Nokia 1600 Review

Phone rating:

Review: February 2006. Updated February 2008.

The Nokia 1600 is an entry-level phone. It looks smart with its chrome detailing and compact size. Its very lightweight too.

The keypad is reasonably easy to use, despite the numbers being split into two sections, and there's a nice 4-way scroll key. The user interface is graphical, simple to use, and makes good use of the small colour display.

A good first phone, or a phone for someone wanting just the basics, the Nokia 1600 has a similar spec to the Nokia 1110. The 1600 has the benefit of a colour screen, but lacks the changeable covers of the 1110. Battery life is excellent, but storage for phone numbers and SMS messages is limited. The phone has MP3 ringtones, but don't expect too much from these!

The 1600 has now been replaced by the Nokia 1650, which has a larger screen, plus a built-in torch and FM radio.

Features of the Nokia 1600 include:

  • Display: 65,536 colours, 96 x 68 pixels
  • Simplified menu and navigation
  • 20-voice polyphonic ringtones with MP3 grade sound
  • Integrated handsfree speaker
  • Messaging: SMS, picture messaging, instant messaging
  • Wallpaper, themes and animated screensavers
  • Icon-based phone book (200 entries)
  • Speaking alarm/clock
  • 3 games
  • Memory: up to 60 text messages
  • Dual band
  • Size: 104 x 45 x 17 mm
  • Weight: 80g
  • Talktime: 4 - 5 hours
  • Battery standby: 285 - 450 hours

If you buy this phone it will honestly last you all your life-its so reliable and sturdy its like a mohawk bull. The battery lasts forever, charging is very quick compared to my old Motorola razr (wot a pile of poo, by the way), plus don't even mention the highly addictive games such as Rapid Roll! This is a serious problem for me, i can't stop playing it. All in all, if you're looking for a simple, easy to use basic phone that will always back u up in emergencies, buy this its so cheap and wonderful.

The only ploblem is the battery can go down in a couple of days. Not as a fashion item or for important work which may need a phone with bluetooth. This does not have bluetooth by the way. My friend has this one and says its brilliant and its not pricey at all. :)

When I first got the phone I was satisfied. Then my husband bought one also, but he (like all men) wanted one with more features, so he gave it to our daughter and he bought himself a Samsung slide up thing. My daughter's phone is now giving problems. You cannot access the ring tone; it only vibrates no matter what tone you select, then whenever she gets a call, she cannot hear the person on the other end of the line, but she can clearly be heard. Also, it comes off without you having to switch it off, which is really annoying. I'm thinking of throwing hers and mine into the nearest sea and switch from Nokia to Samsung, because my husband is 100% satisfied with his new phone. Can anyone analyze this and maybe come up with a solution? I went thorugh the User's Guide book but it doesn't even recognize a problem like what my daughter is experiencing. I tried switching batteries and SIM cards and and same thing happens.

This phone has no backlight on standby and therefore the screen is very dark - anyone else noticed this. Very disconcerting - otherwise ok, basic phone. But would have thought twice before purchasing if realised no backlight on standby - or am I doing something wrong.

Being an engineer with a modest background in marketing, I think that Nokia designed the 1600 with a specfic target customers in mind. They aimed to satisfy the needs of that target buyers and make them feel good about their phone. I was not in the market for mp3-PDA-camera-whatnot type of mobile phone. All I needed was a simple phone that is utterly reliable in what, I think, a modern mobile phone does best: voice call and text messaging. In this respect, I am very delighted with the Nokia 1600! It's people like me that this phone was made for! Text messaging is fast. Menus are intuitively laid out and zip along when accessed. Managing your contacts and messages are very easy with abundant memory (200 contacts is more than enough for my needs.) Its extra functions are substantial and very useful. For instance, I have configured the alarm and calculator for rapid access. I suspect that since the designers didn't have to be burdened with building heavy features into this phone, like a camera, they instead poured their talents into making the Nokia 1600 as elegant in looks as it is as sharp and fast in functionality to please its target owners. I appreciate this. And I certainly am very pleased with it. The color screen is small but this is not a complaint. If it were any bigger and higher in resolution, it would slow down and drain the battery sooner. Besides, I can clearly see the characters against the nice backlight. The rechargeable battery packs a lot of power as it is already lithium-ion. The phone is small, very light and inconspicuous. It looks so simple yet so elegantly clad, especially the one in black. You have to see and hold it to believe. I love this phone. Just about the only complaint I have is that it keeps the messages I already sent in its memory until I delete them. Oh, well. I guess the 4MB internal memory had to have some work to do, too. Good work on this basic phone Nokia! Thanks for a very affordable, easy to use, fast and great-looking phone.

