Miele WKB130 review
|Review: January 2017|
In a nutshell: Launched at the end of 2016, the Miele WKB 130 is an interesting addition to the German manufacturer's W1 series of high-end washing machines. It's just like Miele's other premium models, but cheaper! Designed to give 20 years of service, this machine is one of the best-built and quietest models you can buy.
Today's best buy: Miele WKB 130 from Co-op Electrical (£695.00)
No Miele washing machine could ever be described as cheap, but the W1 range is even more expensive than the popular W models. Until now, that is. Intriguingly, the Miele WKB 130 W1 is priced at a RRP of £749, instead of the £1,000 or more we've come to expect.
Looking at the machine, there's nothing to indicate any downgrading in build quality. The size and weight are the same as the WKB120, and the enamelled front is scratch, acid and corrosion resistant. Cast-iron counterweights keep the machine steady during the spin cycle, and account for the heavy 94kg total weight. The appliance is deeper than some, so check the available depth prior to installation. The finish is Lotus White with a Chrome finish door ring.
The control panel is slanted, and has the usual Miele look with a rotary dial to select programmes, and buttons for selecting options. These include the Water Plus setting to add an extra rinse. You can adjust the spin speed, and programme a delayed start. The LED display shows wash settings, a countdown timer, and cap dosing information.
The appliance includes a child safety lock and a PIN code to restrict access to the machine.
Washing and performance
The WKB130 has a sizeable 8kg load capacity, making it suitable for a good-sized family wash. It can automatically detect smaller loads and adjust settings itself.
The available wash programmes include Cottons, Delicates, Dark Garments/Denim, Shirts, Woollens, a Minimum Iron setting, plus a 20-minute Express 20 option for freshening up. Separate Rinse and Spin options are also available, as well as a Pre-Wash. A Pre-ironing option, not available on cheaper models, uses Miele's soft honeycomb drum and steam to smooth garments prior to finishing.
The maximum spin speed is 1600rpm, reducing drying time significantly, and giving the appliance an A rating for spin performance.
The WKB130 is compatible with CapDosing, which adds special detergents, fabric conditioners and additives using single-use portioned capsules. You can of course also use conventional detergents.
The energy rating of this model is very high at A+++. Low temperature washing is available, with 20 degree and cold wash options. Its water usage is low too, although we recommend using the Water Plus option to ensure a clean rinse.
The machine's ProfiEco motor is incredibly quiet, and this is one of the quietest washing machines you can buy.
Miele's reputation for reliability is legendary. Miele's testing procedure simulates 20 years of use, with 10,000 operating hours, or 5,000 washes.
Having said that, Miele products can be expensive to repair if they do go wrong.
Conclusion - highly recommended
Miele washing machines are designed to work well, and to go on working wash after wash. They're expensive to buy, but they have top wash and spin performance, and are easy to use. And they're built to last, so in the long run you can expect to save money.
The WKB130 gives you more than the base models - in particular it's quieter, and enables cap dosing. With a RRP of £749, we think it's fantastic value, and have no hesitation giving this our top 5-star rating.

Am i right in thinking to use your own detergent, you need to buy an additional piece of equipment for the dispenser drawer?
