Nokia 3120 Classic review

 Review: August 2008

Last updated May 2009

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: This is a good entry-level 3G phone with a classic user-friendly design. Features include a 2 megapixel camera with flash, MP3 player and FM radio. With the capacity to expand its memory to 4 GB, and with reasonable battery life, this is a recommended phone for those who don't need to have the latest gadget-laden fashion phone.

Review

The Nokia 3120 Classic is an entry-level 3G phone, and follows Nokia's tradition of producing classic no-nonsense phones. There isn't too much to go wrong with the 3120 Classic, and indeed it seems to be pretty much problem-free, although the audio quality isn't Nokia's best.

It's a very lightweight slim phone that will slot into any pocket. Although plasticky in look and feel, it seems to be sturdy enough to withstand everyday abuse. The keypad is a good size and is very easy to use, with sensibly shaped buttons and good, positive feedback. The display is a good size at 2.0 inches across, and over-delivers when it comes to colours (16 million!) and resolution (QVGA, i.e. 320 x 240 pixels - as good as most high-end phones costing much more.) Gone are the days when Nokia produced sub-standard LCD screens in its entry level phones.

As mentioned, this is a 3G phone that also supports quadband GSM, so you can literally use it wherever you travel. It's equipped with a decent enough 2 megapixel camera with flash, and can record videos and make 2-way video calls. It's certainly not the best camera phone around, and it can't match the Sony Ericsson K770i that costs only a little more, but it holds its own against many similarly priced competitors. As well as taking pictures the 3120 Classic will also play your music collection or let you listen to its FM radio. If you buy a 3.5mm headphone adapter you can plug in your own stereo headphones, or you can use a stereo Bluetooth headset if you prefer. With an onboard memory of just 24 Mbytes, you'll only be able to store a handful of MP3 tracks, but you can expand the memory to 4GB with a microSD card, giving you enough room to store around 1,000 MP3's.

You'll also find a good range of other features such as Java downloads, wallpaper, ringtones & themes, an Opera mini browser for mobile web surfing, and a good organiser.

Battery life is acceptable, but don't believe Nokia's official figures of 12.5 days' standby. Most users should get a few days' usage, which is better than many 3G phones.

The Nokia 3120 may not be the phone to buy if you want all the latest gadgets, or if you plan to wow your mates in the pub, but for a good no-nonsense usable phone, this one does the job very well indeed.

I bought this nokia 3120 years ago, as a spare phone. It has a feature that can be activated now. Rarely used, while upgrading the firmware, the phone is suddenly dead. There is no way, up to now, to revive it. I am disappointed and this is not environmentally friendly. In Canada, there is no rep of nokia that are willing to help me with your phone, unless under warranty.

I just feel that i have to add one good argument to the well-written initial description above. The sound quality during current call speaking !. I have had three GSMīs and one other 3G(Sony Ericsson Z600..I HATE THAT !),but none of those were even close, regarding sound quality to/from whom you talk to. -The speaker itself, for external use, arenīt either better or worse than any other phone iīm familiar with though. -One other thing that is good(or bad, depends who youīll ask) is the vibration function !.-Itīs almost hysterical !. If you leave the phone on a wooden furniture, you can shut of the ring function completely, because everyone in your home will we waked up anyway !(The intensity from the vibration may perheps work as a substitute for a "bunny stick"/"ladyīs little friend" ?!..).

Finally, one clear disadvantage: The battery !. Sure, you can surf some internet, chatting, filming or take some pictures, listen to music,or even watch a movie(I you have good eyes and steady vision !). BUT: NOT "ON THE RUN" !. Believe it or not,the finns has done an excellent job, combining a low-mid-priced phone, with some standards you would only find in the premium segment on the market. -- BUT: Their collueges on the battery development department havenīt been any successful at all !.If you go for some entertaiment functions, your battery will run out in less than an hour !. -And even after halv-an-hour,the battery will no longer be capable of phone calls longer than app. 10 minutes. To use the phone to its full extend, you should not be very far from a AC-contact or a carīs lighter plug-in(or some kind of USB-charging device). I found this a little annoying, but at least,it works for me though. I have had this since June 2008,and i plan to continuing using it for about two or three years. Besides from the cheesy battery,itīs a very nice phone. If you can remember to keep the battery level under control,it will be your faithful "co-worker" almost in any situation, even if youīre on the countryside, and has only a half-weak GSM-signal to count on,IT WILL PROBABLY WORK !. Its calculator, time and alarm clock, calendar, and some more everyday-kind of stuff will stand at your disposal, and itīs nice and neat to !. /M.

