LG Secret review

 Review: June 2008

Last updated June 2009

In a nutshell: The LG Secret KF750 is a stunningly beautiful superslim phone, with carbon fibre and tempered glass giving it an aura of quality, and the touchscreen controls and "Neon Touch" visuals making it cool to use.

Best buy: LG Secret KF750 from Amazon Marketplace UK (£150.00)

The LG Secret KF750 is the third in LG's Black Label series - the first two being the Chocolate and the Shine. Like its predecessors, the Secret is a visually stunning phone. The Secret is touchscreen controlled, and uses "Neon Touch". Neon Touch provides a visual response to touch, so you know when you've activated a button. Watch blue lights flicker as you touch the screen - it's great fun for at least the first week of ownership! Not everyone will take to the touchscreen controls, but these kinds of phones have been around for long enough now that many people will have some previous experience of touchscreens.

It's a slide phone, and its claim to fame is that it's the slimmest 5 megapixel camera phone available. In fact at just 11.8mm, it's one of the slimmest slide phones around. Slim phones sometimes have a tendency towards screen damage, but the Secret is constructed from carbon fibre and tempered glass, so ought to be strong enough to survive reasonable amounts of abuse. Despite its slimness, its quite heavy, at 116g, but this helps to give a quality feel.

The camera is excellent, with a specification very similar to that of the excellent Viewty. It uses a 5 megapixel sensor with autofocus, and a macro mode is available for close-ups. One cool feature is "morphing", which lets you edit faces - this is similar to Sony Ericsson's very popular face warp feature. The video camera is good too, recording in Divx format at up to VGA resolution. Like the video camera in the Viewty, you can record at up to 120 frames per second, then play back at a slower rate, for a slow motion effect. The camera also supports video calls, as the Secret is a 3G phone. Another feature worth mentioning out is that the video is Divx compatible, making it easy to download movies and watch them on the phone - and with a good-sized 2.4 inch screen, this isn't as silly as it might sound.

The Secret is well equipped for music, with a music player that supports most popular file formats, as well as an FM radio. With 100 Mbytes of internal memory, you can store up to around 25 songs, but this capacity can easily be expanded by adding a microSD memory card, up to 4 Gbytes (1,000 songs.) Audio quality is high, and the phone can also play MIDI tracks with up to 72 channels.

We've noted that the phone is 3G enabled. It's actually HSDPA-enabled, with download speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps available. In addition to 3G support, it's a quadband phone, supporting GSM 900/1800/1900/2100. The phone comes with a Google package too, making it a reasonably good platform for the mobile internet.

So far so good, but there are a couple of issues that take the edge off this beauty. The first is battery life. Surprise, surprise ... it's a superslim phone and battery life is below average ... have we said this kind of thing before? It's always a trade-off: if you're a heavy user, you'd be better off avoiding superslim phones generally. The other thing is that quite a lot of our users are reporting problems with signal strength. Other minor issues are that the screen is quite hard to read outdoors, and that ringtones can be a little quite. Apart from these issues, the Secret is a lovely phone, and packs in plenty of features too, although it can't compete with the latest phones in this top-end price bracket.

Loved the phone for many of the above qualities. However, found without the extra 4MB - memory far too small for photos/vids etc. also found touch too sensitive when trying to click onto eg. bbc sport football latest scores..forever sliding up and down and thus can be frustratingly annoying!

Very, very good looking... Beautiful default images for wallpaper, not very good with Virgin as you cant make video calls. Signal is to little on internet to post videos onto YouTube and always fails. Low battery life! Great image and video quality. But also very complicated at first usage! Overall, brilliant phone!

Worst phone I have ever had and ive had about 7. The touch buttons freeze ALL THE TIME, my number 1 and number 7 button dont work, it turns off randomly, and this part sounds kinda stupid but it bugs me. If it need to text/call someone and im outside in the rain and if ANY water at all gets on it the up and down buttons stop working for about two hours. Also, the camera is not very good and when your listening to voice mails, since its a touch screen your cheek may end up touching some buttons which brings it to save a random number and you usually have to restart the whole voice mail process. So, all in all, I would save your money and invest in a better quality phone. This one looks nice but its a piece of rubbish. OH i almost forgot. Often when your sending texts it freezes and you cant do anything and often when it loses service the left and right buttons stop working for a while. I wish i had someone to tell me this... I HATE THIS PHONE! DO NOOTTTT GET IT!!

