Motorola C550 review
| ||Review: January 2004
In a nutshell: The Motorola C550 brings an integrated digital camera to the popular Motorola C350 design. The integrated camera features a 2x digital zoom.
The small display of the C550 is not ideal for viewing photos, and with only 4k colours, this puts the C550 at the bottom of the "entry-level" bracket of camera phones. Still, with polyphonic ringtones, Java games and plenty of other features, this is a good phone to consider if you are on a tight budget.
Motorola C550 features include:
- 4096 CSTN colour display (96 x 65 pixels)
- Integrated digital camera (VGA, 640 x 480 pixels)
- 32-voice polyphonic ringtones
- Ringtone re-mixer
- WAP 2.0, GPRS
- EMS (add graphics, animations & sounds to messages)
- Downloadable wallpaper & screensavers
- Java games
- Phone book (100 names)
- USB connectivity
- SMS chat
- Group SMS
- Clock, calendar, calculator, currency converter
- Size: 98 x 43 x 19 mm
- Weight: 94g
- Battery standby: up to 230 hours
- Battery talktime: up to 5.5 hours
- Vibration alert
- Dual band

i had this phone once, i think about 2005 and it was such a great phone for that time. I had it until it died of use because i thought that it's such a great phone. If you want to buy it nowadays i'll say NOT a great idea. compared to the mobiles before this was SO GREAT but to the mobiles nowadays of course then it's not that good. Besides i want to tell that nobody other than me knew how to use it couse it really special to unlock and such everything about how to press the bottons is upside down, so if it gets stolen the thief will have a verrry hard time to learn how to use it if he ever learns ;=) i'll give it 5 stars rating for a phone in 2005 but only 2-3 stars rating for a phone compared to the new phones in 2010 :=)

I got this phone from my dad after mine packed in and it does the job for me - ok ill agree, you can only see half a picture most of the time unless you're taking it - but it has good volume (for me) it has decent enough audio quality (of course not the best)the games can keep me occupied, so overall - i think it's a halfway decent phone!

I bougt Motorola C550 for one year eight months now and its performance is still the same just as the very minute a started using it. What even facinates me most is the performance of the battery. Before i bought the phone i made some inquiry about phones in general. My frieds kept telling me that Motorola phones are generally noted to have poor battery performance. But i was determined to satisfy by passion to use a motorola phone so i went to buy motorola C550 and indeed the phone has disprove their theory. Their different brands of phones they bought even after several months i bought my are completely off use now and my motorola C550 is still perfect interms of functioning. Perhaps the only trivial comment i have to make is that the games are only two which give limited choice for entertainment. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

Ok i know the camera is not as good as the samsung, but if u play around with the image while taking the picture it can actually come out very nice. I also think that the polyphonic ringtone is the best, if u download a ringtone from a certain site then the sound is great. im very happy with this phone and at the moment i wouldnt exchange it. If i wanna take a good picture, then i take it with my camera. Its after all a cell phone not a cell camera, the camera is just there to personalise ur phone a bit. Very impressed.

I really dont know what others are talking about. My reply to; The screens too small: well u can see how big the screen is next time dont bother buying it!And when taking pictures hid the softkeys its better. The cameras foggy: Try wiping the camera with a cloth you had it for months duh! Its makes a noise when i take a cord out: Put it on silent or vibrate u nutcase! The alarm still goes off loud! If keeps turning itself off: Take out and reinsert the battery and sim. The battery doesnt last long: For god sake a mobile doesnt have to be on 24/7 y dont you turn it off when you dont need it. The phone wont let me send photos to my computer: next time get a usual camera, then get the photos put onto camera. Question to ask yourself: Have i spent time reading the booklets? Am I on the best Tariff? do i spend too much time on my phone? Did i actually read the brief intro to the phone before i made the purchase? Have i downloaded something that can affect the way my phone works? Am i stupid enough to know when i have run out of credit. It does everything its meant to make and take txts and phone calls next time buy a better phone!

