Motorola V545 review

 Review: March 2005

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: A clamshell phone with video camera, MP3 ringtones and Bluetooth.

Review

The Motorola V545 is an updated version of the V500 and is in fact nearly identical to the new Motorola V550. The specification of the V545 is the same as the V550 and so all of our review comments for that phone apply here too.

The V545 is a good phone with none of the reliability problems of earlier Motorolas (the V300, V525 and V600 were the worst!) The best features of the V545 are the excellent internal screen, the camera with video capture, MP3 ringtones, speakerphone and quad band. It's downside is the poor memory which means that you can't really store more than a few videos or a couple of MP3 tracks. If you want more you should consider the V620, which has an upgraded screen.

I've had my V545 for a long time but find that for incoming calls, it only rings once. How can I increase the incoming ring time so that I can reach it before it goes to voicemail?
For a basic phone it's great, I don't need memory or any of the other fancy stuff, not too complicated. Camera is just fine and the screen is clear.
I also have a Samsung Sm3mini that drives me absolutely potty; slightest touch and you lose everything, too may empty screens and far too touchy for me. Stick to Moto every time!

I got my phone second hand via ebay and have no problems with it. It's a great little phone, not heavy as some people seem to think but then my previous one was like a brick. Always have good connections, phone is fine: no blurry photos but then I hold the camera steady. No zoom but on this class of mobile I wouldn't expect it. I wanted a phone to make calls/texts with not to take pictures. It can be modded too: if you don't like the aerial you can buy a smaller replacement from online retailers (search using Google). (You can also buy replacement casings online) I don't know how other people say it turns itself on and off, and switches camera on by itself - mine needs to be open to do that, the side buttons don't do that. Battery life is excellent, it goes several days without needing a recharge but I only make about 10 texts/calls a day and I switch it off at night.

This phone is amazing and I am only upgrading after two and a half years. The only bad thing is that it doesnt always charge, I lost the aerial and the outside screen broke a month in, but apart from that everything else rocks. The camera is very good for a VGA, bluetooth is easy to use if you know how, (try looking it up on the web), videos are also great and it very simple. All you people who gave it one star are obviously crazy. What do you expect the memory and camera to be like? it only came out in 2004 where it had one of the best specifications!

My first proper phone that wasn't black and white to tell you the truth! The photo and video quality isn't fantastic, but furing its first year the texting on it is really easy. Its also quite a nice shape. Nothing spectacular, but a good first phone for the kids :D

It's what I needed, I have had it for nearly two years now and still nothing will go wrong with it (dam it, i need an excuse for a new phone :P ). I'm going to upgrade it soon just because I'm board of having the same phone and need something different! There's nothing wrong with this phone at all for me, it just depends what you are looking for!

Had this phone for quite a while now. Pros - battery life is great, love the rubberised surface (tough and stays looking nice), very hardwearing overall (dropped and only scuffed aerial), easy to text, good speakerphone, easy to use and plenty of extras - 5 different alarms called whatever you wish, lots of tones and able to use different for calls, texts, alarm etc. Cons - sticking out aerial gets in way in pocket and camera not great but only VGA so as expected. Overall great phone. Never had any problems with it at all.

Bought this for a tenner last week to replace my broken D600, and have to say this is a cracking little phone for what I paid. Yeah, there's much better phones on the market now and it's a little dated, but you get what you pay for, or more in my case. I don't know what the complaints about the batteries are all about, mine has been on 3 bars for a week now, not like my knackared D600 which only lasts about 6 hours now :(, it's not the battery either, a problem wit the phone. The only downside is the scratches on the screen, Don't know if anyone else had this problem but the buttons have scratched my screen badly, doesn't affect the viewing but looks a mess. The camera isn't all that bad as long as the lens is clean, but it's a little obsolete with the current 3MPX camera phones about. I am having trouble unlocking it though, as you need a cable to be able to do it. I was never keen on Motos, but this phone has changed my mind despite being a good 3 years old. As o f yet it hasn't restarted or frozen on me. One bad point is the memory; 5MB isn't enough if you're planning on sticking some music on it, Motorola have finally seen the light though and started making phones with decent expandable memory. It's OK for me though, I don't need it for music. I reccomend this phone to all, though there are better 2nd hand phones on the market going for the price you'll pay.

I am just upgrading from this phone. It was quite a good phone at the time but now it is pretty poor compared to the new phones on the market. I have given it 3 stars because I've never really had any real problems with it for the few years I've had it. Sound quality is pretty good, but camera is rubbish and I swear it's got even worse since I first got it. For a phone, it used to be pretty good, but it doesn't compare to the digital-camera quality photos that phones in the market now have. Basically, it was pretty good phone at the time (although I don't particularly like its looks), but as I said, it doesn't compare to phones in the market today.

The camera is rubbish; a lot of pictures blur once you've saved them and trying to take pictures of yourself is impossible because the mirror is at a funny angle to the camera. Memory is too small to be worthwhile. Texts sometimes don't come through for a week! If ever! It's a bit heavy too, and uncomfortable to put in the pocket of a pair of jeans. That fat aerial has stabbed me numerous times. Also, it beeps and changes the ring settings every time it gets bashed, which is very annoying, and is a complete nightmare to charge. When you want to check the battery or make some very simple changes to the settings it takes forever finding where you're meant to go - for example setting an alarm means you have to go through four different menus. I recommend trying anything BUT the v545!

