Motorola E398 Review

Phone rating:

Review: September 2004. Updated November 2005.

The Motorola E398, available in the UK on on T-Mobile has been designed as a dual-function mobile phone and music player.

The E398 can play music stored in MP3 format. The sound quality of the E398 is excellent, with 3D (surround sound) stereo speakers and CD quality sound. In fact the E398 is the first phone in the UK market to have surround sound. A stereo headset can also be used with the phone.

Although the internal memory at 5 Mbytes is not huge, MP3 tracks can be stored on the new format TransFlash™ memory cards. TransFlash cards are tiny, and at the time of writing (September 2004) are available in sizes up to 128 Mbytes, although larger sizes will become available in the future. Battery capacity when used as an MP3 player is claimed to be 4.5 hours.

The phone also plays MP3 ringtones, so you can set your favourite track to be your ringtone. You can also compose your own ringtones using Motorola's MotoMixer™ software. The phone lights up rythmically when the phone rings, which is a cool feature. At night the backlight makes the keypad light up as well as the screen, which looks great and is practical too.

Apart from the music features, the phone is extremely well-featured, more like a business-class phone. The phone has an integrated digital camera with 4x digital zoom and a camera light for taking pictures in low light. The phone is capable of video playback, but not video recording. The screen is of excellent quality, with 65k colours and a high resolution - the same as the Motorola V600. The screen quality is ahead of anything currently made by Nokia. The phone's connectivity options are excellent with a choice of Bluetooth™ wireless connectivity as well as both USB and serial cables for connection to a PC. Other features include downloadable Java™ games (enhanced by vibration!), a built-in speakerphone, MMS and a picture phonebook. In fact the functionality of the E398 is almost identical to the V600, apart from the extra music features of the E398.

All things considered, the E898 is an exceptionally well-featured phone. It's attractively styled, compact, with a user-friendly icon-driven user interface, and it's not heavy when you consider how many features the phone has. The phone is well-built and feels good to hold, with an easy-to use keypad and joystick. We highly recommend this phone for those looking for a combined phone and MP3 player. You should also consider the Motorola ROKR E1 with its iTunes interface.

Features of the Motorola E398 include:

  • Display: TFT, 65,000 colours, 220 x 176 pixels
  • Integrated digital VGA camera: 640 x 480 resolution, camera light, 4x digital zoom
  • Video Clip Playback with sound
  • Bluetooth™ wireless connectivity, plus USB & RS232 PC connectivity

  • Internal memory: 5 Mbytes
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS
  • Tri Band (900/1800/1900)
  • Weight: 107g
  • Size: 108 x 46 x 21 mm
  • Talktime: 9 hours
  • Battery standby: 9 days
  • MP3 battery playtime: 4.5 hours

I`ve read the other reviews and I see a very wide range of opinions, All those who think that this fone is rubbish should`ve returned it for a refund, especially in the cases where the fone is obviously faulty, mine has locked up on occasion & I class that as a minor inconvenience as taking the battery out sorts it. I love the quality of the mp3 player, especially thru the supplied Stereo Headset, the ringtones are the best I`ve come across on a fone in over 10 years of mobile fone ownership, "LAME JAVA APPS" is one comment that I think is wrong you want to go gaming??? get a console or PC, U want to pass the time?? use the "LAME JAVA APPS". I`m sorry to read that the Black Eyed Peas content isn`t to your taste, some will like some will not like, that people is life, we are not production line produced, we are individuals, each unique with our own likes & dislikes, deal with it. I love my moto, even tho I`ve experienced 1 or 2 probs but my opinion is that it is an excellent fone, well made, well designed, plenty of good features, a nice solid fone that should last quite a while. I`ve also used mine as a data/fax modem on my home PC and had very good connectivity and data transfer rate. 10 out of 10

The color display on this phone is fantastic. More so, I totally love the mp3 player (especially when using the headphones); the sound is excellent. And being able to set an mpg3 for a ringtone is also cool. But those things are somewhat set off by a so so camera, lame java apps, and a very, very, poor video playback.

