Nokia 2600 review

 Review: September 2004

Last updated November 2007

Rating: 2 stars

In a nutshell: Available in the UK from September 2004, the Nokia 2600 is another "back to basics" phone from Nokia: no camera, no radio, a basic colour screen and, mercifully, a conventional keypad layout!

Review

The 2600 is not rich in features, but is a nicely styled phone that fits in your pocket and is easy to use. The integrated handsfree speaker is a nice touch.

For some reason, Nokia have decided to incorporate a spreadsheet function into the 2600. On a screen with just 128 x 128 pixels, this is an interesting decision!

I was given a Nokia 2600 because they were going to throw it away, my question is: will it still work in Australia with the new systems and technology in place nowadays??

Reply by S21 from UK on 19th Jun 2016
Hi Rob, as long as the battery is still holding charge, you should have no problems, although apparently Telstra plans to switch off the 900Hz frequency by the end of 2016. But since the 2600 is a dual band phone, even this shouldn't be an issue. Optus & Vodafone will continue to support both 900Hz and 1800Hz frequencies.

Can't fault it, best phone you could buy. No gimmicks, no useless features to drain the battery, which still lasts for weeks, even after 5 years of use, providing you only charge it and fully charge it - 3 hours, when the warning of a low battery sounds. If you just want to use it as a phone and send texts it can't be faulted even the camera works very well for sending photos to your e-mail address where you can store them on your PC. Its very light weight and compact so it easily sits in the coat pocket or car door pocket. Not much point buying anything else if you want a phone.

Shame I can't download tones, mp3s, pimp it out. But surprisingly sturdy: it's flown out of my pocket while dancing in kindergarten class many times; I put it back together, and it still works. This thing's the Uzi of cell phones: basic, rugged, sturdy, does the job fine.

I have had this phone for more than 4 years now, and it's still going. It's a very basic phone, and almost out dated I guess. It's not the greatest for calling people, but texting is pretty good. I have dropped this phone so many times, and I'm surprised it's still working. It's quite durable, and good for people who just want a phone, and not a portable computer that does everything except make your breakfast in the morning. It's got a long life, but the battery life of mine is very, very poor. Usually I have to charge it every second day! But it's very simple, long lasting phone.

Overall, very durable, worth every dollar and a mostly reliable phone apart from a few glitches such as restarting itself sometimes and not responding to commands but nothing is perfect=)

I think that this phone fit's perfectly what it is intended to do, I mean I can see a lot of comments saying that it is a big dud because it doesn't have a lot of feautures, now that's thinking to rational cause this phone was made for simplicity functions which is making calls and sending or recieving SMS's. I already have a Treo 680 for business and work purposes and an N93 for music and video use, so why did I bought a phone like this? It's because it simply provides functions that I need on a phone it's lightweight and calling and texting features are so easy not to mention it can survive heavy punishment especially for men on the go like me

Good coverage almost anywhere. Being very cheap and basic, it's certainly value for money. The only thing irritating about this phone is that, unlike even older versions monoclored phone from nokia, u acn't download or in other way add ringtones to it. I 'm talking about the looks and design of course, regarding the performance it does exactly what it 's supposed to do. This is a basic phone and does its job well; one cannot expect 16M colours on a cheap phone. This makes you crave for a more expensive model or you can reason yourself out of the idea by being more LOGICAL monded and rational and look at the positive side of things etc... All said I conclude that the first impression this chubby phone makes is rather a vision that disappears after a while and it show its, I m sorry to say, its not very attractive figure. Reading through the various reviews, I understand each persons perspective or experiences with the phone. What most owners aren't aware of is the praise and glorious accolades the phone has received. Ben Hammond has been quoted as saying "A technical marvel, who thought in todays age you could pick up this work of art in and call someone to order a pizza via speakerphone?". Paul Richards was quoted as saying: "This phone should go down in history as one of the seven wonders of the world, I wonder who actually spent time designing this and thought a spreadsheet would be great?" Look lets be realistic, the phone maybe ugly to some people, the phone doesn't have a camera to take photos that could be submitted to National Geographic magazine, the phone doesn't have high quality polyphonic ringtones so that you can pretend to be a mobile D.J. It's designed to do the simplest of tasks.

Nope, I use a Nokia 9500 on the job, and after work, I like to relax. Which means, I dont care for a camera, because I have a digital camcorder. I dont want MMS, (I have email for that) and this phone doesnt weigh in around 200+grams like my 9500 does! It fits easily into my front shirt pocket, the sound quality is great! Not to mention its stylistic design! So for someone wanting a very easy to use phone, and doesnt want/need/maybe has a better phone as a main phone, then this is for you. It is the responsibility of Nokia that they should add some nice ringtones to it to overcome this problem, but they really failed in that. Available ringtones are boring and irritating. Anyway it is a nice cell in town.

There seems to be an awful lot of people out there criticising this phone for lack of features. If you are dumb enough to buy something before finding out what it can do, then you're an idiot! Back to the phone, I'm delighted with it. Its small, lightweight, cheap, and does what is says 'on the tin'. The ringtone and message volumes can be set to loud, and I mean ear pearcingly loud - particularly the msg notification, which is great if you are in a noisy bar or the phone is buried in a deep jacket pocket.

Im not impressed with the software although it is a average phone , it plays polophonic ringtones but you cant download them .... not good! Spend a few more bucks and get a phone that supports gprs and mms

Is that a cell phone..? No downloads, poor pixel, with in a min you feel that your hands are becoming hotter and hotter,no need to purchase a separate electric rod for boiling water, just put the cell into water after 1 min of call......Hell is made because of this cell.

People who complain about it's lack of features are stupid and irritating. That's what you research a fone for. A fone that doesn't have the features you want is not a bad fone, but merely not the fone you should have chosen. For what it's intended - a simple, back to basics fone - it is good and looks stylish.

It's a nice cell for economy class.Colour&sound features are very beautiful.Very handy and good to use. But can any one tell me, since I've bought it, it gets restart suddenly. Is that any option that might be enabled for which it is occuring or that is a software or hardware problem? Good luck for all the Nokia Users.

For all those people who have given this phone only one or two stars for not being fully downloadable, mms, and gprs(or something!) these are things you need to check BEFORE you buy the phone... duh! For anyone who wants a mobile phone to use primarily as a phone and to text - like me - then this phone is great. Really easy to use, great colour screen, and some great games too!! I would definitely recommend this phone as a good buy. p.s. - virgin are selling the phone for 59.99, and this also includes 30 free airtime at the moment.
