Motorola V545 Review

Phone rating:

Review: March 2005.

The Motorola V545 is an updated version of the V500 and is in fact nearly identical to the new Motorola V550. The specification of the V545 is the same as the V550 and so all of our review comments for that phone apply here too.

The V545 is a good phone with none of the reliability problems of earlier Motorolas (the V300, V525 and V600 were the worst!) The best features of the V545 are the excellent internal screen, the camera with video capture, MP3 ringtones, speakerphone and quad band. It's downside is the poor memory which means that you can't really store more than a few videos or a couple of MP3 tracks. If you want more you should consider the V620, which has an upgraded screen.

Features of the Motorola V545 include:

  • Internal display: 65k colours, 176 x 220 pixels
  • External display: 96 x 32 pixels (2 lines of text) with blue backlight
  • Digital camera: 640 x 480 pixels (VGA), camera light, 4x digital zoom
  • Video capture, download and playback
  • Voice recorder
  • MP3 ringtones & polyphonic ringtones
  • Event lights
  • Downloadable themes: animated screensavers, wallpapers and ringtones
  • MOTOMIXER™ (Remixable MIDI ringer software)
  • Downloadable Java™ games
  • Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, group SMS, mobile chat, instant messaging, email
  • Predictive text: iTap™
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth™ & cable
  • Voice-activated dialling
  • In-built hands-free speakerphone
  • Picture phonebook: up to 1000 entries
  • Calculator and currency converter, date and clock, datebook with reminder alerts, PIM functionality
  • User-customisable softkey functions, main menu and shortcuts
  • Memory: 5 Mbytes
  • Quad band
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS
  • Size: 89 x 49 x 25 mm
  • Weight: 123g
  • Talktime: up to 7.5 hours
  • Battery standby: up to 240 hours

I am just upgrading from this phone. It was quite a good phone at the time but now it is pretty poor compared to the new phones on the market. I have given it 3 stars because I've never really had any real problems with it for the few years I've had it. Sound quality is pretty good, but camera is rubbish and I swear it's got even worse since I first got it. For a phone, it used to be pretty good, but it doesn't compare to the digital-camera quality photos that phones in the market now have. Basically, it was pretty good phone at the time (although I don't particularly like its looks), but as I said, it doesn't compare to phones in the market today.

The camera is rubbish; a lot of pictures blur once you've saved them and trying to take pictures of yourself is impossible because the mirror is at a funny angle to the camera. Memory is too small to be worthwhile. Texts sometimes don't come through for a week! If ever! It's a bit heavy too, and uncomfortable to put in the pocket of a pair of jeans. That fat aerial has stabbed me numerous times. Also, it beeps and changes the ring settings every time it gets bashed, which is very annoying, and is a complete bastard to charge. When you want to check the battery or make some very simple changes to the settings it takes forever finding where you're meant to go - for example setting an alarm means you have to go through four different menus. I recommend trying anything BUT the v545!

I have had this phone for about 10 months, I paid £150 for it, I know that it has come down a lot in price since, but that was the going rate then. Overall I would say that this a good phone and I have had no problems with it, having read some of the other reviews, I would say that the biggest problem with this phone is the instruction manual which is poor, although it goes into details on some things it doesn't tell you half of the things that this phone can do, it doesn't even tell you how to switch the phone off nor does it mention the motomixer which allows you to mix your own ring tones, there are so many menus and sub menus on this phone that you have to find out a lot of the things it can do by yourself. One reviewer stated that this phone only has 2 ring tones which is nonsense. With regards to the quality of the camera pictures, you can't expect the photos on a camera phone to be as good as those taken with a proper camera, even the best specified camera phones are only 2 million mega pixels, which will only produce adequate pictures, if you want good quality photos then use a real camera. Bluetooth does work in both directions and battery life is good, if as a previous reviewer stated you give the battery a long charge the first time you use it. This phone isn't the best available, but it's far from being the worst, at the price it's being sold at now it represents a bargain compared with what I paid for it.

this phone is great for people that are used to using Motorolas as the layout is cool and easy to use. but the downfall is that the bluetooth is only one where you can recieve things, not send which is quite poor, not a lot of memory on it good mp3 player and cool headsets with it. camera not bad could be better, the images get blured sometimes also the camera only zooms in 4x but still not enough, it is annoying on the sside is your volume button, when it is your pocket and you sit a funny way it just BEEPS at you.

It is one of the first phones to have bluetooth to come out in 2004, and it is very reliable. It is a very good phone on looks and is very ergonomic, the aesthetics are great to touch and the bluetooth is quite good. But my favourite would have to be the videos, they come out do good! Ben...how long does your battery last? (out of interest). Alot of people complain about battery life, are generally the people who charge it initially for a couple hours and then take it off charge. When you buy a phone, the best thing to do before seeing what the phone can do, is to let it charge for a good 12 hours.(Even when it says it's charged!) This will produce a longer lasting battery in the future. My battery lasts days. Yes i use it for texts (daily), calls (daily) JAVA Games, (Ohh too freqeuntly)...but my battery still lasts days. I haven't run it dead, I say i will, but i never do. i get to about 4 or 5 days and then i chicken out. V545 future owners....take note. CHARGE for about 12 hours (and/or overnight if you prefer) to benefit fully from a longer lasting battery.

