Motorola E550 review
| ||Review: March 2005
Last updated August 2005
In a nutshell: The Motorola E550 is based on the Motorola V300, and is available on T-Mobile.
The E550 adds video recording, Bluetooth™ wireless connectivity and a new keypad. The new keypad is much improved, with larger, more tactile keys. The E550 has an exterior soft-touch finish, but is otherwise very similar in appearance to the Motorola V550.
The new features fix most of the shortcomings with the old V300 and in fact the specification of the E550 is nearly identical to that of the V550. However the E550 still has a rather high weight compared to clamshells from other manufacturers. The E550 is a good all-round phone, but suffers from inadequate memory, so you can't store many videos or music tracks. Bluetooth can also be temperamental and the camera is average at best.
Motorola E550 features include:
- VGA digital camera (640 x 480 pixels) with 4x digital zoom
- Video capture, playback and download
- Internal display: 65,000 colours, 176 x 220 pixels
- In-built handsfree speaker phone
- Voice activated dialling
- Messaging: SMS, MMS
- Polyphonic ringtones & MP3 ringtones
- MOTOMIXER™ (Remixable MIDI ringer software)
- Event lights
- Java games: Wakeborder© & Photo Fun Editor© (embedded) & space for downloads
- Phonebook: up to 1000 entries
- Memory: 5 Mbytes
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, serial cable
- WAP 2.0, GPRS
- Size: 89 x 49 x 25 mm
- Weight: 122g
- Talktime: up to 7.5 hours
- Battery standby: up to 250 hours

The only problem I have is that the battery does not hold its charge. I rarely use it but leave it on in case I need to be contacted. I have had a phone before but used to turn it off most times maybe thats the problem. I have only just realised you can transfer pictures to computer with special lead, I don1t think this was included when I bought this phone. I have had my phone for about 4/5 years so I think it must be obsolete by now.

I still have my E550, got it when it came out and it's still working just fine. The battery hasn't degraded at all. I've taken a few photos, mainly just to have different wallpapers. Can't complain about the camera really - if you want good pics get a camera! Phone book is plenty big enough too. I thought I'd never be able to use anything but Nokia but the E550 is just so easy. Best of all is the soft feel and flip up - no more accidentally calling people while the phone's knocking around in my bag. The only thing I can't do is get my new SIM card reader to access the phone book on my laptop???

Hi, just 2 say i've used this phone for nearly 2 years now. Its easy to use, i like the Motorola design, & its features. Starting to look for a new phone, as i LOVE my music so much, & thats where the phone lets me down !!! just managed to add one 3.40 minute song & it took 10 mins ++ to add it. Checking out Samsung, Sony Ericcson & Nokia now ! its time for me 2 move on in the phone market & get listening to my favourite music on the move !! Its a good starter phone, dont know how much price is now but just under 2 years ago, cost me £80 !!!

It took 13 years for me to switch from my 'brick' of a mobile to one I actually liked. The Motorola E550 just 'felt' right and had all the features I wanted and at a reasonable price. Probably not used it to it's full potential with bluetooth & MP3 but has really served it's purpose for me. Have read some of the low reviews on this product, the purchasers who gave this mobile a low rating should really research a product before purchasing, to saves all the 'winging' after! It is your own fault if the E550 did not reach your expectations. I had my E550 stolen today - will try and get another but not out much hope! Sharon.

When Motorola first launched this phone back in 2004 it would have been one of the best phones going. But in the space of 3 years technology has moved on. The Bluetooth speed is slow, The camera and video qualities are poor, There is no real MP3 player the USB is far too difficult, The games dissapear after 4 months and also looks rather ugly (especially in blue). Motorola is a poor make and I would reccomend Sony Ericsson, Samsung or Nokia.

I was wrong. before i was kinda in the middle ages and had never had a camera phone before, so i guess that explains me being excited. but now i have upgraded to a sony w810 which is excellent - the e550 freezes, is slow, has rubbish memory and is bulky with its 130g weight and pertruding antennae. sorry if i misled some people into buying this phone before - they can't even sell it on ebay now for, like, £10, so that explains how rubbish it is. don't bother, kay?

