LG U8360 Review

Phone rating:

Review: November 2005.

The LG U8360 is a 3G clamshell phone that is available on the 3 network and supports all of 3's video mobile services including video calling. It's the first phone from LG with Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

It's the best of the 3G LG phones so far. Not only does it have Bluetooth, but it also comes with an expandable memory card and an upgraded 1.3 megapixel camera. These put it a couple of steps ahead of the older LG phones. The U8360 also has a new improved user interface that is graphically driven. Add in capabilities like a 262k colour screen, an MP3 player and a high-quality video camera and you have a very good 3G phone. In terms of specification, the 8360 is on a par with high-end 3G phones like the Samsung Z300 and the Sony Ericsson V800.

Things that we don't like are the STN external display, which is hard to read outdoors, and also the high weight of the phone, although this is due to improved battery life compared with older LG handsets. The camera, although it's 1.3 megapixels isn't the best ever, especially in low light. The speaker volume is also a bit too low. Apart from that it's an excellent phone. Well done LG! The LG U8380 improves upon the design with a TFT external display and 3D stereo sound.

Features of the LG U8360 include:

  • Supports all 3's video mobile services: video calling, video messaging & downloading video clips
  • Internal display: TFT, 262,000 colours, 220 x 176 pixels
  • External display: STN, 65,000 colours, 96 x 96 pixels
  • 1.3 megapixel camera
  • Video camera (VGA resolution - 640 x 480 pixels)
  • Windows Media Player (MP3/video playback)
  • Speakerphone
  • 64-voice polyphonic ringtones
  • Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, Email
  • Java games
  • Memory: 32 Mbytes with expandable TransFlash memory card
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB
  • WAP 2.0 browser
  • Triband + 3G
  • Talktime: 220 minutes
  • Video calling: 147 minutes
  • Battery standby: 221 hours
  • Weight: 132g

I echo what Javhaa (allegedly) from Mongolia says: "Reviewed by Javhaa from Mongolia on 11th Jan 2007 I have bought it few days ago. Everythings ok. But i couldn't connect it to the computer. Everytime syncronization failed. I think there is wrong CD in the box. So i'm looking for good software for Windows Vista. Buttons are not good for texting. They are very slow. I don't want to wait for next letters. Texting speed is slower than me." Its PAINFULLY SLOW a lot of the time. Texting is horrendous. Ive had to adapt my texting style, ie to text at a slower pace, or the phone doesnt keep up. When you write long texts (ie 4 texts long or more) it gets STUPIDLY SLOW. The longer your text the slower the response. Also I cant find where the loudspeaker is??? Despite it being bale to do video calls (which I hate anyway) an obviously using loudspeaker for that, I cant find where to use it on normal calls... Pretty sure it doesnt have it. Ludicrous. Going back to texting its annoying that the phone cant just keep your text stored if you want to do something else (though you can access the menu whilst texting), you either have to actively save it or quit and lose your text. Stick to Nokias or Sony Ericsons.

LG U8360 This Phone is great It features a 1.3 Megapixel camera,Expandable MicroSD memory,Bluetooth,3G video content,262k colour 2inch display & a MP3 player this is about average in todays standards. The digital camera is quiet good the screen shots are above average and theres a few extra camera functions aside including 2x digital zoom,Muli-shot,effects,flash,Self-portrait and swivel action.Theres also Video Capture the video length is unlimited But it does depend on Memory & battery life,The results were good there was pixelation & bad lighting conditions but you will expect this From any phone video unless you pay a lot of money for a higher end video phone. The screen displays were clear & vivid the internal has 262,000 colours TFT with a resolution of 176x220 pixels & measures 31x39mm (2.0inch) this is slightly Smaller than the older 3G models but has a better viewing angle. The external has 65,000 colours cstn with a resolution of 96x96 pixels this display is great for being a cstn type. The LG U8360 is afterall a good handset it works well at all its features & is easy to use it might seem a bit big & heavy but the larger the better if it had been smaller the screen would have decreased ect... i really recommend this phone and its cheap as well!

