Motorola L6 review

 Review: February 2006

Last updated June 2006

In a nutshell: An ultra-slim "candy bar" style phone with video camera, MP3 ringtones & Bluetooth™.

At its launch, the Motorola L6 took over from the Motorola RAZR V3 as the thinnest mobile available in the UK (although that has now been surpassed by the Samsung P300). Even slimmer than its big brother, the Motorola SLVR L7, the L6 is just 10.9 mm thick! Like the SLVR, the L6 is a RAZR for people who prefer simple candy-bar shapes. It features a similar chemically-etched metallic keypad to the RAZR, and also uses toughened glass to protect the display. The design of the phone is striking, even before you see just how thin it is. It's also available in pink.

Although the display is rather poor, being STN rather than TFT, the phone does come with a video camera, MP3 ringtones and Bluetooth connectivity. The L6 also has a built-in handsfree speaker and good battery life. What it lacks is an MP3 player and some decent memory.

Motorola L6 features include:

  • VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with 4x digital zoom
  • Video camera
  • Display: STN 65,000 colours, 128 x 160 pixels
  • Handsfree speakerphone
  • MP3 ringtones
  • Messaging: SMS, EMS 5.0, MMS, Instant Messaging
  • Push to Talk
  • Java games
  • Downloadable screensavers, images, animations and sounds
  • Picture caller ID
  • Phone book (500 entries)
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10
  • Web browser
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth®, USB, SyncML
  • Memory: 10 Mbytes
  • Triband
  • Size: 113 x 49 x 10.9 mm
  • Weight: 86g
  • Talktime: up to 250 minutes
  • Battery standby: up to 345 hours

Great phone. I've had it as my only phone for the last 5 years. It's been filled with sand on the beach, dropped into a pond (where it died, then miraculously came back to life the same day) and has fallen out of my pocket and spilled its battery and back panel onto the floor on impact countless times - including a few at fairly high speed onto the road from my push-bike.

It just keeps on going. The only problem I have had with it is that the battery is now more than a little tired, and needs to be charged once a day. I've just ordered another battery from the internet, which cost me about £1.80. I'm interested to see how much longer the phone will last, and how much more accidental abuse it can take before it finally pops it.

It's magic. Thee dunt mek em lark thee used t.

I used to repair mobile phone handsets and remember 2005/2006 when these were new to the market. I've never really been a fan of Motorola phones but the L6 was probably one of their better ones where reliability was concerned. Motorola handsets were always notorious for arriving dead at the workshop, if a non liquid damaged handset wouldn't power on with a known working battery then it was usually a BGA component that had failed requiring a replacement PCB in Warranty repairs or Beyond Economical Repair in other cases. We used to see a fair few L6 returned to us for repair, however i'd say that 95% of the faults and failures were caused by customer damage; ie water or physical damage, shattered screens, damaged casings and PCB damage caused by dropping them.

Had this phone for five/six years now, it has never failed me once, original battery still lasts a ages, can check email on it, bluetooth still works fine and interfaces with my car for business, it is also just about unbreakable. I have dropped this to the point where everything came off (i.e the copper ariel even came out, dropped it on to a road while riding a bike at 20mph, and still worked perfectly and lives to fight another day. It has got to the point where I will not give up using this phone until it dies.....

This phone is rubbish. The memory is rubbish. The texting is rubbish. Sometimes it won't send the text, & I will receive the text really late. Once I got an MMS & it took like an hour to download. So if you like to text alot, DO NOT GET THIS PHONE. The predictive text is horrible too. Now I will say it is loud.I was in my living room & heard I got a text. So I will give it an extra star for that being that alot of phones, especially older ones arent that loud. But yeah I think this phone only barely deserves 2 stars.

I presently own this phone and Have had it for about three years now. The battery life sucks! I charge it every other day and the only quality time I spend with my phone is when it rings. I hate the fact that I can only store up to three full length songs on this phone. The camera is decent but thats all it'll ever be. The bluetooth works but not as well as other phones. It takes a while to find other bluetooth devices. The interface is fairly simple, nothing complicated at all. I used to play True Crime NY and a Scooby Doo game on my phone (before I got tired of charging so often). So its very good with flash games.

I bought this phone for £20 from carphone warehouse. It has a camera that takes ok pictures and it has lots of ringtones and message tones and you can change the wallpaper and colours. There are lots of options in all the menu's. The sound is loud enough to hear and the reception quality is excellent. This is one of the best phones i've had for hearing a conversation clearly. It has all the basics too like alarm clock and calender. For the price this is a fantastic phone with many features of a more expensive type. The only negatives are, it does feel a little bit cheap in the hand but it is ultra slim and you don't even notice you are carrying it. The only other problem i've had is trying to transfer data between the phone and PC. Other than that, this phone is definitely worth a look and I highly reccomend it.

The bad points- bad memory, no mp3, rubbish camera, browser never worked so ignore that point on features, and i don't know if its just my phone but the bluetooth would not pick up anything and you have to highlight it all and tis complicated to send files. Good points- thin, easy to navigate, good colours, cheap. Ok well I loved it when i got it but within a few days I realist its kinda rubbish. Fine for a business man but not the one for teens to pick..

