Motorola V80 review

 Review: October 2004

Last updated November 2007

Rating: 1 star

In a nutshell: Fashion phone with unique rotating design.

Review

The Motorola V80 is a great idea, badly executed. It has an original design and a great specification, but unfortunately is dogged by a range of problems, and is one of the most unreliable phones in recent times.

When closed, the phone cover hides the keypad to reveal an exceptionally large colour screen and lights that pulse to the rhythm of MP3 ringtones! Push the cover gently to the side and the power-assisted rotating mechanism smoothly opens the phone to reveal the keypad inside. It's a cool design that, like the slide-up phones made by Siemens and Samsung enable a large screen to fit within a compact phone design.

The screen on the V80 is very good. It's a bright TFT display with 65,000 colours and is very large at 176 x 200 pixels, making full use of the opportunity that the rotating design offers. The integrated camera is also high quality, and there are plenty of tools and options to play with. Light condition settings consist of: Auto, Sunny, Cloudy, Indoor and Night. There's an auto timer and a choice of landscape or portrait mode. The digital zoom goes up to 4x, but image quality degrades when zoomed this much. There's no video camera, but video playback (with sound) is possible.

Another nice feature of the V80 is the situational lighting effects, such as the pulsing external lights that flash in time to ringtones and music. The lights are placed around the edge of the phone, as well as backlighting the keypad. Lighting and audio effects can be configured for different phone events, such as opening the phone. The effect is quite striking. Other good features include MP3 ringtones for the most realistic sounds possible, Bluetooth™ wireless connectivity, and the integrated handsfree speakerphone.

One negative point is that the keypad is not the easiest to use. The buttons are small and spaced quite widely apart, making it fiddly to use. The V80 is also dogged by a range of reliability problems and manufacturing faults. If you can find one that works perfectly, you'll have an outstanding and individual mobile, but otherwise you may end up like our unhappy reviewers below.

Just a point of advice, if anybody wants a phone that will make people complement them, buy a Samsung D500. Even 18 months after it came out, the Samsung D500 is still a fasionable phone. If you don't fancy a D500, then a Nokia 6230i should earn you the same level of praise, but the Samsung D500 has that edge. Don't buy this as it sounds a rubbush phone

That is me at the end of my contract and what can I say except I am really happy. I thought it looked like a great phone and the comments I've been getting have been great. The problem is the phone is not reliable. I had the phone 3 days when it stopped working. I sent it back and got a replacement but it hasn't been very reliable either. Don't get me wrong, when it works it is good but for me that hasn't happened much. The texts/phone freeze, the phone switches itself off, it sends random messages to people - when its been in my bag! I have been trying to return this one but haven't been having much luck with my service provider. If I had the choice I would have got rid of it long ago. During most of my time with this phone I've had to carry my old phone with me everywhere as well incase the V80 phone decides it doesn't want to work! To me that is not acceptable. If you are looking for the trendy phone that gets you the amazing comments it's the phone for you. However if you are after a phone that you can rely on GET ANOTHER ONE!

You have probably read alot of reviews about the motorola v80 but please read this 1. I have had my motorola v80 for a year now and it has been nothing but trouble. It is very fashionable. I luv it when i open itand my friends go WOW! COOL! But Hald a yearago i had to take it back to Carphone Warehouse beacause it wouldn't charge properly and when i finished playing ' hungry fish ' it wold switch off and swithback on again and say no service. It still does that even though it was supposed to be sorted. I am not laming carphone warehouse but the phone shouldn't be doing that after just half a year!! Now after a year it is not keeping its charge, switching on and off after i play ' hungry fish AND not wanting to charge properly. Unfortunetly i am not allowed a new phone so i am stuck with this 1 !!!!! I wish i had never wasted my money on the phone. I will neverbuy another motorola EVER!!!!! I bought 2 of these phones. 1 for myself and the other for my wife about 18 months ago. I have to say what great phones they have been. Never had any problems with them and have served us well. Even though we have now upgraded to different handsets which again are motorola we have still kept the 2 V80 as we love them and don't want to part with them. Yes i agree with some of the reviews that you can get better spec phones for your money but who else really makes such lovely looking phones as Motorola. So the V80 are both still with us and yes we still use them. More of a spare phone now really but such a great phone they are still both used on a regular basis.

