Nokia 6101 review

 Review: July 2005

In a nutshell: The Nokia 6101 is a compact camera phone with a clamshell design.

By Nokia's standards, it's very small, but it's still heavy compared with similar clamshells from Samsung. Still, Nokia are definitely making progress in the physical design of their clamshell phones, and this is a very attractive phone. There are dual colour displays and the keypad is thoughtfully laid out, with a 5-way navigation key and a dedicated camera button. However the build quality is rather poor and the phone feels cheap and scratches very easily.

The camera is a standard VGA resolution, with the ability to take self-portraits using the external display as a viewfinder. This is not a great feature as the external display is so small - a rotating camera would have been a better solution. The camera has a night mode, but no flash. The camera also functions as a video recorder using the 3GP format. Video quality is quite poor. Nokia have partnered with Kodak to let you upload your photos to the Kodak website and have them printed and sent to your address. This is a service that you have to pay for, of course.

There is also a voice recorder, and the phone has an FM stereo radio. This works only when the supplied headset is plugged in, as the headset wire is used as the FM aerial. MP3 tracks can be used as ringtones, although there is no capability for listening to MP3's otherwise.

The memory is only 4.4 Mbytes which doesn't let you store many photos or ringtones.

Overall the 6101 is a reasonable mid-range camera phone. Although it's quite expensive for what you get, it can just about hold its own with the current range of mid-priced clamshells from Motorola and Samsung, and is probably Nokia's most successful implementation of a flip-phone yet. Before buying, just bear in mind that for the same kind of money you could get a clamshell phone from Motorola or Samsung with much better features.

Nokia 6101 features include:

  • Integrated VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with self-portrait capability
  • Video recorder with sound
  • Internal display: 128 x 160 pixels (1.8 inches), 65,536 colours

  • WAP, GPRS class 10, HSCSD, EDGE, class 6: download speed up to 177.6 kbps, uplink speed up to 118.4 kbps
  • Memory: 4.4 Mbytes
  • Connectivity: USB, infra-red
  • Triband
  • Vibration alert
  • Size: 85 x 45 x 24 mm
  • Weight: 97g

If I had known that it was not possible to use a USB to put my photos onto my computer from the Nokia 6101, I would never have bought it. I have photos of my father on it, he has since passed away. This for me is one of only 3 flaws in this model but this is a huge flaw. Not being to listen my own choice of music and poor radio receptionare the others. I would be very grateful if Nokia came up with a solution to this unobtainable precious pictures problem, meanwhile I would suggest that anyone else who has the same problem should try taken a photo of there photos on the Nokia 6101 with another phone that does allow transferance to your computer.

The 6101 has a good design (save the antennae) and it's keyboard is very comfortable. But you get tired of flipping the huge thing after a while and just looking at it. I've had this phone for about a year and the topside seems rather fragile. But for me, the looks bring the phone down. The clamshell thing just doesn't get me. The thing's way too thick (for a clamshell) and rather expesnsive too. I'm hoping to get a slide 6500 to replace this one. Average.

I got this phone for Christmas back in 2005. I was generally (at the time) impressed with it's camera functions and other features, but as time has progressed, I have considered getting a new phone this is because of... Slow Menu Navigation, Lack of Features (Bluetooth etc.), Mediocre camera quality, small memory and dodgy build quality. If you give it a good squeeze, you can hear the plastic creak. :( It's gotten quite scratched and chipped as I've dropped it, I can't get the back cover off, and the volume key's packed in. Also, it's a bulky fella as well, being a flip phone. Other than that, it's been good to me. Keys are nicely sized, the screen is alright, and it makes calls sound fine. (if they are a little quiet sometimes.)

i have had this phone for a long long time now (2 years) but don't think thats because i like it. I just didn;t want to fork out for a new phone and couldn't be bothered with the hassle anyway. I got this phone for christmas and hated it within months. It scratches unbelievably easily, has very annoyin text tones, has virtually no memory, is soooo chunky, i keep accidently going onto the internet thing or whatever it is, and the PTT is also annoying. Not only that ive also had problem with charging. I admit it has lasted (barely - it now keeps saying there no sim and rejecting the sim and saying its restricted. Also the screen is coming loose and the black plastic coating on the front stsrted PEELING OFF after just a couple of months!!!! not a good look!!! To be honest i thought it would last at least 1 n 1/2 years without breaking but hey) It is reasonably easy to use though so I would recommend this phone to anyone that wants an easy to use phone for simple textin g and calling and you are extremely careful with your phone but if you, like most people, want a phone to do even slightly more avoid this at all costs! its annoying, chunky, embarrassing and the covering becomes extremely unsightly after a very short amount of time

