Nokia 5220 XpressMusic Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: An entry-level music phone that does the business
for well under £100. The 5220 has an excellent music player, a
stereo FM radio and a 2 megapixel camera. Connectivity is excellent,
with Bluetooth, USB and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Memory is limited,
at 30MB, but is expandable to 2GB with a microSD memory card.
Review: October 2008. Updated April 2009.
The 5220 is the entry-level phone in Nokia's XpressMusic range of music phones.
Nokia say that the 5220 has a stylishly asymmetrical design that's easy to hold.
We think it looks a bit funny, but it's no big deal.
The point is that it's a cheap phone that makes calls, sends texts, takes snapshots
with a basic camera, plays music and has an FM radio too. The music player is
excellent, with support for playlists and most popular digital music formats,
including MP3, MP4, AAC and WMA. The sound output from the speaker may be a
bit tinny, but the 5220 has a key advantage, which is that you can plug in any
standard headphones to its 3.5mm headphone jack, and then you'll get top audio
quality, courtesy of a dedicated audio chip. You can also use a wireless
Bluetooth headset if you prefer.
The 5220 doesn't have a lot of memory for storing music - just 30 Mbytes -
which is enough for around 8 songs. But you can add a microSD
memory card up to 2GB, which will give you enough storage for around 500
songs.
It's a very lightweight and superslim phone too, and we like it! Some users
are reporting problems with the phone though - recurring themes are speaker
and software problems - read the user reviews below for more information.
Features of the Nokia 5220 XpressMusic include:
- 2 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom
- Video camera
- Display: Active matrix LCD, 240 x 320 pixels, 256,000 colours, 2 inches
- Music player (MP3, MP4, AAC, eAAc+, and WMA music files / OMA DRM 2.0 and
Windows Media DRM)
- Stereo FM radio with Vidual Radio support
- Ringtones: Video ringtones, MP3 and MP4 tones, eAAC+ tones, AAC tones, WMA
tones, 64-voice polyphonic MIDI, message alert tones, and alarm clock tones
- Integrated handsfree speaker
- Voice commands
- Voice recorder
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, push email (SMTP, POP3 and IMAP 4), Nokia Xpress audio
messaging
- Animated screensavers, wallpaper, themes
- Internet: Opera Mini Browser, WAP 2.0, HSCSD, EDGE up to 118.4 kbps
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, modem, 3.5 mm AV connector
- Memory: 30 Mbytes plus microSD card (up to 2 Gbytes)
- Organiser: Alarm clock, calendar, to-do list, notes, calculator, stopwatch
and countdown timer
- Flight mode
- Triband
- Size: 108 x 44 x 10.5 mm
- Weight: 78g
- Talktime: 5.25 hours
- Battery standby: 400 hours
- Music playback: up to 24 hours

I will tell you what I think of the Nokia 5220 Music Express phone -
Absolute rubbish. I have never seen a piece of utter garbage like it
in my life and I never want to see another one in my life. They are
apalling. They reboot over and over - It won't switch off. Loading texts
stalls and the phone keeps rebooting. How did Nokia get away with putting
this junk out for sale to the general public. It is an absolute disgrace.
If you ever see one of these for sale anywhere - do not buy it - You
will have nothing but trouble with it. I hate the damn phone. Giving
it 1 star is more than generous - I would personally give it nothing.

Had this phone for 1 and a half months, and that screen is unreadable,
the phone can't delete anything, the speaker cuts out time to time when
calling or listening to music and the battery charger socket has caved
in, meaning this phone is useless. I got this phone because my Sony
Ericsson W302 broke (two broke in the space of one month) and it doesn't
recognise my memory card. Nokia have made a rubbish phone.

then it "couldn't find operator" so I sent it back. This one has the
same prob, but less frequently; worse than that, the radio has now stopped
working. It's been a pain in the arris, and my network won't change

14 day cooling off period after upgrade from my operator. Sent off to

strangely altered the format of all games and tracks downloaded directly
to it so they could no longer play - lost around £30 downloads, operator
refused to reimburse or change phone, stuck with it now until next January.
Charges fully in two hours, but battery life is appalling, needs charged

Besides, It is also quite fast as applications run and open within seconds.
And with GPRS enabled, it really is a treat. You can surf, and even
download games. The camera though 2.0 MP is good enough for shots -
I have taken soem very cool snaps with this camera. The main point is
the form factor - sleek and beautifual and loaded with features. (I
liked this phone better than the Nseries which are bulky and sound not

