Nokia 1600 review

 Review: February 2006

Last updated February 2008

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: The Nokia 1600 is an entry-level phone. It looks smart with its chrome detailing and compact size. Its very lightweight too.

Best buy: Nokia 1600 from Amazon Marketplace UK (£35.00)

The keypad is reasonably easy to use, despite the numbers being split into two sections, and there's a nice 4-way scroll key. The user interface is graphical, simple to use, and makes good use of the small colour display.

A good first phone, or a phone for someone wanting just the basics, the Nokia 1600 has a similar spec to the Nokia 1110. The 1600 has the benefit of a colour screen, but lacks the changeable covers of the 1110. Battery life is excellent, but storage for phone numbers and SMS messages is limited. The phone has MP3 ringtones, but don't expect too much from these!

The 1600 has now been replaced by the Nokia 1650, which has a larger screen, plus a built-in torch and FM radio.

Nokia 1600 features include:

  • Display: 65,536 colours, 96 x 68 pixels
  • Simplified menu and navigation
  • 20-voice polyphonic ringtones with MP3 grade sound
  • Integrated handsfree speaker
  • Messaging: SMS, picture messaging, instant messaging
  • Wallpaper, themes and animated screensavers
  • Icon-based phone book (200 entries)
  • Speaking alarm/clock
  • 3 games
  • Memory: up to 60 text messages
  • Dual band
  • Size: 104 x 45 x 17 mm
  • Weight: 80g
  • Talktime: 4 - 5 hours
  • Battery standby: 285 - 450 hours

I got this phone since my father bought it for me last December 2005 and up 'til now, this phone is working perfectly fine. I love the way this phone is designed and how its features work! You can also set up a keyguard code to it, so you can protect your phone from others. For short, this phone is conveniently perfect, but please do not expect too much to its performance. Nokia 1600 is just a simple smart phone built to suit your convenience and a lot of texting and calling needs!

You can't go wrong with a Nokia 1600 if you just want a compact, reliable phone for making and receiving calls and texts. Ther are no whistles and bells like camera's and MP3 players, but if thats what you're after then you won't be reading this review. It is the abscense of gadgetry that makes the reliability of this phone bomb-proof and if like me, you switch it off at the end of each working day, you should expect a full week between charges and depending on useage, i have had up to 2 weeks before re-charging was needed. As phones go, if communication is your principle concern ahead of gadgets, the 1600 simply cannot be beaten.

Ive had this phone for years now and it's case is getting a little worn out. It's not an easy phone to get as Nokia seem to have stopped selling it but I am going to find a shop that sells it and buy 3 to last me. The case may be worn out but I am a builder and this phone has been dropped, kicked, it's got wet, been thrown and spent hours in pockets with sharp or abrasive objects, it has also had loads of dust in it but it still works perfectly. Amazingly robust phone. The screen is its only weak point (mine is broken but that's what happens when you hit it with a drumstick). Overall easy to use phone that dos what a phone should, powerfully robust and easy to use. Perfect work phone, or good for kids.

Only the memory is sooo limited... but is very resistant... i had it for 5 years... and is still working flawless.. and the batery lasts and lasts. I would say that, if we agree that a phone is a machine to make phone calls and nothing else... this could be the best phone ever.!

I had this for about 2-3 years from now, and i might say it served its purpose of being a handy dandy call/text phone. I've spiled paint a lot of liquids on it and it still runs. What I don't like about this phone is that it kills sim cards, I think I change my sim card for about 2 times already and it freezes and just auto restarts from time to time. If you're running low on cash, not a technophile and is not good with handling with small objects; definatlry this one is for you!

As someone not really interested in phones I bought my 1600 just because it was good value basically. However I have since come to quite like it and have been impressed by it! I like how it is just a phone, none of these silly features. I don't want to take pictures, listen to music or connect to the Internet. This Nokia fits the definition of phone - to make and receive calls. That's what I want it to do, and it does it brilliantly. The reception quality is always good, the battery lasts ages, and it's lightweight and looks good. Also it could not be simpler to use, no need to trawl through the instructions ever, just play about with it, go through the various menus and everything will make itself clear to you. Just one slight annoyance though, which is that the battery indicator doesn't always seem that accurate, however this should take nothing away from what is a great phone and great value. When other people are spending silly amounts of money on daft expensive phones, keep your head, buy a 1600. 5 STARS ~~~ QUALITY!!!!

I get great reception with this phone, and it has awesome battery life. I lost it during a blizzard once and it sat in the snow for a week. An honest man found it after a week, and answered the phone when I called, and kindly returned it. It had been on the whole time in freezing temperatures and still had a quite a bit of power left. I've also dropped it a few times on concrete. With the exception of a minor scratch, it has held up perfectly. For the cost and it's dependability I think it's a great value. In the basic phone category, it's outstanding.