Why are all these people moaning that it hasn't got bluetooth or an MP player of a coffee maker etc? It doesn't pretend to be anything else than what it is - a good looking, easy to use, basic phone with excellent battery life.. If like me you just want to make calls & send texts then buy it. If you want a camera, mp3, television or washing machine then look elsewhere!

Pros: 1. Have all the features of a basic phone. THE phone for people who want it simple and useful. 2. Speakerphone feature is powerful. 3. Good battery life. Cons: 1. Small screen 2. Doesn’t ring loud enough while in a crowded place , Big probelm. Most of the ringtones aren’t audible enough to be heard the first time if the TV is switched on, a little loud. The ringtone that come with the phone just are not good to be heard repeatedly. 3. One speaker for everything. No separate speaker for the earphone and the call rings. Thus, I doubt the longevity of the speaker. 4. Keypad, especially the navigation keys too small and uncomfortable. Conclusion: Very good phone for its price,: SIMPLE, USEFUL , Economical, COLOUR SCREEN MOBILE. It does its job well no doubt, but it ain’t a perfect package.

I bought this phone last week and was so disappointed with it I ended up trading it in for another phone and losing money - but I'm totally and utterly relieved it's no where near me anymore. If you're used to the usual way of navigating around the screen on a Nokia (as I am), well this is different. The bottom two options on the opening screen (Menu and something else) takes up almost a quarter of the screen! And with usual Nokia's you scroll down, on this one you scroll left to right on the tight screen. I found the screen so small it's hardly worth using (remember, it also has a low resolution). And once you do use it, you'll realise very soon that it's made for children (watch what happens when you try and put a contact name/number in). The buttons are not easy to text on and it's generally a flimsy phone. I respect people who like this phone, but if you're looking to use this otherwise simple device from Nokia for just calling and texting with a screen to easily navigate around, be warned. For a tenner more (here in the UK) you can get the 6030 which is more robust, bigger screen and with the usual Nokia way of navigating around the phone. Hope this helps those who wanted the phone for the reasons I did.

If the specification page says its capable of WAP its wrong, it isn't. If the specification page says it is capable of downloading polyphonic ringtones its wrong - it isn't. If the specifaication page says it is capable of MMS picture messaging, please don't be misled - its is capable of sending / receiving those small, black and white pictures that come preloaded on the phone but nothing else. If you just want a mobile that can make / receive phone calls / texts then its fine, but if you want anything else buy somehting else.

The phone is not a bad one but comparing with the highly technical and stylish phones of today, one may refuse to cope up with Nokia 1600. It is perhaps a colour copy of Nokia 3310 which contains much similar features. Nokia company should have at least made it equal to Nokia 3100 with GPRS and Infrared if possible. It has now been about a year im using it. Its good for simple people who do not show off.

I bought Nokia 1600 last month. Getting to be a month, as what other users commented, this is actually a very good phone and worth the price. One thing about the ringtones, the phone doesn't support download, nevertheless if you are not fancy on changing ringtones, the existing ones are just fine. I am so used to Nokia phone, if you are also a nokia user and would just like to have something basic, this is a good choice to consider.

This phone is very good. Easy to use and if you dont know how to use it, it has demos to show you how to make a phone call etc... The speaking clock is very good in the mornings, you dont need to try and see the phone, i like this feature alot. Only one down side the keys are a little glassy and hard to use. I come from a nokia 3315 to this and its alot better. This is really a top phone.

Outstanting no frills phone. If you want a phone to talk rather than take pictures or play MP3s then perhaps this is the one for you. Good selection of standard loud ringtones, strong vibrate alert, effective speakerphone, compact, looks good, very solid compared with the competition and, best of all, a massive REALISTIC standby time of up to 400+ hours. Buy one now ;)

Had it for almost a week now and it's excellent. I don't want a camera, MP3 player or other toys bolted on, just a compact, well made, easy to use phone for calls and texts. This fits the bill. Screen is small but very good, with good colour and decent size text. I find the keypad easy to use, despite what some have said. Good range of ringtones too. All in all I'd thoroughly recommend it.

No camera, no MP3 player, no fuss. I've had mine nearly a month after getting tired of my ageing Nokia 3510i and I have to say the 1600 is a great phone. It's quite small and light, which is great as I keep it in my trouser pocket, and so far I've only needed to charge it about once a week. The 'Go To' button on the right hand side of the main screen is very handy for shortcuts. One possible drawback is the keypad is quite small and can be a little fiddly for texting to begin with, particularly if you have big hands, but before long you get used to it. However I would definitely recommend the Nokia 1600 if you're after a small, good value, no-nonsense phone for calling and texting.

Excellent - just one problem (unless I've got it wrong), it doesn't record Message Reports - you have to wait and see it flash on the screen.
