NEC e616 Review

Phone rating:

Review: August 2004. Updated June 2006.

The e616 is NEC's replacement for the e606. Like the other NEC 3G phones, the e616 supports the full range of 3's video mobile services - video calling, video messaging and downloading video clips. In addition, it also supports the GPS (Global Positioning System) enhanced features such as directions, maps and traffic reports.

It has a larger screen than any of the previous NEC 3G phones, and benefits from a Bluetooth™ wireless headset connection. Other nice features are the decent internal memory and the option to add additional memory sticks. The phone supports Bluetooth™, but only for connecting to a wireless headset.

The e616 has 2 integrated video cameras - one mounted on the front, the other on the back panel. Strangely, the camera resolution is only CIF format (100,000 pixels) which is poor for a camera phone, although the camera does have a built-in light for taking pictures or videos in low light.

The battery life of the e616 is particularly poor, although the standard battery can be swapped for an extended battery which does improve things somewhat. The phone also has some reliability problems, as you can see from reading the consumer reviews below. Overall this isn't a phone that we recommend, and it certainly doesn't rate as highly as NEC's cheaper e228, even though it has the benefit of GPS and a Bluetooth headset option.

Features of the NEC e616 include:

  • Supports all 3's video mobile services, video calling, video messaging and download video clips
  • Integrated front and back CIF cameras with 2 x digital zoom, built in light and torch
  • Display: 65,000 colours, 240 x 176 pixels
  • MP3 player
  • Voice recorder / Call memo to record conversations
  • Multimedia messaging (send photos, videos and text)
  • Predictive (T9) text input
  • Java games
  • 40-voice polyphonic ringtones
  • Assisted GPS (Global Positioning System) for enhanced location based services
  • Bluetooth™ – wireless connectivity (headset & dial-up networking profile only)
  • Connectivity: USB
  • Organiser features: Calculator, Currency Converter, Scheduler, Notepad, To Do List, Clock, Alarm
  • Internal memory: 19 Mbytes
  • Optional memory card up to 128 Mbytes (Sony MemoryStick Duo™)
  • Synchronisation of data with a PC
  • WAP, GPRS class 8
  • Fast 3G data transmission: 384 kbps download / 64 kbps upload
  • Size: 103 x 53 x 26 mm
  • Weight: 131g
  • Talktime: 1.5 hours
  • Battery standby: 2 days

I have had this phone for four years, and used it in 3 countries with 5 networks. It is the best most adaptable phone I have. I use it exclusively, I 4 other phones which just ly in the office draw I dropped it in snow in Scotland while stealing a few apple at a country house. I returned to same house the following year at the same time to service equipment and while swiping a few more apples, I dropped one and there it was. I took it home opened it and left it on a window ledge for a week recharged the battery and switched it on. I phoned a mate immediately. i only good to say about it. The 3 net work did leave much to be desired but I opened mine myself, it has a selection switch, it lets you choose your network, I used it on pay as you go Virgin in UK, but is South Africa, they have no offices I could find so I use another net work to which I a switched myself. I would like to download a handbook for it as mine is in storage in UK.

very dissapointed by this phone, it says on the packaging bluetooth enabled but soon discovered that this was only for the headset and not for exchanging messages etc. the phone is massive and cuts out from time to time and although the dowloadable music videos are of high quality there is limited choice. i tried everywhere to get this this phone especially due to the drop in price but after buying it i soon realised the reason for such a dramatic price cut, this phone is poor and a very big dissapointment.

I agree that the sales patter for this phone was misleading. I'm still a little confused about billing too. Luckily for me, I live in a good area for 3 services, which I checked before I bought this phone. FOR & AGAINST. FOR: 1. I find it easy to upload & download to or from my PC. You don't have to buy wallpapers, you just have to format them to the right size & file type (210x280 pixels, .jpg works for me), then use the options to set as wallpaper. Sod paying £2.50 ea. 2. Lots of fun stuff to mess about with (including .wav files of which I have 100s of farts, burps & insults etc.). 3a. The camera is a lot of fun, when you get to grips with it. 3b. So is the video capture. 4. Uploading video to the PC is easy. You do need to find the MP4 codec if you want to watch or edit it, but it's there if you look. 5. The storage allows a lot more than I thought. I had envisioned having to buy a 512mb memory stick duo, but there's lots of space, without having to be too selective with my content. 6. You do actually GET 2 batteries! AGAINST: 1. This is the 1st phone I ever owned without games already installed & @ £5 each game that's upped the cost of this phone by £15, as I would expect to have at least 3 games free with the phone. 2.It wasn't clear that you can't surf the web on this phone. Being tied to 3 is a definite con, in all senses of the word. 3. Why is everything so damn expensive? £2.50 for a ringtune is outrageously dear for a 20kb midi file, especially when I already have 10,000 similar files on my PC, which I downloaded for free! 4. I want to top up with £5, £10 or £20 etc. & use it how I like, not how 3 TELLS me to use it. Credit should last until you need it too, not just 30 days! This wasn't fully explained to me by the salesman at Carphone Warehouse. 5. The battery life is poor, even considering the extra functions. OVERALL 3 stars. I think the phone is great & gets 5 stars from me. The 3 services get 1 star. OUTLOOK. I'm waiting for new firmware, or unlocking to another network, but keeping the phone for now.

