Motorola L6 Review

Phone rating:

Review: February 2006. Updated June 2006.

At its launch, the Motorola L6 took over from the Motorola RAZR V3 as the thinnest mobile available in the UK (although that has now been surpassed by the Samsung P300). Even slimmer than its big brother, the Motorola SLVR L7, the L6 is just 10.9 mm thick! Like the SLVR, the L6 is a RAZR for people who prefer simple candy-bar shapes. It features a similar chemically-etched metallic keypad to the RAZR, and also uses toughened glass to protect the display. The design of the phone is striking, even before you see just how thin it is. It's also available in pink.

Although the display is rather poor, being STN rather than TFT, the phone does come with a video camera, MP3 ringtones and Bluetooth connectivity. The L6 also has a built-in handsfree speaker and good battery life. What it lacks is an MP3 player and some decent memory.

Features of the Motorola L6 include:

  • VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with 4x digital zoom
  • Video camera
  • Display: STN 65,000 colours, 128 x 160 pixels
  • Handsfree speakerphone
  • MP3 ringtones
  • Messaging: SMS, EMS 5.0, MMS, Instant Messaging
  • Push to Talk
  • Java games
  • Downloadable screensavers, images, animations and sounds
  • Picture caller ID
  • Phone book (500 entries)
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10
  • Web browser
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth®, USB, SyncML
  • Memory: 10 Mbytes
  • Triband
  • Size: 113 x 49 x 10.9 mm
  • Weight: 86g
  • Talktime: up to 250 minutes
  • Battery standby: up to 345 hours

Great phone. I've had it as my only phone for the last 5 years. It's been filled with sand on the beach, dropped into a pond (where it died, then miraculously came back to life the same day) and has fallen out of my pocket and spilled its battery and back panel onto the floor on impact countless times - including a few at fairly high speed onto the road from my push-bike.

It just keeps on going. The only problem I have had with it is that the battery is now more than a little tired, and needs to be charged once a day. I've just ordered another battery from the internet, which cost me about £1.80. I'm interested to see how much longer the phone will last, and how much more accidental abuse it can take before it finally pops it.

It's magic. Thee dunt mek em lark thee used t.

I used to repair mobile phone handsets and remember 2005/2006 when these were new to the market. I've never really been a fan of Motorola phones but the L6 was probably one of their better ones where reliability was concerned. Motorola handsets were always notorious for arriving dead at the workshop, if a non liquid damaged handset wouldn't power on with a known working battery then it was usually a BGA component that had failed requiring a replacement PCB in Warranty repairs or Beyond Economical Repair in other cases. We used to see a fair few L6 returned to us for repair, however i'd say that 95% of the faults and failures were caused by customer damage; ie water or physical damage, shattered screens, damaged casings and PCB damage caused by dropping them.

Really good phone had it for years and it's still here! It has been dropped quite a lot but still works fantasticly and hardly has a scratch. Easy to use, good battery could do with a bit more memory though

I got the L6 in January, and straight away was impressed with it. It's got the features of the more expensive Razor phone, but is cheaper. I had a motorpla phone before I got the L6, so I found it easy to navigate (to those complaining the menus are too complicated- you need to get used to a motorola). I did drop the phone a month ago, went a bit funny for a few days, but has recovered! Nothing wrong with it, although I wouldn't advise dropping it to test that! One slight problem- bluetooth. They don't tell you that to send a file, you gotta go to copy and then look for devices. Remember that guys! I love my phone, and am considering buying the L7 sometime soon, and will compare.

Bought the phone after loosing my sl45i. Nothing special, but a good deal for such a low price. 11MB is enough for about 30min videos (3gp 10fps-128x96) so u can watch your favorite series, and with the unlocked load java apps installing games via usb is just easy. There is a limit of 30 installed apps. The camera has really poor quality, there is no video lengh limit (turn off the MMS video setting). Comparing L6 with other phones such as SE k7xx series is just silly. Remember about the low price, and the fact that this phone is ment just too look great so dont be suprised with its poor specs (i.e the 128x160 display).

I've ony had the phone a couple of days and I like it! My sister has the RAZR and they both do everything that you need, as well as look cool. For those who keep complaining please remember. It's NOT an MP3 player like the more expensive L7, so don't expect it to hold hundreds of MP3's! And also, if you want to take decent photos, go buy a camera. Mobile cameras are only there for quick snaps, not professional photography! It's thin enough to fit in my pocket, and the sound quality on a call is excellent. My last phone cost me £60 and didn't even have bluetooth! If you don't like it, then squeeze extra cash out of your wallet and buy something more expensive!

