Review

The Nokia 2610 is intended for those who want a very easy-to-use phone that has all the basic features of a phone and no more. It is definitely a very smart-looking phone, that looks more expensive than it really is. At just 18mm it's nice and slim, and weighs just 91g. The keypad and 5-way navigation key are extremely easy to use.

Whilst there are no fun features such as a camera or radio on the 2610, it has the basics, including an integrated handsfree speaker, a voice recorder, and supports most types of messaging. However, the big problem with the 2610 is the poor LCD display. This is very hard to read when outdoors, even in low to moderate sunlight, making the phone virtually unusable outside. Nokia seem to have realised this and the 2610 uses larger than average fonts, but outdoors it just isn't readable. The Nokia 2310 is a better phone and with the addition of an FM radio.

This is a no non sense phone, and it works perfectly. As others have said, the screen is hard to read in direct sunlight, you have to shade it with your hand. Indoors no issues.

This is a great little basic phone and the only phone i've ever had that doesn't make me want to swear and throw it across the floor! The phone was actually a freebie given by the shop where i purchased a much more flash all singing all dancing number,( which has long since been relegated to the second hand shop)! and this is my third year of using this phone "just as a stand-by until i get a new one". The battery life is great,it's logical and simple to use with only one or two very minor bad points. Point is it works,it's small,it's a phone and does what it says on the box. If you want the latest gadget or an objet d'art buy something different, but if you just want to get on with life without being hampered by your means of communication i highly recommend you buy this phone...and save yourself some money.

Nice basic phone for INDOOR use. But to my mind a mobile phone should also be useable outdoors in at least fine weather. However; use in bright sunshine is impossible. Under the sale of goods act this phone appears to be not fit for purpose. I bought my phone from Tesco. Tesco's Mobile Phone Help Centre have advised that as more than 28 days have elasped since purchase they can do nothing.

Love this phone :) i got it for my birthday a few months ago. I will admit that it does have a downside, and that is it doesn't have very much room for ringtones etc you have to delete text massages every day or two or you dont have enough space to recieve new ones. other than that its awesome (sadly no camera or MP3 but hey thats not what phones are for. OH and it gets MEdia Net which is pretty awesome plus IM, e-mail, and text messaging. 4 stars !

Its literally indestructible, gets signal everywhere and has a loud speaker. Sure the screen sucks, but just put your hand over the top to create some shade on the screen and viola!

The main problem, obviously other than the screen not working outside, is my sound stops working all the time. Overall, if you need a second phone for emergencies and don't want all the fancy pants gadgetry then this is most definitely the phone for you!

This nokia 2610 is a real problem. (1) the display is not readable. (2) the manual ia absolutely incomplete. (3) there is no manner to know what your display is telling you at a given time (the manual thing again), (4) it is impossible to customize for a simple, clear, easy operation. I was fan of NOKIA's phones because they where reliable. The 2610 is NOT. Most users seek a phone, not because it is sleek, but because it works. This NOKIA 2610 definitely does not work.

I wanted something cheap and cheerful, mainly for occasional texting and emergency use. I spent an hour with the manuals trying some very basic functions and didn't have much luck. This could be because I'm thick, but now I suspect that one has to allow a few seconds for the machine to respond to one's key strokes - or, as I now read below, because the Select key needs careful operation. There have been times when I think the machine has "frozen". I've now succeeded with most of the basic functions, but still haven't got to grips with the phone. And I haven't tried it outside yet...

This phone is pretty basic and probably will do for calls and texting but I cannot understand why it does not log the time of text messages sent and received as a matter of course. Why do we have to access the settings for this? Surely everyone wants to know what time they send a message and receive a reply?