What ever you do, do not buy this phone. It is the worst phone in the world. The menu is tricky, time consuming and inconsistent. The battery is as about as reliable as a chocolate teapot. If you want to download the pictures you took onto your PC, forget about, its very tricky. And forget about calling 3G support. If your problem is too tricky, they'll just ask you if they can put you on hold, and then they will cut you off. And if you phone back and ask to speak to the person who was handling your problem, they will just deny that that person ever existed. I like to think I am good with gadgets, and I like a bit of a challenge, but this phone is the worst phone in the world. The people at NEC who designed this phone should seriously find another job. Please, do yourself a favour; do not buy anything from NEC. It;s not worth the nightmares.

I bought this phone. it looked promising. It was on sale for £35 including £15 credit, which was excellent considering that the phone has a £200 value. But I'm so glad that I never paid £200 for it. I've owned a Nokia 3210, 3300, Siemens A50 and SonyE T610, and the NEC e616 has to be the worst phone I've purchased. First of all the handset is very bulky with the larger battery, second the firmware and features of the phone are rubbish. Third, 3's services are unreliable. I live in the centre of London, but when I'm at home I still don't get 3G coverage. WTF? When I first bought the phone, it refused to make any calls. I contacted 3 Customer Support, but was finally put through to India! Struggling to tell the woman at the other end my phone number. Also, for some reason text messages don't always arrive at the destination, even when you get a report back saying 'Delivered Successfully', and trying to read emails is a pain. Avoid this phone. Please...

i got this fone a few weeks ago and im allreadyt sick off it. It's a decent fone, good features and stuff but there is allot wrong. The Gprs is junk!! - u can only go on the 3 site and everything ther costs a fortune. The bluetooth is rubbish - it cannot conect to other fones most of the time but even wen it does u can send/recieve files. U can't use mp3 ringtones and midi files can only be under 20kb. You can only use games from the 3 site as wen u upload any from the computer u cannot install them. I wouldnt recomend this fone if u want advanced features!!

In a nutshell: Deceptive sales practices, lacklustre support and unreliable network coverage. In detail: Cleverly, the sales staff at 3 forget to show you the phone with the suitcase-sized battery that is required to run this phone for any longer than a day. Instead they show you the phone with the super-slim and sexy battery and mention that there are two extra batteries included. Great! ... but the only really useful battery adds about 30% to the thickness of the handset. Customer service is tragic, and the phone has had to go back for software upgrades as it was losing SMS messages, creating phantom SMSs and generally stuffing up. Calling between 3 phones often suffers from dropouts - even within the city centre where coverage should be great. 3's area coverage is woeful and you are "Roaming" more often than you are in 3's coverage area. Even within the coverage area you can go for days without getting 3 coverage. While experienceing drop outs and non-connections between 3 phones I am able to grab my friends Vodafone handset and call a 3 phone with crystal clarity. You cannot even download games, instead you have to pay per use or for unlimited use every three days. That's just a cynical money-grab by 3. Very unhappy with this unreliable network, unreliable phone and the deceptive sales practices used by 3 staff.

I've just purchased a e616v on 3Pay in preference to a Motorola A835 which I'd had on contract with 3-truly AWFUL. Having owned it for three whole days what do I think? Well the phone is angular and clumsy in the hand, the display is poor and the interface is awkward.Good points, the battery life is great, reception and sound quality are very good and I've got a give-away tarriff. Not perfect... But hey.... What do I expect for £44.95 inc £15 of airtime? I'm going to load it with £40 credit each month giving me 750 mins call time and 75 text messages... Reception in Wolverhampton has improved so now I'm ok to use it the way 3 have pushed it. A handset with a bit of style to make loads of voice calls offering fantastic value-for-money. Not a phone I would have chosen on a contract but with pre-pay it has to be one of those little bargains. Thanks to 3!

