Nokia 5200 review

 Review: December 2006

In a nutshell: The Nokia 5200 looks almost the same as its big brother, the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic. Although the 5200 doesn't carry the XpressMusic branding, it's clearly designed as another music player phone, but is a mid-range phone targeted at the more budget-conscious consumer.

It's a slide design phone that looks much like the Nokia 6111. Nokia have improved the design of their slide phones recently and this one slides well. It's a nicely sized phone - the same size as the 5300 XpressMusic and a few grams lighter. The 5-way navigation key works nicely and there are dedicated camera and radio keys on the side for easy access to these functions. The volume keys on the side double up as zoom keys when the camera is in use. The display is not as good as the screen on the 5300, but is excellent when compared with other phones in this price range. The keypad slides down nicely and is very easy to use.

The 5200 comes with a good range of functions. The camera is of relatively poor quality - just VGA resolution (0.3 megapixels), but it does the job. The music player supports most common formats and is of good quality. There is also a stereo FM radio. The Nokia Stereo Headset HS-47 is included in the sales package and you can plug in your own headphones via the new 2.5mm Nokia AV connector which can accept regular-sized 3.5mm headphones via an adaptor.

No memory card is supplied in the sales package but the memory can be expanded to 2 Gbytes (enough to store 1,500 songs) with a MicroSD memory card. Connectivity includes Bluetooth 2.0, mini-USB and infrared. Battery life is average.

The 5200 is worth considering as an alternative to the 5300 XpressMusic if money is tight, and is a good mid-range phone. Its main weaknesses are the poor quality camera and the lack of a memory card in the sales package. Still, if you're looking for a user-friendly phone in a compact design with good music capabilities, the 5200 may be your phone.

Nokia 5200 features include:

  • VGA camera with 4x digital zoom
  • Video camera (176 x 144 pixels, 15 frames/s)
  • Display: TFT, 262,144 colours, 128 x 160 pixels
  • Music player (MP3, SpMidi, AAC, AAC+ and enhanced AAC+ formats)
  • Stereo FM radio
  • MP3 ringtones / video ringtones / 64-voice polyphonic ringtones
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, Instant Messaging, email
  • Animated screensavers and wallpapers
  • Alarm clock, Reminders, Stopwatch, Countdown timer, Calculator, Calendar, Notes
  • XHTML web browser
  • WAP, GPRS Class 10, HSCSD, EDGE
  • Memory: 5 Mbytes plus MicroSD memory card slot
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, infrared
  • Triband Size: 92 x 48 x 21 mm
  • Weight: 104g
  • Talktime: 3.2 hours
  • Battery standby: 263 hours

At first i was so excited to get it, but 3 years later it gets REALLY boring. I don't advice people to get this, because of its truly poor camera and messaging features. Although the music player produces relatively good sound... I am not happy with this phone. It also is more expensive given its poor features. In my opinion it was a waste of money. The design is relatively futuristic and the slide feature is not easily breakable. If you are looking for a phone that can call and text, this is the phone for you. But if you're like me, someone who wants cool features of a phone and something more, this isn't for you, at all.

i got my phone around about 2007- yes as it was my first phone it was great - easy to use and good looking. However i am going to up grade for a better model. I would recommend it for an older person who just uses the phone to call people. Not for youth or business people. Thumb up 8)

I've had this phone with me for about 4 years already.. for 3 years it's been in good condition and all. Eventhough it's fallen for numerous times,it's still as good as it is. However, the white parts starts to get greyish and ugly. Since it's been 'old' enough by now, the phone is starting to fall apart. I can't hear any sound from the phone anymore. Something's wrong with it and I don't bother to go and have it checked up. I wish to get another phone but I still love this one. It's a good phone really.

Still not sure how to upload music via a USB but it doesn't matter. Overall, a very sleek and smart phone! But, I am thinking of buying a new one today, just to have a new one, not because any of the reasons above. Great phone!

This is a very good phone, except for a few small niggles. I bought it in December 2007 for 45 and it's been worth every penny. It's functional, convenient and makes sense. The good: Mini-USB slot on the top makes computer connectivity a breeze, it has Bluetooth, awesome design, the buttons are easily accessible, the speaker is very loud, battery life is very good (for the first couple of years), MP3 ringtones. The bad: Awful camera, battery becomes bad at holding it's charge after a long while, occasionally crashes at startup (unusual for a Nokia), the speaker connection is a little bit faulty (probably just wear and tear), vibration isn't very strong, screen has a low resolution, very fat phone (Sticks out of your pocket a bit). Bearing in mind I've had this phone for 2 years, it's done very very well.