On my second E398, this is an extremely moddable phone. Video recording, voice notes, skins, all the faults with this phone apart from the nonsensical uselessness of the lights can be fixed & enabled if u know what you're doing. I have no problems with it now, apart from the crap camera resolution. It's solid as anything too - the first phone got sent back after being repeatedly crushed against concrete, but the worst thing that happened was a cracked screen. If you want a durable phone without a stupidly breakable flip then this is it. I would recommend you buy one sourced from outside the UK as the T-Mobile version comes with an internet button on the front, not useful if you're on pay as you go (I have disabled it, but it's extremely tricky and voids the warranty), has only two skins, and some embarrassing Black Eyed Peas "content" locked on it. Great phone!

This phone is a brilliant example of counter intuitive navigation. I think the designers must have been a bunch of sadists. There are so many things that can go wrong with this handset- battery doesn't charge properly, serious bluetooth connectivity issues, very slow and weird predictive text for sms, completely useless jazz like flashing lights (I still havent figured out how to disable them when playing games),extremely slow data transfer speeds when copying music to the memory card etc. The software that comes with the phone is equally useless and has a mind of its own...half the time it keeps saying that the modem is not installed. On the rare occasion that it does detect the phone, it may not allow you to copy a song or a video (Request denied by phone- internal server error). Interestingly the video conversion module allows you to convert various video formats into the standard 3GP format. there's just one problem- the end result is displayed at a resolution of 128 x 256 (half the screen size) so unless you have incredibly good vision you cant make out whats going on. The list goes on - no FM radio, no video recording, no sms delivery reporting unless you have some special software installed, slow response times etc . All in all its a pity that Motorola launched the phone so soon. One gets the impression that they could have tested it more before unleashing it on unsuspecting customers. I'm going back to my old trustworthy Nokia 3310, a lot less features, but a lot more sensible phone.

A really great phone, but unfortunately it has(like most motorolas) everything different when it comes to navigation. I guess it`s just the american way to do it their way instead of making it similar to other pones navigation. Also, the analog isn`t the best i`ve seen. And the MP3 player could switch into other songs instead of stopping after playing. But these are minor problems.

I upgraded to this phone from a nokia 8250 (old yes but it never let me down) as i was travelling overseas and needed a tri-band phone. Upon arriving in canada the phone began to have problems. I would wake up some mornings to find it sitting there with the rhythm lights, screen and keys flashing more or less frozen. The only way to bring it out of this state was to take the battery out and turn it on again as the off key would not work. This happens frequently and has just done it as i am writing this review now back in australia. As for the features? text messaging is slow and frustrating navigating through the phone takes forever and the mp3 feature is overrated. The only feature i found useful is the speakerphone which most other phones have anyway. If you like flashing lights and music buy a torch and an mp3 player this phone sucks i will never buy another motorola.

1st off the greatest phones I've ever owned. Well sad part is that it got stolen three weeks after I got it. I had to go for counseling cos I was addicted my Moto. Now I'm back to my old c350i (pathetic I know). Anyway, back when I still had it. I totally love this phone, I completely dig the MP3 player, the Bluetooth is really responsive. I never really got around to playing much games but the soccer that's on there is complete crap. Anyway, I don't understand why you can't play MP3's and have the phone locked instead of having it unlocked and not being able to put it in your pocket so you can walk around without attracting too much attention. I managed to solve this problem by loading all my MP3s to the 'Sound Player' instead. That way I can also use it as a ringtone... (*grins*) I also found that the battery doesn't last very long (3 days max). It used to freeze up sometimes and I'd have to switch it off and back on again, which is seriously frustrating. I'm working on getting another one soon. Hope they don't steal it too... Spread Moto Love

