LG U8120 review

 Review: September 2004

Rating: 2 stars

In a nutshell: The LG U8120 is a clamshell style 3G phone available on the 3 network.

Review

It supports all of 3's video mobile services including video calling from its built-in video camera. An integrated speakerphone helps to make video calling easier. You can also record video clips to send to another phone, and download video from 3, for example news, music and sports clips. Apart from a slight external makeover, the only real difference between the LG U8120 and the LG U8110 is the increased memory size. The increased memory is a welcome addition, and the new phone does look a tad nicer, but apart from that the spec of the new phone is identical to the old, and they are the same in terms of size, weight and battery life. All our comments for the U8110 still apply.

The camera is of VGA resolution, which is standard amongst current camera phones. The high-resolution display is clear and sharp with 65k colours - ideal for viewing videos and photos. It's one of the best displays around.

Functionally, the phone has a very similar spec to the other 3G phones currently available. This includes features like an MP3 player, voice recorder, Java applications, e-mail and MMS. The only features missing are Bluetooth wireless connectivity and the advanced GPS (Global Positioning System) features available in the NEC e616 for example. It does have both infrared and USB connections though, which are a welcome addition.

Physically the phone is compact, very attractive, and is better styled than most 3G phones. Being 3G it's larger than most clamshells, but no heavier than other 3G phones. Battery life is good compared with most other 3G phones, which is a key advantage, although most users will find that they need to recharge every few days.

In summary, the 8120 is a good all-round performer, although it has now been superseded by the LG U8130 which is essentially the same but with improved software to reduce the frequency of calls dropped when moving between 3G and 2.5G regions.

Java applications got paused when flip is closed so instant messenger is not working in this way. 4. Limited built-in memory and no memory card support. 5. The camera is ok for what i use it for however it could be better. The size of the fone is good, this is because it is not too big but you know it's there without digging for it.

I really liked this phone... It's lasted me years even after buying it second hand from three. I love the three network simply because of their internet service. I does everyting I want it to do. Back to the phone... Mp3 player is good however the 32Mb memory is hardly enough for the Notorious BIG to fit in. I have always found that the fact that I can't use proper headphones really annoying. The video player is also good however I do find that it's very sensitive to the type of file to try to upload to it. The phone usually converts MP4's to MP3 for some reason and even when you use 3gp it still finds a reason to reject the files. The camera is capable of taking some good shots and the screen is great. One last thing that I dopn't like is the fact that everyting you type in the internet gets saved in your predictive text. So stuff like my eBay user name and password is saved where I don't want it to be. This is the last day of me using my U8120 as I'm upgraging to an LG U8360, which is slightly better and most of all has bluetooth. An excellent phone for someone being introduced to the 3g world and the three network.

I've been using this phone for almost two years and it's still in perfect working order. After my contract with 3 finished I unlocked the phone and am now with O2 and have no reception problems whatsoever. Downside is that becos it's a phone from 2004 the camera is not up to the standard you see in new phones. It's also much chunkier. But function-wise the phone is good so those who just want a cheap and no-fuss phone should def consider it.

My issue is with 3mobile and the LG U8120. i bought their phone outright as i was assured with their 14day moneyback guarantee. Bitterly disappointed that even though i notified them of keypad issues and returned phone ON THE DAY OF PURCHASE manager would not replace phone. She even showed me her own phone (same model) with the same problem but reasoned that 'half of all their phones are like that'. The keypad lighting was dim (even the technicians haven't be able to fix it)and only 1/2 of each button was illuminated (i have a friends U8120 which i compared mine to) apparently the lighting pad was not fitted correctly but would cost ME $50 to fix. the manager even rang nearby stores to inform them she had rejected my complaint and for them to do the same. I rang 3 support numerous times and they agreed there was a fault but sending it for service did not change the problem. I have rung and sent my to the 3 service centre 1/2dozen times with battery problems * switches itself off even when fully charged (periodic) * battery lasts 2-3 days even when only used rarely * reception is SO POOR dropouts periodically even if this phone is given to you.. GET RID OF IT i have since bought an additional phone with Vodaphone and i'm impressed both with their knowledge of plain-speaking english and service and of the reception and phone.