Well I like Nokia phones and my old one was the best I every had I even droped it over 41 feet while working on a roof top and it didn't hurt it also droped it in a gal of paint and I just washed it off in the sink and took it apart and let it dry, This new phone is ok but don't drop it because it may not work after you do, also I can't hear the other person I'm talking to at first I thought my hearing was going bad but that is not the case because I have listened in other phones and I have no problem hearing the other person. I have had this phone over one year now but I can't change it because it is a company phone but if it was me I wouldn't buy one myself, we have 7 of these phones in the company and they are all the same very poor and also after a year of working the fliptop will break and if you answer the phone make sure you hold onto the top filp so it won't close on you if you happen to move it from your ear for any reason or it will hang your call up, thi s is disapointing to me but I guess it's better then no phone at all. I would have put no stars but it won't let me do this so one star it will be, and who ever likes this phone now give it some time and you will see it is very poor in time, Sorry to put it this way because I do like Nokia phones but this one is really poor ( 6101 )

Great mobile for simple use. Tough and it's basic features make it built to a price, however, the memory is too small for having a camera and mp3 ringtones. If you are looking for a descent basic mobile phone, get one of these. If you are a mobile addict that needs a mobile with more features than your computer, then buy another phone. Now if you care about the quality of the things you do, buy a normal camera, an iPod and an xbox, and leave the phone to do the simple communication job. If you like features a lot and can't live without it, get the iPhone or buy an enourmous, heavy nokia with microwave and washing machine for no more than 1 thousand dollars. Remember, it is a phone.

All those here rubbishing this phone are morons. It has a very good feature set for the price, although they could have left some of them out, owing to the tiny memory and lack of card slot. If they had only put SD card, it would be so much better. Having said that, and having used the camera a bit, they may as well have left that off as well. One of the many reasons I threw away the SE T610 was that the camera pictures were a joke. Sadly, this one isn't much better. Lack of Bluetooth might be fatal for some, but it does have IR which saved the day for me. I can use my Acer Pocket PC to copy stuff back and forth. The FM radio is a nice touch, but you have to have the headset with you or it won't work. At least it actually came with headset, not like the Siemens POS I had. Best for me is that I can use whatever pictures and audio files I like for wallpaper, ringtone, etc. SE would only accept a few formats, none of which suited me. So, provided it stands up to normal daily use, I see no reason to ever regret buying this one. This is my first Nokia phone, so I was somewhat apprehensive, but it looks like it'll be ok. 90% of the complaints you see here are rubbish.

I love this phone! Had it for over a year (originally bought the silver and black) but I liked it so much that I went out and bought myself another one exactly the same, but in pink instead!!! Common people, everyone seems to be complaining that its an awful phone due to the lack of internal memory and picture/video capability, but I'm a student (heavy user) and if I can say one thing: I have never had any problems taking happy snaps of me and my mates and then transfering them onto PC to make room for more pics on the phone. Not to mention when your a heavy user like me, being constantly on the phone to mates and relatives, this phone is really great because it can handle heavy usage. (I have dropped it 500 times/got it wet/cracked the screen, etc... and it still keeps going!!) The phone is small and lightweight and the clam makes it feel invisible in your pocket! The two colour displays are a godsend because you can attach pictures to names so its sort of a visual caller ID which is really cool, and the keypad is large and simple, so sending hundreds of texts a week is no problem for me!!! Now that its available in pink, girls you know what to do!!!!!

Still only holds about 4 pictures max. Why make a phone with camera/video facility if you cant use it. Rubbish. Cant wait for my new Samsung to get here. Well done Nokia!

I'v had this phone for a while now. When i bought it i felt it was very good but wen i took a thew photos i could'nt store much more stuff on it. Now all i have is about 3 photos no videos and it says i'v got bout 5kb left. I realy don't recomend this phone for people who want a phone to take pictures and have fun on it, its more of a buisness phone.

my dad and my best friend has this phone and they have sooo much fun having time with it. maybe it's not as good as the new Nokia L'amour 7370 but it's simple. the color is sharp and i like the shape. i like the mini display. i like the games already built in. only ONE problem. i am not sure if this is just becuase my bff's fault but she said her SIM card got rejected. but it did not cause too much trouble. great

ive had this phone for about a week. this is a ok phone but consider this...SMALL MEMORY! im a teen so i take pics a lot and use all the features on the phone. i took about 35 photos and 1 video (video quality sucks) and the memory was FULL!! yeah it sucked. but i really liked the design and it has an ok camera. it is good for texting and has a great speaker phone and clear qualitly when talkin. everythin else is preety much avarage. but beware of small memory. i would consider another phone if ur a teen, but if u use a phone just for talkin and nothing else this is the phone for the job., after a week of use im returning this phone and getting a samsung E635...i hope its good!!

