Nokia 3120 Review
Phone rating:
Note: Not to be confused with the newer Nokia
3120 Classic!
Review: August 2005. Updated August 2008.
The Nokia 3120 is a compact and basic phone with a smart metallic finish and
a conventional design.
There's no camera on the 3120 although there is an option to attach Nokia's
"fun camera" if you want to take pics. The display is a passive matrix
display that isn't easy to read in sunlight and has just 4096 colours, although
that's all you can realistically expect at this price point. The handsfree speaker
is a welcome touch, and the battery life is good. One fun feature is that the
backlight flashes rythmically when the phone rings.
This is an acceptable entry-level phone, but quite cheap and flimsy-looking.
The keypad is conventional, but not as easy to use as it could be. Not the best
entry-level phone.
Features of the Nokia 3120 include:
- Display: passive matrix, 4096 colours, 128 x 128 pixels
- Integrated hands-free speaker
- Polyphonic ringtones
- Messaging: SMS, MMS
- Rhythmic backlight alert
- Speed dialing for 8 preset names
- Java games: Snake EX2, Beach Rally and Bowling
- Animated screensavers
- Personal organiser functions: Alarm clock with any tone as alarm, Stopwatch
and countdown timer, Calculator
- Automatic key guard
- XHTML web browser
- WAP 1.2.1, GPRS
- Connectivity: Pop-Port and USB connector
- Tri-band (GSM 900/1800/1900)
- Size: 102 x 43 x 20 mm
- Weight: 84g
- Talktime: 2 - 6 hours
- Battery standby: 170 - 410 hours

When I decided to buy this phone in 2003, I was actually looking for
a basic phone with pop-port for attachable camera. It would have been
cool to get a cam-phone, but economics dictates quality over luxury.
Never encountered any problem with this one. I bought a cam-phone last
year (Motorola C-651), but still prefer to use this one as my main mobile
phone. This may not have MP3 ringtone or integrated camera but the resolution
is next to A1. I got real value for my money. Am planning to get a 3-G
phone and could swap an older phone, but I don't think I'm just ready
to give this up yet.

I migrated from AT&T(w a Siemens also good) to Cingular. This fone is
actualy a replacement for my first and second, and much more expensive
choices. The previous phones were the top of the line models from Samsung
and Motorola and were both unreliable POS's. The Nokia may not have
the built in camera but one is available to add on. I am a biologist,
surfer, skater, boater, etc so my fones take a beating-the Nokias deffinitely
hold up the best. Plus, even though you can't download mp3 rings, you
can use the digital voice recorder to make your own of the songs YOU
want-it's easy and you can get some PUNK on your fone while everyone
else's plays crappy pop songs. Anyway, its a good piece-get one...

For those who find the "lack of a volume control" an issue (as I did
- who reads manuals these days?) the trick is to use the < and > keys
on the central joypad to lower and raise the volume WHILST IN A CALL
- this setting is then saved for your subsequent calls. Now a very good
colour tri-band basic phone!

for me to share my experience with it with the world! this phone has
been outstanding! it is so reliable and its batteey life is out of this
world! it lasts at least 2 weeks but it has lasted 2.5 before. its so
simple to use and is perfect for texting. colour screen, VERY easy to
use, well set out phone book, and very nice looking. the only bad point
i have to make for this phone is that it does not have a built-in camera
but you can buy a plug in one for it. otherwise this pohne is amazing
and i would definitly recommend it.

Just gone from PAYG to contract (Orange - O2) and this was the free
handset. Does what I need from a phone but still prefer my old Nokia
6210e which is more robust, easier to use the keys, and reception and
sound quality outstrips the 3210. Screen is not easy to see in sun light.
Basically not a bad phone but there are definitely better ones out there.

well techinically i've had this on' faithful for over a year++ now,
and well i've never seen a hardier phone! literally wear and tear sort
of thing. well it rolled down two flights of stairs just to sustain
minor scratches and stuff. was a surprise the covers dindt even fly
off. well screen didnt crack, to my surprise lol well generally it's
just a phone, and a phone should do what a phone's gotta do. excellent
texting and calling, i must say. well if i want hot pics- i've got my
own digital camera, which produces real pictures- not those scrawny
blur lookin' ones on your phone! and i do have my own MP3 player, so
why would i need anything else jammmed into my phone? well- it does
scratch quite easily.. but i've not had any probs with it since i got
it! honest! even with those nasty encounters on concrete floors and
stairs. definitely a phone for the smart. smart people buy cameras to
take pics, mp3 players for their music and phones for calling + texting.
call me whatever lol