Useless phone, but more to the point the 3G line is useless, the customer service is terrible! they dont speak english so you end up repeating yourself a million times, then when you do get through to them their talking to you, reading off some script thing and they all say the same thing with no intention of wanting to help. I have had this LG8120 for some time now and I can honestly say it is the best phone I have ever had (and I have quite a few!). Having read others reviews about this phone having problems (none of which I have experienced), I discovered the problems arose either from using the 3 network or the phone had a bad firmware version. My LG8120 was purchased with the new firmware version (version 105) and works perfect. To get around the other problems I had the phone unlocked and now use it with my other network SIM cards (commonly Orange). Again, the phone works perfect with no problems whatsoever. I agree with everyone that the 3 network is absolutely rubbish. For starters - they advertise a ringtone or wallpaper on their '3 services' as being #2.50 each however, when you check your credit afterwards, you are shocked to find 3 had charged #5.50 per item!! 3 then have the cheek to say they charged correctly when it was queried!!! Scandelous! 3's call centre in India are also rubbish - the reps read from a script and have no clue about anything else. You are better off searching for information off the internet (which I did). My advice to others is the following - and you will find your LG 8120 will work perfect with no faults/problems whatsoever:- 1. Have your LG8120 unlocked and use the phone with another network other than 3. It has been tested with Orange and can state it is fine. 2. Ensure your LG8120 has the most up to date firmware. Version 105 and up. Any version below this is known to have firmware bugs which cause all the crashes, problems etc which others have experienced. Hope this helps!

LG The mobile that ruined 3? 3 have recently withdrawn the LG U138 the current top of the range handset. Why? well simply they don't work on the 3 network, lets forget about ringtones, mp3s etc the most basic thing a phone should do is be able to make and recieve calls simple. Well ever since the LGU8120 was lanched 3 have been flooded with complaints about dropped calls and not being able to recieve calls from fed up customers, this i believe has now come to a head with 3 replacing LG handsets with Motorola V975 ( for those people that are intitled). I have been with 3 for three years and now and although the LG is not bad is has great problems functioning a a phone Carphone warehouse replaced it 4 times and 3 at least 4 I have had a LGU8130 which displayed all the same problems. 3 seem to spend ninety percent of there time moving LG handsets around the country, I am also with T-mobile and in 6 years have never experienced any of these problems I honestly believe 3 can be a good network if people are able to use there allowance when and where they want to use it. I have also had a Nokia 7600 on 3 and was a lot better than the Lg, so come on 3 and Lg sort this mess out, can't being doing anyone one of you any good. My advice to anyone thinking of joining 3 is but reduce the tarrif to the lowest if possible don't port to 3 if you need to contact people. 1. keep your number where it is, but reduce the tarif to the owest if possible don't port to 3 if you need to contact people. 2. if you get 3 use it to make calls only whenever possible. 3. Try to avoid customer services they are rubbish. 4. Forget about LG handsets for the time being.

I would NEVER recommend this phone. Initially when I saw the phone, I bought it without hesitation and thinking twice. The phone plan was cheap and perhaps too good to be true. But my advice is "cheap things are not necessarily good". I got my phone from 3 network in Australia and had it unlocked since I was retunring home to Malaysia to use it. Less than 2 months of using it and like all the grouses that I've read on this model, my phone died on me while i was texting one day. I find it ridiculous and utter rubbish when I was told that maybe I navigate the menus 'too fast' and that contributed to the crash. One day the phone hung and like almost all the reviews I read, I took out the battery and reinserted it again. This time, all my menus language were set to Dutch and I was making calls to 'Netherlands' when in fact it was just a call to my house! I finally navigated my way around, looked up the manual and managed to change it back to English. While the phone was in this state, the front screen was blank and nothing appeared. A few days after using it, the phone finally died on me as my endless attempt to reboot the stupid damn phone just failed. Mind you, I had to send the phone back all the way to Australia to have it fixed only to find out that they LOCKED the phone back despite me paying for the phone to be unlocked previously! I had enough of this stupid phone. When my friend left for Australia, his LG phone (same model) died on him as well and it took them 2 weeks to return the phone to him and u guessed it, they locked his phone back eventho he and I both paid for the unlocking fee. 3 network is a real joke. I can't even be bothered to argue with 3network considering just how ignorant they are when it comes to replying emails. My recommendation is: u can get a better phone and certainly better customer service. Now i'm just willing to get rid of the phone (unlocked) at a cheap price since I'm pretty sure the same problems will come back again considering there are some people who had to go and get their phone fixed like 5 times.

