Nokia 3120 Classic Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: This is a good entry-level 3G phone with a classic
user-friendly design. Features include a 2 megapixel camera with flash,
MP3 player and FM radio. With the capacity to expand its memory to 4
GB, and with reasonable battery life, this is a recommended phone for
those who don't need to have the latest gadget-laden fashion phone.
Review: August 2008. Updated May 2009.
The Nokia 3120 Classic is an entry-level 3G phone, and follows Nokia's
tradition of producing classic no-nonsense phones. There isn't too much
to go wrong with the 3120 Classic, and indeed it seems to be pretty
much problem-free, although the audio quality isn't Nokia's best.
It's a very lightweight slim phone that will slot into any pocket.
Although plasticky in look and feel, it seems to be sturdy enough to
withstand everyday abuse. The keypad is a good size and is very easy
to use, with sensibly shaped buttons and good, positive feedback. The
display is a good size at 2.0 inches across, and over-delivers when
it comes to colours (16 million!) and resolution (QVGA, i.e. 320 x 240
pixels - as good as most high-end phones costing much more.) Gone are
the days when Nokia produced sub-standard LCD screens in its entry level
phones.
As mentioned, this is a 3G phone that also supports quadband GSM, so
you can literally use it wherever you travel. It's equipped with a decent
enough 2 megapixel camera with flash, and can record videos and make
2-way video calls. It's certainly not the best camera phone around,
and it can't match the Sony Ericsson
K770i that costs only a little more, but it holds its own against
many similarly priced competitors. As well as taking pictures the 3120
Classic will also play your music collection or let you listen to its
FM radio. If you buy a 3.5mm headphone adapter you can plug in your
own stereo headphones, or you can use a stereo Bluetooth headset if
you prefer. With an onboard memory of just 24 Mbytes, you'll only be
able to store a handful of MP3 tracks, but you can expand the memory
to 4GB with a microSD card, giving you enough room to store around 1,000
MP3's.
You'll also find a good range of other features such as Java downloads,
wallpaper, ringtones & themes, an Opera mini browser for mobile
web surfing, and a good organiser.
Battery life is acceptable, but don't believe Nokia's official figures
of 12.5 days' standby. Most users should get a few days' usage, which
is better than many 3G phones.
The Nokia 3120 may not be the phone to buy if you want all the latest
gadgets, or if you plan to wow your mates in the pub, but for a good
no-nonsense usable phone, this one does the job very well indeed.
Features of the Nokia 3110 Classic include:
- 2 megapixel camera with flash
- Video recorder & 3G video calling
- Display: TFT, 16 million colours, 240 x 320 pixels (2.0 inches)
- Stereo MP3 player (MP3, MP4, AAC, eAAC+ and Windows Media Player
formats & OMA DRM 2.0)
- Stereo FM radio with Visual Radio
- MP3 ringtones / 128-voice polyphonic ringtones
- Integrated handsfree speaker
- Voice features: Push to talk, Enhanced voice dialing, Voice commands,
Voice recording
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, and email with attachments,
Instant messaging, Nokia Xpress Audio Messaging
- Java games
- Wallpaper, animated screensavers, themes
- Organizer with calendar, to-do list, and notes
- Internet: GPRS, EDGE,
web browser, Opera Mini browser
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, micro USB 2.0, 2.5 mm AV and 2.0 mm
charger connectors
- Memory: 24 Mbytes plus microSD memory card slot (up to 4 GB)
- Quad-band GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900) plus dual-band WCDMA (850,2100
/ 900,2100 / 850,1900)
- Size: 111 x 45 x 13 mm
- Weight: 85g
- Talktime: 2.75 hours (3G) - 3.33 hours (2G)
- Battery standby: 300 hours

I bought this nokia 3120 years ago, as a spare phone. It has a feature
that can be activated now. Rarely used, while upgrading the firmware,
the phone is suddenly dead. There is no way, up to now, to revive it.
I am disappointed and this is not environmentally friendly. In Canada,
there is no rep of nokia that are willing to help me with your phone,
unless under warranty.

