Nokia 6030 review

 Review: September 2005

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: The Nokia 6030 is a non-camera phone with a smart appearance but limited functionality for the price.

Compare prices | User reviews

On the positive side, this is a good-looking phone, with an appearance more like a top-end business phone. The keypad is well designed and functional, with a nice 4-way scroll key, and configurable right and left soft keys. The keypad does suffer a little from Nokia's habit of making keypads "cool", but it's perfectly functional. All of the basics are here, plus a couple of extras like the FM radio and integrated handsfree speaker. The display has 65k colours and is better than many of its competitors.

On the negative side, the 6030 seems to be rather pricey for what you get. For the same money you might have expected some decent connectivity (the 6030 has none - not even cable or infra-red), triband and even a camera. The 6030 has none of these features. It's not even that lightweight, considering that it has so little functionality. However, if you're a Nokia fan looking for a phone that costs less than £100 and doesn't have a camera, then this is as good a choice as any.

Nokia 6030 features include:

  • Display: 65,536 colours, 128 x 128 pixels
  • FM radio
  • Integrated handsfree speaker
  • Polyphonic ringtones
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS
  • Downloadable Java games
  • Speed dialing
  • Four-way scroll with select key
  • Configurable right and left soft keys
  • Xpress-on™ covers
  • XHTML browser
  • Phonebook (300 entries)
  • Vibration alert
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS class 6
  • Dual band
  • Size: 104 x 44 x 18 mm
  • Weight: 90g
  • Talktime: up to 3 hours
  • Battery standby: up to 300 hours

Basic phone, will only take an operamini 3.1, limited RAM. Used all the 2+MB of images space at one point with no slowdown in performance. Has had Gmail & even webcam apps on it. Had it to bits several times for cleaning. Paint wore off nav buttons as I keep claws for fingernails.. Own browser ok, google will format most sites well now too. Animations excellent, easy save menu. Learnt Russian basics on it from Wap sites..

I've had this phone for about 2 years now and it has been great. I have no problems with it but there are a few areas that do bother me from time to time. There is a one second lag when you press a button for anything to happen. But after a little while you get used to it. Basically, I just remember key pad patterns. Second, I have not found way to actually adjust the volume on the ear piece so when I'm talking near a busy street it sometimes is very hard to hear the other person. It took me about a month to figure out where the option was to turn on the speaker phone - it's only available when you are already on a call - but that's alright. Battery life is awesome! Very durable, I've dropped it several times and from pretty high up and still hanging in there good and strong.

I purchased this phone whilst I was in America on a temporary basis. I must say that although it was cheap, it was not, in this day and age, worth the $30 I paid. Slow, unresponsive, unintuitive and limited in functionality. I would only recommend this phone to someone who needed a disposable phone on a temporary basis. For example, a phone that one can take hiking so that it doesn't matter if it gets soaked. I am not sure whether it was the model, my particular handset, or the American T-Mobile network, but the audio quality was very poor. It seemed that the audio quality going out was fine -- my friend reported that I sounded perfectly clear. Below average.

I've had this phone for over two years and it hasn't failed me once. This is a very durable phone and definitely can take hits and blows. Mine has fallen out of my pocket at wild speeds and the only thing that happened was that the back lid came off and the battery came out but other than that, everything was fine. The keypad is easy to use, nothing complicated. It doesn't cost much but it certainly delivers your needs.