I've been having this phone for over 2 years now. After my Nokia 9100 got stolen i thought that almost nothing can replace it. But after buying this phone I realised that it can do most of what I need! Internet is super fast on it. Can take almost any instant messaging program. And is increadibly sturdy (probably let it fell over 100 times already) and still going strong! So far no problems with my phone, if a key gets stuck i just open the case and FIXED! It's comfy and the microSD slot solves all my music and application needs! A++

Using the internet is good but only if you have lots of money and you never call or text people. I was a bit dissapointed witht he camera, but when I found out it was a VGA camera I was shocked-it's too good to be a VGA camera. It is easy to use, and small, if not a bit chunky. The features are brill for the money, and i was really pleased with the dedicated buttons. the ringtones are cool too. It suits everyone, and the graphics and colours are really cool. I've has this phone for 1 and a half years now, and it has suited me well! It has never had to be fixed, and is still in very good condition. The music feature is excellent, but battery life decreases considerably when using the music feature - but it normally lastes an average of 2-3 days. The camera, even though it has a pretty pants camera, the photos don't look half bad, especially if you take a close up wthout zoooming in! The only reason I am getting a new phone now, is because of the dying speakers, but it has done me well! An excellent phone, especially at this price.

The shop I purchased it from would only let me have an exchange and the 5300 was the only other mobile they had on the orange network and so took that. From day 1 the earpiece rattles like made in conversations. Basicaly I agree that the music player is top notch but it is primarily a phone and as a phone it is very poor I intend to return it to the store and hopefully get my money back and 1 thing is for sure wont by another nokia will by LG Samsung or sony ericsson all of which are ten times better than nokia which are absolute junk. Also found that the lack of memory card or usb cable was also very poor seeing as this is advertised a a music phone.

The Nokia 5200 is a reasonably good phone. But... i found the phone very heavy and it's not stylish. The mp3 player is extremely good and the phone is easy to use. The design irritates me. The phone is quite hard to hold and acomplish tasks quickly. The camera is terrible, honestly. The image stabalisation is very poor quality and once you've taken a photo you have to hold the camera in the same place for 10 seconds to get a half decent photo. I was really dissapointed. Nokia's have impressed me in the past yet this phone's design has really dissapointed me. The phone's memory is rubbish, but i was very happy to see that a micro SD memory card was already provided. It's a nice phone for somebody very intrested in music but not so much in apperance or photo/video. It's not so good for somebody who want to get something done quickly. All in all a great value for money.

It's resistant - I dropped it about 5 time and sat on it even more, and yet I have no problems with it whatsoever. One thing every Nokia owner should do is get the latest Nokia PCSuite and install any software updates to their phone. You can really tell the difference. Also, I own mine in black. A friend of mine has it in red and she indeed has some issues with it not functioning well. I have no idea if the color is at fault.. :P

DONT BUY THIS PHONE IT WON'T WORK WHEN YOU GO ABROAD!!!!. I've had three now from Virgin with the 1GB card in less than 6 months. All three have had poor volume for ringtones and 'busy' cameras. The second one had a fault on the slider which meant when open you could only scroll right and down. The first and third have, when I've gone abroad, completely witheld my 'contacts' and address book data, miraculously reappears when you get back to UK. Plus when abroad if you take three pictures tells you your memory is too full to receive operator messages , you must delete data. Again this fault clears when back in UK. Virgin maintain its my Sim card which at 4 years old is TOO OLD for the technology when you go abroad and the phone then 'roams'. Their solution is too offer me a free replacement Sim but I've argued my case and am now getting my fourth phone in six months! NOT A 5200!! Anyone else had this problem wiih a 5200 when travelling abroad????? malsmith

Love the features of the phone but since I bought it September it has been in for repairs 3 times!!! Also has lack of internal memory and average battery life. However, the sound quality is great and it is easy to find you way around the phone.

Just got this phone today. Som far it does all that it says on the package. Good music player, good volume. Easy to use. The camera is not very good. It is a nice size, and feels good and sturdy. Definitely a good buy.