So dont complain bout the batter life, i'm not! it's a mobile phone, they all have to run out of power sometime! and also, the bluetooth does send files out cuz i've done it myself so whoever said it cant is WRONG!! As for the so called "problems" by some reviewers here. Well i've not had any yet but i'll "cross that bridge if i get to it" and if i do... I gave it four stars as this review site - amongst other places (motorola.com) mentions that it has mp3 capabilities for ring tones, and when I download an mp3, the phone failed to recognise the format. Unless anyone has a link i could try for downloading mp3 ringtones, I'll assume that this phone doesn't say what it does on the tin, but otherwise I'm generally happy. (ws4936@gmail.com)

I've had this for a week and am impressed so far. GPRS for IPAQ quite hard to set up but Orange tech support sorted it out. Good reception, sound quality, screen, ring tones. Could be smaller and lighter. Menus better than older Motorolas but not up to Nokia standards. Allows multi numbers per name, but listed separately in phone book - clumsy. Pictures from camera look good when downloaded to IPAQ.

Absolootly rubbish, the camera quality is terrible, there is hardly any memory at all and the video is rubbish to. The cover peels off really easily and when you save your picture is turns either blurry or into little squares which means you have 2 resize it to make it look good. DONT BUY IT!

This phone is the best one ever! I've owned two Nokias before it and decided to go for a Motorola for a bit of a break. I think it'll be the last phone I buy - really! There's no need for an upgrade unless they do one that's telepathically linked to you or something. ~~Lostoyannaya.

Quality of build poor. Back fell off from day 1. Had to order new one and a leather case so that it would hold together. Now it's to bulky to go into a pocket. Have to remove case to use camera/video. Camera/video capture quality poor. Screen cannot be viewed in sunny weather - have to find shaded area to see what's happening. I could go on but it's boring.

Defintely the best phone I have had. Can't get rid of the pics/wallpapers that come with the phone, which take up memory, but that is the only fault i have with this phone. good buy.

The camera is very poor. Left side out of focus. Image dark. Resolution on best setting rubbish! Phone won't let me save my pictures, although I've deleted the two I took. Irritatingly the memory is occupied by unwanted preloaded pictures which I don't want, but it wont let me erase them! The phone part works, but you'ld expect that wouldn't you.

Had the phone for 2 days, great little phone, combact but still sturdy and doesn't feel like it will break apart in your hands. Only thing I am unsure about is that I have a icon on the screen all the time, 3 small squares top right, now i believe this is GPRS but it is always there, I would like to get rid of it, also I would like to be able to remove the standard videos, movies, tones that come on this phone. Any Ideas ?

i like to change my phone every 6mths, i`ve gotta say this is one of the best phones. I got this after my d500 broke so i exchanged it for this and got some money out of it! this phone has great spec, and u can get it 4 115gbp on the net, well worth the money. the screen is good, and the memory isnt great but far better than nokias etc.... battery life isnt fantastic but farely good compared with my girlfriends v500. the d500 is better but for a extra 150quid the d500 isnt worth that much extra. BUY THE V545

If you want an accurate and honest review...just read the ones with five stars.... The others dont know what they are talking about. BEST PHONE ON THE MARKET. (my husband just bought a really good deal with a T MObile ..and now he's looking at my motorola V545 rather enviously!) And girls...it fits in a small jeans pocket but is not light and flimsy - it is a good weight and lovely shape and feel....I love it - it has personality...like having a cute pet in your pocket!

I got this phone as my own personal upgrade from a Nokia 3310. And its great! Great picture quality, good video quality, massive message capacity, its user friendly and its Very compact (ideal if you wear fancy jeans!). The only thing I didnt like about this phone was that the videos and pictures which came with it when i purchased it take up around 20-25% of your limited memory and they are non-deletable. but otherwise, its a great phone and at a great price (for a phone like this) of around £140-£150. I would definately recommend people to buy it! **** 4 stars!

Submitted by becca from USA on 13th May 2005
look, i just want to say where you ALL CAN SEE that there IS, i repeat THERE IS a way to have multiple numbers or phonebook entries UNDER ONE NAME. PRIMARY CONTACTS. find that in the settings, and then when you're in the phone book, you just hit left or right to see the different numbers. i have 3 different work numbers in my phone, ALL UNDER ONE NAME. it doesn't say my company's name 3 times. only once. this is on all of the v series phones. i am SICK of reading about people complaining about this when it says in the manual how to change it!