This phone is not so bad. I don't like the antena, but what can I do? Nokia is my favorite, and that was the main reason for buying this phone.

Good price. good features. decent camera. decent screen. but the menu navigation is SOOOOOO FREAKING SLOOOOOOOOWW. after i press the button it takes almost a full second before the menu screen loads and it is this slow with most of its menu functions. needless to say that my hands move way to fast for this phones menu to be able to keep up :(

had this phone for over 3 months and im really disappointed with it - always had nokia's and when i saw they were bringing out a clam phone i was really exited! I had read other reviews about the lack of memory but had assumed that i wouldnt need that much so i got it anyway - but after downloading one ringtone 19kb, three pictures, one game, 19% of the available contact list and thats it - im left with a full memory! i cant take any more pictures or download anything - i called the nokia helpline and explained my problem and i was told that it 'sounded about right' why have a camera/video recorder if i can only store three pictures! so im stuck with it until im allowed an upgrade in 9months 1 week and 2days!

Frankly speaking, this phone isn't really target for younger generations. I bought this phone as a present for my mom at age about 70, and she is very happy about it because: 1. It is easy to use. 2. The ringtone is loud enough. 3. Display text is large enough; she doesn't need to wear her eye-glasses to view them. We already knew that it only supports little non-expandable memory, no bluetooth, but still, with such built in media player this design is kind of stupid. We are not complaining... but isn't the whole issue stupid? Just imagine if Nokia can take off the media player function, perhaps the price of the phone can be lowered a bit. Besides, it is SO HARD to connect this phone via USB cable - blame me for getting so used to bluetooth :>. I end up transferring all the ringtones and wallpapers to 6101 through another mobile phone's infrared port. It is not possible to synchronize contacts this way, but this is not an issue for my mom.. she doesn't use the phone to store her contacts anyway. Afterall, if you simply use it as a "phone" - not listening to MP3, okay with low quality camera and display resolution, and not going to transfer a lot of stuff (ringtones/themes) to the phones, it is still okay to buy it. But with such limited features, this phone is obviously over-priced!

I'v had this phone for about 6 months now, and I'm quite atisfied. I don't really use the video function, due to the poor quality, but the pictures come out quite fine. I'm one of those people who don't need the latest ringtone or game or whatever, so the memory is good too. I have about 12 pictures on it. The sound is good too, I manage to wake up in the morning:) The only thing is that the vibration function is a bit unstable. It sometimes continues vibrating after I answer it! But it looks really elegant (I have the black and silver one) despite the antenna, and I also love the keyboard. Completely standard and easy to use, with nice, big keys. Good when you're contemplating the need for new glasses :p

Why are some people complaining about no bluetooth and a small memory on this phone. Surely you knew this when you bought it,. so dont complain. Would be like buying a car with a small engine and complaining about a lack of power. It's a decent phone that does exactly what it says on the box !!

Nice little phone. Yes, the menu is the 'same old Nokia' menu, but as with all Nokia's - a) it's simple and functional and b) it doesn't crash. If you want a good basic clamshell phone without the problems associated with other brands - then go for it. Yes, the keyboard does feel a little cheap (the navigation keys in particular) but then - a Nokia, at this price - what do you expect? I also acknowledge the memory is limited, but then if you're not downloading ring-tones and videos - does it matter? I bought this for my partner, she's 30 not 13 :)

Average phone. Naff looking with the body closed only reason i've kept this phone for so long (on contract had it 4 months) is coz its easy to text on. sometimes loading of messages and other stuff is really slow. Also i've noticed other people say it scratches easily. Mines seems to have been scratched while its been open on the paint. Also camera not the best. But worst thing i can complain about is she really c*ap memory! anytime i want something new, a pic or ringtone i have to delete something yet even tho i have deleted all the pre installed games!!! it still says i need more memory. I have deleted most of the pre installed ringtones as well, couldnt even hold the mp3 ringtone i downloaded and i only have 2 photos on it! pathetic memory. Also its been having hissy fits with a blank screen coming up on both internal and external screens so i took the battery and sim card out and it was ok for a while then started going off its head again whenever i opened the flip. Only reason i've given it 3 stars is coz its nokia plus its no a bad looking phone (apart from external antenna) and is easy to text on
