LG Pop review

In a nutshell: The LG Pop GD510 is a super-compact budget touchscreen phone.

Best buy: LG GD510 Pop - Sim Free Unlo ... from Amazon (£159.99)

Review

LG have taken the massively popular Cookie and turned it into the LG Pop, just in time for the Christmas market! But although the Pop is an enhanced version of the Cookie, it's actually even smaller, although cleverly LG have managed to keep the screen the same size. That's because the screen extends over almost the entire front face of the phone, giving it a sleek almost frameless appearance. It's definitely a nice looking handset. LG are keen to tell us that the Pop is the world's smallest 3 inch touchscreen phone. But perhaps its more useful to say that the Pop has a larger touchscreen than its rival the Samsung Genio Touch, but is significantly more compact in all directions. And the benefits of a large touchscreen display are immediately obvious as soon as you start to use the Pop. As we're fond of saying, when it comes to touchscreens, size really does matter! The extra high resolution and the large physical size of the screen make pressing virtual buttons a lot more fun. Turn the screen on its side for a full QWERTY keyboard, making texting so easy.

The Pop comes with some cool widgets that sit at the bottom of the home screen and allow one touch access to applications such as messaging, web browsing, etc. There are three home pages giving quick access to contacts, multimedia, etc and making the Pop a really fun phone to use. The contacts screen is particularly cool, showing who last contacted you and how they did it. We'd say that the Pop is one of the easiest to use phones around, but with plenty of customisation and fun features to stop people getting bored with it.

The multimedia features of the Pop are similar to other entry-level touchscreen phones. The camera is pretty respectable, with 3 megapixels and video recording too. There's a movie studio app and a slideshow app for viewing photos and video. The music player handles virtually any digital music format and there's also a stereo FM radio built in. The web browser is excellent, although as the Pop lacks 3G, web pages don't load as fast as we might have liked. If you get bored there are plenty of apps supplied, including a surprisingly addictive snakes and ladders game.

Whilst the Pop doesn't have 3G, it is a quadband GSM phone, so you should be able to take it anywhere in the world with you. In terms of connectivity, it has Bluetooth and USB, which is everything you'd expect from a phone priced at under £100.

The Pop may not have added a lot more functionality compared with the Cookie, but it matches the capabilities of other entry-level touchscreen phones, and it does it in style with a beautiful large display, a super compact body, and a fantastic user interface. We initially awarded the Pop 4 stars because we were nervous about its reliability, but six months on, we're revising our rating up to 5 stars, as it seems to be a much more reliable phone than the Cookie. Consider also the LG Cookie Lite.

I got this phone for my 12th and I totally regretted it.
Interenet speed is poor and video capabilities are limited to say the least. The camera is very poor with terrible photo quality. Dont even try to take a photo in the dark as it will come out a blur.
Dont get this phone-myn has broken at least 3 times with in 1 year, and it is soo unresponsive. If you want a low-budget high quality phone, go for the HTC Explorer or Samsung Galaxy Mini

I wouldn't recommend. This was my first phone and I suppose is good for a starter. After a period of time it becomes boring and there is one game on this phone which you can play without having to pay! It is good if all you want to do is text and make calls and use basic applications like voice recorder and calculator. It has bad memory space... but I like the fact that you can choose a character for all your contacts! Haha x

I bought this LG pop GD510 in 2010 for 90 thinking that it was amazing and interesting, but to entertain you it is extremely boring and there is simply nothing to do but look through your own photos or write memos. It is really slow, the camera is not bad at all but the phone is extremely boring and is very bad at entertaining you. The touch screen is good and the phone overall is decent but for me after 6 months I got really bored of it and wanted a new phone. So this is not the phone for you if you want to play games and have fun :)

I had my lg for about a year, and then one day it just froze, and because I was just out of my year guarantee (by 8 days) lg could do nothing about it. I could not buy a new touch screen, so had to buy a new phone. The screen scratched really easily, and there wasn't enough memory in the inbox, so sometimes failed to send/receive messages. It was an okay phone, but I expected a lot more.

