Nokia 5310 Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: This is a good music phone from Nokia that can
rival Sony Ericsson's Walkman range. We love the ultraslim, lightweight
design, the practical keypad and the hot looks. The 5310 has a fully
loaded music player and FM radio, up to 4 Gbytes of memory for storing
songs, a 2 megapixel camera and Bluetooth connectivity. The battery
life is below average, but this phone is definitely worth a look, especially
the Comes With Music edition that gives you a whole year of unlimited
free music downloads. Outstanding value for money.
Review: October 2008. Last updated July 2009.
Oh yes! Nokia's XpressMusic range has moved up a gear and Sony Ericsson had
better watch out. The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is a classic-shape music phone
available in a choice of red or blue. It's an ultrathin phone, at just 9.9 mm,
and has a lovely practical design with a good sized conventional keypad and
a 5-way navigation key (Sony Ericsson take note!) There are three dedicated
music keys placed at the side of the screen and volume keys along the edge. The
bevelled edge makes it easy to hold in your palm, and the red or blue stripes
are funky but not over the top. We like the look, we like the feel. This is
definitely a phone that you can enjoy even when it's switched off, and it's
small and light enough to carry anywhere - jeans pocket, shirt pocket or handbag.
This is primarily a music phone, and it's equipped with a full function music
player and FM radio. The music player has support for playlists, album art and
an equaliser. You can listen to your music using the built-in loudspeaker, or
preferably using the stereo headset supplied or a Bluetooth
wireless headset (optional extra). The 5310 also includes a 3.5mm headphone
jack, so you can plug in any standard fit headphones - a definite bonus. The
5310 has a new upgraded audio chip, and the audio quality is impeccable. Really,
the music player is just as easy to use as one of Sony Ericsson's Walkman phones,
or even a dedicated MP3 player. We like the fact that there's a decent amount
of memory built in (30 Mbytes), but you'll definitely want to kit the phone
out with a memory card: the 5310 supports microSD cards up to 4 Gbytes, which
is enough for around 1,000 songs. MicroSD
cards are really cheap these days (around £25 for 4GB), so really
there's no reason not to go for the maximum size available. The Nokia 5310 COmes
WIth Music version has a 2 GB card supplied in the sales package.
From 16th October 2008, the 5310 is available with the ground-breaking Nokia
Comes With Music service. This service
is exclusive to the Carphone Warehouse.
We're not usually impressed with these kinds of add-on services, but this one
is actually quite incredible. When you buy a Nokia "Comes With Music"
phone, you get a whole year of free unlimited music downloads! Whatever you
download during the year you can keep forever. Now if you are just a modest
music buyer you can save quite a lot of money with this. If you're a heavy buyer,
or if you'd like to be a heavy but didn't think you could afford to, then this
is unbelievably good value! You can even transfer the music to a registered
PC as well as your phone. Initially this service will be available only on the
5310 XpressMusic and the N95 8GB Comes With Music Edition.
The Comes With Music edition phones are available in a choice of 7 different
colours that differentiate the phone from the normal 5310.
But the 5310 is not just a music phone. As well as making calls and playing
music, it will do everything that you'd expect from a mid-range non-3G phone.
The camera is a respectable 2 megabytes. It lacks a flash, which is a shame,
but in good light it'll take decent pics. The display is outstandingly good,
with a high-res screen that's as good as anything in this price range. Although
the phone isn't 3G, it supports fast downloads using EDGE and has the Opera
Mini Browser built-in, so you can still browse the web, and the screen is large
enough to make this feasible. The phone comes with 3 games, and you can download
Java games too. The UI is quite customisable, with animated screensavers, wallpapers
and downloadable themes.
If there's one thing wrong with the 5310 (and at Mobile Phones UK we love to
find things wrong!) it's the battery life. Nokia quote 300 hours standby - that's
12.5 days. Forget it! You'll probably get 1-2 days use from this phone, depending
on how much you use the features. Since it's a music phone, you'll probably
use it a lot and will need to charge it most days. Get over it - this is an
ultrathin phone with a large LCD screen and tons of features. This is what the
battery life is like in this kind of phone. If a longer battery life is essential
for you, then buy a different phone (not an ultraslim one - maybe the SE
W810i or SE W910i.) A number of users
are also reporting that their phone freezes or restarts. This is unacceptable,
and if this happens to you, return it to the shop or upgrade to the latest firmware,
which seems to be completely stable.
Features of the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic include:
- 2 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom
- Video camera
- Display: Active matrix LCD, 240 x 320 pixels, 16 million colours, 2 inches

