Motorola V620 review

 Review: November 2004

Last updated January 2005

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: A highly-specified phone with video camera, MP3 ringtones and Bluetooth™ wireless connectivity.

Review

Based on the Motorola V600, the Motorola V620 is a very highly-specified phone with an integrated digital video camera, MP3 ringtones and Bluetooth™ wireless connectivity. Quad band lets you roam globally.

The main difference between the V600 and the V620 is the addition of a video recorder and an enhanced internal display with 262,000 colours instead of 65,000.

The V620 has the same styling as the V600 except that it comes in a distinctive black finish and is very slightly larger (and a few grams heavier). It's a great looking phone, although larger than most comparable clamshells. The quality of the display is top-notch and the camera and video recorder perform well. The software glitches that dogged the V600 seem to have been fixed in the V620, however, there are widespread problems in getting the V620's WAP and MMS settings to work. Some of our users have written tips on getting this to work, so read the user reviews below if you are experiencing problems with these settings.

Gutted. Oh, and to diva, if my memory serves me well theres a little button on the side, hold that down and it will record :)

I've had my V620 for around 2 1/2 years. I love the long battery life. My only problem (this could be just because I'm not great with technology!) is the length of time the phone rings before MessageBank kicks in. Is that a phone setup or the carrier?

I absolutely love the V620. I bought it while living in Italy and it is the best phone I have ever had. I am now back in the US but can't seem to get my carrier to help out with this phone because they say it isn't available here as of yet. I cannot download anything or send any pictures, other than that I can't say anything bad concerning this phone.

I've owned this phone for the last 4 years and have found that it still works well. The battery life when not heavily used still lasts 6 days. I currently use a Blue shiny metal fascias with it (as I wasn't keen on the black one). The photos I found were surprisingly very good quality for a oldish mobile when I transferred them to the PC. The WAP works ok and I don't know about picture messaging as my mobile network is not one that supports it. The only slight problem is where you charge it some of the metal connection has rubbed away. I think that is why they don't use this type of connection on new phones. Also my only annoyance is that when looking at you phone book, you have to scroll all the way to the bottom if you have a name you want to contact down there instead of being able to jump to the bottom. So all in all its a phone that stands the test of time well.

I got this phone in 2005 for my birthday, so I know its old. Its probably average for its time, but it is such a bad phone. Like all other motorolas, it constantly crashes and is just general breakable! The camera is appalling and there is enough memory for about 10 pictures taken via camera - about a 1 minute video. For a first mobile phone, its pretty good I suppose. You learn the basics of a mobile. But I wouldn't say to my friends "hey you should get a v620 they're great." I'd hardly recommend motorolas in general.

The mnotorola V620 is a pain. Nothing is instinctive. For example trying to add credit or set an alarm? Takes 20 buton presses and an hour trying to find the things. Do not waste you money unless you like spending hours learning a new phone layout.

Had phone for almost 3 years now. Initially enjoyed the phone, but after sometime I realised it's faults. Pros: -Very Durable. Dropped many times without any harm to the performance of the phone. -Flip phone flips well and continues to do so after many years. -Nice stylish black finish Cons: -Camera is flawed. Cannot take photos in dark places. Cannot take photos in bright areas. -SMS key input is slow. You'll find yourself typing much faster than the letters appear so you'll end up spending a lot of time correcting the typos. -Crashes Frequent when entering photo mode, video mode -Connectivity to computer is poor -Storage is poor -SMS storage capacity is poor -MMS is poor --After 2 years, you must use the speaker phone to communicate because the ear piece in the phone has broken.

THE CHARGING DEVICE IS THE WORST I HAVE EVER SEEN. impossible to make charge. charging nodes just dont want to work. tiny memory and unable to delete default settings which waste alot of memory. after a bit of wear and tear the top of the shell comes loose and no longer recognises when it is closed. i upgraded to a nokia 6111, which is an excellent fone if your not hungry for memory space (23mb), but in saying that, the moto v620 only has 5 mb so i guess no1 can complain.