I just got this today, for £69.99!!! Wow! I paid £89.99 for my old phone which had diabolical performance (Motorola v545) even though it had a better quality screen. To be honest that's my ONLY gripe if I were to be picky...though the screen is clear and in colour, it is a bit blocky. BUT! This thin little thing is great to look at, nice and light and feels great in your hand. The buttons are a nice new development and it does have features that my old phone doesn't such as the high quality mp3 ringtones. I'm impressed that these days you can get such a sleek and new phone for this low price. If you're just looking for a great phone with an ok camera as a bonus, then this is the one for you - excellent performance. (If I was to spend more I'd definitely get the L7 SLVR like my brother has).

However I deeply regret the innocence and ignorance laded negative comments on L6, the folks are incapable of operating L6. I would just like to add my opinion about this phone, I purchased it 1 week ago and right from seeing it on the stand I knew that it was the one I had to have, I must say that it has not let me down to date, very easy to use, good quality and very light. I am even going to change my company phone to this model. Value for money? very much so and it looks great.

I'm very impressed. Camera is not digicam quality, no, but its acceptable quality for a phone, and if I want hi-res photos, I've got a good enough digicam anyway. Video is reasonable, and the MP3 ringtones sound surprisingly good - very nice indeed. The tiny size and good looks are another plus. A few people have reported technical problems - I've had nothing, and there are less reports than on most other phones, so I'd say that those with a problem are in the minority. Overall, for anyone who wants MP3 ringtones, a decent camera and video recording, but doesn't have money to burn, this is an excellent choice - for this price, you're not going to get anything better. Highly recommended.

The design of L6 highly enviable, silver colour gives it a distinct personality altogether. Highly affordable and handy set, mind it, L6 is hellbent on mindblowing performance in the coming years. Motorola should keep up up the goodwork, and support this product with great care, since after sales support will be the key for L6 success saga to continue.

L6 has everything which a man looks for in his mobile these days.My last phone was Sony Ericsson T200, which was ok but, L6 is a king of features in front of all my previous mobiles. I feel proud to be the owner of this masterpiece. Incidently my first phone was a motorola. L6 is a blockbuster and will be a surefire hit across the globe with price, features and design.

Have to say, after reading all of the above comments, this phone might look nice, but it is very bad. The back phone cover warps away from the phone after 2 weeks, i got it replaced and within 2 days it happened to the replacement phone, and i didnt even have it in my pocket! Again, if style is what you're after then this might be the phone for you, but, if you want quality, then DO NOT even look at this phone. The Bluetooth is extremely slow, the camera is average, sony erricson is better!, storage!?, well lets not even start on that. If you want to stand out in a disco then buy this phone, there are loads of lights on it. If you want a phone that is good quality and good performance and a low cost then have a look at the Sony Erricson or Nokia entry phones. Miles better. Keep well away!!!!!

With almost ever feature you dream of having it is the best phone in this price range. If you are wanting to spend below £100 this is the phone for you. I have had phones over £500, and so far even this cheaply prices £90 phone is better. It is the best phone I have ever owned, and probably will be for years too come. I havent got much experience with phones - but I thin the L6 is an outstanding phone. The features seemgood to me for the price (although I'd have liked an L7 the extra dosh for the features didn't seem wroth it). It looks very nice and teh buttons seem fine to me once you get used to them. The side button for the camera and the another programmable side button are both very useful and perhaps the only big problem I have with it is that the camera quality is not amazing, plus the filters are minimal ('bluish','greenish','redish' - all rubbish and no use, then just black and white and antique). I was unsure on features whether to ge tthis phone and when i saw it in store it look quite large face-on. but it fits perfectly in your pocket and looks AMAZING once you turn it on (yes the blue buttons turned me :P) Id advise anyone to buy this, and my friend who also has it seems happy too.

I happen to have 6230i and 6230 and this is way better than the 6230 , about 10 times clearer and so much better looking . The whole idea of these phones is the looks , same as V3 and that only had 5MB of memory and they still cost more than the 6230 on eBay . If you want loads of MP3s to play buy an iPod , take pictures? buy a digi cam . This is a mobile phone incase anyone had not noticed and at 11mm thin cant be beaten

Hello The L6 is a sleek phone, elegant and easy to carry. The length of the phone could be reduced or if it is to be maintained like this, the display could have been bigger. TFT would have been cool. The battery backup is not as good as the other Moto phones. Downloadable applications could have been provided and adding memory card could have been added as the feature as competitors in other brands provide all this at relatively nearer prices. Overall, if you are looking for a sleek phone with good features with the phone and the budget fitting your pocket neatly, L6 is cool

Very Neat phone, it's amazingly slim and light, I can hardly feel it in my pocket. I was easily able to upload a couple of mp3s from my computer using bluetooth, and set them as ringtones. The sound quality of ringtones is fantastic, very clear and loud. Screen quality is pretty good, camera quality on the screen is not so good, however I can transfer pictures I've taken onto my computer using bluetooth and they don't look too bad on a computer screen. Battery life is around 3-4 days with moderate use, better than the V3. Bluetooth I believe is the key to this phone's success, as although it is limited with a VGA camera and only 10Mb memory, it's fully interactive with your PC with no need to buy waste of time USB cables and motorola software. Four stars, as it could do with a little more memory, but for the price the features and design are second to none.