Similar problems to everyone else, rubbish signal, no international coverage when in France & Belgium (4 friends phones with Orange, Vodaphone had no problems), unbeleivably bad customer service including having the phone put down on me by the Indian call centre operative, because she couldn't make me understand what it was that she couldn't explain!!! And now the serious stuff my phone requred a "reset" regularly over the 3 months that I had it (removing battery cos it had frozen up) and until yesteday that worked. But now it w ill not wrk at all, after the battery removal and re-insertion (this is actually in thier own litrature as a justifiable procedure) the phone will not power back up. Now I have to send it away for 5 days (because they dont count Sty & Sun in the 3 day turnaround pledge) and when I do get it back all my data will be lost including the last picture of my sttep dad tht I took a day befor3e he died of cancer. If you have ANY sense at all you will avoid "three" at all costs and avoid LG phones at all costs. I like a phrase that I saw elsewhere 3hree words "do not buy".

A Phones4U store manager admitted to me this morning that on average 20-30 customers a day come in to complain about one problem or another with the LG U8120. Furthermore, he was certain, based on conversations with his colleagues, that this pattern is reflected across the country. The same manager said the phone is fundamentally flawed with common problems being: dropped calls, failure to receive calls (my latest problem), frequent crashes....the list goes on and on and on. Oh, and if you're expecting the phone to work abroad, forget it. On a recent trip to Paris, it completely failed to connect with the local operator and a full week after logging this problem, 3's technical support team have failed to come up with an explanation for this. So, in short, this phone should come with a huge health warning and most definitely deserves more bad press than it has been getting to date. Rubbish.

When i phone anyone WITHOUT A DOUBT my phone will hang up on them - even with a full signal. Absolutely NOTHING works on my phone - thats right, NOTHING! The only thing i can do with it is attempt to call someone - and make it a quick call before the phone hangs up. How many times have i complained? Far too many. I've just sent the fourth e-mail in two weeks to customer services and they havent even bothered to call back. I've phoned the call centers a few times and they were useless. The first time i called was because of a problem with my charging cable and guess what their answer was? 'If you have a friend or relative with the same phone just borrow their cable'. As far as 3 are concerned they can swivel on my middle finger, because i'm not paying a bill for a phone i simply cant use. Why should any of us have to pay them for services which is big joke. Their rolling in our money and laughing at us. I've cancelled all payments to them and i'm off now to write to watchdog - you should too.

This phone has caused me nothing but trouble since I first bought it. 3 should take all these phones out of public service. I had previous problems with this phone (Check out my previous review from 7th December 2004!) and it was sent back to me from the factory. 1 and a half months on, and randomly, my screen (when I turned my phone on) is totally white. It turns on (it vibrates so it's on) but the screen is totally blank white, and I've tried ringing numbers off it even though nothing appears, but that doesn't work. God help me if I'm in an emergency! What a waste of time - I think I'll go back to pay as you go with another operator after the contract is up! And in reply to Andrew's post towards the end of January: A) If a phone is for calling and not playing games and taking pictures, why did you buy a special camera phone - and why do LG etc insist on making them and... B) It would be good to actually CALL someone on a phone, when it never turns on or functions well enough to even make a call!!!