hi. i bought my 5310 2 years or so ago, on a carphone warehouse deal
with free downloads, £82. i had no trouble with the phone, but the software
that came with it crashed more than once and took 5 minutes to open
on my computer. once i realised i could just sync straight to WMP it
was easy. The charger pin is way too thin, knew it would be, and i've
replaced the charger socket twice. now. I replaced it with a motorols
android phone, but that switches itself off and on and i've already
had to send it back once, so i may go back to my old 5310. calls texts
emails and music, and a snapshot camera. if nokia would just bring out
an ypgrade i'd go for it

I think the Nokia 5310 is a fantastic phone with an excellent music
player which supports several formats. But it has problems, like low
battery life and a low 2 megapixel camera which i did not except. Also
my major issue, the volume of the phone is soooo low that the competition
is a L7. Otherwise it is a great phone...i also hoped it would be 3G..But
ohh well

TO ENJOY HOLDING IT WHEREVER I GO..... THE FUNCTIONS ARE JUST UNIQUE.
THE STORAGE CAPACITY IS HUGE AND IT CONTAINS LOTS OF MESSAGES I WOULD
OTHERWISE HAVE LOST DUE TO LOW STORAGE CAPACITY ON OTHER PHONES. THE
CAMERA TOO IS VERY BRIGHT AND DOES JUSTICE TO YOU WHEN A SHOT IS TAKEN.
KEEP UP THE SMART JOB, NOKIA. MAKE EASY AND BETTER PHONES....I'LL RATE

1 not all phones restart, only some of them have the rebooting problem,
the warranty covers that. 2 same thing, not all phones have that problem,
you are then first one I've heard. 3 it's not the loudest but for such
a slim phone it's acceptable. 4 not everyone has your fat fingers, if
you know you had those why did you buy it in the first place? get an
Emporia.. 5 battery time is just as good as other phones, it lasts for
several days after normal usage(about 6 calls, 10 messages, some game
playing and camera usage and about 2 hours of music playing a day) and
takes 2-3 hours max to charge not half a day. 6 USB cable comes with
it, you don't have to buy anything, so what is the problem? 7 camera
is good enough for a slim music player phone, if you want to take superhigh
quality photos, buy a digital camera not a music phone. 8 do you realize
how stupid it is to complain about getting a free memory card?? seriously,
I'm not even going to comment on that, I mean you get a free one, FREE!!
who cares what you do with it, you can use it as a paperweight or as
a Frisbee, it's FREE!! people don't listen to people like this guy or
religion or whatever he is, he obviously just tries to find things to
complain about.. just one word: 3.5 mm !!! in you face SE and all other

After using this phone for over a month, I think I should put another
review: 1-yes, the phone restarts when music is on with headphones,
I think it also restarted while it was on standby at least one time.
2-it looses the contacts, meaning try to push "names" and you get a
message "contacts are not ready" if someone calls you at this time,
you get a number instead of his name, you need to restart the phoen
and wait. 3- ringing volume and speaker volume are low, hardly can hear
it. 4-too small for my fingers, my hands are size 8.5, I should've got
the 6300. 5- Battary runs away very fast, lets you down in the middle
of a busy day, while charging takes half a day.. 6- I still think they
should've made the USB phone port regular size. 7- Camera is absolutely
useless, they shouldn't have included one, but who dares to produce
a phone with no camera nowadays, ha? 8- What is the point in making
the phone ready for 4GB memory, and include only 2 GB with it??!! you
either throw this away (no one will trade it in) and buy a 4GB, or just
use it, and as if you never had this advantage of storing much music
on it. I guess looks aren't everything after all.

