LG Venus review

 Review: February 2008

Rating: 5 stars

In a nutshell: A dual-screen touch-sensitive user interface combined with a full numeric keypad makes the LG Venus cool but practical too.

Review

With the European launch of the LG KF600 (LG Venus) on 11 February 2008, LG have proven themselves once again to be at the forefront of innovation in user interface design. At first glance the KF600 looks just like any other slide phone - the top half has a high quality TFT screen, with touch-sensitive navigation buttons below, and when you slide it open, the full numeric keypad is revealed beneath. But what's really interesting is that the touch-sensitive navigation keys are context sensitive virtual keys. In other words, the function of the keys changes depending on what you're trying to do with the phone. LG call this an InteractPad™.

This makes the Venus a kind of hybrid between a conventional slide phone and a touchscreen-driven phone like the LG Viewty or the Apple iPhone. This is a brilliant idea - LG have realised that people love touchscreen user interfaces, but find them awkward for tasks like texting. The Venus offers the best of both worlds. Take a look at the picture on the right to see how this works in practice. The pictures show the upper screen and the lower touchscreen - look how the touchscreen changes depending on whether you are navigating the top-level menu, playing music or using the camera. We really like the concept, and it works well in practice. A neat feature is that you can turn the phone sideways and use the screen and user interface in landscape mode.

OK, let's take a tour of the rest of the phone. It's quite a chunky phone to hold, but by no means a brick, and not too heavy either. The touchscreen looks great in the glossy black finish, but it's also available in pastel pink, shiny pink and wine red. It's definitely a phone with wow! factor looks. LG have paid some attention to detail here, because the Venus comes with a good choice of themes that appear in all menu, icons, wallpaper and other user interface features.

They haven't skimped on features either. Although the Venus isn't a 3G phone, it has most of the multimedia features that you could want. The main display is a 262k colour TFT screen with 320 x 240 pixels and the lower screen (the touchscreen) has 240 x 176 pixels. So in total the display has 240 x 496 pixels available, making it almost as big as the iPhone. The camera is rated at 3 megapixels and can't match the best camera phones currently available, but is perfectly good enough for snaps. The camera can also record video clips.

The music player works very well. Music quality is good and the main speaker is loud! The touchscreen interface really does work well here - you can access all of the music functions without opening the slide. Support for a Bluetooth-enabled stereo headset is included and there's plenty of memory available for storing music: the microSD card slot can accept cards up to a whopping 8 Gbytes, which is enough for around 2,000 songs. We're pleased to see the inclusion of an FM radio too.

Connectivity is good, with support for both Bluetooth and USB. Battery life seems to be normal for this type of phone - you can expect to get a few days of normal use between charges. There's good support for games too, with the dual screen reminding us of the Nintendo DS.

We've criticised some of LG's touchscreen designs in the past (most notably the LG Chocolate), but we are actually big fans of LG, because they aren't afraid to innovate and most of the time their designs just get steadily better. The LG Venus might be the best yet (although perhaps the higher-spec Viewty still has the edge.)

I have owned my pink LG Venus for almost two years now and it has been very reliable. It had never had any technical problems and the screen has never frozen. The camera is very good quality and the videos, however short, is still a nice touch. The only problem was that the chrome sides of the phone deteriorated and is chipped.

This phone lasted me just over a year and in terms of features was extremely good. My biggest problem was that after only three months it was scratched all over and the paint was badly coming off. You may think that this is de to my own fault and that I didn't look after it properly, but it was more the fact that it damaged extremely easy. I have just bought the lg pop also in black, and so far it is proving even better, and is not damaged at all in any way.

This phone is pretty good. I had the env2 but liked the look of thisnone so me and my sister switched. I've had to go in a few times from just when I had it. My sister got like 3 of them. And I'm on my second. This phone has enough to keep me interested. And it lasts long enough to hold on. But the store gives me new ones for little bugs. I recently have been waking up to it being already on, when I turn it off at night. This phone always gives me suprises, and they're not always the best. Bit I drop it alot, and it might have something to do with the bugs, but it's pretty sturdy. It's overall an okayyy phone

Got this phone refurbished for $100 after tax, with $50 included airtime. Due to the prepaid nature of the non-contract, the 50 bucks didn't go too far. Unsolicited texts started coming in, 5 minutes after activating it. Telus was able to reprogram it, not to accept text messages. Got it on a reasonable rate plan. Same day, touch screen burned out... leaving me unable to add contacts, etc, etc. What a piece of junk. Only had it six days... pretty impressive. Oh yeah, and dirt got between the slider and the keypad, resulting in some cool looking scratches. My ancient LG flipphone was 1000x tougher than this piece... but it's battery died, and the venus seemed cheaper than re-activating the old one, and replacing the battery. Live and learn.