If you want longer videos then buy a phone that can do it. If you want to play mp3's buy a phone that can do that. This phone does everything it says on the tin. Dont buy it for the look and whinge about what it can and can't do later! learn to read.

A very good value for money phone, many features are different from my old nokia but thats more the fact I'm not used to the phone than the phone itself. Look at the phone specs before you buy it, can't expect to get a 3G phone for this price. And bluetooth is a slow technology, you can't make it faster. The screen is fairly good quality for a phone in this price range and the sound quality is the best I've heard.

I bought this phone to replace another motorola that had given me good service.I had tried a few others but not being a teckno and having shovels instead of hands this was by far the best feeling handset with positive action keys that i can press without using a tooth pick. The display is very good, keyboard well lit i dont have to worry about dropping my keys now just switch on the phone.pictures are allright once you set the exposure.Very easy to use slips in my top pocket dont even know its there,to me a phone is for phoning this does it in style.

this phone is poorly built the camera quality is shocking and the amount of memory is rubbish frankly i cant believe the japanese have released something so shoddy i just tapped mine and it went off id rather have my old nokia 5100 back even though it didnt turn off it did its job better than this piece of poo ever could , i would reccomend the motorola pebl it has better features, the only good thing about the l6 is the sound quality its awesome for playing songs loud and clear didnt come with cable so had to buy a bluetooth computer port the bluetooth is so slow i dont understand this phone

I do not understand all the bad reviews on this phone. It has all the features of a decent phone and for the money you will be hard pressed to get anything better. Come on you people, what do you want for seventy quid! I have one more thing to say to those that put this phone down and that's LOOK AT THE SPEC BEFORE YOU MAKE YOUR PURCHASE! If you want a top-notch camera and MP3 player you will have to spend at least four time as much.

Well I've had this phone for a day and I'm in love, was very disappointed to have to replace my old moto (c651) with a cheap seimens as it was stolen, and this more than fulfils my expectations of motorola loveliness. I'm not a phone wiz so cant compare to other phones, but as far as I'm concerned a phone is a phone and this is a great phone. You want to take quality pics? Well thats what a camera is for, 1.3 megapixels is hardly good for a camera nowadays. The camera here suffices for taking pics to personalise your phone. You want a phone with MP3 player? Surely you cant fit all the music you could need onto it, plus the battery is likely to go dead much sooner. And for you clumsy people who are likely to break your phones - get a case!!! It's really that simple. You want it all at once you risk so much more going wrong.

For what i paid for i am very happy! All these people who slate this phone are fools - look at what your buying before you buy it, take the time to read the specs and you'll see that the camera isnt the best one out nor does it have a mp3 player!! if that isnt a problem for you then i would recommend this phone *****. READ THE SPECS BEFORE YOU BUY!! I paid £70 for this phone, and i have until now always said i would never buy a Motorola, but i am certainly impressed!! It does what i want and does it very well!! again - check what your paying for!!!

Nice little with no accessories at all! Looks nice but the screen is tiny! V3i has all the accessories you can think of plus its thinner and has a bigger and higher quality screen. Motorola have made some great phones recently and this is the most basic. ( Eccept for the PEBL which really is a Complete letdown for Motorola) Besides that, it's all going well for them. Carry on with the great phones Moto!

I am surprised by the negative reviews this phone has had... This has been one of the best phones I've had to date. Firstly it's a real eye turner, everyone mentions how nice it looks plus being a lad it fits in your pocket and you don't even know it's there! Considering it's size and how little it cost (£69) it does do a lot, such as bluetooth, camera, video & stores plenty messages & pictures. I'd say this phone is a must for someone who is fashion conscious and talks/texts a lot. Maybe try something else if your after a camera/music phone though.

Very disapointed with this phone. In a matter of 1 week i had to return the phone back to the shop as the bluetooth had 'crashed'. It was replaced with a new handset only for that one to break in the matter of 2 weeks, this time it kept switching itself off at the slightest knock or bump. I think in order to have a stylish thin phone you compromise on the quality of the handset. I have been put off motorola's now and will (if i can help it) never get another one.