I have had this phone for about 10 months, I paid 150 for it, I know that it has come down a lot in price since, but that was the going rate then. Overall I would say that this a good phone and I have had no problems with it, having read some of the other reviews, I would say that the biggest problem with this phone is the instruction manual which is poor, although it goes into details on some things it doesn't tell you half of the things that this phone can do, it doesn't even tell you how to switch the phone off nor does it mention the motomixer which allows you to mix your own ring tones, there are so many menus and sub menus on this phone that you have to find out a lot of the things it can do by yourself. One reviewer stated that this phone only has 2 ring tones which is nonsense. With regards to the quality of the camera pictures, you can't expect the photos on a camera phone to be as good as those taken with a proper camera, even the best specified camera phones are only 2 million mega pixels, which will only produce adequate pictures, if you want good quality photos then use a real camera. Bluetooth does work in both directions and battery life is good, if as a previous reviewer stated you give the battery a long charge the first time you use it. This phone isn't the best available, but it's far from being the worst, at the price it's being sold at now it represents a bargain compared with what I paid for it.

Ben...how long does your battery last? (out of interest). Alot of people complain about battery life, are generally the people who charge it initially for a couple hours and then take it off charge. When you buy a phone, the best thing to do before seeing what the phone can do, is to let it charge for a good 12 hours.(Even when it says it's charged!) This will produce a longer lasting battery in the future. My battery lasts days. Yes i use it for texts (daily), calls (daily) JAVA Games, (Ohh too freqeuntly)...but my battery still lasts days. I haven't run it dead, I say i will, but i never do. i get to about 4 or 5 days and then i chicken out. V545 future owners....take note. CHARGE for about 12 hours (and/or overnight if you prefer) to benefit fully from a longer lasting battery.

i like this phone. not only does it look nice with the black and silver design, it also provides: a decent camera, bluetooth, mp3 ringtone & playback and a very nice blue backlight. yes, the battery does let it down and so does the memory. So dont complain bout the batter life, i'm not! it's a mobile phone, they all have to run out of power sometime! and also, the bluetooth does send files out cuz i've done it myself so whoever said it cant is WRONG!! As for the so called "problems" by some reviewers here. Well i've not had any yet but i'll "cross that bridge if i get to it" and if i do... I will go back to where i got it from and sort it out (Dixons)...

Excellent Phone! (own two) Only problem was getting the MMS and Wap configured and finally was able to do this through the Cingular Tutorial (T-mobile has their own) it still says Orange world but goes to the Cingular site. A lot of the problems here from not reading the manual.

Exactly what I wanted. I was tired of losing credit on phones that unlocked themselves in my bag, this can't happen with a flip-phone. The Motorola V545 comes with extras such as video and camera that I didn't necessarilly need, but I absolutely love, at a good price too. It's a great colour screen, and the phone itself is attractive, small and feels strong (not light and cheap). Well done Moto!

I've had this phone for about 3 days now, and I am still learning new things. I love experimenting (so the manual doesn't get looked at unless out of desperation), and so far, i'm generally impressed. I gave it four stars as this review site - amongst other places (motorola.com) mentions that it has mp3 capabilities for ring tones, and when I download an mp3, the phone failed to recognise the format. Unless anyone has a link i could try for downloading mp3 ringtones, I'll assume that this phone doesn't say what it does on the tin, but otherwise I'm generally happy. (ws4936@gmail.com)

I cannot recommend this phone to anyone. I have had it only two months and it has gone back three times for repair as the key pad keeps freezing. It is proving to be the most unreliable phone I have ever had and wish I had not bought it.

Bought a V545 a few months ago. It's heavy for a start compared to today's standards. Also, battery life...what a joke, dead after a couple of days and I've replaced it three times! As for the charging...another joke, the connection from charger to phone is flimsy and involved a degree of wiggling to get right. Basically the WORST phone I've ever bought...will be sticking to Nokia in future! And it's not just me, a friend of mine has one and has the same problems!! Just don't bother with one of these, they're junk!

I've had the phone for a week, and am happy with it, I bought mine in Optimus, an operator from Portugal... I have installed it more than 14 games by bluetooth, without any problems. I like very much the detail of the keyboard only to illuminate if will have low ambient light, what it goes saving the battery, by the way, this phone could to have better battery time! The V545 is a great phone in features, but small and very stylish!

Motorola V545 "handy hints"

Submitted by becca from USA on 13th May 2005
look, i just want to say where you ALL CAN SEE that there IS, i repeat THERE IS a way to have multiple numbers or phonebook entries UNDER ONE NAME. PRIMARY CONTACTS. find that in the settings, and then when you're in the phone book, you just hit left or right to see the different numbers. i have 3 different work numbers in my phone, ALL UNDER ONE NAME. it doesn't say my company's name 3 times. only once. this is on all of the v series phones. i am SICK of reading about people complaining about this when it says in the manual how to change it!