I have had nothing but trouble from this phone which i bought from the 02 website. I have had to have it repaired three times. The first time the screen just went blank and the second time all the audio went, the third time it was the mic so although you could hear people you rang they couldn't hear you! I live 25 miles from an 02 shop and although I got it online they insisted each time that i took it to the shop for repair. Eventually after contacting trading standards I found out that they have to give me a long lasting effective repair without 'undue inconvenience'. A 50 mile round trip each time to drop it off and collect it was very inconvenient! When I mentioned trading standards they sent me a different phone! Avoid at all costs. It looks nice but that's about all!

We swapped phones for a week I gave my friend my Motorola T720i which is a fantastic and trustworthy phone (I dont' know why everyone thinks it is terrible) and he gave me his Motorola V80. FOR A WHOLE WEEK!!!! IT IS ONE OF THE BEST PHONES IN THE WORLD!!! It has a fantastic colour screen, an amazing digital camera... there are countless features. I love the way it twists to close, providing you with two full size screens!!!! When you close it you have a full size photo or picture and it is exactly the same when opened. In other words, double screens. I couldn't stop using the phone that week. Every time you open it, you discover something new. It looks extremely stylish when you hold it in your hands too. The thing that would have made it perfect is if it was a 3G phone. WHY HAVE YOU DONE THIS TO ME MOTOROLA?? YOU NEARLY MADE A PERFECT PHONE (except for the Motorola E1000 of course)!!!! Anyways, have no doubts about buying this phone. It will be like Christmas early! Thanks for taking the time to read this, Nabz. Any more queries about this phone? Hit me with your question. The Motorola V80 won me over with its cool design and fascinating opening mechanism. I am a big fan of the flip phone and thought this phone and i would get on well. It has numerous functions, most of which i have not used because the manual doesn't explain clearly what they are or how they work. The ringtones are various, ranging from a normal rings which i prefer to polyphonic music and vibrate alerts and even flashing disco lights if thats you thing. On the downside however, i did not like the joystick button. it was difficult to control sometimes and tended to pick menus i didn't want; it tended to freeze everytime i wanted to access my voicemails; and it didn't always alert me when i had a message or a missed call. I also didn't like my main screen being so exposed, unlike a normal flip phone. I will be buying a proper flip phone in the future.

I purchased my V80 in December 2004,The list of faults include, the menu's could not be accessed on several occasions, I would turn the phone off then back on and all would work OK. I couldn't set the alarm clock wouthout restarting it. I found the reception very poor compared to some of the phones my coleuges used. The small joystick cover started to tear away (and I do not abuse my phones. the photographs taken by this phone can only be described as pathetic. the reason I purchased this phone to start with was I need bluetooth. I ended selling the phone on e-bay when it was about 2 months old, just to get rid of it!. I'd co back to two tin cans with a taught piece of string between other than buy another Motorola V80. Severly disappointed considering motorola have made some of the best phones I've ever owned.

The flashing lights and mp3 ringtones this phone can utilise are fantastic. It certainly sticks out from the rest. The speaker on the phone is very loud and clear. There are many things about this phone that makes it a cool phone to have. The space on the phone however, is rubbish. The camera is rubbish, it will not take photos unless you are in a very well lit area. The reliability and battery life are rubbish, this phone can be a real let down. If you're lucky, this phone is very good - otherwise, there are major faults in the design and it is likely to break. As i have been lucky, my rating for this phone is ***.

i think this is a great little phone. its individual it looks good and has a cool little gimmick. these people who broke there phones after two months were obviously a little heavy handed with there phones, ive had it for 5 months and mine hasnt mucked up once. the only downside i can see for this phone is that it doesnt have video capture capabilities and its only got 5mb of memory. of course it comes with the same risks as any flip phone or slide phone (the cables getting damaged in the mechanism) but these phones have been tested against this kind of thing and they only break if u r one of thes people who fidget and continually flip the phone when u arent using it. also one way to avoid it opening in your bag or pocket is to get a neck strap or a leather case for it. these will also stop the damage to the screen, which is inevitable anyway considering it is on the out side of the phone (much like many non flip phones). in conclusion this is a great phone if treated properly . if u want a phone that u can throw around then get a nokia. ive had 3 and theyve never mucked up (my dad dropped his 5110 in a fishing lake and it still worked afterwards).