i bought this phone last year just before going to university and spent quite a bit as i'm on pay as you go! Got it from the carphone warehouse and although some aspects are good it has been a big let down! Firstly i found it impossible to set up MMS and the internet access after being directed from the carphone warehouse to O2 to o2's website and then finally visiting another O2 store i was told that the phone shouldn't have been sold to me as MMS enabled as O2 had alot of trouble with this model and i had little chance of getting it sorted i was less than pleased. The memory is rather pathetic although i have got quite a few pictures on it my main grievance is the fact you can't delete the default pictures already on the phone when purchased, or the tones or videos for that matter these all take up quite alot of memory (especially the videos). The camera is ok but the light settings aren't great and often what appears to be a great picture on screen then goes rather fuzzy and out of focus when taken and displayed, infact all my pictures seem to have a grainy effect on them but only after they've been shot. Also had trouble getting it to charge could take up to 7 or 8 attempts at being plugged in before it would charge properly If you're looking for a new phone i'd advise you that although it is an alright model if you're not fussy about the media bonus' to avoid the market has advanced and there are much better models available!

One thing that isn't as good is that i am used to the left key being enter and the right key being back but it is the oposite on this phone. Ive had this phone since christmas 2004 and i think its fab! It looks wonderful and has a good quality solid feel, quite unlike some of the cheap plasticy models that are on the market at the mintue. I would highly recommend this phone to anyone, its fast, has a good battery life and is easy to use- and if you are stuck , the manual is very readable! The only slight problem Ive had with it is bad quality photos. They look wonderful on screen until you have saved the image, then when you scroll through your photos to see the one you've just taken, the quality is of a considerably lower standard which is quite disappointing... Also i just can't figure out how to create a voice clip and then assign it one of the entries in my phonebook so i can say the name into the phone and it immdeiatly takes me to the appropriate number.... Has anyone else had either of these problems with the phone?? Overall the phone is excellent- the colours are crisp and clear and the sound quality is very good.

Summary of my review (It's quite long!):Problems with WAP easily sorted out, looks great, feels great, good camera, easy to use, I love it!!! I got this phone yesterday and did initially have trouble with the WAP settings but I managed to sort that out with no real problems. I'm on O2 pay as you go, and these are the settings that work for me are (on the O2 setting in the web sessions menu) Name: 02 Homepage: www.google.com Service Type 1: HTTP Gateway IP 1: 193.113.200.195 Port: 8080 Domain 1: (this is left blank) Service Type 2: WAP Gateway IP: 000.000.000.000 Domain 2: (also blank) DNS 1: 000.000.000.000 DNS 2: 000.000.000.000 Timeout: 5 minutes CSD No. 1: (left blank) Username 1: (left blank Password 1:( also blank) Speed (Bps)1: 9600 Line Type 1: ISDN CSD No. 2: (left blank) Username 2: (left blank Password 2:( also blank) Speed (Bps)2: 9600 Line Type 2: ISDN GPRS APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk Username: o2wap Password: password Hope this helps if you're having trouble! Also, you can go onto O2 and they'll send you the settings, though that didn't work for me!!! Now thats sorted, more about the phone itself. I have to say that even though I don't like usually flip phones, this not only looks but also feels amazing. It's very sleek, very sexy and very stylish. I have it in black, and though I was disappointed at first on the site thinking 'blacks a bit boring', this phone is anything but. When you switch it on, you're dazzled by the screen, which is something like 262 000 colours. It shows. The camera is excellent too, I was impressed. When I compared it with my friend's phone (the Motorola V220) there was a noticable difference in quality. It also does videos, these aren't as good but still of a decent quality (if you have problems where it stops shooting after about 5 seconds, go to video setup and change the video length to maximum). Predictive text messaging takes a bit of getting used to but now I am used to it, I think it's great. One thing that does annoy me is that when I want to put x x x at the end of a text, it says y y y unless i change the character! Not sure yet how many messages the phone stores, I currently have 63 on it in total, that includes the outbox, and seeing as my old phone only stored 10 maximum, this is a BIG improvement!! LOVE the flashing lights on the front!! Some people probably think it is unnecessary and childish, but I think it's great!! Battery life is OK, I charged it up last night and it said low battery at about 8pm this evening, but I had been taking lots of photos, sending messages, making calls etc, so it'll last longer when I just leave it until I need to use it! I have thin fingers (!), but I would imagine the keypad would be a bit fiddly for anybody with slightly chubbier hands! I find navigating around the phone menus simple too. My last phone was a nokia 5210 and that was OK, but old and outdated. This is the best phone I have ever had, and I wouldn't change it for the world!!