MAJOR problem with this phone - it locks when making an automated message call - by which I mean 'dial 1 for.. dial 2 for'. It also locks when listening to answerphone messages that are longer than about 10 seconds. Carphone Warehouse say they have 'never heard anyone complain of this problem' or 'everyone has this problem. I don't believe it for a second.

After maybe a week the problems start rolling in. You turn off the phone and switch it back on you start getting texts that you should have recieved ages ago!! Sometimes when in the middle of a text or a call it just freezes, for no reason what so ever!! Personally i dont think it deserves any stars but since I have to give some it will be 1. But I beg of you save your money and dont buy it and dont listen to the others that say it is good

I've not had the phone for long, only a few months, and I've found it to be a really good phone to begin with. Texting is reasonable, it can take some getting used to if you're not used to touch screens however. The speakers are loud and the headphones that come with the phone are pretty decent. However, my touch screen has started to play up recently, one minute it would be responsive and the next you can't do anything with it since it is completely unresponsive. I wouldn't have been too concerned about this since sometimes you can just have some bad luck, but a friend with the same phone also had the same problem as me and now has a replacement phone.

DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From the first day of purchase, it started doing faulty things. After a few weeks, I found that the battery life was messed up (you charge it for ten hours and it will last about 2 before running out again.) A few weeks after that I found that whilst charging, it would turn itself off randomly, so it wont charge at all. Also, many times the screen freezes, but I find if i take out the battery and put it back in it tends to do the job. However, not, the touch screen has just failed. It turns on and off fine, but i cant access it because the screen wont work. Thinking it was just my phone that was faulty, I did some research and found that MANY OTHERS have EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM with their LG pops. DO NOT BUY. Waste of money.

Well I got this Phone Yesterday I am so impressed with the lg pop I lost my samsung tocco lite so i decided to buy a cheap phone while i got a new one i ended up loving the phone so i am keeping it and not getting a new one The Communication the contacts are easy to read and clearly displayed The recent history is clearly displayed too. Messaging They are easy to follow so you wont get lost easy to delete.but not many emoticons to use though. Email I find is a waste of space myself as it takes time to set up the email account Dialling is easy to use big clear numbers and easily displaying what number you have dialled Contact Are easily displayed as what you have saved and the ones that come with the sim card Speed Dials are easy to enter and you get 9 choices Voice mail comes with it as number 1 New Message easy to make a message clear letters and easy sending options and easy to see what you have entered. ENTERTAINMENT: Camera Very poor mega pixels with only 3 and if its dark very hard to see the picture easy editing and a full range of sepia and water colour for any person who isn't very tecchy. Gallery: Easy displayed photos and it shows your drawing panel drawings too My Stuff: easily displayed two options phone stuff or saved stuff I think Music: love the layout and I absaloutly love the idea of rating the song <3 Games and Apps Love the pocket apps but I don't get the mellow candle and mind selector FM Radio good selction of radia stations and easy displayed Video Camera Agian poor mega pixels having a measly 3mp Moovie studios love the idea as it wont let you get bored but you cant put your drawing panels onto the movie UTILITIES: Tesco Moblile slow loading pages and clear pages to read off Alarms good load alerts and easily displayed to use the alarm widget Organiser Easy to use memo easy to see and easy writing T9 is an option Voice Recorder Easy to use and clear recording picks up the slightest of sound though

I have tried really hard to like this phone, but after about three months I have given up and am looking for another. When the phone is in my pocket, unless the handset lock is on, there is a real danger of the phone randomly phoning or texting anyone on my phone list. On one occasion it sent 87 texts, fortunately to someones landline. Expensive for me but at least not annoying for the recipient on that occasion. I have therefore taken to using the handset lock whenever I go anywhere, unfortunately this then means I cannot use my bluetooth handsfree in the car. The touchscreen scrolling feature is somewhat hit and miss, no doubt the result of the less responsive cheaper system, but it is an inexpensive phone. Such a shame, I really would like to continue using this phone, but I cannot have it phoning people whenever it chooses and it has to be carried in a pocket. I am now reluctant to replace the phone with another smart phone in case the same thing happens.