Now i have a broken joystick which comes off whenever i take it out of my pocket. The sound when i talk to someone on the phone is also very loud. People around me can hear what the people im talking to are saying which is very bad when your sister is right next to you listening to your conversation. Also the shiny cover leaves fingerprint marks and things. Also since i put my face on the screen it also gets al smeared but then again this happend to all the phones. I think that you should get this phone if you are careful with your phone because the joystick comes off easily. Overall i really enjoy this phone.

To the people who've been complaining about the fact that they send replys to messages without meaning to because it unocks when you receive them - you can put a lock on the messages easily, so all it does is ask for an unlock code instead of replying! or get an 02 genie sim cards - 300 texts free every time you top up a tenner, it doesn't matter if you waste one or two! People have been saying that the spinning motion doesnt work properly, thats a load of rubbish. it works fine, the people saying it are just plain stupid. However, there is one serious design flaw with the motorola V80: the fact that the screen spins means that the data cable feeding the screen, cool lights and ear speaker gets worn out easily and eventually your screen just doesn't turn on. also, the phone freezes continually after a few months of normal use. so you may ignore all the haters on this website, but please don't ignore me. i ignored them and bought this phone last year, and i've regretted it since. it's a nice looker, but thats all it is. you want a nice phone, get the new sony eriksson S700i. its basically the same, but it's got a better camera, it doesn't break, and more features. it may not have the cool lights, but lets face it, you'd prefer a phone that actually did what it's meant to, wouldn't you?

Total cack i must say! The screen often froze and the green joystick hardly ever did what it was meant to... wish i had read these reviews before i ordered it! Im only reviewing this phone as one star because it wont let me put o!! Since getting it i have had it replaced after 8 days because of a faulty button. Then i have had problems with the camera (everything goes blue) and the screen freezes more tha anything. Then the cheap nasty back panels have started to fall off (one of which completes the circuit for the loudspeaker)so hence it didnt ring or let me use hands free. The bluetooth is awful with poor success rates when tranfering. Perhaps the most rediculous thing about the phone is that even the "experts" cant fix the problem. As my handset has been away 3 times (and replaced once) and everytime it comes back with more problems. So now i have a handset with 3 major faults but im scared to send it off for repair as i dont think it will come back to me in one peice. Good idea, but quality is awful (but then it is a Motorola)

Then i took it to get fixed and now, even though it was fixed it still looks broken. Also, the thing i didn't like was the small buttons, man they are just too small for my liking. plus, when you listening to a call, the volume is just too high and i have no idea how to lower it. also. texting, i have no way of of making the predicted text to stay unset, there is no command where i can keep the texting to normal letter button texting. A good phone if you want something interesting and the features it have isn't all that bad.and its small but if you want a stress free phone. don't get this one. stick with a phone where the monitor and keypad is on one level

The only real problems i've found are trying to Call or Txt while the phone is charging (won't let you). And the stupid green knob on the central selection panel which comes off all the time (super glue shoudl fix this). It's true the buttons are a bit small but you soon get used to this and the photo's i get are good quality. All in all i'm happy with the phone.

Got this phone when it came out via upgrade ages ago. I love the design and look of the phone (even after a year or more) but that's it. If you do buy this phone be aware you will definately have problems. They may not happen for a few days or maybe a few weeks but they will come! The most common problem I have is when I open and close the screen. Half the time it goes off and takes a minute or two to reboot. The other 'biggy' is charging. I have never known a phone that is so difficult to charge! If you try and make a call when it's charging, good luck to ya! Sometimes I can't even switch it on if its plugged into a socket. The menu system is poor and awkward. Some features are so well hidden in the depths of the OS that I am still finding them! Importantly the voice/signal and speaker are very good and the screen is up there with the newer phones of today. The bluetooth software is a bit tricky. It does a lot more than you would think but the software doesn't make it obvious. I had it 'toothing' my Ipaq so I could send MP3 ringtones to it and stuff so it's got the connectivity.. in there ... somewhere. It's not the worst phone I have ever had (Mitsubishi has that honour!) but it's one of the buggiest for sure!