Overall this phone is ok. It is a cheap and basic modle for those that
do not want anything fancy. My dad has been given this as an upgrade
from the 3410, and although it is an improvement, generally it feels
cheaply made and does not seem like it will stand up to any form of
punishment. The only gripes are as follows - Keys are hard work for
big fingers Back cover that was supplied was very hard to fit and still
does not seem to sit properly Phone feels very cheap and flimsy compared
to Nokia 3xxx models of the past. So going by the gripes i deduct one
star for the keys and one star for the overall cheapness! If you want
a phone that has basic features but in a modern shell this is for you,
however if you want a phone that is built to last and feels well made
and is just generally good then steer clear of Nokia, a company that
is trading of past glory and reputation that is no longer market leader,
head towards my personal favorite Samsung, or consider SonyEricsson
or Motorola carefully. Peace

each time i just pick up the pieces put them back together and i'm good
to go, no harm done. The hands free is brilliant and real handy, The
phone's so portable and well designed. If you're looking for a modern

This is the best phone I've ever had, especially the functionality of
the speakerphone feature. However, the speakerphone feature does have
one problem, because you cannot begin a call with the speaker enabled.
You must wait until the call connects and then switch it to speaker.
If someone in Japan had somehow thought of this in it's development,
the phone would be flawless. Other than that, it's the best.

Had to replace it 3 times within a year because some buttons stopped
working. My wife wears it on a neck string - this is great in a car
because it has a speaker. In the kitchen, however (and my wife sometimes
cooks) environment is not always clean, and here I guess is a problem.
When I take it apart and wipe inside with alcohol all buttons work OK.
After a while some of them stop working. I think Nokia learned how to
make phones cheap, but I am sure old and bulky phones were much more
reliable.

Nokia still have a lot to learn about keypads and ease of use. At least
the keys are bigger than some offerings - but still a daft idea to have
larger ones down the middle. The lower case text on the keys is microscopic!!!
Yet there is space on the buttons for more eye-sight friendly sizes.

nice. All the features work as advertised, the display is not as good
as my 6230 though. You can really notice the lack of contrast and it
looks a bit washed out (although at 100euro you can't complain that
much). Lots of nice little features like deleting oldest sms messages
when the memory fills up but some features seem needlessly missing (like
text size in browser and grid menu view instead of one menu icon per

Great phone, nice looking, lightweight, compatible with a farly generic
car kit. we own 10 handsets as part of a buisines and it has not let
us down. a camera would be useful, to take pictures of sites and send
instantly, but still a grgeat phone.

People People!! We're reviewing a PHONE!! No special features (cam,
mp3, etc.) but the PHONE is outstanding!! Great reception, clear voice
through speaker and speakerphone, sturdy construction (it has "visited"
the floor a couple of times, and it still works) You need a PHONE thats
reliable, this is it.

I had this phone for only a few weeks coz i was borrowing it from a
friend and i thought it was good. No camera was good because they take
up a lot of memory, the tones were good and the size was great, really
sall and light. Keep the good work coming NOKIA!

The Nokia 3120 offers an understated design style than its ancestor--the
3100. Redesigned keys (though the keypad sticks sometimes) and a uniform
color across its face gives it a sleeker, stylish look. With all the
extra features in this phone, like the tri-ban, java downloads USB streaming,
computer connectivity, speaker phone capabilities, etc... I’m
disappointed, though; that Nokia didn’t boost the screen resolution
from 4,096 colors to 46K (it would have been a greatest phone I ever
had). Fortunately, I only need a basic phone that calls and texts, good
enough for a college student like me. If you don’t need the extra
bling-bling features, like a integrated camera, FM radio, and stuff…
Then you should go for this phone. Overall, it’s a sturdy (relatively)
phone (which is good, because I keep dropping my phone, laughs!), its
easy to use, and its offers the basic Nokia goodies (like the classic
Snake Game, which I been looking for whenever I 217;m buying a Nokia
phone). I got it at an equivalent price of USD130*, the phone’s
price is wallet-friendly, but you should be able to find it for less
with service.

at least have an infrared port... It can only support 4-channels on
the polyphonic tones. other than that its cool...

Fine phone. Signal strength, sound quality no problem. Predictive text
works well. You'd be surprised how many non-Nokias can't start sentences
with a capital or handle apostrophes. I'm not a 12 year old. A bit of
grammar's good. Screen isn't easy to read once backlight goes off so
it's harder to check for messages with a glance. That's true of all
the colour screen phones, I believe. SAR level could be worse. Battery
fine. Actually, battery's pretty good cos I can't take photos with this
phone. Finally, worth mentioning that this is pretty much the same as
the 3100 and the replacement cases are interchangeable I believe, should
you see one much cheaper than the other.

This phone only cost me £70.00 new, and its great! It's simple
to use, looks great and has a good sized keypad. Shame it does'nt have
a camera, but do you really need a camera? Loads of message memory and
features. I'd Reccomend it to anyone who is'nt a whizz with technology,
and wants something stylish.