I bought this phone 6 months ago and have had no trouble with it at
all. It's reliable, effective does the job well. As for the camera, thats
a different story. The camera itself is quite good. In the right lighting
conditions it can take quite good shots, however the biggest let down
is that the camera is not suited to the 4096 colour display. The shots
cannot reach their full potential. Also, sometimes you may not be able
to hear the phone ring because its not incredibly loud. It's only some
tones that this is for. Apart from those minor issues The phone is quite
good for someone on a budget. My next phone will be the NEC E616v. Hope

I loved this phone at first - but quite quickly became somewhat disenchanted. I will say it's a great cameraphone for the MONEY (it's the cheapest camphone available in Australia), but if you have a bit of dosh to splosh then buy something else. Reason? The screen is tiny - one cannot view the whole picture when you receive an MMS, one must scroll up and down - the "softkeys" obscure the bottom of the screen. The only way to view the image in full is to transfer the image itself to the memory and then select "Hide Softkeys" - I cannot fathom why the hide softkeys function is not available when viewing the MMS in your inbox. Also, just in general the screen is very small and not of great resolution. I had major problems with the first handset, it had three visits to the workshop in the first month, then now 4 months on all my RAM has disappeared - Motorola replaced it. There was also a problem with the scroll bars being blotchy which Motorola could not seem to be able to trace. The replacement handset seems fine. Maybe I just got a lemon with the first, even the buttons on this second one are easier to press, but a friend also had his Mot V70 going back to the factory within the first 2 weeks too - I've read Moto phones have quality control/reliabilty probs. Don't get me wrong - I like this phone - a lot, and it has a LOT of features for such little $$$ and is funky to look at - I just now find the screen resolution and size, and camera quality to be annoying. Cam qual is OK, but...just OK. For example what camera turns a green top blue? But it is an entry level camphone. Not the easiest to text on. MOTOROLA TAKE NOTE: HOW DARE YOU MAKE CAMERAPHONES WHICH YOU REFUSE TO SUPPORT WITH SOFTWARE TO TRANSFER IMAGES TO PC? What's the point in that? It's a fun phone, light and cool - but not without some fairly serious drawbacks, but if money is tight, and PC connectivity is not an issue, then go it.

Bought the phone over the web and hadn't seen or tested it in real life,
so it's my own fault, I guess. Annoying things aplenty: I use the phone
as an alarm clock and leave it to be charged beside the bed every night.
I get up early, and I have learned to stuff the phone under the mattress
before unplugging the power cord. Reason: The phone gives off a loud,
annoyoing bleepeleep-sound when I remove the power cord. Can't figure
out if I can turn it off. Actually, the phone announces its presence
loudly and blatantly when I plug in the power cord, unplug the power
cord, touch different keys, turn it off, turn it on, and so forth. A
real PITA. I have had the phone for 5 months or so, and most of the
buttons and the navigation thingy in the middle are worn through in
the lacquer. Bad production quality, simply. The camera is a disappointment.
This is my first camera phone and of course I did not expect supreme
quality. However, I did expect to be able to recognize what I take pictures
of, but I can't. I think I may have taken less than a dozen pictures
with this thing - it's bloody worthless. The pictures measure something
like 8 x 10 pixels, the images are dark and fuzzy and not worth a damn.
Keys: This phone may be all right for midgets with tiny fingers, but
for a grown man it is quite poor. I only use my little finger when dialling,

This phone is perfect for what it needs to do. While the screen may
be smallish on size, it only affects the operations when trying to view
pictures. The navigation is excellent, considering it is highly customisable
(you can make menu options appear in any order, and even change the
quick-link from the soft-buttons). If you actually turn up the volume,
the ringtones are rather loud. Managing to hear it clearly 50m away,
and even using it as an alarm-clock to wake me up, I'm heavily reliant
on it and it's yet to let me down. As for the vibrating feature: I've
left this in my pocket and have felt it every time it's vibrated. There's
also the great feature where it vibrates every 5mins after you get a
txt/call until you respond, just incase you don't realise! Ultimately,
in the end, it is a good phone. You simply need to know how to work
it (and it seems like there are quite a few people here whom don't).
Yet, considering I knew how to work it fine after having it 30mins,
I don't see what anyone else's problem is.