Ok, well I have to say when i first bought the phone i loved it. it looked really fresh and the screen quality is amazing. however, ive had so many problems with the handset its unreal. First the screen leaked, so i took it back to carphone warehouse and they put a new screen on it (thank god for insurance or it would have been cheaper to buy a new phone.) Then i had problems with the camera - i either got "busy" messages or the camera wouldnt work at all. I went back to carphone warehouse again and they replaced it (insurance claim number 2). Then the screen started to misbehave and the colours began to fade. I took it back to CW again for phone number 3. Then i had further problems with the camera, the camera would only display pink images and anything you took a photo of was in about 300 shades of pink. Back to carphone warehouse again...they have given me a v620 to replace my v80. Its a shame, i loved the phone and its got loads of nice features but its got so many bugs in the system that i couldnt recommend it to anyone. If you are determined to ignore the majority of the reviews on the site, which ALL say "dont buy this phone" then at the very least make sure you buy insurance to go with it. It should really have only one star but its such an unusual looking phone that it gets bonus points for appearance. nice try motorola, but back to the drawing board im afraid. hopefully the v620 wont cause as many problems...

The phone is good for answering and making calls and all basic use but, u can hardly use when you are driving coz of the rotation. Besides if you remove the chip (sim card) it doesn't store txts so you lose all the txts and unsaved numbers. The games are rubbish, but the animation and sound effects are top of the range, the screen resolution is top class. I bought mine sometime in late 2004 the joy stick fell off but I had no cover so I still use it without, It's very secure as well as you can lock applications such that if you lose teh phone no one can use it except just answer it.

I thought I would write a review to save anyone the bother of buying such a rubbish phone! When I first received the phone I was really pleased with it and the lights gave my phone the nickename, 'The Party Phone' from friends... that was until later on the same day I bought it the green joystick fell off. Seems to happen a lot! So I sent it back the day after receiving it and got a new one sent back. This must have been faulty too as the button seemed to wobble a lot, it made me almost too wary to press it too hard! The swivel function is quite cool but in my opinion it should go 360o I know thats just nitpicking but I can imagine this phone would be easily broken by someone trying to push it back the wrong way. The navi buttons are too thin very difficult to press and the number buttons are very hard to press as they are indented (especially hard of you have nails). Bluetooth connection is horrendous. It just doesn't seem to want to connect to certain handsets/handsfree kits. I think the fact you can only watch videos and not record them is slightly pointless. Photo quality is poor, ringtones are hideous. I've had a similar problem as someone else mentioned where I have sent a text and it has gone through at least 30 times. Another grumble I have is if you manage to press send on a text by accident you can't cancel the send which can be annoying. On one instance my phone managed to swivel open in my pocket and connect to the internet which obviously turned out to be pricey! The games are rubbish so if this bothers you DON'T buy the phone! Writing text messages seems to be a major ball ache with this phone due to the slowness! A few times I have set the alarm and it hasn't gone off. My charger managed to stop working and of course the phone crashes randomly sometimes. I can be in the middle of a call and the screen will just go white. As my phone managed to break again and I got my 2nd V80 all seemed well. Untill it started crashing again. I am very careful with my phone so I can only blame the design of this model that makes it so delicate. As somone mentioned the battery low tone is VERY irritating. It's a very loud annoying noise which goes off almost every minute. Even when it's in my bag people look about to try and work out what the loud beeping noise was. Last but not least my phone has managed to break... AGAIN! This time I can't shut it as the screen doesn't turn around and it completely freezes up. I don't receive calls when it doesn't feel like ringing and the backlight won't switch off. As this is my only phone I am having to keep it open and just make sure I don't close it as if I do I bizaarly have to take out the battery and plug in the charger to switch it back on again. I also had a problem while phoning someone where I couldn't hang up. Did wonders for my phonebill as you can imagine! I'm usually not too bothered about my mobile phone but when you have one as poor as this it is very frustrating. Luckily O2 have agreed to replace it for me for free, and I should think so too!

Some people said the green joystick fell off and some don't. I really don't know who is right or wrong. Lord, help me if I have made the right choice. The graphic screen and the camera are great and clear. But my number one pick for cellular phones are the slide Samsung D500 or Samsung E630 but they are pricy. I didn't think much of this as I use it a lot and it's never turned off. However the problem got progressivly worse, the screen would not rotate, the backlight would not turn on and sometimes the entire phone would not turn on, no to mention the fact that the phone stopped responding every 30 seconds or so meaning I had to remove the battery and start again. The joystick has also lost nearly all it's responsivness meaning that I have to push it harder and harder to get it to do anything. The bluetooth function does not seem to detect any nearby phones. (this was no problem for my friends nokia) I finally got it sent off to be repaired but judging by the other reviews in this column I remain doubtful that it will ever work properly. Motorola should recall this phone and fix the several major errors pointed out by their customers.
