Motorola E365 Review

Phone rating:

Review: July 2004. Updated March 2005.

The Motorola E365 is an entry-level camera phone. For its price, the E365 offers a good 65k colour display and a good quality camera. That said, the software is quite slow and the reliability of the phone is poor, as can be seen from the user reviews below.

Features of the Motorola E365 include:

  • Large 65,000 colour display (128 x 160 pixels)
  • Integrated digital camera
  • MMS (multimedia messaging), EMS 5.0
  • Polyphonic ringtones & mono ringtones
  • Downloadable themes (ringtones, wallpaper & screensavers)
  • Instant messaging
  • Group SMS
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS
  • RS232 cable for connecting to a computer
  • Vibration alert
  • iTap predictive text
  • Phone book: 300 names
  • User customisable softkey functions, main menu and shortcuts
  • Voice activated dialling
  • Calculator, currency converter, date and clock, alarm, datebook with reminder alerts, PIM functionality
  • Memory: 2 Mbytes
  • Dual band
  • Standby time: up to 150 hours
  • Talk time: up to 150 minutes
  • Size: 107 x 45 x 20 mm
  • Weight: 93g

I have had this phone about 1 year now. My overall impression is it's OK but i wouldn't recomend any one to buy one as there are many better phones availble. My first comment is on the 'dust cap'. It is supposed to prevent dust getting on the lens. it should of been called 'dust magnet' becuase all the little troth does is collect dust!! Secondly taking pictures. As mentioned a few times in other comments you have to hold the phone still for about 2 secnods after pressing the button to take a picture and i have not have many good quality pictures from it. Lastly, just recently people who i have been talking to on the phone have said i come accross very quietly and muffeled. Meaning i now have to shout down the phone for people to hear me. This maybe because i have recently damaged the phone or it could be there is another 'dust magnet' where the phone picks up sound. There appears no way of taking it apart either. So overall... If you find a E365 n you aint got a phone then keep it its ok. But don't buy one!

I would second all the stuff mentioned by Drabs89 in the section "Reviewed by Drabs89 from Australia on 2nd Apr 2005". It has been beautifully summed up in the section. After buying the phone I realised in one month the mistake I had made. I miss the infrared i had in my previous phone and the usb justs ties me down to my computer if i need to transfer anything to and fro my phone. However, its funny so many people actually bought this phone. :) It should not have been launched in the first place considering its features are not future safe and poor connectivity options. Hope motorola can tak in some feedback from this section to improve the quality of their phones. ciao,

For a business phone i don't think it would do very well but for a casual phone it is great. The only problem is, it takes a while to turn on and i can't find the service inbox. If anyone knows where i can find the inbox that holds download ringtones it would be greatly appreciated. Overall its an excellent phone for its price and the graphics and colour is really good. Plus the pictures and screensavers it has are better than any other phone. They are HOT! to get to service inbox, go to browser then hold 0 until a screen appears with the ringtone or pictures you need to download.

BUT my phone just wouldnt turn on so i had to get a new one. i now have a brand new samsung d600 (better then d500) and if you can afford it get a d600 ! thanks for reading

This fone isn't that bad but it could be better. When taking photos u have to wait a few seconds cause it's really slow. Also never use the auto camera mode cause it's rubbish always use night mode even if it's daylight. The keypad buttons are also a bit small and somtimes u can end up pressing the wrong one. however the fone has got some good ringtones and can hold a number of photos and messages. So my advice to you is pay more money for a better fone cause if you buy this one u won't be happy with it.