This is one of the worst objects I have ever owned. Seems the main menu button is defective or not sensitive enough. I spend several minutes attempting to unlock it by hitting the menu and * keys. Many of the menus seem to lead to dead-ends where you can't get out of them. The screen resolution is too poor to be color, the icons are unreadable, make no sense, and are just plain silly. All anyone wants with a basic phone is to make phone calls and send text messages, not internet access or instant messaging. If I wanted that I buy an iPhone. Many times it would get stuck in a screen saying "opening application", to what??? I just want to make a phone call! One nasty habit it has if it rings and you don't get to the call soon enough, but hit the answer button, it starts it's garbage of attempting to connect to the internet and locks up! I did look for the screen timeout settings and couldn't find them, they may be there, but the default is like 15 seconds the screen goes to black. Outside it looks like the damn thing is dead. Ugh! A phone in this class with the given screen resolution should be mono with clear TEXT menus. I swear I almost have thrown this thing on the ground and stomped on it and I've only had it a month. Guess I shouldn't expect much from a $15 phone from Target for AT&T. I do think most of my frustrations are probably due to the center menu button being defective. Otherwise I can't imagine anyone selling a product this poor. Oh yeah, I have messed with the contrast settings, it does not improve the screen.

This phone really isn't half bad. I mean, yeah, it's basic. But why buy it if you aren't looking for the basic features? Sure it isn't good as some of Nokia's other models. But hey - at least it's a phone and it makes calls, right? Personally, I've come to like this phone for a few different reasons. One - the keys are VERY easy to use and the menus are easy to navigate unlike the more complicated models. Two - If you've got AT&T, you can call other AT&T usuers for FREE and it only costs a dollar a day for the Pay As You Go only when you use your phone. Pretty sweet huh? Plus, this thing was relatively cheap. I got mine for only 20 bucks. I would suggest buying it =)

This is the worst phone we have ever owned. Contrary to what person xcsd from UK says, it is simply NOT possible to improve the screen legibility by selecting a different theme. The themes vary from barely legible in dim light to completely illegible in any light. We bought it as a cheap pay-as-you go phone to use in France so we did not want any bells and whistles, but had we known how bad it was we would have spent a bit more to get one with at least a decent screen.

Adjust to lower contrast and th ephone looks fine. And if you then go back to menu an dselect Themes, you can choose a niver background and get rid of all those little dots...The problem seems to be that phone companies assume we all know how to do this (ie that we're all 14 year olds with nothing better to do than play with mobiles etc) so they don't provide very clear instructions

Well, just to let that person know, the contrast setting does not make a difference to being able to see it outdoors. I've found shielding the sun or any light from it works well, but obviously it's an extra hassle we could do without! It's seeming to be a reliable phone without too many features, which suits me. In order for a "basic phone" to score more than one star, in my book, it needs to have "basic features." While I do not have a complete list of what these features should be, I can list two features that the Nokia 2610 does not have. All phones should have some method of storing a pause in the dialing sequence. I should be able to store a phone number in the following way: Number-pause-extension. When I tell my phone to dial this number, it dials everything up to the pause, and then waits for me to press a button before it continues. This allows the phone at the other end to ring, and an automated attendant (AA) to answer the phone and say "Please dial your party's extension." Then, I press the button, and the phone continues dialing. I consider this a basic feature for any phone that stores numbers in a "phonebook." I cannot find a way to do this with the 2610. There should be a way to get numbers into the phone other than typing them in. I consider this another basic feature for any phone with an interanal phonebook. Whether syncing to a computerized organizer, or transferring the numbers from a previous phone, there should be a way to "import" numbers to the 2610. I understand that this is supposed to be an entry-level phone, and that the CA-45 connector is for "authorized maintenence personnel only," or whatever it says in the manual, but I have another phone that can import/export its addresses/numbers as text messages. The text message is sent in VCARD (a cellphone standard) format, so the receiving phone can store the information in its phone book. Sadly, the 2610 cannot recognize a VCARD text message, and there is no way to save it as contact information. If someone from Nokia is reading this, please note that these features could be added through FIRMWARE changes. It does not take special hardware to pause in the middle of dialing, or to make your text inbox recognize/store contact information. Simply reprogram the existing phone hardware, and it could do these things. It would cost very little to do this. My review of this phone would gain a few stars with a simple firmware upgrade.