I've used this phone every day for almost 2 years and it's been outstanding. The carbon fibre back and polycarbonate screen make it extremely durable, the camera is good and packs some really impressive features (such as slow-motion video mode) and the reception and battery life has been fine. This phone is honestly one of the worst phones I've ever used. The volume for radio, music has suddenly become extremely quiet - and I've adjusted it so it's on level 7 but I can't hear anything. I've also made sure that the call volume is not the issue - nothing works; you're pretty much better off not listening to music or the radio because the frustration in trying to hear anything, and being drowned out by noise (just normal noise, traffic, etc.) outside of the headphones is just excruciating. In addition, battery life is extremely, extremely poor - that is however, something I can deal with - I simply bought another recharger which I keep with me at work. THe other thing that drives me insane about this phone is the insanely poor signal strength. I'm talking about calls that repeatedly drop out within 30 seconds of picking up; or picking up a receiving call and not being able to hear the other side. I've tried re-starting my phone when this occurs, and nothing works - you are pretty much left with ZERO bars of reception until the stupid phone decides to kick in. Actually, another thing that is pretty annoynig about this phone is the fact that whenever you insert the headset receiver thing (what u listen to for music), the phone turns off! THis is also the case for the recharger. No idea what is happening here; sometimes I see a small spark (more like a light - which lasts for less than 1 second) and it turns off. It doesn't even turn on when u press the red button - instead you have to adjust the battery before turning it on. AGain, no idea what is happening here. All these things make me hate this phone and I am so tempted to smash it into pieces, however, I'm on a stupid phone plan and have at least 1 more year to go before I can get a different phone. NEVER LG that's for sure. I was warned, but was persuaded by the nice look of this phone; which I admit it is. But that is pretty much all the phone is - nice to look at; terrible - honestly just terrible to use. maybe other LG phones are better - but honestly, save yourself the trouble and avoid the Secret. I feel the need to explain that I never write reviews, but I actually came on this site because I was googling how to adjust the stupid volume on this phone - as per first complaint :)

Worst phone I have ever had. On my 3rd new battery, life goes from 24 hours to about 3 hrs withina month. Now it only switches on when plugged in to the charger, so I have to be careful not to switch it off when away from home. Which is a problem due to the number of times it crashes every day. Cant seeem to lock the touch screen, so the phone randomly does stuff whilst closed or whilst you are speaking on it. Touch screen slow to respond. ( I had been warned that LG is just a rebrand for Lucky Goldstar, that dirt cheap TV manufacturer) A huge dissapointment all in all. Am going back to Samsung.

On the plus side the phone looks nice but for the price I paid the faults with this phone are not acceptable. I would suggest people avoid this phone.

well i was happy when i first got this in jan 08 BUT it has terrible battery life after about 10 months it keeps turning off in or when making calls, sending or receiving texts. if you managed to keep it working for 10 months anyway, you will know how terribly slow it is, takes so long to do anything. this makes most of its features a no go zone because i simply dont have the time to wait. response in menus can be slow, and you will find yourself pressing the back button on the touch pad, waiting and pressing it again, only for it to go back twice, which is very frustrating. camera is poor and flash delivers photos that makes you and your friends look undead, which is cool i suppose, if you like white washed faces with plenty of noise, to re-create that nice old looking film grain effect. all bark, very little bite

do NOT buy this phone. LG is a terrible brand when it comes to phone, any lg phone I know of has broken. I am disappointed in this phone, it was expensive yet after a few months of owning it the touch buttons stop working propperly, they are very tempremental, and you will have difficulty doing the most basic of tasks. It also has a terrible battery. You'd think that with one out of three bars left there'd be a third of the battery left, your wrong. You'd be lucky to get an hour out it. Typically, a full charge lasts a day and a half, which gives you an idea on how unreiable the phones idea of showing you how much battery is left is. Another fault with this phone is the camera. With 5MP and flash function you'd expect decent quality photos but you won't get that. The flash overexposes everything, and without the flash the images are very noisey. On the contrary when you first buy this phone and the buttons function correctly, you can put up with the faults. The music player is adequate and the fm radio a bonus. If you are looking to buy this phone and use it for less that 4 months, I would reccomend it, however, in the longrun this is a phone I would never recommend to anyone.

After two months of light usage: Touchscreen lights failed, toughscreen touch failed, central button failed. After a further month: Phone would not make calls. A few days later and the phone GUI decided the English language, in fact all known languages were boring, so instead decided to display all text in an elaborate array of symbols and nonsensical characters, a hard reset fixed this, for an hour at least. Then the phone decided to die, no life at all; at first I though maybe the battery life had just reached an all time low and there was now a usable period of ~0 seconds between charges, but even when plugged in the phone failed to show the smallest hint of life. Quite frankly this is the worst phone I have ever owned, I had it on contract with Orange, who were utterly unforgivable with regards to the manner in which they dealt with my case. (another saga for another day). In short buy this phone at your peril; terrible battery life and a massive compromise in build quality and usability, in short; all in the name of a piece of functionless carbon. fibre

The text message limit is 1000, and there seems to be no way to actually save them as a backup to the computer (I can only view sms messages on the computer using the PC suite, not save them). It is fun to use and has a fantastic camera - I have not found any reception problems with it although I would agree that with a lot of touch screen phones it can be hard to read the screen in bright sun light. The battery life is short but you expect that with a slim phone. On the plus side it is a very easy to use phone and you dont need to carry a manual around with you just to navigate the menu. I think that you should get the phone because everybody that i have shown has loved it and everybody that has used it has loved it so ITS GOOD!