I still have my e365, and it is the first phone I have ever had. I bought it exactly 9 months ago. At first I thought it was pretty cool having a neat first phone (large colour screen, camera) and was either going to buy this e365 or a Nokia 3200. This phone had a larger screen, which to me was more important than the FM radio (In the 3200), plus the 3200 looks tacky with the plastic covers and dodgy cut-out covers and the poor keypad, but hey that's just my opinion. Anyway... Some of the things that I don't like about this phone: Has a loud keypad, and only good if you have small hands, Takes sooo long to navigate through menus because the phone is so SLOW! Camera, although of not that bad quality, not of much use because of the time it takes to navigate through all of the photos taken, and it takes a few seconds for the photos to be taken after you press the "take" button. Photos can only really ever be taken in 'night mode' because those taken in the 'automatic' lighting c ondition are extremely poor. Plus, when viewing a photo, you need to return to the previous menu the select the next photo to view it, which takes even longer. Also, the sliding cover for the camera to protect its lense is of not much use, as after a while it does not stay in place, and just slides across when the phone is tilted. The mirror finish on the phone (for when taking self-portraits) is of no use either - because this cover sticks out of the back of the phone it is scratched and you are unable to see pictures in it anyway. The ringtones on the phone are very poor, there were no good default tones on there when I got the phone, and ringtones are pretty expensive to get when you have NO good ones to start with, so I was stuck with lame, crappy tones for a while. The volume of the phone is not too bad, however cannot be heard easily in noisy environments. The vibration alert on the phone is BAD. Obviously, I'd use this when I don't want the phone to make a noise, but I will still be able to tell when I receive a msg/call... Well the vibration is noisy. I don't even see the point of it, coz it's just like having the ringing alert on because it's so loud. Battery life is rubbish- I last just over 1 day and then need to recharge my phone again, and the connector to recharge the phone gets on my nerves coz its rectangular, and you have to have it the right way around, not like with Nokia's round connection points, anyway that's a minor thing but it got on my nerves quickly. Texting is also rubbish- Takes sooo long to write a msg because the phone is so slow, and because of the noisy keypad, becomes a real pain. Not to mention how the custom words which you make get deleted every time the phone is turned off, which really sucks when a lot of the stuff you write isn't whole or actual words. And this isn't helped when the phone decides to randomly turn itself off at times, often during calls. When the phone is turned on and off the startup/shut down tones are really annoying, and you cannot remove them, so everytime you need to turn your phone on/off in public you need to change your incoming call alert to "off" so that it doesnt make the stupid sound. When the phone is turned on, after having to wait for a long time after pressing the on button, I am not able to access my MessageCentre or phonebook. It just says "Try Later" and I need to wait a long time after my phone is turned on before I can access these features. The back cover on the phone is always falling off, and it gets really annoying. The only ONE good thing about this phone is that is will not completely break, however this is kind of not a positive feature on the phone for me, as if it broke it is just an excuse to buy a new phone, not saying the quality of this phone isn't enough of a reason. Well I'm thinking about buying a new phone in the next few weeks. Nokia 6020 perhaps? Well finally, the overall look of the phone is almost as bad as what's inside it. I don't reccommend this phone... Very poor. Drabs :)

I have had this phone for almost 1 year. I use it in Hong Kong where you can see just so many new cell phones each day. [Control] This phone is extremely slow. Especially when checking messages, it just acts like freezing - given that if you have a lot of messages in it. [Sound/vibration] You probably won't recognize its existence if you are using it in a busy/noisy city like Hong Kong. [Picture] The resolution is high in its category. However, the quality isn't as impressive as the resolution. In general, it's only around the same as the Sony Eri T610. (however, when in dark envir. T610 does better!) [Durability] I had it returned to Motorola for repair. The speaker was not working. They took 1 month to repair this for me! And this phone is easily invaded by "dust". I have used many phones before, this one is one of the most easily polluted by dust. The overall rating is bad! The worst thing is the speed when accessing SMS and different functions. The interface is NOT considered to be good and friendly.