Sturdy strong phone. Stylish yet simple design. Now, the camera is its best feature. Its quality is amazing - even compared to the Motorola RAZOR, its clarity and detail is amazing for its pixel rating. One bad point about this phone is its memory. Video recording is too short, can only handle a few short clips and is often slow to save. This goes the same for its voice recording. BUT.. This is a very reliable phone. If your looking for a phone to store hundreds of mp3s, store lots of pictures/videos then simply buy a walkman phone or one which you can purchase additional memory. Overall - reliable if your looking for a simple, durable phone with some extra features.

the battery, which has natuarally deteriorated over time). The sound
quality is superb, unlike many Samsung phones you can set MP3's to be
the msg alert tone, alarm and ringtone. The phone is quite light and
feels very ergonomic. The menus are very user friendly. Features are
good, but I think the high-tech demanding customer will not feel satisfied:
Bluetooth is good, camera very basic (a third of a megapixel), video
very very basic (but almost reasonable if you have a lot of light) and
the phone memory is very small (just 5mb, not expandable. Main plus

This phone is truly class. Some say you can only get it to record vids for about 7 secs - if you go to setup, you can change the time to about 20 seconds - me and my mates were having so much fun filming! The fotofun is
kl - a truly great way to make fun of everyone - and the Motomixer is really cool, as you can compose your own ringtones quickly and easily.
This is my second phone - I nabbed it for £20 - and it was a real bargain.
I guess it is kinda heavy, and bigger compared to some samsungs, but what
can you expect; It's a motorola, packed with features.
Now, I don't know whether it's because I bought it second-hand, but mine didn't come with a USB cable OR a bluetooth dongle. Now, what's the point of having the capability of doing these things if you have to pay an
extra £15 to buy the cable/dongle? Pointless, I say.
Nevertheless, I really do love this phone for everything it can do (iTap is so handy, the camera is good, it's user-friendly - I didn't need the instructions!) so I reccommend this phone for anyone who wants a middle-range, fun camera phone.

phone all round. Great style, looks good and feels nice and is quite
solid especially the flip part. Sounds are of very good quality and

Video/picture quality is not bad compared to other phones and the phone

after mass storage then it's not such a bad thing. Everything else is
good, I can't fault this phone at all. All the thing you normally want
in a phone (call/standby battery life, call quality etc) work well.
You can use mp3 clips as ringtones and they sound good as well. The
only other small gripe is that when you want to bluetooth a ringtone
or picture to someone, you need to select 'copy' - there's no option
to 'send'. It then switches bluetooth on and searches for other devices.
It also has a rubberised 'skin' which feels odd but nice! You can't
compare this phone to the high-end models on the market right now but
for what it is, I'm happy with it.

a camera phone when you cannot even expand it you can onley store vidieos
for 25 seconds and they rare of poor quality i wouldnt recoment this

The motorola E550 is a brilliant phone i would know because i own one
but there could be one improvement, there should be more memory on the
phone. Ihave ran out of memory on my phone but it is very good to own!

Easy to use..good graphics. Downloaded a ringtone which sounds excellent.
And as for the camera..come on now if you wanna take pics get a digital
camera. I would not use the camera on this phone to take proper pics.

Its a very good phone, the reception, bluetooth connection and tones
are great, but the camera is not so good. I've had worse phones with
way better cameras.

there is enough space for anyone to write what they want that is why
there is space for 100 reviews. some people that buy phones do believe
it or not want other features for this kind of price on pay as you go
it would be a little waste if youjust use it for a call or two.

Melissa Its very hard to find out what a phone is really like on here
because you have to sift through reviews where people rate a phone badly
because the video camera recording only lasts 10 seconds or it only
holds 1 mp3 there are a lot of people who want a phone to make calls
beleive it or not and it would be nice to find out if a phone really
lives upto the name of it being a phone and not a multimedia centre.
In the end i got it (free of course) and your right it is a good phone.
clarity of voice is good and i can hear it in the next room, battery
life is amazing and the speaker phone is a useful feature. If anyone
want to use this phone for making calls then its good. About the rest
i wouldn't know as i haven't even gone near the rest of it and probably

Emma, you can prevent the start-up 'noise' by switching to vibrate-only
ring mode (via smart buttons on left side of phone)before switching
off the phone. The irritating noise on start-up would have been specified
by the Network Operator (b***** marketing people....)
