Motorola U9 Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: This cute clamshell phone comes in a choice of pink or purple, and has a curvy rounded shape and soft feel. The beautiful mirror finish conceals an invisible external display that springs into life with custom animated screensavers and touch-sensitive music controls. Complete with a 2 megapixel camera, music player, memory card slot and Bluetooth, this is what every girl needs in her handbag! Beware though that the soft finish scratches easily, and we have deducted marks from our score because of the phone's habit of freezing or switching off.

Review: February 2008. Updated November 2008.

No question about it - the Moto U9 is definitely a girl's phone. It's a cute, curvy clamshell and comes in a choice of two colours: pink or purple. Weighing just 88g and petite in size, it's a phone that's been carefully designed to appeal to the senses. Not only is the shiny metallic finish easy on the eyes, but the soft-touch feel makes it a lovely phone to handle. The external display is very cool. The screen uses a mirror effect that blends with the shiny surface so that's it's invisible when not in use. A range of cool screensavers have been designed to complement the colour schemes of the phone, and give the impression that the whole surface of the phone is alive. Touch-sensitive music controls appear when using the music player. The U9 really is a sensual delight!

The U9 is the baby of the Motorola PEBL, but not only does the U9 look nicer than the PEBL, it's packed with features that the PEBL was missing. The camera on the U9 is 2 megapixels - it may not be the best, but it'll take some quality snaps and video clips in good lighting conditions. There's no camera flash though. The main internal display is a high quality TFT screen with 262,000 colours and a high resolution that can match most top-of-the-range mobiles. The music player can handle all of the common file formats and the Motorola software makes it very easy to transfer music from a computer to the phone using a USB cable (not included). The internal memory of the phone (25 Mbytes) is only enough for 5-6 songs, so you'll probably want to buy a memory card. The U9 can take microSD cards up to 4 Gbytes, which is more than most phones, and is enough to store around 1,000 songs.

The battery life of the phone seems to be pretty long, thanks partly to the energy-saving OLED screen, and you should get up to a week's use, although that depends on how much you listen to music. Connectivity is good, with both USB and Bluetooth available. It's a quadband phone too, so you can use it anywhere in the world.

Initially we were super impressed by the U9. It's a lovely little phone, and is one of the best equipped mobiles in the under-£100 price range. Motorola have saved on the cost by not supplying a memory card, headphones or even a USB cable, so you'll have to buy these yourself. However, over the months since launch, our readers have reported that the phone has a tendency to freeze or switch off. The soft finish is also very easy to scratch, so be sure to take care. Also check out the new Motorola Jewel, which is the same phone but re-styled to look like a huge diamond!

Features of the Motorola U9 include:

  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Video camera (15 frames/second, 176 x 144 pixels) with 4x digital zoom, MPEG4 format
  • Main display: TFT, 262,000 colours, 320 x 240 pixels
  • External display: OLED, 65,000 colours, 128 x 160 pixels
  • Music player (MP3, AAC, AAC+, enhanced AAC+, AMR, WMA formats)
  • MP3 ringtones
  • Handsfree speakerphone
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, email
  • Screensavers & animated wallpaper
  • Picture Caller ID
  • Internet: GPRS, EDGE
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB 2.0
  • Memory: 25 Mbytes user memory plus microSD memory card (up to 4 Gbytes)
  • Quadband
  • Size: 90 x 49 x 16 mm
  • Weight: 88g
  • Talktime: up to 7 hours
  • Battery standby: up to 350 hours

The reasoning behind buying this phone was size. I owned an N95 and an 850i and although packed with features these phones were heavy and brick like. This little beauty does everything I need, which basically talk to my bookies and take low res pics. The only downside is the lack of a radio. Apart from that it's the best phoned I've owned so far.

From reading the comments regarding this phone...there appears to be a fault with the motorola U9 in that the phone freezes. I have had this phone for 3 months and it has frozen on me several times for no reason what so ever. It eventually unfreezes but is not great when you are in the middle of a call or need to phone somebody! Not impressed...and plan to demand a refund not a replacement as it looks like this is a common fault with the mobile. Back to samsung for me!

I got this phone 5 months ago, for the past 3 it has been fine but it has started to turn itsself off when i am in the middle of texting or calling someone. The only way i can make it turn on properly is to take the battery out and put it back in, but i tryed that and it carryed on turning itself on and off repeatedly. Also when it turns on sometimes it says there is no sim card, but there is and i have checked that it is inserted correctly. I dont know why it has started doing this but don't buy this phone, its a waste of money!