Its only got 1 star because there isn't an option for 0 or minus stars. I hate every single thing about this phone. It is the biggest waste of money I've ever spent and the only good thing that came out of it is that I learnt that "only fools rush in" is true. I have some so close to smashing it to bits countless times and am only writing this review now to vent my spleen about it. Everything about it is bad, but lets start at the top: Looks- Looks like a remote control. Can't easily change the case and the shutter for the camera is pointless as all it does is collect dust. Battery life- appalling, makes the iPod look like the duracell bunny. Needs charging at least once a day. Menu system- Bizzare to say the least. Like everything else about this phone its stupidly slow, it feels like someones installed Windows XP on a 486/66. Texting- This is one of this phones worst features. You have to really bash the keys, often having to press them 2/3 times, its I N C R E D I B L Y S L O W. Whilst I had it I barely texted anyone cos it was so much hassle and took so long. The predective text input system feels like its been designed by chimps that don't speak English. If you really are going to buy this, dip your computer keyboard in treacle and try using it for a week to get an idea of what it will be like. Phone Calls- not too bad on this front but then it has to get somethign right I guess. GPRS- rubbish. Works about every 1/5 times, after you've used it you can't use it for ages for some reason. Gimmicks- No java games. Default games are unbearably bad. Ringtones are rubbish, pictures, screensavers are rubbish (unless you're MTV's "Super Fan No.1!!!!!" ). Camera- Is actually pretty good, good picture and contrast (!). However browsing through photos is uselessly slow so it looses points still. All in all, I hate this phone and if it broke tommorow I would feel cheated that it broke on its own and wasn't by destroyed by me throwing under a bus or off a bridge.

After seeing some of the reviews here (DON'T BUY THIS PHONE, IT'S RUBBISH!!!111!!1) I really feel that i should stick up for the little guy. I had it bought for me for my 16th birthday by my friends, and it really is one of the best phone i've had. The picture quality (depsite what SOME people reckon) is really good, it adjusts quickly to the level of light, and has a very good night mode function. (you've got to take into account as well that this is a fairly cheap phone) and also, it has a very smart little slide to protect the camera lens from getting damaged. Visually, it looks superb, it's stylish, and also the colous schemes you can choose from are very nice. It's quite exaggertaed to say that it takes 5 seconds to take a photo. fair enough, there is a very small delay between when you actually press the button and the photo being captured, but it really isn't significant. It also has a few really good ringtones, and they sound great through the very cool speaker-ish thingy on the back. However it DOES take a long time to start up, and goes about it very noisily (which can be a bit embaressing, i don't know if yo ucan switch the noise off though :s) and navigating ur inbox when you have lots of messages can be frustrating, as it seems to slow the phone down. The same type of problem also happens when typing a txt.

This phone is good in the short term (i.e two months) but after that, the cracks begin to show. Good points - good camera (although without a zoom, landscape pics turn into a blur of colour), easy navigation with softkeys, good games (when they dont crash), sturdy case....Bad points - Ever since I bought it 8 months ago, it's turned itself off and on, off and on regularly, with no warning (even when I'm mid conversation), the iTap text entry method takes a bit of getting used to, especially after having a Nokia, but you get the hang of it in the end (even though it takes half an hour to write a decent understandable text message). Don't get this phone if you plan to keep many texts in your inbox - after about 30, it takes forever to open any messages. My handset started playing up properly yesterday, not being able to receive calls and when I make any, the person on the other end can't hear a damn word I'm saying, along with the fact it is now turning itself off every 3 minutes. Advice to me from Orange? Get a new phone. Advice to you from me? Don't buy this one. Cheap, but reflects the price.

The only problem is i was so eager to check it out that i forgot you had to charge it for like 16 hours or so before u use it! A few hours later i remembered and put it straight on the charger. It has been around 24 hours since then and already the battery has only got 1 bar! I guess this is becos I didn't charge it straight away, but the lady who sold it to me didn't tell me I had to charge it and i am angry becos my friend rings me every night and it is goin to keep turning off on me. There might be a way to fix it, i am not sure yet, but apart from that it seems to be a good phone. If u are going to buy this phone make sure u ask about charging the phone before u use it! That's probably why so many people are having trouble with it.

