Nokia 6030 Review

Phone rating:

Review: September 2005.

The Nokia 6030 is a non-camera phone with a smart appearance but limited functionality for the price.

On the positive side, this is a good-looking phone, with an appearance more like a top-end business phone. The keypad is well designed and functional, with a nice 4-way scroll key, and configurable right and left soft keys. The keypad does suffer a little from Nokia's habit of making keypads "cool", but it's perfectly functional. All of the basics are here, plus a couple of extras like the FM radio and integrated handsfree speaker. The display has 65k colours and is better than many of its competitors.

On the negative side, the 6030 seems to be rather pricey for what you get. For the same money you might have expected some decent connectivity (the 6030 has none - not even cable or infra-red), triband and even a camera. The 6030 has none of these features. It's not even that lightweight, considering that it has so little functionality. However, if you're a Nokia fan looking for a phone that costs less than £100 and doesn't have a camera, then this is as good a choice as any.

Features of the Nokia 6030 include:

  • Display: 65,536 colours, 128 x 128 pixels
  • FM radio
  • Integrated handsfree speaker
  • Polyphonic ringtones
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS
  • Downloadable Java games
  • Speed dialing
  • Four-way scroll with select key
  • Configurable right and left soft keys
  • Xpress-on™ covers
  • XHTML browser
  • Phonebook (300 entries)
  • Vibration alert
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS class 6
  • Dual band
  • Size: 104 x 44 x 18 mm
  • Weight: 90g
  • Talktime: up to 3 hours
  • Battery standby: up to 300 hours

The Nokia 6030 is in essense a good phone. Feature count is good given it costs around £50.00 GBP. The radio is listenable (mono only)however the supplied headset sounds vague/distant in use. The use of a standard Nokia earpiece solves this. The speaker phone mode is effective if a little distorted. Ideal for inverting the phone in a shirt pocket (so mic is facing you) and talking handsfree. The calender works well with seemimgly infinate space for reminders (I haven't reached the limit anyway, and it's used a lot). The keys are worth a mention too, as they are very comfortable in use, soft yet positive. The main silver Navi button takes some getting use to, but works well enough. Battery life is well over a week on standby. Oddities include not being able to perform a group delete on text message delivery reports (you could on the now ancient but still good 3310 and 3210!)and the fact it seems to like collecting dust. Not good even if the covers are changable so you can get the dust out. Maybe someone will make a Dyson attachment. The biggest issue however is the screen. At night it's great, but in strong daylight its almost useless with visibility being very bad indeed. To sum up I still like it. It's nice to use and is comfortable. Ringtones sounds good enough and to be fair the screen works well most of the time (reasonable quality, it's just in sunlight forget it!) Would be a fair bargain if obtained secound hand for say £25 mark.

I think that this phone lacks in the area of features for a phone with that price. It should be priced basically in the same category as the Nokia 1600 which is a bit better than it in some ways save the FM radio for example. I really do enjoy the radio that was what misled me into buying that phone.

1. Good as a phone. 2. I like the battery charge holding time - 10 days at moderate use with DAILY (adjustable) ALARM Clock on!!! Very efficient and configurable feature - I love it!!! 3. Although there is a very annoying BUG - when you switch the radio ON and then disconnect the headphones the phone DOES NOT recognize it and when you receive a call or you call sbdy then you can't hear anything unless you turn on the speaker ("hands free") or connect the headphones back! For 2 DAYS I was looking for what the heck happened to my phone?!!Eventually I noticed the radio is still on although it CAN NOT work without the headset. I simply needed to switch it OFF manually. This really sucks - it is your fault, Nokia designers!!!. 4. To connect to computer you need either a special service cable to connect UNDER the battery (you can see there a few connector "spots") - extremely uncomfortable!!! - OR - suprisingly - buy an USB data cable (DKU-5)for this phone ;))) It costs 5 to 10 USD (on ebay) PLUS shipment. Produced in China ONLY - as far as I learned. The USB Cable comes with a driver/software on a CD. Finlly I managed to dowload a "Solytare" game (free!!!) and other stuff from Internet to my PC and to transfer it to my NOKIA - that's great!!!!;)) The only pitty is - whenever I look at my phone I wonder why is it not loaded with some more features (e.g. mp3 player, etc.)since it really looks like capable of much more...:))) After 8 months I realised I really need a bluetooth phone, so I need to change. But I really like this one, and I can't make this final decision. Not yet :)))