I've had my new Moto U9 for over a week. It is a lovely phone, but I am missing my old Samsung to be honest. The keypad in the Moto U9 is not as responsive and tactile as my old phone's, despite being a slightly larger area. The shiny surface which makes it so attractive scratches incredibly easyly (I now have to put a protective plastic cover to avoid scratches, which makes the phone a bit bulkier and not so pretty) and shows fingerprints and dirt immediately. As a phone, it seems good and so far it hasn't froze and seems to work ok while charging. Unfortunately I bought this phone on eBay, and being locked onto O2, it has been pre-set by the network (which is the network I use) and there are a couple of things I cannot change: O2 has stored their services on the 9 speed dial settings, and removed the option to edit them! I contacted the network and they told me there is nothing they can do, so now I am stuck with those useless speed dial settings wich I rarely use. Most dissappointed. I would urge anybody getting a phone with a contract to double check that the network hasn't altered any settings irreversibly. They have also changed some of the displays, but that isn't really that important to me. I still like the phone, but as I said, I miss my old Samsung, not so flashy, but a damm good reliable phone. By the way, those people having problems with the phone freezing, crashing or being too slow, should check the memory status. If the phone is running low on usable memory, it will do those things. You could always try to expand the memory and see if that sorts out the problem.

omg dont buy this fone. i got it in february and took it back after a month as it kept freezing and at one point it frooze for half an hour and wouldnt even turn off! they then sent me a brand new one back and exactly the same thing has happened. when i am texting the words appear delayed and also on predictive text it doesnt save all the words you have used so you are forever typing a new word in! like someone else has pointed out, the clear button is below the send button and often i catch the send button which sends a half finished text. the music playlist is good although it is very slow but it can hold alot of songs on. the appearance of the fone is very nice, its a light weight and a nice shape but the overall problems arent worth buying this fone!!!

I have had this phone since April 2008 and I have hated it since June. It was great to start with and people regularly commented on the display on the front, but I have found the battery life is appalling, the phone keeps turning itself off and then I can't get it back on, the keys are unresponsive and appear to be getting worse and as a previous lady mentioned the delete key is right next to the send key, so I either delete texts I don't want to or send what I'm not ready to! I hate it that much I have contacted my old mobile supplier for the unlock code (which I have to pay for) to my old phone which is a Sony Ericsson W810i. Absolutely NO problems with that phone. My advice? Don't ever buy a Motorola, rubbish.

Overall I like this phone and find the features on it like the video and the camera, (2 megapixel) very good. I have had mine for about 4 months, and haven't had any major problems with it. However, it does depend what you like in a phone and what you use most. As a music phone the sound quality is excellent, but the lock on the external touch keys on my phone does not work - this is a very common problem with this phone. So using it as a proper ipod would be a waste of time for me as whatever the phone brushes up against in your pocket will make the songs jump about all over the place - a bit of a ridiculous design flaw for a music phone! I don't use it as an ipod out and about as I have a decent one for that anyway - I just like playing the music without headphones while sitting down and reading a magazine etc, (headphone annoy me sometimes!)and this phone is pretty good for that as it plays quite loud and has very clear sound. I would say it is fairly user friendly - but my v3 was more so. It could really do with a shortcut to the phonebook and calculator - it has one for alert style, wallpaper,(like you need to change that in a hurry!)alarm, bluetooth, message inbox, music, (there is a special key for this anyway - duh!)and video capture. If you press the green call key it will give you all dialled/received calls etc, but not the phone book. This phone can be slow, and occasionally it freezes - usually when it has just been switched back on again and you try and use the keys before it is 'ready'(!), that can be quite annoying and takes a bit of getting used to. I find if you turn it off and on again and let it wake up for about 30 seconds it solves the problem! I think there are too many features for the phone to handle - probably why there is only one suduko game on it, (downloading games for it didn't work for me either - not compatible, so watch for that) if there were more games on it, it would probably throw it's toys out the pram a lot more! I find texting on this phone a lot easier than my v3, I was always pressing the delete key with my thumb on that one, wiping out the whole text! I have never done that with this phone and find the whole process of texting easier. The camera is great, I know there are better ones out there but they cost a packet, and couple that with a really decent video camera for the money and high quality music playback, I would say this is a nice little phone to 'play' with and not take too seriously. If you want more than a few songs on this phone you have to buy a memory card for it. It can have quite a high capacity for this - as much as 4gb I think, so worth in the end. You don't need a usb however if you have a card reader on you computer - just slot the card in and drag and drop. I can put all my pictures easily on my laptop, I have one as my wallpaper in fact as the quality is not bad for a phone at all. To transfer and play videos on your computer from your phone you need to convert the files to something Windows will play, ( wmw/avi etc - I use AVS video converter, works fine when converted with this and it's a cheap program) but I am sure any will do. Battery power is not bad considering the functions, and it is a lovely phone to look at - like I said it's a great phone to play with, apart from a lack of games. And would suit someone who doesn't want to spend a lot - but wants a lot of good quality features for the money.