I've had the phone for about 9 months now, and to be honest i'm really starting to get sick of it. THe most annoying thing is the iTap messaging. My sister bought a motorola a few months ago and sold it within a couple of days it took so long to right messages. The poor messaging isn't specific to this phone, i find it's the same with all motorola phones. What is specific to this phone is that it is really really slow. messages take ages to access when you had lots of them stored, and the software is really slow, especially the wap software. plus the layout of the software is a complete pain to use when trying to access some of the functions. the camera is ok, but the memory isn't great. Overall, i would not recommend this phone as there are better options out there. personally i'm going to dump this after christmas

I've had this phone for about a year now. I wanted a cheap phone with a camera as I didn't have a great deal of money at the time. £90 with sim, I thought was pretty good. I think it's a very good phone. The only things wrong with it are that it can take a while to write a message in iTAP mode, and accessing your inbox or outbox when there are a lot of messages in it can take a while too. Other than that, I've had no problems with it. The camera has been good and useful, and the phone hasn't let me down at all yet. It's been dropped, thrown about and still works. Admittedly, when I dropped it, it turned off, but worked fine when it was turned on. A very nice little phone. If you want something more or better, you have to pay for it.

Its quite well equipped and has a lot of features. The games are excellent but the wap is slow and not worth using. The wap often breaks down and the camera lens is fiddly to operate and use. Good camera but the screen is always smudged. Good price but I must admit I was not too impressed with the ITap text method which is complicated and takes a long time to use and so does the picture messaging. A bit more time for voice recording would be good aswell!!! Fantastic graphics but could use a zoom on the camera for long range pictures.

Ok , neither do i work for Nokia or Samsung or any electronic Company , i just study.I was on a Nokia 3310 , then Nokia 7250 and then I saw these nice reviews abt a Motorola Phone in a popup and i dearly wish i did`nt. The phone was perfect compared to my Nokia , except for the looks but i was impressed by the software and other customer reviews i've read. So well , i blew up all my pocket money on this cell . And purchased it in May 2004 from Kuwait Motorola Room. Now Im in India and it worked fine for the first 2 months .. then came the problems. first i had a software problem , something called . try later if i tried to access my phone book or my messages. then i sent it back to Kuwait , they said "We cant find wat the problem with your phone is" then they replaced the software and my cell was all good again.. And after a month and a half after i get it again , one day it decides just to stop charging. i take it to the Motorola guys here and they tell me it's a hardware problem and something cracked because i might have dropped it , inspite of me insisting i did`nt. So that's it.. they make u accept something that's not true. Now i'll be sending this gunk to Kuwait again to get it fixed under warranty as i find it useless to spend money on this. i just hope it sticks with me for another year and a half so that it wud depreciate of the money i blew up on it. and after that 1 year when i work and start making my own cash. I aint going to sell this piece of junk , i`m just gunno hammer the life out of it and give myself the immense satisfaction. So to all those who think that this phone is a budget phone with a pretty good camera , think again . what good can a phone do if it got an average camera but gives loads of problems!? And this is the first and the last motorola i will ever buy. And to all those motorola morons who came out with the quote "intelligence everywhere" i'd rather not give a quote for such a piece of gunk!

The sound quality is appalling- you can't hear the person on the other end of the phone, and it keeps turning itself on and off. The memory capacity isn't much cop either, and when your message box fills up, the phone slows down- it takes ages to read and delete your messages. One of my close friends bought it after he saw mine, he seems fed up with it also!! My phone is being put up for repair for the second time becuase the keypad is not working! I can honestly say i am not buying a motorola again, their phones are too slow.I like texting so i was deeply disappointed at the fact that afta say 5 words the keys started slowing down and u had to end up deleting what you've just written because its all wrong!! You cant create your own screensavers either until you download new *moving* ones you have to be stuck with ones already preset to the phone. When going through pictures you have to view them all separatly, there isnt a 'hide softkeys' or there isnt a quick full screen flick through. I am only 14 years old and i am very disappointed because i have to wait till my next birthday to get a new phone u nless i save up for myself!!!!And because the phone is in for repair im using my old Nokia (( black and orange screen )) also there is no moto mixer just a melody maker, with this you CANT change the tempo or anything! The camera is alright when you're outside but there is no photo effects or zoom or anything really interesting for young people to play around with. It's certainly for older people who arent really bothered just want a decent camera/colour phone. I am very disappointed, defenatly wouldn't recommend it too anyone, TAKE IT OFF THE MARKET OR MAKE IT BETTER!!!! luv ya!! xXxXxXx