I got my Nokia 1600 through 7 eleven , with their phone card system . Im in quite a remote location in regards to cell reception , and the Nokia 1600 still gets out , and I can make , and recieve calls inside the house , unlike the LG 6190 that I have also . The other thing that I like with the Nokia 1600 is the excellent battery life , with moderate use I was able to get 5 days on a charge . This is also better than the 1 to 2 day max with the LG 6190 . I also like that you can check your voice mail by holding 1 . That is a great feature . For the price I am really impressed with how well the 1600 works . There are a few disadvantages that I will be glad to live with . One is the display is hard to see without the backlight on . The other , is there is no date on the display with the clock . I would highly recommend the Nokia 1600 .

I like this phone for simplicity and loooong battery life. This phone, however, has one HUGE problem: as you know when any phone is locked you still can dial the 911 number or 112 (international phone emergency). In this phone for some reason you can also dial 08 when keys are locked and this by dialing this number you'll get to 911! "0" and "8" are located so closely that can be dialed at any time in you pocket. My phone already dialed 08 twice. Beware of this phone - this can get you in some nasty troubles. When I called manufacturer and told them about such problem they hanged up on me twice! This major problem is what really makes this phone a horrible product.

Bad points: Can't see screen on stand-by, ring tones are always ascending, ring tone volume not nearly loud enough, can't set ring tone duration without call divert, address book icons are too big to use (they push address details off the screen).

It's a value for money phone only if you learn to live with it's many flaws and bugs: 1. The call menu shows only a list of the last dialed numbers which is pretty useless. All my earlier phones (Panasonic, LG) used to provide a consolidated list of dialed, received and missed calls in reverse chronological order. On this junk of a handset, calling back a missed call number would require you to press at least 2 buttons and 5 clicks 2. The last sent SMS always comes back on the screen while sending a new one 3. This one really takes the cake : the phone at times can't recognize a number that's stored in the phonebook!! If you store a local contact without the country code (which is what most people do) and if the calls from that person come with the country code prefixed, the phone can't identify the caller! Howz that? 4. Once my phone rejected the SIM card without any notice or any reason whatsoever. It started working after a day when I happened to switch SIMs and reinsert the old one back. And no, this wasn't a case of water getting in the handset 5. You call this a 65K display? It looks more like a 256 colour one. Nokia should see some of the LG handsets to know what a real 65K display looks like. 6. I have to switch the phone off an on to get back the menu at times - otherwise the menu option simply disappears.

Firstly, it astounds me the amount of idiots that review on here. A lot of people review phones when they have either never had it, or never used it. Secondly, there are people who have rated this phone as 1 star, because they bought it and then suddenly realised that its a basic phone. Do you people not bother to look at what you're buying before you hand your money over? Now on to the phone. I have the black version. Its actually a very nice looking phone, and very sturdy to boot. I decided that I just wasn't going to waste my money buying a phone with a million features that I never use. I don't browse the net on one (who would on PAYG?), I don't use the mp3 player (whenever I'm out, I don't have time to listen to music. When I am indoors, I have a computer that stores half a terabyte of music thanks very much), I don't use the camera (I have a real 8mp camera, I don't need a rubbish phone camera so that I can take lots of of useless pictures for some nonsense website like bebo). I also don't want some fragile phone that I'm paranoid to take out with me, where the letters and numbers rub off and the screen starts to flake. I also don't play any games on phones either, simply because there just isn't any good ones, and once again, if there was, I wouldn't have time to. Its a good size (not too big, not too small), the keypad is comfortable. Its solidly built, and has a loud alarm which I need for the mornings. The battery lasts 2 weeks on a full charge also. I reckon it'll last me 4-5 years. I decided to buy it out of Orange, not only because it was the cheapest price, but with Orange, if you spend 10 per month on top ups, you get 300 free texts per month too. That's far more than what I would ever use. Bottom line, if you want a nice looking phone with basic features, thats cheap, reliable, and will last you a long time - this is the phone for you. If you're an idiot that spends 20 on a phone, not bothering to check what features it has, and come home to find it doesn't have a camera, mp3 player or bluetooth, then perhaps you should seek some adult supervision the next time you are going to hand over money for goods.

It makes a good back-up phone for times of need, but it's DEFINITELY not worth $30. I've never had a Nokia phone before. I've always had either UTStarcom or Kyocera. I guess switching to this phone feels like a cheap down-grade....:( but, it's still fun. ;)