I just feel that i have to add one good argument to the well-written
initial description above. The sound quality during current call speaking
!. I have had three GSM´s and one other 3G(Sony Ericsson Z600..I
HATE THAT !),but none of those were even close, regarding sound quality
to/from whom you talk to. -The speaker itself, for external use, aren´t
either better or worse than any other phone i´m familiar with
though. -One other thing that is good(or bad, depends who you´ll
ask) is the vibration function !.-It´s almost hysterical !. If
you leave the phone on a wooden furniture, you can shut of the ring function
completely, because everyone in your home will we waked up anyway !(The
intensity from the vibration may perheps work as a substitute for a
"bunny stick"/"lady´s little friend" ?!..).
Finally, one clear disadvantage: The battery !. Sure, you can surf some
internet, chatting, filming or take some pictures, listen to music,or even
watch a movie(I you have good eyes and steady vision !). BUT: NOT "ON
THE RUN" !. Believe it or not,the finns has done an excellent job, combining
a low-mid-priced phone, with some standards you would only find in the
premium segment on the market. -- BUT: Their collueges on the battery
development department haven´t been any successful at all !.If
you go for some entertaiment functions, your battery will run out in
less than an hour !. -And even after halv-an-hour,the battery will no
longer be capable of phone calls longer than app. 10 minutes. To use
the phone to its full extend, you should not be very far from a AC-contact
or a car´s lighter plug-in(or some kind of USB-charging device).
I found this a little annoying, but at least,it works for me though.
I have had this since June 2008,and i plan to continuing using it for
about two or three years. Besides from the cheesy battery,it´s
a very nice phone. If you can remember to keep the battery level under
control,it will be your faithful "co-worker" almost in any situation, even
if you´re on the countryside,and has only a half-weak GSM-signal
to count on,IT WILL PROBABLY WORK !. Its calculator, time and alarm clock, calendar, and
some more everyday-kind of stuff will stand at your disposal, and it´s
nice and neat to !. /M.

well i dont normally post reviews but i like this phone so much... purchased
last week, does everything i need it to do, as im on 3g, i find it difficult
to get signal in my area, but with this phone it actually works, onboard
memory is very low but Just found a micro sd card, so now i can play
all my mp3 tracks.. landed :) takes good photos too considering it is
only a 2mp camera. keypad takes a bit of getting used too, as ive just
come from using a sony ericsson but starting to get the hang of it now.
battery life is superb, considering i use it for internet, call, texts
etc... easily the best phone ive had in terms of battery life (unless
you count the old nokia phones!) I only paid 60quid for it delivered,
so im well impressed, my only quibble is i wish i bought it sooner :)

the call volume. I bought a Nokia 3120 and have had no issues with reception

for texting and good messaging capabilities. Very good 2mp camera and
good video capabilities, flash works excellently by the way. It also

am on 3 contract out here on the west coast of ireland, having got rid
of a nice looking lg u970 because of battery life, i got the nokia 3120,
most of my other phones were noks, and the 6233 (on which the 3120 is
obviously modeled)still handles my meteor account with a week between
charges,so, why does it only last a day and a half with very moderate
usage? (and 2 replacement batteries later). the sound is another disapointment, again,
6233, great sound, come on nokia, good battery life and sound through
speaker quality are fundimentals in phones now... but on the plus side,
still the best text experience out there,i have yet to find a better
user interface than on this phone, again, like 6233 but lovely quick
keypad.a decent flash camera,an easy to navigate music player and computer
bluetooth connectivity makes this phone a great addition to anyone relying
on there mobile as a mass storage device that handles phone calls!!!!.
photos, music, speech, so,on balance, a very capable phone, just be
sure to pack a generator if your going away for a few days.... or borrow

ask for. The internet speed is fast (good on Skype & Facebook) and the
CAMERA IS BRILLIANT ESPECIALLY USING THE FLASH.It's only 2Mp but the
quality is outstanding. The 2Mp camera on my 6120 is rubbish by comparison.
Sound quality is great and reception reliable. Some people may not like

a good 4-5 days. Camera is good but what I particulkarly like is being
able to get all my emails. THe browser is fast, especially when using
the Opera browser. Its just fantastic. I love every part of it. Shame
it didn't come with a memory card but bought a 2gb off ebay for good