I absolutly loved my venus. I had the black one. It was a very reliable and easy to use phone. Cudos to those who developed it. I accidentaly washed mine. It was in one of my pockets and I didnt realise it until the washer had completly filled up with water and soap and began it's cycle. I got it out saw suds and water under the screen thought for sure I had ruined my phone. So I set it on the counter to dry out and see what the damage was. After about a week sitting there my husband had plugged it in charging it and it all of a sudden just came on. Worked just as good as before. So good someone stole it from my house during a party a few months later. Wish I still had that phone, I replaced it with the blackberry storm and we all know what problems it having.

I loved the phone when I got it, but like all things new, the honeymoon period was over, as the phone is great depending what network you use. I was on T-Mobile and my signal was not very good in the house, in fact I had to go out side to send and recieve sms & calls. So changed to another network 02, no probs! The only thing that has put me off this phone is that I cannot change the message, as it keeps saying 'You have mail', which I hate and I wanted to put my own message tone, which this phone doesnt let you do. You are stuck with that boring rington for your messages! Apart from that, I think the phone was great, and not alot of people had that style of phone, as I hate to be like the rest of the sheep!

It's too bad this rating system doesn't have 0 stars, because I would use it. My husband has this phone and it constantly drops calls. Also, it will show full signal when closed, and then drop 2-3 signal bars when you open, dial, and send. His phone doesn't ring consistently. I estimate he doesn't get about 1/3 of his calls. I would not recommend this phone to anyone, and if someone told me they wanted one, I would tell them to find something else!

I HATE my LG Venus and I've LOVED my previous LG phones, but the Venus has got to go! I've had it for a year and it's been replaced 4 times. (Using the warranty with the cell phone provider they won't replace it with a different phone)The touch screen doesn't work properly. If I press the button at the bottom left, the button at the top left reads that it was pushed. There is a delay when sliding the phone up to answer a call and when the call is actually connected. Not to mention if you accidentally bump the phone and it closes on you and then you've just hung up on your phone call. I've had several issues with the screen. Sometimes the pictures flip upside-down and backwards. Like and mirror image flipped upside-down and the color distorts. The latest issue is the screen is black; nothing at all. I'm not dropping my phone or getting it wet so I'm at a loss as to why it keeps doing this accept for poor engineering. I would not buy this phone.

The LG KF600, otherwise known as the Venus, is certainly an attractive phone. I opted to buy this one because of its versatility; it’s a two way touch screen, the upper half being (320x240 pixels) and the lower half (240x176 pixels), an impressive size considering the current retail price at £79.97 from Tesco. Sliding up the phone reveals a keypad for those keen on texting; I had read that touch screens weren’t always favourable for heavy texters, but this phone seemed to have the best of both worlds. A modern, stylish looking phone, yet easy and practical to use too. The phone has many admirable features such as the 3 megapixel camera, the loud music player, Bluetooth, Infrared, FM radio, Java games, Voice recorder, Micro SD card slot, WAP enabled. I would say the best feature about this phone, for me personally, is the cosmetics of it. Which doesn’t really say an awful lot for the phone itself. Yes, it does have numerous features, but nothing superior to that of any other bog standard phone nowadays. I have also found a great number of faults with the phone; I’ve noticed sporadically when making calls, the dialling tone wont kick in. Meaning I don’t know when the person has answered the phone, until hearing a bewildered “hello?” down the other end. Worse still, sometimes the ringing of the phone is audible, but when the person does answer, I can’t hear them! These unreliable features are a little disheartening, as I’ve only had the phone for a few months. I’ve also found the camera to be very slow when taking pictures, having to hold the phone still for around 3-4 seconds for the photo to appear on the screen un-blurred. The phone in general is slow…being relatively unresponsive at times and incredibly delayed. The ever dreaded screen freeze also occurs one to two times every month or so…And the battery life of the phone is not too great either; I can fully charge it one day, then by the next day the battery can be down to 1 bar again, meaning im reluctant to use features such as the internet, games or mp3 whilst im out. The standard memory on the phone isn’t fantastic being able to handle only a handful of photos before there is no memory left, although it must be said that there is room for expansion with the SD slots. All in all, I wouldn’t recommend this phone to people who are after a quality phone. Too many problems have occurred and given the chance again I would invest in something a bit more reliable for an extra 50 quid or so.