I work for AT&T and we get these phones for work. I'm outside 95% of the time and need to find a tree or something just to have a chance of seeing the screen. Definitely a poor design!

I have to laugh at everyone knocking this phone so low because the screen can't be seen? DUH! The review said so. Look at the phone in the store before you buy it. Truth is, the phone is customizable for what you should need and it works as a phone. Isn't that what you buy a phone for??? The phone works for what you are buying. If you want glamor, spent a little more than %70.00 RETAIL! Texting is easy, phone can be customized easily and you can send and receive calls. The reception is good too. Good phone if you don't need junk on your phone....

I read this review prior to selecting the 2610, thinking "How bad can the display be?" Well, I shoul dhave listened. It is not *virtually* impossible to read outdoors, it *is* impossible. Also, it has a stripped-down Nokia feature set for phone settings. I traded "up" from a Nokia 3120 and am thinking of going back to it, even though it is a three-year-old phone. Stay far away from this.

This is no doubt, the worst cell phone that I have ever been given. I am outdoors during most of my work day, and the phone is totally useless. The designer of this phone should be fired !! I am an engineer myself so I know a little about what should work under normal conditions. I think Nokia should replace this phone for free with at least a 2310 model.

Excellent reception indoors; but the screen is horrible when outdoors. Simple and basic; small keypad for person with average sized fingers. Functional use. Overall: Average

For calls and messaging, it's inexpensive and looks great. Durable "hard rubber" casing has a good feel. No superfluous features. Does the job.

I received regular comments from people on this phone. 'Is that a new phone?' was the most common. Yes, it is a stylish phone and it looks expensive. The main contributor to this is the fact that the screen looks to be twice its actual size when it is not lit. This gives it the appearance of some of the more recent 3G phones. But the 'new phone' comment was prompted, more likely, by the fact that this phone is much slower to show wear than others tend to. This is its biggest plus in my book. Other pro points are awarded for programmable short cuts and a comfortable-to-hold casing with rubber trim. Gripes include a tendency for the phone to crash in the middle of a phone call. This happened to me once or twice a month. The keypad buttons are a little on the small side for me (I have quite slim fingers for a man) and would better suit a smaller hand. Nevertheless, mis-pressed keys were still fairly rare events. In addition to the coin flip mentioned in other feature lists, I also had an extremely addictive tetris-like game with really annoying music. It also had a budget planner which would have been much more useful if the phone had a method of synching with a computer. If you have noticed me speaking in the past tense, then that is because I drowned the phone in a swimming pool. I would easily have stuck with it for another year. That would make a full two years of service. This is an excellent phone for its category. It has good, if basic, functions and is packed into quite a durable and very stylish shell.

Nice looking phone, good size and weight, but the screen is terrible, it's impossible to see outside in almost any lighting conditions. Bought it as a temporary replacement for my Samsung D900 today, but may be taking it back tomorrow for a refund due to the rubbishness of the screen.

I've had this phone for the past year and think that its great! Its small so easily fits into a small purse when clubbing. Its also very light weight. The back light going off after a few seconds is a bit annoying and its quite hard to see the screen whilst outside but for a simple and low cost phone, these minor things are acceptable. The battery lasts ages, even when it is used lots. I love it!

I agree with this review. The plastic over the screen is tinted dark and mirrored -- impossible to see outside or in the car. Otherwise, the phone works fine and is exactly what I need and want. But I am going to have to replace it after only two months due to the terrible, terrible screen.

This pone sucks. I got it from my company because they were out of the Samsungs. Only good thing it's a free phone for me. Other than that, it just plain sucks. Display is too weak to see even in a normally lit room, and impossible to see outside. Maybe it was designed for vampires, but for normal folks, forget it.

Nokia 2610 It's a cool phone; the battery last longer than others phones; IT'S THE WAP! (Web-internet designed)But FYI, What you need is Oxygen Phone Manager II; or, The LogoManager.co.Uk, and then your phone will do anything, and it will be unique; The Data Cable is the CA-45(FBUS); but it`s not available everywhere, so you should try in the U.K. Good luck to evryone.