The easiest way to do this is: Go to www.hellomoto.com Scroll down to your country Click on operator settings (top right of screeen) Click on operator settings once more in the drop down menu then click sign me up (dont worry you dont have to pay its just email address) Insert your email address then click sign me up again Once the screen loads just click on operator settings once more a seperate screen will appear. Then all you have to do is click on what the problem is (e.g mms/internet) it will ask you for your country, network and mobile number then it will txt you the new settings. Sounds complacated but its really not. This was the last option i tried and it was the one that worked for me!!

I think this phone is superb. I have owned at least 40 phones (of numerous makes and models) over the last four years (I am fascinated by them!) The most outstanding feature of the recent Motorola phones is the fact when you assign a ring tone to a member of your phonebook, you also recieve the same tone when you get a text message and that will do it for me everytime, its my first priority!! (Not aware of any other mobile makes that I havent tried has this function) I know that you can assign txt message alert tones on the Samsung phones but the txt alerts for messages are absolutely awful and last about 2 seconds then after the first txt alert comes through then it repeats in the default txt tone (apart from Samsung X450 but too quiet for me and again alert tones are awful and cant be changed!) It is slightly heavier than most but like that it feels solid and well made. Has camera, video capture, vibrate AND ring (important to me!) delivery reports on Vodafone. I had absolutely no probs downloading MMS and Web settings, like other O2 and Tmobile subscribers or of the phone playing up in any manner at all, it works like a dream!! I am just in love with this phone and will always in the future by Motorola (never thought I would see past a nokia, but hate them now, not a patch on the Motos! My next venture is the V635 for extra disc storage for pics and videos!!! Bring bringing out the Motos, the rest wont be bought by me!!!

Have had this phone for 4 weeks - hate it. Only stores about 30 messages. You have to scroll down to get a name from the phone book. New phones let you put in several letters until you get the name you want. Disappointed with the phone memory. The fonts are small and cannot be changed. Don't like the screen. The manual is hard to read. Going back to Nokia - much more user friendly.

Try txting "active" to 2020, then follow the instructions. I tried it a couple of times but it wouldnt send me the settings. If u try a couple of times and it still hasnt worked then try the v600 settings.(this worked for me). Once again just text "active" to 2020 and follow instructions. It does work. Hope this helps.

Please switch the handset off and remove the battery and SIM card (please see your user guide if you are unsure of how to do this). Please clean the copper part of the SIM with a lint free clean cloth - this will remove any static which may have built up on the SIM card. Now replace the SIM card and battery, switch the handset on and try again to connect to WAP over GPRS. If you can connect to WAP services over GPRS, try sending an MMS to a friend. 3. If you are still unable to use the service, please navigate through your phone's menu to the network selection menu. Once done, choose to manually select another network (preferably Vodafone) and wait for an error message to appear on your screen. Repeat the above process but this time selecting the O2 network. Please remember to set the phone back to automatic network selection (or equivalent). Re-attempt to use the MMS service. Please Note: The 'Network Selection' section may vary according to manufacturer and model of handset. Please see you user guide for the correct menu map/instructions. 4. If you are still unable to use the service, please try a 'SIM-Swap'. A 'SIM-Swap' involves trying your SIM card in another O2 compatible phone and trying another O2 SIM card in your phone. In both cases, re-attempt using the MMS service. This exercise helps eliminate the possibility of a hardware fault being the cause of the problem. If you do not have access to another O2 compatible handset or SIM card, please visit your local O2 store where our friendly staff will be happy to help. To find out where your nearest store is located, please call 0800 224477. If, after trying all of the above, you are still experiencing problems, please contact a member of our specially trained Data Support Team on 0906 895 0504 between the hours of 8.30am and 5.30pm, Monday to Friday (calls charged at 50p per min). I bought this phone a few days ago! Now I've managed to sort the MMS settings out, I am pleased to say this phone is the best phone I've ever had. It looks good, feels good and sounds good too. Makes a change having a polyphonic phone, that one can actualy hear ringing while it's in my pocket. Camera is ok, but I only ever use it to add a picture to my contacts. If you want a phone with a camera that takes very very good pics then this phone isn't for you. Although the picture quality is better than most VGA cameras. The menus are very easy to navigate. Writing txts are very easy too. Not keen on Itap, but then again, I've never really used predictive txt. But it appears getting used to the Itap would become second nature after writing a few txts with it. The flashing lights are a novelty and cause exclamations of wow and cool, from the younger folk when they see it. As has been mentioned a lot here. The only down side is, the MMS and Wap settings don't work. If you buy the V620 then you gotta set it up yourself. But it's worth it in the end. If your looking for a good well made mobile with ease of use, then this is the one for you. I would reccomend this phone to anyone. I would have given this 5 stars if I didn't have to mess around setting up Wap & MMS.