This phone has given me way too many troubles. I'm now on my third one, within just 9 months due to the top slider coming off the tracks and this one is started to come loose when I slide it up. The chipped paint is also a problem but just one of the many. I dont recieve half my calls and I'd say about 70% of my text messages do not send when I have full bars of service. The touch screen is delayed. As well as the camera and the touch features that go with that. I'm also a huge texter so it wasnt exactly the right choice for me. Verizon refuses to give me a different phone even though the venus has been offically discontinued.

I've had this phone for about six months and to be hoenst, absolutely loved it up until recently, since about feburary things have started to go down hill. The chrome paint, as many have mentioned, is chipping majorly, but i could deal with that. also, not through any sort of abuse or misuse, the upper left hand corner of my screen has started to lift away from the rest of the phone. in the past week alone, I have gone from being generally happy with my phone to seriously considering getting a new one. in continually freezes, the touch screen is always behind and just yesterday, it decided that it wasn't going to charge unless I sat there and held it. I've also been having a lot of trouble with texts not sending for some reason, it dying constantly, even though I charged it for the full time when i first got it, the battery has quickly deteriorated, which is something I have noticed with all the LG phones I have, the batteries are great for a couple months, then nex t thing you know, they have to be charged constantly. I think i still do love my phone, if it would just work the way it did a month ago, i loved it then, and hopefully I can get this fixed.

alright, i've had the LG venus for about 8 months (got it last june) and overall, i can honestly say it's just okay. the downsides are as follows; within a month of buying the phone, the paint on the sides scratched off, i tried repairing it with nailpolish, but just a heads up, it doesn't help it. second, yes, i've dropped the phone a couple of times. who doesn't? but for the past couple of months the CAMERA on the phone will take atleast a minute to upload, due to me dropping it (i've literally only dropped it on hard ground 4 or less times) and, also, i can't zoom in anymore, reason being (i think anyways) because i've dropped it. thirdly, the touch screen. it's a nice little touch screen, i'm glad it doesn't take up the whole screen, but it does like to spaz from time to time. i'll touch the screen to go to messaging, for example, and it will spaz, take me to messaging, then right back to the home page. this happens quite often. another minor glitch i find in th e LG venus is that a lot of my messages seem to fail. i also find it a disappointment how the message inbox and outbox can only hold 50 messages each; buying the phone i was unaware and i was hoping to have more space for my messages, considering i'm a freak texter. now, i know this isn't the phones fault, but whenever i try to cancel the message to go back to my home page, it tells me the message cannot be canceled, meaning i have to take out the battery each time and restart the phone. ooookay. onnn the upside, the camera (when it does load) takes very good pictures. i'm usually overall impressed with the quality of them; considering it's a phone. i also love the SIZE of the phone. it's not too big, perfect to fit in your jean pockets or your tight sweater pockets (unlike the LG voyager, for example, which is monstrous). the phone gets very good reception when talking on it, also. i've been in the middle of no where and gotten decent reception with the venus. anywho, thats about it for me and my experiences with the phone; but some words of advice..only buy it if you feel lucky enough to get along with it!

Had this phone for a few months now and it is excellent. Easy to use, clear calls and easy texting. Music plays well and the radio is very clear. Camera is not the fastest but I use a real camera for photos anyway. The LG software does not connect using the PC, but the phone itself and the memory card appear as separate drives in Windows Explorer - simply drag and drop. I use software to extract a short piece from my favourite music tracks and use them as custom ringtones. Register at LGs website and you'll have access to ringtones and themes etc. Overall an excellent phone!