The preloaded games are fun and entertaining and u can download ur own games as it is Java compatible. It has Mp3 quality ringtones with options 2 download more. U can make ur own ringtonez with motomixer. It cant take videos but it can play them. The phonebook can hold lots of entries. The fone even has flashing lights 4 when ur in a disco. The messages are easy 2 write with predictive text. The only thing i hate about the phone is the network T-mobile. U cant get it on any other network as it is exclusive. The fone is also gr8 4 buisness users (as it is bluetooth compatible) as well as teenagers. But, the E398 is great because you don't have to configure/install/set up anything to enjoy it's features. Perhaps like me, charge him up, plug in the cable, upload ur fave trax n pix and bingo!! I've had the phone now since shortly before Xmas and am generally happy enough with it. The disappointments are mostly due, I fear, to my not being a part of its designated 'Youth' target group. Anyway, my observations: The E398 certainly looks good and is fine for larger hands as the keys are also quite large. It is light and the screen itself is large and bright away from direct sunlight. The camera on normal aparture produces good results for a mobile - just about printable on a good, bright day. Main disappointment here is that although there are two zoom modes, the use of each reduces the picture size so that on full zoom you end up with a pic about the same size as the mobiles display with no chance of any corrections with graphics software. Still, this isn't supposed to be a digicam after all. I haven't used the software included for creating any mp3 lists but it is simple and effective for switching data between phone and PC. The kids might love having flashing lights to go with their music. For me, in my forties, I find the lights irritating and wonder why anyone would want to listen to music on the built in speakers - they remind me of hearing John Peel on a hand-held tinny transistor radio in my youth. They also mean that everytime the phone rings it vibrates a bit even when not on vibrate mode. When I did try to download my own ringtone it took a couple of minutes to handle 25 secs of mp3 so I wonder how long it takes to download the hours worth of music that the included memory card reputedly holds. Three games come with it. Only a boat-surf one has any entertainment value. The football is too small and 'Go Gimps' is just, well, irritating. Other java games can be downloaded but that costs more money of course. It seems in fact that there is plenty available for the kids to download, not surprisingly T-Mobile has added a T-Zones button to make this dead easy and therefore of course dead expensive. Obviously someone said 'Lets sell a mobile to the kids with easy access to downloads so they spend a fortune. Most important, make sure the free games are so naff they go online for better ones'. If you want your own ringtone its easier and cheaper to make it yourself with Nero etc. I read somewhere that the E398 should have a dictating machine onboard but maybe this was taken out to make room for more flashing lights. A video recording facility would also have been preferable to pulsing lights but this is also missing. There are also a lot of wallpapers and ringtones which is fine except that they cannot be deleted so they waste space and make looking for what you DO want slower. Sending messages is okay although rather slow and irritating when the phone makes suggestions for what it thinks you want and then you have to change it. This all sounds rather complaintive, Put simply the phone itself is fine - it's largely what has been gadgeted in that's annoying - but as I say, I'm not part of the target group. If you are then maybe you'll love it. Just go easy on the downloads for your pockets sake.