N70 in S40 Platform. Design is not that bad. Main functions as phone
(messaging, call, organisers, etc.) work excellent. Sound works great
if placed with loudspeaker facing flat on surface. Camera is not shy
(but I hate the red eyes, fault of the flash). Video is excellent when
set in higher resolution (I've recorded fireworks this New Year & it's
beautiful). Thumbs up to web browsing, can check regularly my yahoo
e-mail, friendster & facebook account. Also works good in YouTube (But
u need a strong 3G signal)! Data transfer works fast via Bluetooth or
data cable! Just got disappointed, package included a single sided head
set & no data cable! But still recommended! For those who don't know
how to play the radio in loudspeaker, you need first plug in your headset
(it function as antenna so it is a must), select settings, then loudspeaker!
I still wonder why opera mini's browsing is free of charge in my first
2 months of use. But now, it charges my load. But still great phone!

I asked my friend who has a telecommunications shop to sell me the buy
i could get a on pay as you go basis he have of the 3120c and now i
an indeed very happy which delivers everything you need from a modern
phone and is unlike most of its rivals problem free, and very good value
for money since it costs only £80. Also i dont know why on the reviews
they say that the memory case could be upto 4gb, i use an 8gb case and
works wonderfull.

I got mine about six months ago, on my existing three contract. For
the first time I actually use my phone regularly to listen to music.
I use a Nokia bluetooth stereo headset, which is quite convinient for
cycling, as you don't need to worry about missing a call either. I bought
a micro SDHC card for about £3 to expand its memory. The battery life
is quite reasonable. For moderate use (say 45min of music over bluetooth,
20 min call, a couple of texts and 30min gaming each day), you only
need to re-charge it once every 3-4 days. I also use it for playing
music over my surround sound system at home, which has bluetooth. I
must admit, it has crashed a few times (restarted itself) when I was
trying to play music over bluetooth, having just updated the SD card
on my computer, but overall the performance and usability is quite acceptable
and much better than any other phones in the same range that I have
seen. Another very nice feature is that it is slim and lightweight,
and you can actually carry it around in your pocket (something that
I was never comfortable to do with my other phones).

Been with this phone for 2 weeks now and I can say that I made a great
choice. As you can see Nokia is creating lots of Classics and almost
all of them are wonderful just like this one - Nokia 3120 Classic. I
was using my 6 month old Nokia 1209 and that one is a workhorse, though
small it is very sturdy and reliable. However, I need to replace it
for I need a quadband phone and found this one and it's a gem. Though
plastic, it is solid...very good call clarity for it has a Call Clarity
feature, slim physique, good camera, decent video recorder (CIF) which
is better than QCIF, and a well appreciated battery life. Before I selected
this phone, I was thinking which one to buy - Nokia 3610 fold or this
one. Well, I like the fold design but it is a little expensive and feature-wise
it does not match the 3120 Classic. This one has a visual radio too,
one thing it lacks is the Nokia Maps and sad to say it is not downloadable
as of now for S40 UI. Considering what you will get - 2MP Camera, Quadband,
good keypad, cool battery life, solid construction, and reasonable price
- this one is a wonderful investment. Get it you won't be disappointed.

Just bought the phone yesterday as an early Christmas present for my
wife. She loves it, I mean we love it. Took some pictures of the kids
with the flash. Photo quality is not as good as digital cameras but
for casual and ad hoc photo taking, it is more than enough. First thing
my wife said when she put it in her trouser pocket, "Wow! It is so slim
and sleek." We have yet tested out its 3G video calling because the
area where we live has no 3G coverage. We have to go to the town to
have 3G coverage. The screen and colors are as good as my 6300. I am
a little worry about its plastic casing. Although it feels good and
light to hold, it is kind of fragile. The phone also comes with PTT
(Push-To-Talk). So she can use it like a walkie-talkie to communicate
with me whole day during an outing. The phone is great and we think
it is worth it at this price with so many features especially the 3G
video calling, PTT etc.