Hey! This is really great phone... It has everything I need for every day basces... I love the light its good in the dark if you have no lighting in you room... Great for hide and seek! The camera is good 1.3 mpx.. Over all this phone is way better then the Nokia N70... Why you ask? This phone has more features that you cant do on a Nokia N70.. If I had to choose it would be LG U8360... The Nokia N70 maye have a better camera but the LG U8360 has way better video calling... Its a heavy phone, although I didn't mind that too much. Overall I have had a good experience with this phone. Also the best thing is on a LG U8360 if your with 3 you can have MSN.. Go LG!

pretty good phone, but it's got some problems with the signal, i have to say that my lg has been decoded and i'm on vodafone now. battery is good, as a flashlight is excellent. as i been reading reviews i've seen that many people have problems with freezing, well i don't. i bought a transflash, got some games(about 130, not all installed), some music and it's ok, about the camera i'm not very satisfied, compared to other phones like nokia with vga camera, i have to say that it's the same because i downloaded the pictures to my pc and they were very poor quality. overall good phone and trustworthy. cheers all

I've had this phone for about a year now. At first I didn't like it - flip was annoying (was my first flip-phone) and it used to catch my hair sometimes when making a call which was quite painful. But I got used to it and looking back it is a sterdy phone jam packed with features. Its got cute little features that you don't see on spec lists, for example you can easily turn on the light at the front and use as a torch! I found the PC file transfer feature very useful for transferring songs. The memory size was fine for my needs but most people need more and can buy a T-Flash card (aka MicroSD). Speakerphone is a nice feature - Handsfree without any wires! The negative points of the phone are: I had many problems with reception and I don't know whether it was the phone's fault or my network (3G). Also, battery life was rather poor. It frequently ran out of battery and gave no warning it was low so it just turned itself off silently. Quite annoying discovering it off like that. Its a heavy phone, although I didn't mind that too much. Overall I have had a good experience with this phone.

THEY GAVE ME THE RUN AROUND FOR OVER A MONTH. THEY'RE WORSE THAN CAR SALESMEN. ONCE YOU LEAVE THE SHOP AFTER PURCHASING A PHONE, YOU'RE WORTH NOTHING MORE THAN A CRACKER. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHERE THEY GET THEIR RATINGS FROM. THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ABOUT SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC. THEY ONLY WAY I COULD GET SERIVCE WAS IF I WAS ON A CONTRACT WHICH I WASN'T. I WILL NEVER, EVER GO WITH 3 OR LG AGAIN. IT IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS THAT THEY CAN DO THIS TO "VALUED" CUSTOMERS. MY PHONE HAS BEEN OFF AT REPIARS DUE TO 'CALL REJECT' AND 'CALL DIVERT' FOR OVER 4 WEEKS. I GOT LEFT WITH A 4 YEAR OLD SONY ERICSON WHEN MY PHONE WAS LESS THAN 1 YEAR OLD. AND 3 STILL HAVE THE GUTS TO CALL THEMSELF 'NUMBER 1' IS RIDICULOUS. I URGE EVERYONE OUT THERE, CONSIDERING BUYING THIS PHONE WITH 3, DO NOT DO IT. YOU WILL SAVE YOURSELF MONTHS OF TROUBLE IF YOU DON'T GO WITH THIS PHONE/SERVICE. THIS PHONE TO ME, IS WORTH NOTHING. AS SOON AS I GET ENOUGH MONEY, I'M SWAPPING TO A DIFFERENT BRAND AND A DIFFERENT SERVICE. 3 TO ME, IS THE WORST TELEPHONE SERVICER I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. I WILL NEVER TRUST OR BE WITH THEM AGAIN.

I have had one outlined problem with this phone. I got the phone on the 12rd of November 2006, 4 days later, I saw a simble on the phone which meant that 'CALL REJECT' was on. I didn't even know what it was until I read the booklet. I called my network provider (3 - Three) and told them what happened - they made me change settings on the phone and it was fine. A couple hours later, the same thing happened, I was advised to go to a 3 shop the next day and get it repaired; as I reported the fault in under 14 days of purchase, I would be able to get a new handset. The same day I got that one; 5 hours later; IT HAPPENED AGAIN! Now, this problem happened for in excess of a month and I got NOTHING from 3. Aboslutely a WASTE of $180. I wouldn't even give this phone 1 star. I guess the only good things on the phone is: good MP3 player, OK picture/video quality, easy to press buttons/type text messages. Please, save yourself the time and DO NOT GET THIS PHONE!