Junk. My review will not address the features of the phone, unless there is a major problem with that particular feature. The last review I read on this quite possibly the most over-hyped, and useless handset the Motorola E398 said in conclusion - "best handset ever". Well, all I can say to that is the person was given one free, since that's the only way I would even say anything positive about it. For the rest of us idiots, who fall for the marketing hype that dodgy companies like Motorola sink millions of dollars into in preference to actually delivering a worthy product, we have around 2 years to get used to the limitations that Motorola feel we need to experience in order to experience the urge to upgrade to one of their models that aren't software-crippled versions of their "premium" products. If you are someone who is fed up with Nokia, please read this review carefully before exercising your freedom of choice. In summary, if you want dinky little lights that flash with calls & your surroundings, then this is the phone for you. That's if you don't mind putting up with the things listed below. If you want a functional tool & game player, this is not the phone for you. I will start with what this phone doesn't have, and either could easily have, save for product tier marketing, or simply bad design. Firstly, the nice display is completely wasted since only a fraction of the top line is used for signal & batt meters. Moto in their infinite wisdom has decided that you'd much rather look at your funky little wallpaper rather than see easily if you can use your phone, or not. 4 level battery meter, and signal strength meter that measures 5mm square - need I say more? FM radio - wow, none here, almost standard on other brands. MP3 - For some reason, I can't even upload 3mb MP3 files. Looks like I'm going to have to convert my collection to 64kbps or less. Voice notes - amazing, since it records voice dialling, no additional software/hardware needed, but not available. Video - you can play, but not record - amazing. Keypad lock - 10 years ago, the 2 keypress lock idea was cutting edge. Others have implemented simple auto locks since then. Moto hasn't caught that particular train yet. Clunky keys - soft/hard, weird key response. Joystick key one of the worst I've experienced. Slow startup - Takes 10 seconds push on the power key to realise you want dearly to power on your phone, then you will wait another 20-30 seconds for the "funky" initialisation screens & slow network search to complete. Games - I've played great, responsive Java games on a wide array of phones. This phone is way behind in the execution of Java apps. Poor response time, makes games anywhere between frustrating to play to downright a waste of time uploading anything to it. Vibration alert - wow, this is generally a feature that was out in even entry level phones 6 years ago, but Moto has decided that you will want either, or - not both ring & vibrate at the same time. If you rely on the bass notes of the speaker to alert you in noisy envioronments, you will miss calls. Dodgy software - when scrolling through menus, you hear at random, clicking/thumping from the speaker. Keep in mind, I've only been using this particular materpiece for 4 days (and yes, I have read the manual very carefully). I have a Nokia 8310 that this phone was to replace, and guess what? Although I'll be paying for it for 2 years, this phone is going on ebay (of course at a substantial loss to me) to get the useless thing out of my sight. In terms of pure functionality & ease of use, my 8310 runs rings around this product that came out 3 years later. Bottom line - Don't beleive the hype, poorest execution of a luke-warm concept I have seen in years! Nokia, you have won yourself a customer for life...

It seems to be seconds slower than you when you do any thing and if you hate dictionary than you'll have to get rid of it every time you use messages. when you turn your phone off you'll have to reset your ring tone or if you put it on silent you'll have to reset your ring tone. My advice to any one is don't buy this phone it would be much cheaper to buy a decent camera phone and MP3 player seperatly. and if y ou want flashing lights get a flashing orb from argos for a tener.

I tried for two days getting acquainted to use this phone. The size, sound, keyboard and joystick are great, but I have to tell you. More important to me in a cell phone is phonebook and PIM functions. This feature is rubbish on this phone. Is a pain to search a contact. My phone is with call divert on and I can't turn it off. I turn it off and it is on again. Sometimes the phone hangs and you have to turn off and on to get controls back. The video playback is a joke. It's like a very slow gif animated. Transfer mp3 files using USB cable could take forever. Using a card reader is fast, but you have to take battery off and deal with very delicate slot. I didn't like it. Controls feel unresponsive sometimes. A kind of slow operation phone. Don't get me wrong, if you don't mind about phonebook and those annoyances, great phone.

Sorry, but this really sucks! Yes, the phone looks great and the loudspeakers are great too. But: If battery goes low, there is a beep every few minutes (for hours to go!) that cannot be switched off! Searching in the phonebook you can only with entering the first letter. If you got 30 people starting with F, you'll have to click your way down to the right one! Which is slow. Also when writing sms, the phone lags behind a lot with the writing. Especially when erasing backwards, uups, and out of the sms you are... When changing sim-cards (i travel and use different cards), many of the phone's settings (ringer setting etc.) are reset and you have to set up your phone again. I'm selling it, had it 2 weeks only. Anyone interested? And i forgot, sometimes, a certain setting hangs, you have to switch the phone off to make it work a again (eg. setting a ringtone). Well, the memory card is behind the battery. You dont want to change it too often. Definitely my first and last Motorola !