Well, I really don't know what the nay-sayers are on about, judging by their comments that their brains are just not understanding what is going on.. probably because they've just used their phones so much, the radiation is seeping in. 3, unlike other networks are still building their network, there are parts of the country where coverage is poor - THIS makes the signal unreliable and the calls can be dropped and/or certain 3G services are not available. In York for example, coverage in the city centre is ok but if you are moving down certain streets while talking the signal may drop out - nothing to do with the phone, in my house I cannot get 3G services - nothing to do with the phone - my house is on the edge of the coverage area. This will improve as the company expands the network, kiddies and those still in nappies wont remember but the situation was exactly the same with Mercury One2One in London when it started - limited coverage and a clogged network. Ok, the phone. This phone is better than the lower 228 IMHO, I had one and took it back to get this one, I was stunned to find two batteries, one being a bigger 1800mAh cell and all the goodies to connect to a PC - a CD and USB cable - great stuff - at last the camera has a practical use beyond being a money spinner for the networks, you can transfer photos, video and music etc and it works flawlessly, I've not had any problems with it. As a phone for 29.99 (plus 15 quid for the topup), plus it's features and accessories, it cannot be beaten and is excellent value. The ONLY gripes I have are with the network/service: 1. The top-up included is not a real one, therefore 3 insist it must be applied as voice credit as opposed to text, this is contrary to the impression given on the packaging etc and is something I am pursuing with Trading Standards now. 2. Network coverage is still patchy in many places, I imagin e London is well covered. Here in York it is poor especially on the outskirts. 3. Getting through to 3 customer services can be difficult, sometimes impossible, often emotionally draining, I've tried for days on end without success. 4. Some of the services (Top Shelf) appear a bit questionable especially as a kid can buy the phone - these services should not be available IMHO, seekers of filth should find it elsewhere. I am assuming it's filth anyway, could be wrong, I guess many won't give a damn about the morality aspect anyway nowadays. 5. The price of the top-up is high and the 30 days use period is a joke - it makes an assumption that we're all mobile junkies, lovers of radiation and/or have bottomless pockets. It is EXPENSIVE to run, probably not much different than a contract phone. I'm used to putting a tenner on a phone once every few months. This will cost you 180 quid a year at least. But the phone itself is very good. Check your coverage first. If you're a parent, check the types of services available just in case. Be aware that the problems many have voiced here are network issues and not the phone - oh yeah, it does NOT feel cheap.. ;-)

It seems that the amount of software needed to give you the gimmicks has come at the expense of being able to rely on the phone for what you really want it for - to make phonecalls and text people! Do not buy this phone unless you are happy to put up with it constantly freezing and then only being able to turn it off by pulling the battery out, then having to repeat this process at least 5 times before you can dial again, to receive a message notification but then to have no message in the inbox, even though your friends confirm they sent one to you, to have it tell you there is no memory left when there is plenty, to have it continually turn itself off and then restart itself in the middle of calls, to spend your whole entire plan $ on flagfalls from the number of calls you have to make to have a 5 min conversation with the same person...and then, after having the phone for 6 months, for it to die completely. Then to be treated by 3 like its your problem alone. I appreciate that 3 have opened the way for video calling in aus and created great competition but they need to get serious about acknowledging the probs with the NEC e616 and help their customers instead of telling you its your prob that the phone doesn't work!

I don't really see what all the fuss is about. I bought 3 of these phones today from dixons, £45 each with £15 credit. All 3 phones are in perfect working order. I recently ended my contract with 3 and went back to vodafone, not because of the handsets, just the customer service. Sure, a lot of the features like 3g don't always work properly, but if 3 didn't exist then it would be ages before we would have video phones, because the other networks wouldn't be trying to get back lost customers, and so they wouldn't be offering high quality phones yet, and they would be really expensive. 3 have made it possible to buy a phone for £30 which would cost several hundred on any other network. further more, if you buy the phone on 3 and get it unlocked you can use any sim card, and avoid any network problems. If you think 3 are bad lets see what happens next month when vodafone launch their 3g services. I bet you they have just as much trouble as 3 did. Its new technology, it takes a bit of time. 3 is owned by the same company who set up orange, and they were pants to begin with, but now look at them. I think you should appreaciate that your mobile is costing you less than your landline, and that a lot of the time 0845 numbers and many similar come up as inclusive in your minutes, which you would have to pay for on any other network.

I cannot stress enough to anyone wishing to purchase a mobile to avoid at all costs both the NEC e616 mobile and 3 network. I have never in my entire life felt to utterly helpless, unable to get it through to 3 that the phone just does not work - no network, and when I do get a connection, it cuts me off stating "initializing". The battery life is pants (needs charging twice per day) even though I cannot use the phone. I cannot receive incoming calls anymore - it states that I have messages when in fact there isn't anything in the inbox. I have returned the phone twice, and each time it is returned, there is yet another problem. What can we do to make 3 sit up and realise the customer might just be right?? I can see from all the feedback on the site that there is something very wrong with the handset and coverage. We do not set out to be dishonest in order to get an upgrade every year - all we want is a phone that is reliable, and a customer service that gives a damn! Isn't that we sign for?? I have regretted this purchase ever since and have not experienced the reliablility that i expected from a "so-called" reputable company. It has put me off from buying another NEC product again! Common problems include regular drop-outs in signal, and phone suddenly freezing and becoming inoperable. This is one phone you do not want to rely on in an event of an emergency!
