of the icons so everything is exactly where you want it. The phone also has a superb 'Active Standby' feature which again gives personalisation options so you can have all the menus you want easily to hand. I have no complaints about the camera and having used everything from the original 7650 to the N90 I can say it will be fine for all you buddy David Bailey's out there. It also has a proper flash which is an excellent bonus. If you are looking for a new phone but don't want to move onto the Symbian-based phones then this is for you.