At first i thought this phone was great but after a few weeks the novelty of it seriously wore off, my biggest gripe with it was the fact that the battery would go from 1 bar 2 totally dead in the space of about 10 mins. My pc didnt like the format the phone pics were in so when i tried to put pics onto my computer they would show up as tiny slithers. The camera was very delayed so by the time it had finally taken the pic every1 had got bored of waitin n moved so you'd end up with a blurry picture.I also kept having to delete messages all the time beacause of memory even though i had a substantial memory card in it. Thank god i'm rid of it now n subsequently i will be staying clear of LG phones in the future!

I've had it for 5 months, the edges are chipped and the texting is rubbish. but mostly is the fact that it broke into 2 pieces. the sliding parts are just holdng by a thread and they deny it being a manufacturing error. Its a sliding phone, i was sliding it -- its a sliding phone and it snapped!

this phone is great. I got it a while back and it has only had 2 problems. Problem #1. It sometimes freezes and you have to take the battery out then put it back in. Problem #2. Sometimes the data gets lost but when you turn it off and wait a minute then turn it back on your data is back. This only happens when you turn it off then seconds after you turn it back on. Only your songs, videos and images get wiped out. Though this review has been mentioning problems I would highly recommend this Phone. Also the camera cup e better

I would not recommend this phone..The silver paint on the sides chips off very quickly, and now the paint is chipping off the number buttons..The Verizon guy said this is a con about the Venus, but is considered wear and tear and they will not replace it. I now have trouble figuring out what number and letter is what. Very annoying! Also, the battery life could be better, and to change the volume on the side of the phone requires an abnormal force of pressure, and often just won't change..

I've had the Venus ever since August, and as everyone says the paint DOES chip off really bad if you don't keep it in the pink case provided. Also, after about three months of having this phone the first time, it broke completely in half! I was in the middle of a text and it the front sprung off! I hadn't done anything crutial to the phone to make it break as it did. Although, ever since I got it replaced I haven't had any major issues with the phone. It isn't an amazing phone but overall I do like it.

Some issues for folks with big fingers, the buttons are too small. But all in all I like(d) this phone. Never experienced anything freeze or so. But is really heavy in battery use. great Camera. And ONE THING I DON´T UNDERSTAND. Why is it not possible to choose your won sound for receiving messages. Only 10 stupid standard sounds !!!???

Rubbish phone in my opinion and now switched to a Sony Ericsson W760i which is outstanding.

had this phone for around 2 months now. It's not a bad phone, looks nice although the paint chips away so easily and mine's forever getting scratched. I see lots of people had a problem when replying to a text, it only gives multimedia option. I had that too but don't worry, it will only be like this for about a week, then it gives you the 'text' option. It will only let me hold about 2 songs without a memory card but i'll soon be getting a 4GB one and i'm hoping it will work in it, it should do. Overall this phones not too bad, but there are better one's out that come at this ones price range.

The phone seems ok cosmetically, and I liked the idea of a touch screen, but I just had my first one replaced because I would not get about 50% of my calls. After a month of back and forth with verizon and putting the phone in front of them and showing them that calling the phone yeilded random results, they gave me a second phone. Now 3 weeks into a new phone and I've had the same problem. ALSO, this second phone randomly drops down to 0 bars and drops calls, then will shoot back up to full service when i close the phone. Phone seems faulty to me, and the Verizon reps are quick to take it back, so something tells me the bugs were never worked out of this one. I liked the touch-screen set up for easy answering/checking messages, but I say keep the framework, change the wiring.

After a couple months the buttons are so loud when I text it sucks! Also the silver trim on the phone started pealing and looks ugly. The touch screen is also delayed and the camera takes forever to take a picture! So it was nice for the first month then downhill from there. If you like texting don't get it!

Although i will say that if your looking to buy it for the good camera the shutter speed is pretty bad, it takes a fair 5 seconds befour the picture takes but apart from that its an awesome phone and a much needed update to my LG Chocolate, i recomend this phone to anyone. An okay phone, delayed touch screen, didn't have any problems with it for the first three months, then all of the sudden, it would freeze in the middle of writing a text. I wouldn't be able to cancel the text or even turn off the phone, so i had to resort to taking out the battery. Went to verizon and they replaced it, no questions, however three months has passed again and i have encountered the same problem. I hope they'll just give me a small discount on another phone rather than replace this one, i don't want it anymore.