If you're a technology buff who has this phone, there are a lot of things you will not understand about the design of the phone itself. I had a very old inexpensive Nokia that was about 3 years old, and it had all the features the 6030 has, and then a few more. The 6030 does not let you customize ring tones for different people which I found to be rather odd. The navigation buttons are difficult to just press ONE button, instead of slipping and pressing other ones (especially the center black menu button). It is actually very common to try and press the menu button, and end up pressing FIVE other buttons. I would not reccommend this phone to any tech buff, I think it would be perfect for someone who does not use a phone for much other than dialing. Texting is a pain with this phone as well. You will see what I mean if you get the phone. No regrets in buying it, it's just very limited in features. Usually when you get a new phone, you get a few surprise features that you did not know about. Don't expect that with the 6030, in fact don't even assume it has some of the standard features your old phone had either.

Does (or rather did) everything I could have wanted from a no-camera 'phone. Until, about 3 weeks after I got it, the in-car (hands-free) connection failed. This is proper Nokia kit, compatible with this 'phone as well as my previous one (3510i). Nokia tried to blame the in-car kit, until I was able to prove (by connecting the 3510i to it) that it was the 6030 at fault, not the kit! Having got the 'phone from Vodafone in the first place, I tried to get a replacement from them, only there weren't any in the UK, and they couldn't explain why not. Two months on, and I'm still waiting for my call to tell me that they finally have one and can replace this one. However, I'm not holding my breath!! Good 'phone - just don't try to use it on a Nokia Hands-free kit!

there is no way i can retrieve files/data from another cellphone. and it just sucks badly. i wanted to have a very rare ringtone and i just couldn't get it after trying every available medium. the phone couldn't even download from a commercial ringtone site. my service provider has charged me with an amount that corresponded to the download cost, but the phone had just dysfunctional features that prevented me to download the tones that i requested. at first look the phone seems to be made of metal but after doing a thorough scrutiny, or after owning one, the metal-looking designs eventually reveals themselves to be just mere plastic. although the plastic succeeded in imitating the metal look, i can't think of other good reasons why nokia wanted to imitate metal but to actually make other people to believe that someone who owns a nokia 6030 is someone who owns an expensive phone. it's like, if "poor" people wanted to show off an expensive phone, they could always buy a nokia 6030 and let everyone know that they're owning an status quo phone. the only thing good in this phone is that it has a good battery life. compared to other phones, it is relatively heavy. the design of the battery cover is loose.

GPRS is fast in comparison to previous s40 entry level phones. 4. Keypad is the best among all other nokia phones. 5. Attractive appearence. 6. Radio Quality is great. 7. SIM holder is better than others in many Nokias. 8. The phone was dropped around 5 times since 21 August and it's still functioning as I just first bought it. 9. Ease of use and wide configuration of shortcuts. ------------------- -ve: ---- 1. Back cover falls easily. 2. Screen fades too much in the sun. 3. Lighting interval before the phone saves power is very short. 4. When some body calls u, the phone displays the name around 1 or 2 seconds earlier than the ringtone. 5. If u try to edit a 128*128 JPG image & save it, it saves automatically as 96*96 GIF image! (I believe this is a bug in all s40 phones) 6. Calendar has only month view. 7. No IR, BT or an official Data Cable. 8. No wallet, count down timer or a stop watch. 9. If u remove the battery then insert it, u have to set time & date from scratch. ------------

Wow man! for AU $129 you can buy an unlocked prepaid phone from Kmart and its worth it for the same price you could get a NOKIA 2600 or 3120 and they both don't have themes, radio of 16 chord poly plus 3MB memory. it is well worth the price and isn't a bad looker and very smal and light if you want a great phone for the price buy it if you are after IR, bluetooth exectra look elswhere, try 3200 for camra and IR, 3220 for VGA camera, 65k etc they are both cheap for their class and offer great funtionality but the 6030 has the same UI as the 3220 but lacks camera.