This is easily the worst phone I have ever had! Me and my aunty got the same phone on the same day, and neither of them work properly. The first one I got didn't vibrate, so they gave me a replacement, and this one switches itself off, the lights on the touch pad have gone out, the txting doesnt work properly and it won't register my memory card. The same things have happened to my aunties phone. Also she keeps needing to take the sim card out and put it back in to recieve txts, and the phone has deleted all the second names in her phonebook. The phone looks nice, but its rubbish!

The phone randomly switches off including during calls, the battery life is terrible, the directional touch buttons sometimes refuse to work and they are slow to react, the phone is not intuative at all compared to say an iphone or a k800i etc, the camera is useless because it either uses to much flash or to little, the signal is appauling I have complaints from people all the time about never being able to get hold of me including my boss!, the transfer of pictures etc through the computer is horrible, complicated and slow its just an all round bad phone. If I can convince one person not to buy this phone and get something else then I will be happy avoid avoid avoid!

Ermm this phone was terrible from after the first couple of months. When ever i'm in a conversation of text messages, the phone will turn off and take atleast 2mins to turn on completely again and that happens every time i recieve a few messages in a minute. Never used touch screen. Games are fun for the first day. Stupid touch buttons just mess up. Battery is poor. UPSIDE IS that this phone is practically indestructible! The tempered glass screen means its so hard to scratch or break. Back cover is solid too and scratches are seen much. Dropped this phone many times from great heights and not a scratch! Software problems basically and as some might know you can't get a software update on this phone unless you get it done professionally which is a waste of time.

The is only one downfall about this phone the battery life could be alot better but i have managed to cope and im always on the phone. Overall GREATTT

1. screen almost impossible to read in daylight, even with brightness on full. (trade-off due to being scratch proof?) 2. Touch screen is clumsy and many wrong menus open from incorrect button pressing. This would be rectified if your thumbs are the size of a ball point pen. 3. LG software did not work. received no 'support' from LG. My PC does not even recognize when i plug the USB in (have tried countless remedies from various websites). So I am not able to transfer data to PC. 4. can't save any more the two numbers per contact in the phone. The option is there for a 3rd, 4th etc, but disappears after I save it. The process is straight forward, but does not work. Regret buying it. LG's response to my email asking for help was to tell me to take it into local support store. Too bad if there isn't one in the country I'm currently in.

There is a VERY simple solution to fixing your phone battery life, you just need to make the battery go completely dead, so the phone wont switch on at all, play a few songs, leave the bluetooth on, that sort of thing, and then you just need to charge it for 16 hours. it will work perfectly then.

I've had the LG Secret since 6/12/08. Now I have been reading reviews since I bought the phone and apparently its supposed to be built to last. Maybe this is not so. I dropped my Secret onto a carpet from a very low height, and the chrome surrounding the phone simple snapped. Now I have to put up with it bugging me. About 3 weeks after buying this phone on the Neon Touchpad the top button has gone supremely dim whilst all other buttons are okay. Dissappointing!

I love this phone. I haven't had any problems with either signal or battery which lasts for two to three days and I am a heavy user. The additional features are brilliant and for the first few days just playing the games gives hours of entertaiment which I should mention are motion controlled. The music quality is a lot better than my previous phone however it should be said that it isn't exeptionally loud. I have put this phone through its paces quite litterally with a beating and so far it has survived exeptionally. I would recomend this phone to anybody... unless you are a very VERY heavy caller as I have been on the phone for 4 or 5 hours twice a day very rare for me I should point out, and the phone died on the second call. overall a very good phone.

Cannot play as an mp3 when you charging the phone (As it shares the same connection with earplugs/hands free....) and on bright day you need a special vision to see something on the screen... also the phone freeze often when using media player...sometime it write one text on top of another one (when receiving messages while using it)... Very nice phone from a looks standpoint. Had it for just over a month. Battery didn't seem to be an issue for me, but there were times of poor reception (as others have mentioned). My issue is that like most people, I occasionally drop my phone, no matter how careful I am. First time dropping my LG Secret and the entire front piece of glass shattered. So much for tempered glass. The spread of cracks seems to be coming from the hard button on the bottom. iPhone and BB Storm have taken many a drops, and aside from some scratches, they both have come out well....the Secret, not so much. If you never drop your phone, this is a good phone to get, but the quality of materials on this seems to be more for appearance than actual real world usage. Zro

This phone is poor, at first it seemed all singing an dancing, i was wrong. Its sooo slow to respond to button press sometimes, and ridiculously slow when the wallpaper is an image whose file size is a little larger than normal, you can be waiting 15 seconds for the phone to return to the home screen from any menu screen. The touch screen function ends up pretty useless as it is very unpredictable, the phone has a tiny on board memory, the camera is great outside but terrible indoors at any light, controls and options are fiddly. Not user friendly at all. Had it for 5 months, now the screen has gone insane, turns off and on and looks like it has static like an old tv. Very Poor, very disappointed.