Sync with Windows sometimes problematic, supplied software is poor. 3. Can't charge phone from USB 4. Battery life is average, probably quite good compared to other 3G, but needs charging at least every 2-3 days. This is despite a heavy duty Li-polymer power unit. 5. Could be slightly more compact but is a nice size to hold with quality build (unlike motorola/sony). 6. Tomtom satnav can't access the phone addressbook. 7. No voicedial.

Only gripe is that you cannot bluetooth connect another 8360. As for the weight have no problem with it. If you dont like the aerial you can get a metal stub aerial a quarter the size on the internet. Would recommend to anyone as spent ages reading reveiws and comparing loads of clamshell phones and this one came out tops.

Almost perfect except for two small points (as I see them). The 1st being the battery life not as good as promised (much better the past two 3g phones but still not that good when comparing with 2.5g phones) and the 2nd being that (unbeknown to me when I decided to purchase the phone) it doesn’t support voice tags so no voice dialling - this is a pain when using a handsfree unit in the car and had I known this I may not have opted for the LG over the V3X (past two phones being Motorola’s). I for one just assumed such an advanced phone would support voice tags and it was a real surprise when (after checking with 3 customer services that this was the case) to me (that’ll teach me – lesson learnt). Another small quirk I have found is with the supplied computer software, this being that to get the LG U880 and the computer (both of them – yes I have two) connect one has to turn off the phone then turn on again to get the com ports to work – as yet not software updates – that I can find – have been released. The above said this is a super phone and the battery life is still pretty good compared to previous 3g phones and would recommend it to anyone. Having been with 3 since they started in the UK the improvement in both handsets and reception is phenomenal and one wonders where it’s going next – no point in the phones getting smaller – not for me in any case as 1) I have normal fingers and 2) the screen needs to be of a decent size to take advantage of the 3 services and video calling.

All the features on this phone are great and most are easy to use as soon as i figured out that you upload photos through LG phone manager it was a breeze to use. But I'm having trouble working out how to use speaker phone and downloading music to the phone I've lost my guide so thats not the phones fault is it?? I love that it comes in Green because flip phones don't have changeable covers. Blue tooth was incredably easy to use and also it protects your privacy because you need to enter your code the frist time you send somthing to a person so they arn't reciving things that arn't theres. Sound quality is GREAT and the pictures are great to I havn't seen the video on my computer yet so I can't comment on that. All in all its a great buy.

It`s a perfect phone, I`m totaly loving it. It has everything you cold possibly want gfom a mobile phone and even more! The camera takes perfect pictures in daylight and in night mode the pictures are good enough too. The mp3 player is crystal clear when you listen from the stereo handsfree. Downloading to your pc and uploading to the telephone via blootooth or the USB cable is a piece of cake. I don`t know how is the 3G technology cause in Bulgaria it is still not very popular and is too expensive but I`m using the phone as a normal GSM and it totaly beats most of them with its functionality. P.S. The green version RULES !!!

In response to the people having trouble putting MP3s on the Lg u8360! When you install the software that comes with your phone onto your computer, open "LG Phone Manager". Once it opens click CONTENTS. Then on the left hand side click LG Phone - it should be under 'My Computer'. Once you loacte it (it's easy!!!) click Connect - top left hand corner under file. Once your phone connects, the phones contents are displayed into folders (just like they are displayed in 'My stuff': Images, Sounds, Videos etc. Click on Sounds and paste in the MP3 you want. If you want to put the MP3s onto your External Memory Card - the same thing applies. I believe there will be a folder for it - I have not tested it though as I do not have a memory card yet but if you have a new computer, I actually have an MMC/SD slot in the front and I can just pop cards into there, XP notices them and then I just copy things onto it that way. Now, about the phone... it's EXCELLENT! I don't know what you are all complaining about??? Me and my partner got the same phone, he got the black one and I got the lime green one. We both love our phones! If you are like me and hate fingerprints, get the green one - it has a metallic plastic and not a soft plastic like the black one. The camera is GOOD. ALL OF YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT IT NOT WORKING WELL INSIDE - PUT THE FLASH ON! YES! THE PHONE ACTUALLY HAS A FLASH!!! It's called 'LIGHT' in the options! USE IT AND STOP COMPLAINING!!! Also - go to 'WB wb' in options - you can change the place you are at: Daylight, Cloudy, INDOORS etc! When you get a phone check out all the options first before bagging it! It's really annoying especially when you think you know it all! Gr!