They should send these straight to your phone. Once you have saved them go into WebAccess - Web Sessions - Scroll down to O2 then press the menu key (top button with all the lines on). Set as default so that O2 is ticked back in the Web Sessions menu. Click on the menu key again and select edit then change SERVICE TYPE 1 to HTTP and PORT 1 to 8080. Now when you select Browser it should take you straight to the O2 site with no problems. But if youv'e got any sense you'll take this phone back to the shop and ask to change it to a Nokia!

I would have given this phone 4 or 5 stars if it wasn't for a problem that's started to occur. I was unable to send or receive MMS messages. After spending an hour on the phone to Vodafone and several attempts to receive and load the settings, the support guy told me to perform a full RESET of the handset via the menu option. I did this and hey presto, MMS now works! BUT...Bluetooth has now stopped working and some wierd things are happening to the battery display/meter wherby when the main adapter is plugged in its not showing a full charge (only 1 bar) yet when uplugged it show a full charge. I guess the software's got itself in a twist. I tried resetting a couple of more time but to no avail. Has anyone else experienced this?

Myself and two friends bought this phone on Saturday 22nd January 2005, on Virgin PAYG, from The Carphone warehouse. The phone itself is lovely, nice size and weight, with excellent ringtones and picture quality. However, you try to get the GPRS and MMS to work. We spent most of yesterday on the phone to Virgin, who were very un-helpful and basically told us that because they do not do that phone on their website, they couldn't help us. So we spent 3 hours today, in Carphone Warehouse trying to get the problem fixed, with no success. They rang, Virgin, who again were very un-helpful and did not want to know. They rang Motorola, who said that the person who deals with this type of problem wasn't in until tomorrow, so we were stuck. After spending all this time, and having my phone messed with for 3 hours, the camera and video functions do not work, and my wallpapers do not work anymore. Needless to say, they will be going back tomorrow for a full refund. We are all really disappointed. I can't see why they are selling these phones on Virgin and 02, knowing that all these problems are arising. Oh yes, and Richard Branson? sort your staff out, cuz their attitudes are disgraceful.

Great phone, prefer it to my old Nokia 6230. Only choose the moto as its one of the few phones that fully work with my BMW bluetooth car kit. Not had a motorola since my old tacII. Like many other here, I'm having real trouble accessing wap & mms on my o2 pay monthly account. I have tried unsuccesfully the tips listed below. When I try and log on to the internet I get the following message 'Page Cannot Be Displayed.'? Can anyone help me? Matt ebay7mat@yahoo.co.uk

Had the phone for a few days now, 10 times better than my old Samsung D410 which kept breaking down, so was glad when they couldn't repair it and gave me the V620 as a freebie. Nokia has the most easy menu system but the Motorola is all about getting used to it thats all. The quality of the camera is also very good and much simpler to use than other camera phones I have had. Overall I am happy and would suggest this to anybody looking for a new phone, also most people I know now carry the latest Nokia so its nice to be different! At first I did have the same problems as most people here but i then checked out Mike's soloution and hey presto it now connects fine all you need to do is change the settings below on the O2 option in the web sessions list. Change Service Type 1 to HTTP and Port 1 to 8080. One thing before I got it to work by using the above fix I downloaded settings from Motorola website but they didnt work, now I have a setting in my web sessions list with a padlock next to it and I can not delete it any ideas how to get rid of this?
