Miele WDA101 review
|Review: September 2015|
In a nutshell: The WDA101 is Miele's most affordable washing machine in its 2015 range. Although expensive by most standards, we think it offers excellent value for money because of its expected durability and reliability. It's a very energy efficient and quiet machine too. It's also very easy to use.
Miele's washing machines have a very traditional look, but the WDA101 is brought into the modern world with an LED display. It's still a very safe design though, and will fit well into a traditional kitchen. Its chrome door lends it a premium feel, but there's nothing flash about the WDA101.
The machine is solidly built with a scratch-resistant enamelled front, and the controls are easy to use. A simple rotary dial lets you select a programme, and the LED display shows the time remaining, plus basic status information. There are also some handy warning lights for common problems. It couldn't really be much simpler to operate.
Washing and performance
The machine has a 7kg washing capacity, which is just enough for family washing, but not overly generous. The machine detects smaller loads and uses less water and electricity as appropriate. The machine includes automatic cleaning of the dispenser drawer at the end of every wash programme.
There's a decent choice of wash programmes, including an Express 20 programme for quick freshen-ups. Other programmes include Cottons, Dark garments, Shirts, Wool (hand wash), Delicates and Spin.
Maximum spin speed is a moderate 1400rpm, which is enough to get your clothes reasonably dry, and carries a B efficiency rating.
The WDA101 features Miele's patented honeycomb drum, designed to provide a soft surface which protects your clothing during washing.
The machine is very energy efficient, with a rating of A+++. That's one step up from last year's equivalent model. The machine includes low-temperature and even cold washes. The machine is quiet too, both during washing and spinning, although it can't match the best machines from AEG or Bosch in this regard.
If there's one thing Miele is known for, it's reliability. All Miele washing machines are tested for 10,000 operating hours - the equivalent of 20 years of use.
Conclusion - a very safe buy
Miele is known as the Rolls-Royce of washing machines, and the WDA101 is a good illustration of that. It's a machine with very traditional, but smart looks, and is built to be reliable and straightforward to use. It may not have the greatest load capacity, nor the fastest spin speed, nor even the highest energy efficiency in its class, but it's a solid no-nonsense machine that's built to last, and should give you years of trouble-free use.
It's the cheapest model in the company's 2015 range with a RRP of £649. The WDA111 is the same, but with a slanted control panel. The WDA101 is recommended for built-under installations.

We had an old Miele which allowed us to set a time clock to start it at night.
Is there any way this can be achieved with this modern machine with touch buttons?
Or must the power be on to start it running?

Have used two different Miele washing machines. Given any option, I would NEVER use anything else. The first set (washing machine and tumble dryer) lasted us over 20 years, despite the fact that we moved ten times and the (heavy, front-loading) washing machine was dropped off a truck...it did bend the foot a little, but it carried on working fine. We gave the set to friends when we left and it carried on working...the only thing we did was change the drive belt before we gave it away. It was still working fine, and getting the belt was easy.
We bought that because the salesman said he used them and asked How much is a load of clothing worth? It was true - our clothes lasted and lasted...this was highlighted on moving to the US, and having to use a top-loader. Our beautiful clothes started disintegrating immediately! As soon as we could, we got another Miele set, and went back to loving our clothes safely, knowing we'd have a long-term relationship! I often get second hand clothes that others get rid of to thrift stores due to the fact that they have to be dry-cleaned. I do not dry clean...horrid chemicals! I wash wool jackets and silk everything in my Mieles, and other than a few woollens that prefer to be dried flat, have had great success. They seem expensive till you see how much they are saving you!!!

Solid, silent and efficient. Eco programmes are longer because they save energy. Despite being a basic model (therefore affordable in price) it offers a handful of washing options and important technical information. Get one if you can.

WDA101 arrived today and it's a dream. The shock absorbers and drum mounts are the same as a car. It's a very quiet machine and I love the countdown display on each programme which shows time remaining for cycle. I used the "express 20" wash which is nice and quick if you're in a hurry. The 1400 spin is perfect and my clothes were not creased at all.
My last machine was a Miele and lasted 21 years. I bought it from Tullys in Enfield UK. I now live in Italy and took delivery today. I'm really really pleased with this machine. All my household appliance are Miele. Yes you do pay more, but you'll have a trouble free experience. I can't praise Miele enough.