The phone does what it says on the tin, no camera, bluetooth etc. It is a lovely phone to hold and simple to operate. Buttons are easy to press and its quite lightweight. However there are two difficulties of which Nokia are aware but appear unwilling to address: 1) The saver feature (where the screen brightness dims after a short interval) is too short, if you've a long text you cannot read it in the available time. There is no way to adjust the time period. 2) The phone comes with 2 themes named Microdots and Flower. With both, when you write a text you get a white background, nice and easy to view. However on ALL the other screens these themes remain in the background and cannot be removed. This is very problematic when trying to read a text against one of these coloured backgrounds! Nokia's helpline solution was to download a 3rd party theme with a light coloured background. Hardly helpful Nokia!

If your after a simple non-camera phone this is well worth checking out. As a phone it performs well - battery life so far is very good and it looks rather smart. The FM radio is a nice bonus and offers good quality sound. (For those wanting a case, the krusell one is a very good fit and also looks the part if a bit pricey).

If like me your after a mobile that does what it needs to do and don't need all the flashy gimzo's, then you can't go far wrong with the Nokia 6030. The styling is excellent for the price, & looks alot more exspensive than it is. Receiving calls are good & clear, the color screen is ok and the FM radio is excellent, and comes in handy when your at work when you want to now the latest footy results. All in all this another good cheap mobile from Nokia it does what mobiles were designed to do in the first place with a bonus of a FM radio

This phone is not enough value for money.the only features worth mentioning are 1) the stereo headphones 2)the FM radio 3)the four way navigation key which can be customised. But the build quality is really poor and the phones squeaks right from the time you lay hands on it.And what is the use of 65 k color display if it doesnt have a camera? Arent you beter off buying a 2600 if you just want a basic phone?

Hi ppl. this phone is just nice, i like the messaging, its just wonderfully easy to use the predictive text. Its light very stylish and elegant. Tha FM is owesome and enough preset stations. The only thing i dont like about it just like all Nokia phones, is the losing of time and date when the battery is removed. Again the lower cover feels very loose, owing to the fact that I have only had the phone for two weeks. To solve this problems,i am thinking of SonyEricson K750i, Please would any one inform me if SonyEricson phones loose date and time on battery removal. bmsenya@yahoo.com Thanks.

I got this phone for a day as of this writing. I initially bought a Nokia 3120 but I was dissatisfied with it (poor response time, ghosting, poor screen, etc.) so I opted for a new budget phone. This review is somewhat like a comparison between the two. The Nokia 6030 is priced a little higher than the Nokia 3120. For external appearance, I give it a 4 rating: the black colored version looks cool, elegant and expensive (lol!). The plastic almost looks metallic. The keypad is evenly spaced between rows, the 4 way navigational keypad feels solid but the central button could have been made smaller because my thumb bumps into it when using the navigation pad. The screen is bright, and with more color capability than the N 3120, looks more pleasing to the eye. One problem is the plate at the back: it seems to have come loose and in another review site, the author says he had the same problem. Another is that there seems to be no way to connect to a PC! It has no bluetooth, and as of the moment, no data cable available. You have got to wonder what the little rectangular slot at the bottom is for, though. The manual doesn't state what it is for. The included software features are pretty standard. But you have to use GPRS to download/update applications and games and to install new tunes, themes and graphics. With this kind of hassle, I give it a functionality rating of 2 -- it could have been avoided if Nokia gave it Bluetooth or cable connectivity. Even other lower end models can at least use a data cable. Geez. Overall, a good looking phone, but don't expect too much on its software or connectivity features.

This phone is very nice and very affordable. Just bought it less than 8k here in manila. Menus are very intuitive but sometimes lag a bit. With FM radio. But no IR, bluetooth and camera(but I don't need a camera on a phone I do have my digi cam.) Screen is bright and you can adjust brightness. You can also modify the shortcuts to your liking. This phone is only dual band. Must buy another phone when going to US. Battery lasts 4 days(normal use plus FM radio 2 to 3 hrs a day) This phone looks like a SE phone. Overall this is a very excellent phone for simple people. Affordable and great value for money. =)