I love the L6! I have considered upgrading but can't find a better phone! The features I love are ease of use. Motorola's i-tap is the best texting on a mobile phone. It's got all the functions you need. The camera and video are basic but adequate. Games are good and easily downloadable. I've got Pictionary and Dakar Rally on mine! The dislay is large and clear. The sound quality is great both in the earpiece and speaker. Bluetooth and Triband are useful. The best thing is the size. This phone is so thin and fits in a pocket easily. It has no mp3 player - but why do you want one in a phone? I'd rather have a separate one.

I am just about to upgrade my 'phone as I am at the end of an 18 month contract. I'm kinda sad to see it go. It's robust; goodness knows how many times I've dropped it, it looks great and it's very thin! The battery life has been fantastic - though I must say that I don't tend to leave battery draining functions like Bluetooth permanently switched on. If you want a phone with a good camera, stay well clear of the L6 - it isn't very good and the memory capacity is pitiful. It's appearance doesn't date, either. This phone is reliable and value for money. I won't be packing mine away just yet - I'll keep it in reserve in case my new handset lets me down!

It would be better if it was higher than 10MB shared memory cos I like downloading games, videos, sounds and pictures onto my phone. Also the camera quality is rubbish - it's VGA(0.3/0.5 megapixels). Although this phone is pleasing to the eye, it is NOT durable atall. I have had this phone for a little over a year. For the first month or so I thought it was ok, kinda cute. Then I realised it had several issues which became more and more of a problem as time went by: Firstly it has to be charged like every 5 or 6 hours. The battery is not powerful enough to handle the features of the phone, and results in a dying or dead battery every few hours. Secondly, the phone has a tendency to freeze. This started to happen more and more frequently as the phone got older. Thirdly it has some sort of PTT malfunctioning. Everytime I turned it on it gave some sort of error message about PTT contacts, even though I did not even touch the PTT button on the side. This also started to happen more frequently, and randomly (i.e. when the phone is on and I have not even touched it). The camera and video quality is VERY low. The images are fuzzy and out of focus... I can barely make them out. The camera has very LITTLE memory, so that it can hardly hold any pics, videos and mp3's. Unlike the L7 this phone does not come with a memory card slot! About 2 or 3 months ago the phone started to go blank. I would have to take out the battery and slip it back in for the phone to turn on. Finally it just never came back on, it doesn't take the charge, it is just totally USELESS now. I must add that these problems are not because of misuse or maltreatment of the phone. Physically the phone looks like it did the day i bought it. I never drop it, or toss it around... it doesn't even have scratches on it. Therefore I have not contributed in any way to the problems of this phone... the phone is just of POOR quality and at a very POOR standard. I would not advise ANYONE to buy this phone.

I am unable to view them wen I transfer them to my computer..and yet i havnt found any supporting softwares to enable me to do so. Another thing Id like to mention is dat i wish the camera would be little more powerful..many a times the pics become very blurry upon zooming or enlargening. That apart, its quite fantastic.. Also Id appreciate very much if anyone wud b kind enough to suggest how should i handle/view the .3g format video clips..it would be really helpful. thanks.

Hi i've had a motorola l6 for a year But i dont think the memory is good, i've had to get rid of my games to have more memory to have some songs and videos on. now to get to the compliments. its cool it fits in my pocket like a dream.the battery lasts long it lasts (non stop) about 3 days but when you'r not using it it lasts 5 days. Now to get on to the camera, the camera is not bad its great for close ups on peoples faces and things like that.I paid £30 for it, and over all its great!!!

Nearly 2 years on and this beauty still works gr8. Bluetooth, vids, camera, crystal clear sound and i mustve dropped it a dozen times and it still works fine, no probs. If they like the design, colours and thinness on hollyoaks- it proves this is a classic

This phone is decent i got mine for £40 and i've had it about 4 months it's pretty good small camera but i'd say it's exeptional for the phone. The catch i'd say is the MP3 memory i have about two proper songs and I cant fit anymore in it's a pretty fustrating that it doesn't have a memory card slot for memory. Furthermore, Great Phone.

this is the worst phone i have ever owned! every one says it's top banana but it is a total waste of money time and care. i have had it for about a year and ever since i got it i have been thinking of ways to brake it! so i got online and ordered the first phone i saw on the orange website, wich happened to be a sony ericson w200i. i don't have a clue what it looks like or what its features are because it hasn't come yet, wich is understandable because i ordered it 2 days ago. so motorolas are all rubish, nokia are the best and i like samsung and sony ericson. oh and don't buy a motorola because you will seriusly regret it!!!

I just switched to a Samsung D900i and I miss this phone because of its easy to use functions and tough casing. It's a great beginners phone, tough to scratch the metal casing, and an excellent speaker. It can download a few songs from your PC too, but the camera has a mind of it's own-the pictures turn out blurry which is really annoying. Don't rely on the video unless it's a nice and sunny day with your subject on close up. The size is brill too, slim but too lightweight so that you don't know it's there. all in all a great basic phone.