This was a cheap entry-level camera fone-- which is why I bought it. But it just *does not* work! Firstly, the software is incredibly slow; meaning the delay between pressing a function key and getting a repsonse is unacceptabe. Secondly, the alarm clock is TOTALLY unreliable; I've overslept on numerous occassion because my E365 (despite being set, and volume-on) decided *not* to ring. Unlike Nokia, the phonebook cannot distinguish a number in its international and local-prefix format. The dilemma occurs when your operator uses international number format for SMS, but not for voice calls. To identify a contact who both texts AND calls you, you need to store their number in BOTH formats :-O The signature on/off tune is terrible; and *so* loud. I cannot hear anyone who calls me-- even tho the speaker is set high, and I'm *not* deaf! Finally, the phone's ringer is quite low; and the vibrate-alert (like the alarm) only works sporadically. Nokia! I'm coming home...

When I first bought this phone I thought it looked pretty good, with the design, etc. However, ive had it a few months now and ive noticed quite a few faults with it. Firstly, for some reason it keeps switching itself off every so often, and when you do switch it on, it makes an annoying noise (which you can't change!) When you receive picture messages it takes about 5 mins before you can actually see them, which gets annoying after a bit. When you come to sending a message, the first few words are ok, but once you've written about 5 words it starts to slow down and takes ages to finish you're message and it stores all your messages which you've sent in the outbox, which you have to delete one by one. I'd say that taking photos isn't too bad, its a shame that you can't zoom in or anything and the quality at night is poor, you can store a few photos but not really that many.It is pretty good that you can cover up the lense when not using the camera so that it doesn't get scratched. The sound quality isn't too bad, it has plenty of polyphonic ringtones on. However, when the phone came out the ringtones sounded good, but now that better phones have come out they don't really sound that good anymore, just plain average i suppose. Scrolling through the menus are pretty easy, and the functions are easy to use. The phone itself is pretty strong (i've dropped it a few times and theres no major damage) The screen is easy to scratch however and it does tend to wear on the corners of the phone. I'd say that overall this phone is average, its the text/media messaging thats a big let down on this phone and wouldn't recommend it if you're wanting a pretty decent camera phone.

Well, I bought this phone around 9 months ago, and have been very disappointed with it. It seems to have the slowest software ever. If all you want from a phone is a camera, text and games, then this phone is passable. The battery tends to last a couple of days (not a huge problem). The most annoing thing is it's volume. When in a conversation, it is difficult to hear the other person, and I often don't hear it ring (or feel it vibrate!) I'm so disappointed with this phone, that I have reverted to my old V50 (which is nearly 3 years old). I bought the E365 to replace the V50, how ironic! Would not reccomend this phone for any sensible usage.