Just got the phone today. So far it seems excellent. Its got one of
the best speakers I've heard on any mobile. Taking the back off, which
on older nokias was never very simple, is now easy, just press the 'eject'
button, it pops off and you just pull it off, and the back is flexible
so it doesn't feel like your going to break it. The fact that it only
supports up to 2GiB SD Cards isn't too bad, I already have a camera
and an MP3 player, so the phone won't be used for those sort of things
really. The Maps feature sounds good, but as the European map is 1.6GB
I haven't been able to put it on yet as only a 512MB card was included.
Buttons are nice. Usual Nokia interface, which IMO is the easiest. Camera
looks very nice, even in dull conditions. Hoepfully it shall continue
to be good.

A well made phone, not too slim and fits well in the hand. Buttons are
well spaced and music buttons are well placed (flush to the case). The
speaker is LOUD, good for answering calls while driving by switching
on the loudspeaker option. Funky light effects (could be turned off).
Accessible USB and micro SD without opening the entire back cover. 3.5mm
headphone jack :) Camera is a little below average, doesn't take great
photos but good enough for reference photos. Forget the "Create Playlist"
option in Music, useless. Instead organize a playlist by using folders
with your computer. Then just open the folder you wish to play located
in "Gallery > Memory card (or Micro SD)", use options to "Mark all",
then use options again to "Open". Then everything in that chosen folder
becomes a playlist. Note: a folder within the folder chosen will not
be included in the playlist so it's best to group your music per folder
and have no subfolders ;) At last a descent battery from Nokia "music"
phone, 1050 mAh! meaning 2+ days worth of music on a charge. I think
this phone, for what it does, is well worth the price you pay compared
to what's out there in the market today. After years of Ericsson phones
i finally found a well made Nokia, Good job Nokia (at last).

I bought this phone, my second Xpress Music Nokia, not expecting too
much. The main draw was the headphone jack - this should be standard
on all phones! it's great and means you can use whatever headphones
you chose, rather than manufacturer supplied ones. So I got it home
and was instantly surprised by just how funky it looks, especially the
back cover. Very retro and interesting. Switch it on and you are greeted
by some interesting lights along the side... it's that sort of thing
that appeals to me! The screen is good, all text is clear and its fine
for looking at photos and such. Viewing the internet isn't as bad as
I'd expected so all told - there are certainly no dissappointments considering
the phones price bracket. My problem arrived when I switched on the
(otherwise brilliant) music player. I have a 1gb memory card with 19
songs on it - and yet the player was slow and unresponsive. It selected
tracks that I thought I'd click past 3 or 4 songs ago. Minor, but became
annoying. Worst of all was the phones constant want of turning of REGULARLY
while listening to music. It got so bad that after a week I returned
the phone. I bought the 5220 expecting little and was pleasantly surprised
in most areas (great games included!) but considering I paid £99 for
it - it really isn't worth that and the hardware isn't up to scratch.
By day three I was desperate for it to work and to be happy with it
and continue so for a year... but nope. The thought of using that phone
daily, as my main mobile - nope. Perhaps I had a dodgy one, I dunno.

I had done an internet study to buy a mobile to get good music quality, decent
camera, good memory and ofcorse good looks. My searched narrowed to
nokia 5220 and 5310. At last i settled for Nokia 5220 music express
for the following reasons - it has better sound quality, battery cost
is half of the latter at the same time, standby time is good. The points
infavour of 5310 are support for 4 GB micro SD card vs 2 GB card for
5220 and a more slim design, but as for me I liked the red model 5220
with it's quadrilateral design more eye catching and 2 GB was more than
required for me.

blud don't listen to these minor boys who moan about the phone. The
phone is sick! The 3.5mm jack means you can plug in any headphones or
speaker system. yeh! good if you're into tunes. Most of the bumbaklarts
who are winging about poor camera, poor video etc. they are a bunch
of wastemen. This is a BIG BOY fone.

I couldnt ask for more. Mine came with 512MB memory card as well as
speakers that uses its own batteries, thats just enough for all my music.so
far so good, but i think I like the phone so much. You cant buy a phone
for under £100 and expect to use it as an lcd television etc. so if
you want digital camera etc go get one.

It's an all round legendary phone. The camera is fantastic; the MP3
player is awesome; and the radio reception is so clear. The headphones
could be better, but apart from that it's the nearest thing to THE PERFECT
MOBILE PHONE! If I was to design a phone - it would look and feel just
like the 5220. I'll be keeping this phone for years as it is a classic
design :-)