this would be more of an advice than a comment. firstly.. the motorola E398 has a good vga camera, the reason it hasn't reached the 'very good' stage,is because when u capture a dark image(eg object is black in colour) the object WOULD NOT appear as purely black. instead, it will appear as a not-so-interesting combination of black and tiny red polka dots! this is highly annoying, and the flash only proves to be more of an aggravation. in a dark room, take a self portrait of yourself with the flash on, this is what u should expect : outline of your face + black-and-red-pokla-dots blackground that points to the lousy camera quality. HOWEVER(thankfully!), the camera can capture amazing pictures in the day.this camera's capability is more clearly shown in capturing sceneries..FANTASTIC! also, the camera viewfinder does not fully take up the area of the screen. it only occupies 2/3 of the screen and can be quite dissapointing. this phone lags alot.. every single button pressed crea tes a <1 second lag, always the main cause of ur loss in 'pinball'.. the messaging lags like 'sceond to none'..u use the dictionary(dictionary is hard to use too, compared to nokia's), and then type 'i love this phone', it'll take five seconds for all the letters to show up on the screen. wad it does is, it slowly catches up with your typing,LETTER FOR LETTER!! the software tt comes with this phone tt allows mp3 transfer is very poor.(very slow too, i heard) i couldn't transfer a single track to the phone! so i finally decided tt the 64mb flash card would be better used as picture storage device. having addressed all the problems, its up to u to decide whether or not to buy this phone, my advice is, teenagers who sends sms alot, should not get this phone as it slows u down alot. while adults who use this phone for its call function and low cost, feel the need to get the motorola E398 because it will not dissapoint u. this phone does not hang or shut down automatically ;)

my previous phones were nokia 7610, and p910i. I basically change my phone after a few months, so far, i think i will stick to this phone for a long time. it's small, features are so, so. once in a while i miss the features of nokia, like managing the contacts, video recorder, saving unfinished sms in drafts. i think for a java phone, this is okay. one thing i like about e398 is the great sound for the tones and the attractive lights. the picture quality is so so, average. i am into ring tones. one big plus about this phone is that isync recognizes the contacts. unlike nokia and ericsson. i am so much tempted into getting the v3, but the prices are still high and i just got this phone for just a week. but comparing the features of v3 and e398, they are basically the same... except for the flash card which e398 has and the aluminum body of the v3... for me the memory is more important, that is why i am sticking to the e398. but the form of v3 is calling me and my mac. the size of the e398 and the grip on the phone is good, easy to slip in the pocket in having to attend to a patient. i haven't played with the motomixer though... am still looking forward to that. bluetooth is great, works well with mac and a generic bluetooth headset. screen is great too for a 65k, similar to 252k of ericsson. one thing might entice me to go nokia again, if the 6630 arrives here... and videoconferencing really worked out in our country. i still keep a 9500nokia and hp 6300, for my patients list and isilo usage respectively. this is a good phone for the pocket, but for pda, professional use.... others are still better. i cannot wait for the mpx. we don't have it here yet... maybe by then i can cut down my toys to 2.

Well okay, this phone is junk! I'm sorry... but it is. I paid £200 for it and it doesn't work properly! Whenever I have a incoming call it diverts it right away. Despite changing the settings over and over again. It just wont save! And is very aggravating. And nobody seems to care, I've rang T-Mobile and Motorola.. sent them dozens for emails and no response Also I paid for a phone not a Rap Disco Jukebox. Valuable space and memory on the phone is taken up with promotional music, wallpaper and screen savers that you can't delete! The phone is slow and your limited to two skins on it. The rhythm sensitivity lights stay on for only 10 minutes at a time. You cant remove the T-Mobile name on the main screen. The chassis of the phone was different to the one on the box. I'm really annoyed and very disappointed. I'm sending this back! Think ill stick with Nokia and Vodafone