to start with this phone is pretty kick arse! i love 3G, because when im not near a tv, i can just watch the cricket on my phone, and when i cant afford live tv, i can get free updates of the cricket, so basically its a win win situation. the only problem is 3... the network didnt let me call out for like a week of having the phone which caused many problems for me. when they decided to call me back i had some chick that i couldnt understand which made things frustrating. bluetooth wont let me recieve media files from my dads laptop, im yet to try it on this computer to see if its just the laptop. txting is a bit difficult because on mine you cant type at a million miles p/hour, you have to wait for each letter to show up before you type in th enext, which im getting used to now. black is def the way to go colour wise, my friend has the green one... and yeah black just looks better. i love the light on the front, its absolutly blinding but its good. i was going to get the latest SE flip phone but decided against it because of the price, and this phone which is cheaper has so much more in it.. and i didnt have to change over to optus. so yes overall i would recomend this phone, its nice and lightweight for its size as compared to the Motorola V630 which is smaller and weighs about twice as much.

I don't know a lot about phones, but I do know about grammar and diction and you guys are shocking! Also this is a phone review, not a camera review, in which case it's every bit as functional as any other phone that works, you can talk to people AND hear them talking back, this truly is a marvelous invention. Don't be confused by the little holes talking, there isn't a little person trapped in there and he won't break free when you smash the phone against the floor (believe me). Naturally one should consider all the phone / camera / video camera / voice recorder / phone book / mp3 player / web browser / god only knows what else, has to offer so here goes...they're all superflous, however they are a bonus since this is a PHONE we're talking about and therefore I am grateful. If you're upset by the speed or quality of any of these extras then buy an mp3 player or a camera - bet you find they're useful for calling people! Some of you guys are spoilt, look at what you have - it's great. Seems to me like the more you get, the more you want!

Wow, When i was waiting for this fone i was thinking, Finaly a fone with a megapixel camera. But i get the fone and the camera sucks sooo bad. It takes large fotos yea, but its soo slow to turn on the cam, the fotos arent good quality at all. The only time i could get them good quality was outside wif lots of sun. So. i give the camera One star.. Not even one star. Bluetooth, Well.. this is quite ok, It transfers fast and wel yea. The thing i dont like about it is, my friends phones which have bluetooth have hte ability to brows other peoples fones which have bluetooth. This one, all you can do is send files, you cant brows others fones. oh and u can use a headset, thats it. 3 stars for the bluetooth. The T-flash looks very compact and the lil cover thingy isn't loose, i havent got a t-flash card for it yet.. but im guessing it will be good. The internet on the fone is very fast, obviously koz its 3G. umm, mp3's play ok.. not that loud though. Video calling i have only done twice, but for what i have done i say its pretty good. i like it alot. The ouside case: The part that flips doesnt feel very stable, ifu push it more bak it flips overhte other side sort of. The spinning camera thing also feels sort of loose. I have a Black one. It seems to get ALOT of fingerprints. The screen isnt very visible in the sun. Transering to a computer is good. i like that alot! Well, thats all i really have to say. I regret getting this fone. I am now stuck with it for another year! *mutters*

Upgraded from the first LG U8110. This phone is far more chunky than even the 8110. Very plastic looking. I guess it does have some better features ie, bluetooth, expandable memory etc, but I never use anyway.Usual poor network coverage, and don't know why I bothered with it. Gonna ditch it and go back to Nokia. One question, three obviously have the best call/text deals, but why are their phones so bad??? My own opinion of course but if I were you I'd steer clear!

When I saw the first LG phone on 3network with bluetooth connectivity, I was excited, but utterly disappointed when I eventually got one, because every special feature talked about actually had a flaw. I took particular interest in the camera (1.3Mpixel), but it was a total rubish. The picture quality depreciates when you increase the size of the image. The images when downloaded to a pc comes as a tiny square, relatively sharp but loses all meaningful qualities when you try to elarge the image. This is unacceptable. When you use the flash in the night it simply blanks out the image leaving a white background with a faint image behind. Synchronisation is very poor as you cannot explore the the content of the phone when synchronised. The look of the phone is good and cute but makes no difference compared to what I am used to. They may need to emulate or borrow ideas from Nokia phones.