The phone is great. I have two questions: >>> How do you use frames
when using the camera? I tried in every way possible and I just cant
use them. There is an entire folder with frames but I can only use them
as normal pictures. >>> How do you add songs directly to the memory-card
through the PC Suite Music Manager? I noticed that converting .mp3 files
to .aac is recommended and I think it avoids the crash problems that
many people experience, and it can easily be done through the Music
Manager. However, when adding a song in the Music Manager it goes to
the phone memory and I can't change the settings to the memory-card.
Does anyone have another solution? Thanks for your help(thanks Ruby,
fortunately I found that setting myself, it was well hidden). The phone
is great, definitely worth the relatively low price and the slim size.

My orginal intention was to buy a SE W610 walkman phone, then I saw
the keypad and changed my mind as I text alot. I have had the Nokia
5310 for over a week and I love it. Downloading music from your computer
using the Nokia software was easy.I like the fact that you can use your
own headphones with the phone and it come with a 2GB microSD card at
carphonewarehouse. The phone auto-tunes in 20 radio stations, and it's
menu allow you to alternative between the Radio and Music Player, which
is good on commuter journeys. The Screen is excellent for downloading
picture messages and reading WAP pages. So far no problems making/receiving
calls. CONS; If you use the music player alot the battery will last
about 2 days, the SE menu systems is a lot easier to use and has a better
camera. I would definately recommend Buying A PROTECTIVE CRYSTAL CASE
under £1 via Amazon.co.uk to protect the screen and camera. RE: KEY
PAD TONES OFF:, the previous reviewer could not turn it when texting.
Go into MENU> SETTINGS> PROFILES> GENERAL> PERSONALISE, Use the NAVIGATION
key down the menu, until you get to KEYPAD TONES> press NAVIGATION key
to the LEFT>to delete the sounds, SCROLL down> & press SAVE>. Overall
I give this phone 4/5 for battery life, the menu system. N.B Make sure
that go into the SETTING MENU & MESSAGE SETTING MENU and configure you
settings to your network provider as this prevented me from intially
receving MMS and WAP. A good phone, light, lot of features and good
buy.

I just got mine yesterday and it's great, so far no crashes everything
is perfect. I will try to use a 8 GB memory with it and hope it works,
has anyone tried yet? Also, can someone tell me how to turn off the
sound the keys make when you press them? It's really annoying when you
are writing a message since the tone is slower than you typing and for
example when you press the 7 four times to get an S the tone sound only
plays 2 or 3 times if you do it fast (or just at a normal writing rate)
and you think you only pressed it three times when you actually pressed
it four times, so you press it again believing it's the fourth time
when it actually is the fifth. I think it's annoying and I suppose other
people have that problem. The question is how you turn the sound off.
It's usually easy to find in the settings, but on this one I can't find
it anywhere, and the book, the cd or the website don't help at all.
Please someone help me: >How do you turn the key-sound off? >Does a
8 GB memory work without any problems?

What a beautiful phone, lightweight, nice menus, easy to load music
(though a little frustrating if you are used to itunes as you cannot
easily track which albums you have loaded already). I had a Samsung
clamshell which I loved for being so light and simple, plus a nano.
This replaces them both nicely, with a 4gb card. Battery poor - I use
the radio or music on my commute to/from work, plus 2-3 phone calls
during the day. Battery lasts one day. Have had two suspected crashes
in first week, it might be voicemail related. If it crashes more, I'll
have to return it to the store sadly.

