NEC e313 review

 Review: August 2004

Rating:

In a nutshell: The NEC e313 is available on the 3 network very cheaply and has become one of 3's most popular phones.

It's a good value 3G phone that supports video calling, video messaging and all the other features available on the 3 network.

Other good features of the phone are the exceptionally large colour screen, polyphonic ringtones, voice recorder and MP3 player.

Although marketed as a budget phone, it has a lot of features that you might not expect, such as an expansion slot for additional memory, and even the internal memory is generous at 19 Mbytes. The finish of the phone is nice (better than in our photo here!), and as 3G phones go, this one is slim and relatively lightweight, although at 126g it's heavier than nearly all 2G phones. Overall it's good phone for those wanting to try out what 3G has to offer.

Users in the UK may not be very familiar with NEC as a mobile phone manufacturer, but overseas NEC has years of experience in this arena, especially as a manufacturer of the hi-tech i-mode phones in Japan.

The main issue with this phone, as with all 3G phones is the battery life - expect to charge the phone every couple of days, or daily if you make much use of the video calling feature.

NEC e313 features include:

  • Supports all 3's video mobile services: video calling, video messaging & download video clips
  • Rotating video camera for video calling, recording short videos and taking photos (VGA resolution - 640 x 480 pixels, digital zoom)
  • Display: 65,536 colours, 220 x 176 pixels
  • MP3 player
  • Voice recorder / Call memo to record conversations
  • Multimedia messaging (send photos, videos and text)
  • Predictive (T9) text input
  • e-mail
  • 40-voice polyphonic ringtones
  • Java games
  • Synchronisation of data with a PC
  • Phonebook (500 entries)
  • Organiser features: Calculator, Currency Converter, Scheduler, Notepad, To Do List, Clock, Alarm
  • WAP, GPRS class 8
  • Connectivity: USB
  • Fast 3G data transmission: 384 kbps download / 64 kbps upload
  • Internal memory: 19 Mbytes
  • Optional memory card up to 128 Mbytes (Sony MemoryStick Duo™)
  • Size: 147 x 64 x 21 mm
  • Weight: 126g
  • Talktime: 2 hours
  • Battery standby: 3.5 days

Mr bother has this phone and when i first saw it i was like "that looks like a remote control" In fact pretty much everyone told him that! But it does actually look kind of cool! I mean it's unique, you won't really see anyone carrying a phone like that anymore, people have started to get really tiny phone - the smaller the better but that is not actually true! My brother left the phone and got a new one and today i just found it lying around the house and i was like wow! Everytime i see it i say "wow" just because it is amazing!! I have only seen it on about once or twice because my brother stopped using it and now it wont turn on it is either the battery or something so i really want to get it to work because i will definatley use it!! If you think about it, it is really good value fo money - 45 snd you are getting video camer, internet access, camera, mp3 player etc. I know shops that sell phones for about 35 pounds and sometimes they dont even haev a camera!! I think this phone is a work of art! hahaha i know that sounds silly but serously, this is about the 3rd time i have seen it and gone "wow" i really want to get it to work!! If you like unique things i suggest you buy it but find out more about it first becaus ei know people you didnt like it! Ciao x

Not only do their credit policy on pay as you go suck (30 days to use up their very expensive credit!) and battery life non-existent. also there is no possible way you can buy a replacement charger from them either from their website (Even though customer service told me so..), or any of their well, 2 stores in central London. Useless customer service too, their store in Kensington, the only mobile phone store i have ever seen a bouncer in over here! anyway off to go to another netowkr and back to Nokia. nice knowing you three. Have had this phone for more than a year and can say that this is the single most horrible phone on god's green earth! Battery life is hopeless for one, receiption is horrible (not only because it is on a horrible network but also because of the phone... Have a PhD in Mobile communications and know what I am talking about). There is a software glitch in the phone directory that won't allow you to delete a entire directory. The ergonomics of the phone are horrible the list goes on and on.... the short version: do not touch with a 10 foot barge pole! Save your money and look somewhere else much better 3g phones out there now. Don't make the same mistake I did.

Now it fails all the time, can't receive or send texts (even if you've brought text credit from the horrible service of 3), calls randomly cut out, can't make calls, phone restarts randomly, doesnt charge, the list goes on and on. But, as a plus, (or a negitive?) its on 3! 3 is rubbish. #15 min. topup .. every month they wipe your credit, and you -must- topup once every 3 months or they shut down your sim card. Buy a better phone.

I dont know what you people are whining about, for 45 you gettin credit, an mp3 player, video phone etc. i mean what more do you want? the one thing this phone doesnt have is a radio and thats it. And whats all this about it buringing up and short battery life and switching itself off? mine dont do that. Yeah it warms up when im on a long call but all fones do that. my fones only ever switched itswelf off once when i was messing with it and my battery lasts ages. The more I charge it the longer it lasts. Also i have downloaded full length music videos on it for just 1.50 each. i only know one other person whose fone can do that and its like a 500 phone. i dont think you can set you own voice recordings as your ringtunes but you can download mp3 from wap and if u have the data cable from ur pc and these can be used as ringtunes, this fone is excellent and im well surprised three are letting them go for 45 each. And as for you people who whine about the three ne twork dont forget they have only been around like a year and a half and their pay as u go service just a few months. All networks at one time had validatity times for credit. They've just changed their 15 voucher too so thats awesome. I put on 25 a month and choose the 500 mins and then if i need credit i just buy 5 add everything vouchers so basically you can top up 5 at a time. What more could you ask for?

