The Apple iPhone SE gives you the power of the latest iPhone 6s in the compact and stylish body of the iPhone 5s! It's a winning combination, and the fact that this is the most affordable iPhone for years makes it a top buy. We love the ultra-premium & ultra-lightweight design, the super-fast M9 processor and the brilliant iSight camera with 4K video recording. The only room for improvement is the non-HD screen. The SE will launch on 31 March, with pre-orders from 24 March.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 launched in the UK on 11th March. Building on the Galaxy S6, the S7 features an all-metal water-resistant design with a 5.1 inch Quad HD display. It uses Samsung's new super-fast 8-core Exynos 8 processor, and includes a microSD card slot, allowing the memory to be expanded to 200GB. A new dual pixel camera enables even better low-light photography, and the new selfie flash lets you capture perfect shots of yourself and your friends. An enhanced 3,000mAh battery keeps the phone going for longer. The S7 is already priced very competitively for a flagship phone, and we don't hesitate to recommend it.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 brings premium metal-and-glass looks to Samsung's winning formula of a high-spec Android smartphone. The S6 features a stunning quad-HD AMOLED screen, an 8-core processor, enhanced cameras, Android Lollipop and a wealth of other features. The only things holding it back are the lack of expandable memory, and the rather average battery life.
The Edge version of the Samsung Galaxy S7 launched in the UK on 11th March. Although it costs £100 more than the standard S7, it offers a larger screen - 5.5 inches instead of 5.1 inches. And of course, the screen is curved at the left and right edges, making the Galaxy S7 Edge the best-looking smartphone of 2016, in our view. With an 8-core processor, expandable memory, superb new camera and a monster battery, it's arguably the best phone all-round.
The HTC 10 introduces a new style for 2016, but one that makes it look much like a Samsung - at least from the front. It's a beautifully crafted phone, but not one that offers distinctive looks. Inside, it's a high performer, with a Snapdragon 820 processor, good memory, a USB Type-C connector, and an impressive Quad HD screen. The front camera is superb, although the main camera doesn't match it. It it was priced more competitively it would earn a 5 star rating from us here at S21.
The Apple iPhone 6s has a faster A9 processor, improved cameras, pressure-sensitive touchscreen, and is less prone to bending. It's basically an updated iPhone 6, and comes in new colour options too. As always, Apple has delivered a good product, but it's vastly over-priced.
The iPhone 6 finally catches up with Android and comes with a big 4.7 inch screen and NFC cashless payments. It's probably the most beautiful, most practical, most desirable phone in the marketplace in 2014.
Samsung's affordable J Series phones are rolling out in 2015, and the J5 is a mid-range model with an attractive slimline design and solid, mid-range capabilities. Its best features are its HD AMOLED screen, decent camera and battery life. Watch out for the smallish 8GB of memory though.
The Galaxy A3 from Samsung is a mid-range phone with a premium metal design. It's compact, ultraslim, and exceptionally light in weight, and is quite possibly the nicest-looking phone you can own in this price category.
The Sony Xperia Z5 has fixed the overheating problems that plagued the Z3+. It brings a new, less flashy design with a fingerprint sensor built into the power button, and sports an upgraded 23 megapixel camera too. It's one of the fastest smartphones available, with an excellent screen and plenty of memory.