A cheap 3G phone which does exactly what it is supposed to do. Video
camera is excellent, though if you move it fast while recording the
image seems to wobble a bit, call clarity is pretty good and so is volume,
though call volume does not seem to be adjustable. Ringtones are loud
enough, battery life seems good so far. Camera is decent quality, though
colours can be messed up, especially in photos with both dark areas
and very bright areas. Buttons and keypad are good, the back of the
phone is clipped on very tightly. Menus are quick and do not lag, you
can switch between GMS and UMTS (3G) networks. The screen is great quality,
nice and bright, but the flash for the camera is not; even in dark areas,
photos look better without the flash. Without the flash, photos come
out fairly grainy, but do not come out particularly dark. Menus are
easy to navigate, and the "graphite" theme looks very nice. Phone switches
on quickly and has never crashed on me.

This is a good phone considering the price, but still has some flaws. For
example I was so annoyed that it doesn`t show call timer during a call
so you don`t know how long you have been talking. Can someone please
tell me if this is fixable? Also the camera isn`t very good indoor and
neither outdoor.

It doe's what is says on the box. Nothing special about this budget
'phone, particularly disappointed with the quality. My screen scratched
badly within the first couple of days, the supplier was not interested.
I have had an old Nokia 1600 for ages and the the quality of materials
is far superior and still lokks in better condition than the Classic.

p.s. If you get the Nokia 3120 on the 3 network be forewarned that it
is NOT compatible with Skype. Also, the memory card slot is very sticky.
The card does not "click" in correctly. I've tried a number of different
cards, all the same problem. On the plus side though, the battery life
is pretty good and the screen image is great for the price :-)

The great thing about the Nokia 3120 is its simplicity. It's a no-fuss
phone that gets the job done. On the outside however it's a different
story. The half-curvy shape of the phone feels strange, sort of unbalanced.
The keypad feels odd and cheap. If Nokia had matached the efficient
interior with a more classic exterior this could have been a top mid-range
phone. For £50 on PAYG though can't really complain. p.s. Nokia don't
include proper stereo earphones.

Bought this to replace my 3110 Classic as it had 3G and a bigger screen.
Not impressed. Tacky, and the case started creaking after less than
20 minutes. Poor keypad, or as Nokia call it, a keymat, which actually
is more accurate. Such good potential but let down by Nokia again being
cheap and using poor materials. Have just been online and bought a new
3110 Classic instead, so I am sending the 3120 Classic back to it's
supplier. Shame.

I had to replace my Nokia 6300 because 3 are updating their network,
so I needed a 3G phone. I bought the 3120 Classic as it was one of the
cheaper phones available. Its a great little phone, very lightweight,
great resolution bright screen, easy to navigate and has a great 2MP
camera with flash. The flash makes all the difference, my old 6300 simply
could not perform in lower light conditions. The flash removes the dither(picture
noise), the 1600x1200 images look great. The 3120 records video at up
to 640x480 and is of a very high quality, it easily outshines the 6300s
176x144 recording. One thing I highly recommend is buying a decent size
microSD card for the phone, if you want to record video, store videos,
MP3s, pictures etc. According to Nokia's website the 3120 takes cards
up to 4GB in size, although that seems a little unnecessary unless you
plan on recording a lot of videos, 1GB or 2GB would be sufficient in
most cases. With a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter any headphones can be used
with the phone, these can be bought very cheap online. Playing videos
on the screen is great, especially in fullscreen mode which fills the
screen nicely(the 6300 had an odd fullscreen mode). The phone came with
a few games but the only one of any worth is Sudoku, 100 easy, 100 medium
and 100 hard puzzles and only 78KB, amazing. The 3120 has a lot of multimedia
functionality but works just as well just as a phone, in making calls
its nice and clear, the ringing tone is loud and the ringtone can be
any MP3 stored on the phone or memory card(I'm currently using the Sopranos
theme). I highly recommend the Nokia 3120 Classic, its a great little
handset and is a steal at £69.99