Ok, lets firstly say that overall this is not a bad phone. Its cheap, packed with features and small. Secondly lets say that most of the features it does include are of good quality. Lets start with the main most of us would buy it for, sadly the camera- not saying the camera is sad. On the actual phone, the pics look mostly superb. There are 2 camera options- night mode and normal. Night mode alows you take take pictures indoor and in darker places but it drasticaly reduces the sharpness and quality of the images when viewed on a computer screen- if you only inted to view them on the phone no prob with the quality. The normal mode is faster and sharper, any outdoor shots will be awesome, in darker situations you will have a problem, the pictures become grainy and blue lines appear across the screen, if its only semi dark its worth keeping this option as opposed to night just for the quality. Finally the thing that make this camera stand out is the ability to take 640x someth ing pictures (means proper size), most phones don't support this size. Major downside is that it doesnt have a zoom. Actual voice calling, surprisingly is poor, the volume, at max is still hard to hear even on a quiet train- if your main purpose is to make voice calls as opposed to sms etc this phone isnt good. Itll do though. Ringtones sound good, very good. Screen is excellent, 64000 colours, so is backlight. Battery life is ok, some people complain, i dont think its a problem. 3 days of intense use and itll need a charge, minimal use, say, 4 1/2 days. Java- in the optus ads it said that this phone has java, it doesnt. Games- boring, no cant download more. Sms/ input excellent, good entry system kind of a cross between nokia and sony phones. easy to use. Overall- pretty good, but not that great compare to whats available now. Camera is its best feature, if only motorolla had included a zoom...

Well, after a dodgy Nokia 3510 & then a 7650 I thought I would get a phone from a company with a good reputation, What a mistake to buy a Motorola. The E365 is very basic & the camera is poor, the picture is grainy & the phone software is so slow to respond too user inputs. You cant have the phone on silent while it is charging, The clock can be set as either 12 or 24 hour format but the E365 will only display the 24hour format no matter what you do with the settings, also the microphone quality is poor & people struggle to hear you when using the phone. Now here comes the worst bit, Motorola's customer service, They are useless. After around 3 months I had a problem with a dodgy 9 button on the keypad, I rang the warranty number & they took the details & sent out a prepaid special delivery envelope to post them back the phone the next day. I got the phone back a week later, Upgraded software & an unfixed 9 button, another call & another return envelope. Another week passed & the phone was returned again fixed correctly this time. All was fine for 3 months again & then the E365 software started to crash, switch itself on & off & fail to charge. Another call & anther envelope, Over 2 weeks have passed & not a word from Motorola. They say you phone WILL be returned within 7 working days, What a load of rubbish that promise is! First they said they didn't even have my phone, I checked Royal mail track & trace, Motorola had it all right, Then they came out with " We dont know whats happening with your phone? " Everytime they promise to call you back they dont, Every person you speak to tells you a completely different story & try to get you off the phone as quickly as possible & they wont even let you speak to a supervisor! The customer service back up is a total let down, This was the first & will be the LAST Motorola product I have. I though Nokia customer service was useless, but Motorola have them beaten easily on that front! I was told a Motorola supervisor will ring me tomorrow between 9am & 5pm, I wont hold my breath!

I have known the Motorola reliability since the Vietnam war Walkie Talkies and they used to be very good UNTIL NOW. Users, for your own benefit, please put electrical tape on the bottom of the phone where the openings are, as they absorb moisture like crazy and will let condensation (even from your mouth) seep in and DESTROY the very fragile PCB components of your phone. First to go is the keypad component board, numbers 7,8, and 9 will start to fail, then 4, 5, and 6 will follow. Charge your batteries remotely and seal those openings!!!!

I bought this phone as a spare while my other mobile was being repaired and what a waste of money it was! For a start it has a horrible menu interface which is very awkward to navigate. The 'iTap' predictive text function is even worse that Nokia's predictive text, and is completely useless as it is near impossible to create a readable text message with it enabled. The battery life is pitiful and falls about 102 hours short of the specified 150 hours standby time. The big display screen might look appealing to some, but if it gets scratched or marked you cannot change the phone cover. The user keys feel cheap and nasty, and you need to have your ear pressed right up against the tiny speaker to hear your phone call. The display also freezes from time to time. I have only had the phone for five months and already I have had to send it away for repair because both the cheap internal speaker and mic have stopped working which made the phone even more useless than it already is. I know that this may well be a one off fault with my particular handset, but considering it is only five months old and is in perfect condition (no drops, bangs etc..), I would be very dubious of the quality of this handset, and wouldn't recommend it to anyone, not when there are plenty of other phones in the same price bracket that are of a much better quality. My advice: don't waste your money on this phone.