I charged it up on Monday night, used it for 1 call of about 30 secs and it went dead on the Friday night. To all the people who find the light goes out after 3 secs you can change it in the settings-enhancements-charger-lights. Unfortunately there are only 2 selections, automatic or on. I have bought a USB cable for this and thought it would also charge the phone when plugged into the PC, but it doesn't. Does anyone have any info on this?

I admire my 3120 classic. so good looking, weightless , thin , and best of all it's got the nokia brain. impressive pictures taking although it's a 2 mega pixel cam. nice videos can be taken but better in daylight. good flash. impressive radio reception with a nice smart radio player. you can hear it also throught the speaker which is very loud yet delivers true sounds. but the max volume in the radio player isn't as load as it is in the media player (mp3aacvideos..). the media player is great . let u organize playlists or choose albumsartistetc. it has a decent equalizer coming up with a number of presets and 2 custommized ones whic is very cool. u can choose a nice stereo wenhancer feature which widen the sound in your ears. of course it is best using headphones. the appliance has a 2.5 (smaller than the usual 3.5) audio port, but you can buy an adapter of course or use as I do , the NOkia rs-47 stereo headphones + mic headset. it is very comfortable. it's screen is not too big yet very clear and big enough for you to watch your favourite movieseinfeld chapter etc.. it has 16 millions collors which brings joy to your eyes. battery life is decent , can last couple of days.. surfing the net is very fast even in 2G , it has a built in navigator and another surfing program "mini opera" which makes it very easy to use. I'm very happy for buying this phone. few lacks that have been found: no WIfi (but 100 free megabyte web surfing is enough for me :) ) no support of viewing pdf, office files I think after long searches for phones latley taht this is the best phone (best phone is off course a function of the user's needs ) goodbye

this phone somehow manages to please and offend in equal measure, i am on 3 contract out here on the west coast of ireland, having got rid of a nice looking lg u970 because of battery life, i got the nokia 3120, most of my other phones were noks, and the 6233 (on which the 3120 is obviously modeled)still handles my meteor account with a week between charges,so, why does it only last a day and a half with very moderate usage? (and 2 replacement batteries later). the sound is another disapointment, again, 6233, great sound, come on nokia, good battery life and sound through speaker quality are fundimentals in phones now... but on the plus side, still the best text experience out there,i have yet to find a better user interface than on this phone, again, like 6233 but lovely quick keypad.a decent flash camera,an easy to navigate music player and computer bluetooth connectivity makes this phone a great addition to anyone relying on there mobile as a mass storage device that handles phone calls!!!!. photos, music, speech, so,on balance, a very capable phone, just be sure to pack a generator if your going away for a few days.... or borrow a mates 6233!!!!.

The internal memory is a bit stingy so get a Micro SD card and you're away. Battery life is good. For the price this phone rocks!!!

I bought this phone while on vacation in another country 3 months ago. I live in Bahrain. To check on voice mail messages, one needs to dial 117 and follow the prompts here. Now, all of a sudden, when i dial 117 I get "attempting emergency call". It takes me to the police. ????!!! Nokia care says it is the software and to have it reloaded. I did. The cell phone shop says its vodafone. vodafone says it the cellphone. Nokia says they only honor warranties in country of purchase. Im screwed. Next phone, motorola. Buy for good nokia.

Stylish, sleek and very user friendly phone. Has great features...yet disappointing is the battery life and the display light. Battery stand-by is definitely not 300 hours, far from it and the display light goes off every 5 seconds.

I just bought this phone a few hours ago after reading any reviews that I could get on the net. Its an awesone phone with a really good price. I bought it at a Nokia Store for Rs. 7460, which to me is a really good price for a 3g phone and a 3 MP camera, not to mention the flash, video recording and the display clarity. A Very good phone.

Just got this phone direct from Nokia after having a 6230i for several years. Love it. Not quite as solid as 6230i but is slimmer and the larger keys and screen are great. Battery life is better than expected, lasting a good 4-5 days. Camera is good but what I particulkarly like is being able to get all my emails. THe browser is fast, especially when using the Opera browser. Its just fantastic. I love every part of it. Shame it didn't come with a memory card but bought a 2gb off ebay for good price. Now putting a lot of music on after buying adapter to use normal earphones. Nearly waited for the Nokia 6700, which comes out later this year, but this will definately do for now. Highly recommended.

I got this phone when I changed from pay as you go with Virgin to a monthly contract. Personally, when I got it out of the box it looked cheap and plasticy and plain looking and when I tried to insert the sim card, the flimsy aluminium card cover broke right away, so I thought I'd just pop the contract sim into my 6300 pay and go phone, and stick with the best, its weighty, and very stylish, so Nokia can keep the 3120 classic! Would not recommend this!