THE MAIN THING I HATE ABOUT IT IS THAT YOU CANNOT USE IT WHEN IT IS CHARGING

No! I hate this phone so much! I bought a micro Usb cable to get music on it from my computer which now doesn't work because it says i need a memory card aswell. The front screen scratches so easily - mine is just in my pocket with nothing else e.g. keys etc and it is covered in scratches. You can't use it whilst it's charging and sometimes it looses signal whilst charging too. It's really hard to flick open - I am a girl with longish nails and it really annoys me how you have to get you nail underneath the top screen to open it one-handed (and who opens their phone two-handed?) The only game it has is Soduko (wtf?) Its really slow and sometimes it freezes completely for ages or it won't respond to you pressing the keys. When texting, the delete button is right next to the red cancel all button so often after writing a long text, I push the end call button instead and completely delete the whole message! arrrg I hate it so much - don't buy it!

Got my purple U9 a couple weeks ago, there are good sides and bad sides. The keypad is fairly small, and as all the keys are flat I tend to miss the keys when typing. Looks wise it's great, the floating screen is a nice touch. I haven't had any problems with it freezing, although it is a little slow at times. What did annoy me is that I have to buy the USB and software as it didn't come with the phone. My last phone didn't even have a usb port so I was looking foward to being able to transfer music and piture files from phone to computer, but now I have to wait until I can buy one! Other then that the phone is really nice, not perfect, but I don't think any phone is.

I love this phone too.... Ok I am not technical and this suits me.. I have had no trouble setting up the phone, I downloaded music straight onto the SD card from PC... I love the look, I like girly phones even though I am not considered a girl anymore... I use mine with the Ted Baker blue tooth ear piece and its a greatsound for car use. I also love the hands free dialling.. shame about the US accent.. I think their should be a choice... Have had no freezing problems and no probs with ex key lock... Motorola should have usb available but their are ways around the uploading prob... Also someone mentioned scratching... mine lives in my pocket with keys and hasn't a scratch... Wouldn't any phone scratch though if abused?

I got my new Motorola U9 yesterday and so far think its great! its small, sexy and has all the features you would expect a phone of its price to have ( the 2mp camera is good quality). Although the phone didnt come with a micro USB cable, i managed to put music onto my phone by just inserting the music straight onto a micro-memory card and placing the memory card in my phone - worked a treat. The music sound is really good quality even when on full volume! As it is a motorola, it is also really easy to use and i had no complications setting my phone up or working out how to change anything. I agree with some people, the phone can be a little slow but everythign cant be perfect and a little slowness occasionly doesn't hurt anyone. I would reccomend this phone to anyone It's great!

I also love the other little things about this phone, the fact you can have a different text alert for each person in your phonebook, and the way you can read a text message without even opening the phone. Brilliant phone!!! I am very fussy about my phone ( have had SO many over the last ten years) but this phone is what it says it is. It IS a girly phone and without sounding patronising girls who pay the purchase price for this phone get what they pay for-and a little bit extra thrown in for good measure. Easily personalised, looks great, has bluetooth (which I have used to put music on the phone until can get a usb cable)and a decent camera. If you want bigger and better then expect to pay a bigger price. no complaints and I am a hard person to please when choosing a phone-I research them thoroughly. And the purple is the most gorgeous colour phone i've ever had. (yes the olour of a phone does matter to some people guys-it's the predominant feature for even looking at buying this phone). Buy it and have fun with it...it's intended for that purpose!!!

I also find that I have to switch off the predictive text mode each time but that might just be me! What is dissappointing is that there is no UBB cable or disc supplied with the phone to enbable you to download music. The U9 is marketed as a music phone. According to Motorola you have to buy this seperately. I would have thought they could manage to include it in the £89.99 rrp!