I bought this fone about 5 months ago - I found it hard to get used to after my nokia....but I really love the big screen. I really really like it, but would give it 4 stars because it has a couple of short falls. 1) On a nice sunny day I can't see the screen (probably usual for touch screen?) 2) I haven't found how to ansa the fone with loudspeaker (might by down to me tho) 3) No stylus or stylus housing. I started using my kids dslite sticks....but they just get lost. Now I have stuck a celophane pouch on the back, and just slot in a cocktail stick! They dont scratch, and cost nothing to replace! Stylus and somewhere to attach it would be a bonus if they want to improve the design.

I've used the LG pop for 5 months now. The main thing to point out is it's lag which grows on you and become very annoying, It takes a 2-3 seconds to load the address book and another 2-3 seconds to search and then it;s more wait once you select the contact! the accumulated wasted seconds from all the steps from the menu to finally calling or texting feels like a very long time! On top of that, the LG user interface is still not well thought out, not customizable enough requires too many steps to get simple things done. No doubt great design, but I wasn't expecting the sluggish performance

i really love this fone. i got i for my 14th b-day present and its the best. it is my first touchscreen fone. some people say that the battery is rubish but i think it ok to be honest. there are lots of apps that you could go on and u can never get board. the gamezs are easy to use but its hard to win. i really like the drawing thing because u can draw wat u want to draw. i have seen people with the lg cookie and i think its better than the lg cookie. i like the size of this fone. even though its small its a good thing because u can fit it in your purse as i do sometimes when i go to school. the phone is so easy that i hardly needed to read the instructions. the internet is ok but sometimes u cant go on certain things like youtube because of age reasons.i think that u should buy thid fone cos its easy, quick and even though it it small, it has a big screen. thanks for reading dis p.s im just wondering if it has a timer on it cos ive looked for it on the fone and i cant seam to find it and ive looked in the instructions booklet. thanks

AMAZING phone way better than iphone and loads of apps you can download too for free! got mine from tesco and its in an exclusive colour-white! and it came with two free backs a hot pink one and a lime green one.The typing is only hard if you have big fingers im 12 and im titch so i have tiny fingers and for me its been so easy. I used to have the samsung tocco lite and the screen got chipped on the second day o Xf having it because i dropped it on my rug so the samsung tocco lite is really bad. I would really recomend this phone 2 every1! x (5 *STARS*)

This phone is pretty decent. However - it's not the phone I would chose. I got it about a month ago as a replacement to my LG KC550. The good: decent sized screen, pretty, stupidly loud speaker, that's about it. The bad: camera's not that good, SLOW TEXTING ARGH, bad touchscreen, lacks a good OS, not so good battery life. I couldn't live with this for a year. It's supposed to be one of those cheap and cheerful phones like the LG Cookie, and is okay if you like them kinda phones. But, like the Cookie, it's So frustrating to text or type! ARGH! Apart from the obvious size difference, the Cookie and Pop are about equal. the good thing about the cookie is it has a stylus so you can use the keyboard and handwriting stuff (which is on the Pop but not very good). Camera? Okay, but hard to get to. the KC550 was much better. Internet? If you just want to update your status or read some MLIAs or FMLs, then it's fine. But serious web browsing? Just no. I would say the best part of this phone is the great speaker! Seriously, on full volume it goes really, really loud. But it does lack a 3.5mm jack, which is annoying considering i lost the original headphones :(

i got the lg pop on contract with orange, i pay 49 quid a month for 24 months and i have to say the phone is probably one of the worst ive ever had! problems started when i noticed contacts completely dissapearing ie name and number and then duplicate contacts appearing such as my dads number appearing twice in my phone book! now my touchscreen doesnt work! ive only had the contract for 4 months, i decided to cancel my insurance cuz i didnt see the point in paying 240 for a 100 or less fone! now basically im stuck with a fone thats completely rubbish and cant use for the next 20 months..i wudnt recommend this fone to anyone..nothing but problems!