Well, I'm not sure what most of you are moaning about but feel free to go out and spend the best part of 200 on a Nokia with virtually no features if that makes you feel better but personally I think this is the best 40 (inc 15 credit) I've ever spent. I initially wasn't too fussed about the features as I have an iPod for my music and a PDA for video, contacts etc but after this past week I have found myself using only the e313. Far more features that I ever expected. I myself had a bit of a moan about the whole 30 day validity scheme 3 have put in place but when you think about it, its about the same as a contract phone but without the 12-18 months of having your balls trapped in a vice by any one of the other service providers! Generally, I agree with the whole "you get what you pay for..." sketch but this time I'm inclined to disagree. The e313 is a brilliant little phone with all the same features as the 450 Nokia Communicator (minus the widescreen and qwerty keypad). For the money I can't see how it could be improved at all. Thank you for reading this mini tome, I'm now off to post my cv to 3's advertising department!!

A lot of people are saying its a terrible phone but for 45 its a real bargin. The network 3, is probably one of the biggest cons I've seen. They give NEC a bad name. They say that there calls are 5p per minute but when you top up your automatically given a number of call minutes anyway, which goes to show that the 5p per minute thing is a load of bull s**t. If you want this phone (which is very good) you have to be prepared to spend a lot of money using the network. Great phone, s**tty network.

I have had this phone for just over a week and I think it is a pretty good phone. I dont really understand why people are moaning about the 30 day credit validity period. I actually asked in the shop I bought the phone from before I bought it, if people dont do this that is their problem. Its not like 3 dont advertise the fact is it??!! Anyway, I get a couple of days life from the battery, and I use the phone a lot, so thats not too bad. I mostly bought the phone for the camera function and its much better graphics than the old sony ericsson phone I had. I live in a notoriously bad signal area and have full coverage with 3, so no problems there either. Its got pretty loud ringtones, and that little dancing man is worth the money on its own!! I think the phone is cheap and worth the money you pay for it. I wouldnt pay a fortune for the phone but I didnt, I paid 30 and that to me is value for money. Yoiu get what you pay for in this world!! Overall a good phone, nice functions and cheap to call other networks. 5p a minute, cheaper than all the other networks, but I wouldnt waste the money on texts. If you use your phone a lot to call people on other networks quite a lot, like I do, then the phone is worth the money.

If u buy a 256mb memory stick duo you can download all your music or compress your movie files into the gp format, plus you will also need a data cable and flash reader as well as the software. The video camera again excellent, the photos excellent, but it does seem to chew up a lot of battery power. It does let off a high pitched tone now and again and im told it is switching between gsm and 3 networks i really need to read the manual to get a grip on this phone. Pros: Exceptional features (video phone, Video Capture, Good Quality Camera, Good Mp3 player, Slim slick design, lightweight Cons: Expensive content (although the unlimited 10 vouchers gives full access to everything including Downloading games which pretty is good), Oversized length, Poor battery after high usage (such as video), Having to buy extra software driver at 20 even after splashing out 15 on the Cable, Overall Feature Packed Bargin phone, very much like a contract style deal eg for 25 per month you 100mins talk, unlimited content with 1.50s worth Txt or essentially others options. So if want video calling without the credit check and hassle of being tied down for 12mths with a good phone phone get this !

I am a little bit unhappy with the phone as many people have the same opininons as me which are the topup etc. My main question is: i brought a USB data lead for this phone and i got a cd to load the software too but i have tried to get it to download my pictures and videos onto my PC but it wont recognise the drivers. I have tried to load it on 3 different PC's with different windows: windows 98 SE/windows 95 and windows ME. I was more successful on windows 98 SE but still had problems. I tried ringing up 3 and all they said was how to put the USB lead into my phone and said they couldnt help me because i purchased it from someone else so therefore they couldnt help me. Does anyone else have this problem? If you know how to solve my problem please email me on: roxysutton@hotmail.com Thankyou xxxxxxxxx

Not a bad phone if you just want something cheap and cheerful. Battery life is absolutley pants. No WAP only 3's crappy network. Only 1.50 credit as well which ain't a lot of good as all ringtunes and wallpapers are 2 unless you buy add ons not really much good. Topping up is a bit of a problem as well if you live in a small village or town as half of the shops that 3 say you can top up with haven't even heard of the phone. 3's customer services is also a load of crap as the staff can hardly speak English, I lost count of the ammount of times I had to get them to repeat what they said. So unless you speak Indian I wouldn't bother phoning them. Overall not really very good, only use mine for work as the coverage where I live ain't that good unless I hang out of the bathroom window. Don't bother trying to use outside on a sunny day as you can't see the display. but will be fine if you work down a mine or something lol. Conclussion: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS, BUY A NOKIA AND STAY AWAY FROM 3PAY....