+ slim, fits in suit pocket without disrupting the cut of your suit.
+ Overall good package of features: music player, simple camera, 2GB
storage card included, slim & light. - poor pc software that frequently
crashes. Luckily you can use it as a USB drive and drag and drop but
this means you don't automatic syncing which is particularly useful
for things like radio podcasts. - poorly thought out controls, the headphone
interface has no music controls (volume, next track etc.) and none of
the currently available Nokia controllers are compatible which is pretty
stupid for a music oriented phone. - on-phone controls are average;
the special music control keys are poorly placed and I never use them
as it is much more comfortable to use the normal controls holding the
phone normally. Little annoyances like if you stop halfway through a
track it doesn't remember where (again particularly annoying for long
podcasts), no scroll wheel like an I Pod. It can replace having to carry
both an mp3 player and phone in an attractively small package, just
a pity they didn't really think through the details of the design and
software very well.

Oh my good god. I hate these things. Reason? I work for Carphone Warehouse
we've returned almost every single one of these that was ever sold.
We've had multiple batches and the phones all do the same thing. If
the user has locked their keypad when using the phone and receives a
message or a missed call and tries to retrieve it the phone will lock
up! There was a stage we had 5 in one day same problem! Avoid in my
opinion. I love Nokia's I was using the N95 and 8600 and they are superb,
but my god don't buy this 5310! You have been warned.

just got this to replace a Sony Ericsson V630. So far it makes the Sony
look like something out of the dark ages. My priority was a light small
phone. After looking at the current brick range (of which 99% of phones
seem to fall into this category) if wasn't left with much choice. Plumped
for this and so far not disappointed. And to those of you complaining
about a camera - ITS A TELEPHONE. Go by a Canon Ixus if you want superb
shots. Camera - Not the greatest but like I say if you want to take
award winning photos DONT USE A PHONE TO DO IT. THe picture quality
is good enough to send SMS or have snaps to email around of to take
snaps to set as wallpaper etc. Sound/MP3 - Sooooooo much better than
my Sony Ericsson. Much easier to use, a much better laid out menu system,
better sound quality, you can use your own headphones through the 3.5mm
jack so dont get stuck with the manufacturers std. and the speaker is
just as good if not better than on my SONY. Got two dedicated MP3 players
- Creative Zen and iAudio. I'd say the sound quality was nearly as good
as the Zen but not up to the iAudio standards. Battery life so far seems
great. 2 days of playing/setting up and its still on full bars. A big
plus is the software. I.e. you dont need it to transfer files and music
to the phone. Sony made me use their own software. It was attrocious
and made using the MP3 a chore - took 2 days to transfer one album.
ON this its just drag and drop. And if you do use the software to sync
with outlook its a doddle to use. Only complaint is that the bundled
software is not actually compatible with the phone!!! Had to download
the latest version to get my PC and phone connected but once sorted
its great. And unlike my Sony this phone actually comes with a Telephone
ring tone! Overall very impressed. Glad I didn't go for the W880i. Its
the little things like drag and drop via USB through to being able to
set the time delay on the auto key lock and showing some of todays calendar
on the standby screen that make this such a great phone to use.

I really love this phone, the design is awesome and the sound is rally
good. For being so slim, I think the camera is perfect, it's about half
as thick as the n95 or the k850. I have a question though: all the websites
say you can have a 4 GB memory to it, but there are microSD memories
with 6 and 8 GB. Has anyone tried to use them? Does it work?

outdoors, video quality is good. The battery life is normal...ppl may
find it below normal because of its extensive use for music listening.

Just ditched my Samsung U600 for this. What a difference, the Nokia
seems light years ahead. The screen, the feel, the sound quality, the
menu system, everything. Even the battery lasts twice as long. I would
recommend getting some sort of cover. It's so small and light, it could
easliy slip out of the hand or pocket and would smash into a million
pieces! At long last Nokia are starting to make class leading phones