The menu is kinda trick at first, but, i figured it out after like 2 days. Also, the phone kinda lags when using the menu and when i text. An excellent little phone. Screen is brilliant, far more advanced than anything Nokia produce at present. Sound is clear and loud. Controls and menus take a little getting used to, but are not impossible to master. MP3 player is a nice little toy, reduced Hz quality compared to standard MP3 players, but damn good for a phone. Phone has never dropped a call and has never dropped a signal. SMS and MMS are superb. Blue tooth is excellent with a brilliant signal and pickup. Only one problem...battery life is poor. I am lucky to get 3 days of use, only making 2 or 3 short calls a day, and a few text messages. My old Nokia 6100 used to last 10 days on average, so compared to this the E398 is very poor. In all, a great little phone/camera/MP3 player. Well done Motorola.

So come contract renewal time I thought what would be a good replacement. On seeing the deals offered on the E398 I thought it would be an adequate replacement. How wrong could I be!!! It's actually bloody amazing!(once you get used to the menu system). Phone reception is tons better, and the features!!! MP3 player, best camera i've ever seen on a mobile, way better than the T610. Just hope the screen is more visible in sunlight. And T-mobile are offering brilliant deals for new contracts too, loads of 1/2 price line rental and free Jabra Bluetooth headsets too! What you waiting for, go out and get one today!! (and no i'm not sponsored by either T-mobile or Motorola :):):))

The battery unfortunatey does not last for more than 2 days in my case. This could be due to the learning period that i'm in now but i'm not able to understand how others are able to stretch it to 4 days, please do let me know. Hey - the phone's OK - nice finish, good quality sound but I found the operating system has had not thought put into it at all. Most of the key functions are slow, the predictive text is rediculous - if you can type fast, it takes seconds to catch up with you before you have realised you made a mistake. Other stupid things are that you cannot search too well in the contacts list, for instance, if I wanted to get 'Angus' out of the list, you cannot press 'A' and then 'N' to get to that section, instead you start at the 'N' section. VERY frustrating if you have more that a couple of entries per letter. The little button to scroll down is also pretty crappy - taking ages to scroll. I am a die hard Nokia user, who after having a Nokia 7250i for ages, decided that that Nokia had not got any decenyt handsets out at the moment. The hardware is fine, but this phone could really benefit from Nokia's Series 60 Operating system and User Interface.

Here is how to use any MP3 file as a ringtone on your E398. I didn't want to pay Motorola/MTV for a low quality, truncated version of a song I already own, so I set about loading an MP3 from my own library. Motorola don't tell you how to do this because they'd rather you buy ringtones from them ;-) In short, you need to squish your song down to about 200kb. I would recommend shortening your song to about 40 seconds, then re-encode the MP3 using the following settings; bit rate: 32kbps, sample rate: 32Khz, channels: mono. Put this on your TransFlash card, then copy it into the phone memory. Voila! Don't worry about the horrific loss in quality; the tiny trio of transducers in this phone, while exceptional for their size, don't have the fidelity to reproduce the extra detail found in a high quality MP3 anyway. And can I just say, stereo speakers on a mobile phone is a complete wank. 3D stereo even more so; I discovered that finding the 'sweet spot' on this phone was most easily achieved by holding it in such a way that your nose is pressing against the joystick, which doesn't look to flash. In fact it makes you look like a complete tool. Good on you Motorola. Great phone though.

Altho they designed this as a Music player phone, It really takes excellent pictures! (Just keep the phone really steady) It's better than the Nokia 6600 (mind you, the catch phrase of this phone is: "The Power of Imaging") haha, yeah right Nokia, Even SE P900 pics really looks crude, cos I took a picture of the same subject with a N6600, SE P900 and my trusty E398, The image actually looks like it's a Megapixel camera, I was really wondering if they placed some parts inside wrong...maybe it's a megapixel picture sensor or something, cos it really looks good! Maybe it's because the chipmaker for Motorola is ta-daaahhh...ATI, yes, the same chip manufacturer who makes those excellent video chips for Computers (PC and Mac) which is actually better than Nvidia according to others.