This is probably the worst purchase I have ever made!!!!!! The aftercare service is horrendous, you cannot connect to your PC (the reason I bought the phone in the first place!!!) without buying a disc (for 14.99) that NO-ONE at NEC can tell you the retailer of!!!! NEC repeatedly tell you what you need but DO NOT (and I went through 4 separate people to find this out) know who stocks it, how much it costs, how to get it or where to get it. When I expressed my distaste, I was told that the Software disc I needed to operate my 313 phone had nothing to do with NEC!!!!!! But (read this paragraph again in a continuous loop and you'll get some idea of what I went through on the phone with them.) The retail outlet have no discs and weren't willing to try and locate one until I threatened to return the phone (citing Consensus ad Idem or failure to disclose all material facts pertaining to a contract) at which point they gave me a NEC 616 cd - which didn't work!!!! I got the ever welcome customer service call a month after buying it and with the option of having my comments passed on - still haven't had a word back, despite being told I would be contacted........ I gave up at that point. They are horrendous and you would be very foolish to purchase this phone unless you wanted an additional remote control for your telly.

I was very disappointed to see that the video clips only last for a mere 10 seconds, and then '3' steal your credit but I am quite pleased with the phone, especially as it was only 45.00. I suppose you couldn't expect a great amount out of it. I am also very angry about the 'WAP enabled' part, when clearly, all you can do is visit the '3' places which are quite frankly terrible. I am also a bit miffed about the USB cable, which I'm told, you can purchase from Superdrug for 10.00. Apart from that, the quality is great, the sound is superb and the look is stunning. **Do you know where I can get cheap ringtones for this phone?** Thanks (bevvi1@hotmail.com)

The Threepay network doesn't deserve the rotten comments I have heard okay there are problems connecting to the topup line and the three services but all in all I don't get much better service with the Vodafone Live service. First of all, as everyone says the phone is pretty amazing for the price! You get good quality videos and photos and all the fetures u would expect in a mobile phone. The main focus obviously is the video calls which are AMAZING, chatting to your friends in real time is great! !!BUT!! What good is this great phone with such a poor quality service! First of all the video calling cost 50p a minute! What a rip off! Secondly the way ThreePay works is totally confusing an not fair on our customers! To begin with you got to buy at least #15 credit (which u have to use within 30 days), you cant even spend it on whatever you please, You get the option of ALL CALLING or a certain amount of txts and certain amount of calls - on top of that you have to buy an ADD ON (which u can only buy if you have the credit already), If you want video calls u need to buy a #5 credit just for that and txts, If you wanna download music videos or internet files you need to buy a #10 credit just for that - The whole thing is just a rip off and over complicated, Why cant we buy #10 credit and use it as we please? Secondly the manual is POOR! The leave out allot of things! There isnt even an MP3 player as it states, even if there is its not written in the manuel and i cant figure it out! My only thought is that u have to buy extras! Overal its a good phone, But really not worth the purchase due to the expensive, poor quality service!

NEC e313 3G Video Phone. First impressions, this phone is light ! and compared to my old Nokia 6110e, its only one centimeter longer, that is due to the camera part. The display is fantastic, very bright with vibrant colours :) The cameras photo quality is best I have ever seen, better than the Trio 600! As is the video quality, truly outstanding! Ringtunes are loud enough and the vibrate is certainly strong enough to get your attention. To navigate around the handset took me a full day to get uses to it properley, it can be quite difficult to begin with, but you soon pick it up :) Battery life if GOOD ! And people who say it isnt are people who are playing with the phone too much ;) At the moment I am sending and receiving free emails (weird) My ex bought a Samsung black slam shell camera phone for 250, this is ten times better ! Oh and you must try the video calling, its very cool feature :) I bought my phone from Argos for 45 and it came with 15 of free talktime (100 mins). All in all, a awesome phone, and I cant stop laughin at how cheap it is, I would have paid over 200 for this easy,.. NEC, your mad for lettin this gem go for so little cash, 10/10 BUY ONE ! :)

Doesnt really deserve 1 star, but no 0 star option. Where do i start? Its totally locked to the Three network, which is unreliable, low coverage, poor quality etc. This WAP/GPRS phone does NOT let you surf the internet, you can ONLY visit three's own sites, nowhere else (so google is out of the question) This JAVA phone does not let you download your own java applets or non 3 applets, you can only install what you purchase from 3....... This phone has a low battery life, used both supplied batteries on the first day! Nice display indoors, TOTALLY unusable outdoors, cant see a thing on it when outside. 19mb of memory, BUT limited to 100 pictures? weird... Cant play sound files over 20k in size - mad..... Keeps crashing / resetting / dying for no reason at random times. Any credit not used in 30 days goes straight into the Three Networks greedy money grabbing thieving hands. A total con, and I am disgusted a company can rip people of like this, its completely misleading / false advertising.