I had nothing but trouble with this phone. I originally had the LG U8110, which bit by bit gave me endless trouble. The screen changed to strange colours and the screen was messed up and I could not see anything to be able to call out. 3 customer services were so unhelpful. I sent the phone 5 times and each time they returned it with the same fault! (Of course I was without a phone for this time that I finally bought an NEC e313 for temporary use - I put it for sale on EBAY when I finished with it -and guess what?? 3 had my listing removed saying something about infringing their rights!! I asked them to explain and they basically sent me the same email! No explanation!!) Finally, I asked for a replacement phone - and they sent me a second hand phone - even though they gave me a faulty phone in the first place. I agree with some of these messages - we should not have to pay for a service this bad - I have cancelled my direct debit - and thanks to a message further down - I will use the "Sale of Goods Rights" if they bother me. Ok, I've had this phone for just over 3 months and if you'd asked me what I thought in November I would have had no problems with it. However, since then there's been nothing but trouble. Ok, it's still a phone, I can still call people but I could do that with my old 3310. But no, I decided to go a bit better and agree to the "wonderful" deal of this new phone with mp3 player, camera, video calling, WAP, MMS etc etc. So far the connection to WAP doesn't work which means that the MMS service also doesn't work. Video calling doesn't work. Camera has stopped working and even when it did work the only way I've found to get the pictures onto your computer is by emailing them (unfortunately without WAP that's kinda difficult!) The battery lasts less than a day, and every so often when I turn the phone on everything will be orange, in Italian and whatever button I press takes me to the message screen. I've rung the very unhelpful customer service centre based somewhere in India to be told that it needed a factory reset. so i did that....fine, no problem...until it did it again...and again. I've phoned about the WAP and MMS problems, they were meant to be sorted in 24 hours...that was on 28th December and it's still not working. Ok, so like I said, you can still call people and get phone calls, but what the hell am I paying so much money a month for?????? This phone and 3 have caused me so much trouble. They're very unorganised and never know what you're talking about. As well as this they've also tried to take me to court for not paying the bill on a phone I've never had. Only now is that hopefully sorted out..and guess what? it was an internal administration error. If there was any way to get out of this contract I would but I can't see one other than paying the rest of the contract off which I really don't fancy doing! Any ideas? Email me on jay_c_81@hotmail.com. I could do with some help...in fact I may copy this email to Watchdog, see if they could do something about it as it seems that this is a pretty common problem

I am writing my review and observations of other reviews on the LG U8120 Handset. This phone proves to be a cutting-edge 3G phone, and consistently, for my brother who owns such a phone, has been nothing but a pleasure to own. There are many problems, and none come from the actual handset itself. 1. Some handsets were released after a significant software flaw, which in later sold handsets, had been cleared up. Mostly all stuff-ups can be related to their software inbalance. 2. 3G network - not a very good network to begin with. They're a growing network, meaning coverage issues and whatnot will be sorted out in the next year or so. Remember, this technology is way ahead of its time, and will need a while to be perfected. 3. Considering this handset came from LG, it should be a top-of-the-range mobile phone. If you are sending your phone into repairs, I should recommend sending to LG repair centre, and not to 3. Many users have been warned to stay away from 3, even if it means to switch sims. Unless you have either dropped it on the ground or splashed it with water, it should have no reason to screw up. If you don't have a software update, and your problems are systematic, it won't be the reapirer's job to fix it - they wouldn't have a clue on how to fix it. Make sure you do have this ever-so important update before you do anything. STAY AWAY FROM 3! miickEe.

Video, Camera, 'Free Downloads', mp3 player, infa red blah blah blah you know the rest, but after about a month of getting this phone the phone decided to turn off and then turn on by its self right in the middle of texting (annoying enough) but when the phone turned on it said 'write new name' and then i soon dicovered EVERYTHING was in the wrong place. For exmaple the messages; inbox was now called 'incoming international calls' and outbox was 'outgoing international calls' and random words came up like when i phoned anybody up where it should've said 'hold' said 'am'. The front display had stopped working and all i could see was a faint time. I rang up 3 (at the time it said i was phoning the netherlands :S) and it was something about language (if you have this problem, press menu, 9, 9, then 1) this did work and put everything back in its place and rightful name HOWEVER, the front display STILL did not work, any shortcut i pressed lead to the messages ALWAYS, the video camera layout was still distorted (the camera still worked it was just the layout). I am very dissapointed that this had happened. Also Beware of 'FREE' downloading, MOST of it is not free as i discovered with my £135 bill!!!! Most displeasing!!!! I would not recommend this phone at all!!! PHONES 4 U SUCK!!! The assistant was talking complete gibberish to me and i understood nothing!!