Like the rest of you I'm struggling to figure this phone out.....I'm
winning the battle I think!. Looked at other forums and found that the
only site you can download anything to help you download the photos
to your PC is on the Hong Kong site. You apparently need the right drivers!
This phone should have the software with it or have the vendors tell
you this camera phone comes without it! Otherwise it ain't too bad for
my first camera phone!

this phone is quiet good for it's price. Camera, polophonics, colour
screen, MMS.. what more could you really expect for 150 dollars australian.
Although the photos dont look that good on the screen when you upload
them onto the computer they are quite good. Anyone who thinks it's hard
to navigate around the menu must have rocks in their heads. It's easy
when you have used it for a week or so... like anything you get used
to it. If your on a tight budget this is a reasonably good phone!

Maybe in Hong Kong we have been spoiled and have higher requirements
of our mobiles but this is definitely what you call a bad phone unless
you just want a phone to make & receive calls. For those of us use to
the Nokia, its a nightmare to navigate, the logic for the navigation
is just non-existent. The screen quality is poor, ringtone barely audible,
the vibrating alert useless. The only good thing is the price but even
for me its not value for money. Advice...invest double the price in
a better phone or buy an old model phone for calls & msgs.

I just got one of these phones yesterday, the reason being that i wanted
a camera phone. I'm quite impressed with the phone - it does what it
says on the tin. It is slightly annoying to navigate but i think that
most of these reviewers are a little stupid and couldn't operate a water
tap. It's a little slow but not like an old computer, the tones are
quite good, but some are quiter than others. The camera is ok, maybe
a little poor in quality but the zoom makes up for that. I'm maybe a
little dissapointed, and i miss my nokia, but overall it isn't a bad
phone if you have a little patience.

Well~ I have already submitted a review last month with 2 star rating,
i would like to change it, becuz after using it for one more month,
i find it too annoying. First, the ring tone, is far too weak to listen,
and i cannot feel the vibration too, that means i always have more than
10 missed call everytime when i take out my phone from my pocket. And
the camera, the quality when u see in the computer is not bad, but it
take photo after around 2 second when u press the button, and the start
up for the camera is so slow, that i always miss some great shot~ The
monitor, i didn't expect the monitor to be good at this price, but not
that bad. When i compare the 4096 color screen with other phone, i found
the pixels are really big, and the word are extremely blurred. Finally,
if u want to buy a phone that is cheap with camera and color screen,
buy this one. But i dun recommend ppl to buy cheap phone with camera
and color screen. if u dun have the money, but a cheap phone with black
and white screen. If u have the money, buy a 65000 color screen. Buying
a rubbish color screen and rubbish camera will just make you unhappy~

i brought back this phone a few months ago, it is working quite well,
the receive is quite good.. but there is a few things that is really
bad first, the vibration is really weak, u cannot feel it unless its
on ur hand. Second, the volume of the ring tone is not enough, i always
missed the call and it cause a lot of troubles. Third, the little screen
is far too small, u cannot see the wallpaper as it is almost totally
covered by the network provider, clock, line number 1..... All in all,

Given the price (Free on everything pay monthly) OK I suppose - in fact
the best reception where I live than any other phone. And I've had a
few... BUT: Whilst I can hear everyone else perfectly, they can only
hear a Dalek on the other end. Apparently continuously breaking up.
Or perhaps they just don't like me.... Texting is truly an abismal experience
- Motorola seem to have succeeded in ensuring you have to go through
the most complicated set of key strokes possible to write and send one.
Well done Moto - you've won that one. So basically, don't buy one. If
you need a cheap phone go for a low end Nokia ro Sony Ericsson. And
don't think you'll be losing out on a camera, the one on a C550 might
as well not be there.

images clicked using the C550 to a PC via the data port. You can only

can be done. But it can not be done and there is no mention about it
