LG KF510 review

 Review: May 2008

Last updated June 2009

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: The KF510 is a gorgeous, ultraslim fashion phone.

Review

With the LG KF510, LG have made a phone that just looks the business. If you want to wow your mates in the pub, look no further. We were expecting the beauty to be just skin-deep, but the more we played with the KF510, the more it grew on us. Sure, we're shallow and easily pleased, but hey!

Let's do the looks first, since that's what this phone is really all about. It's an ultra-slim slide phone with a sleek touchscreen design. The colour scheme is gorgeous, with a two-tone graded finish in either Sunset Red or Stardust Dark Grey. When you move your fingers over the touch-sensitive surface of the phone, LED lights blink on and off. It's quite hypnotic, or at least we thought so. Maybe LG have hypnotised us into writing such nice comments! On the other hand, it's clear from user feedback that not everyone likes the touchscreen buttons, with many people finding them overly sensitive and prone to misfire. Oh, nearly forgot to mention that it's quite a heavy phone, despite being so thin, as its body is made of metal.

There's more to the phone than just looks. The camera is quite respectable for an entry-level phone, with a 3 megapixel resolution and autofocus. Not up to David Bailey standards, but as good as anything else in this price range. There's an MP3 player of course, plus the bonus of an FM radio. You can customise ringtones, play games, send messages and browse the web, just like any other modern phone. Bluetooth and USB connectivity are both present, so all boxes seem to be ticked. There are just two weak areas: the phone is triband, rather than quadband, and the inbuilt memory is limited at just 16 Mbytes (enough for a couple of ringtones and some photos.) However, you can expand the memory to 4 Gbytes by adding a microSD memory card.

Despite our initial expectations of this being a rather superficial kind of phone, we found ourselves liking it very much. However, with the benefit of hindsight, it's clear that this is not a phone that is built to last. The metal body and scratch-proof tempered glass screen should have made it a pretty robust phone despite its superslim design. However, reading through the user comments below, it's obvious that the LG KF510 isn't a robust phone, and many didn't even last a year. Add to this the poor battery performance, and the phone ultimately has proved to be a disappointment.

It's so good looking but it annoys me actually. 1) writing a text, so easy to accidently exit it. and it doesn't save a draft. 2) often have to take out battery/sim as texting won't work. "sms send cancel by some errors" or "sending in progress". at the moment it won't text at all. 3) battery will say full then die the next minute. so it's a rubbish indicator. 4) camera hard to find in a rush 5) often hangs up in the middle of a call by accident It makes up for it in look a little but..

I've had this phone for just over a year and a half, and absolutely love it. I have had no problems til a couple of weeks ago when the on-off button fell out, but despite this seeming to be a common problem, it is something I can live with. The only other negative thing I can say about this phone is that the camera doesn't had a zoom function, but again I can live with this as I bought it to be a phone, not a camera.

dreadful lol. the camera is absulutely useless, no smooth quality in video camera even when you play about with the options. worst thing about it is the reception! goes dead at random moments and when it does, your text doesn't go to your outbox but disapears and It cuts you half way through a phone call. the music player is ok, power cuts dead every now and then, battery is messed up, doesnt last more than a few hours, mine can only take 1gb memory card for some reason, lack of themes, volume seems descent, bluetooth on it is good, files get transferred fast. i've had mine for a while, probably over 16 months. Touchpad quite good, bit annoying at times. as for the design... well thats amazing, the look of it is good and when the lights show up when someone is calling looks nice. For a teenager, don't go for this, you should go for something else. If you want something that looks nice and to show off with, then this is for your taste to anyone who wants to buy it, it's only good for the 1st few months... get a nokia or sony erricson instead.

I think this phone is good, it looks great and is easy to use. Downloading games is very efficient. To preserve the look, a small case 'd be useful. Excellent sound, and sensitive bluetooth system for the car. An important point is that when you like the look of your phone, you 'll often use your handkerchief or other tissue to polish it. The disadvantage of it is that so doing you 'll induce in the isolated parts and in the simcard static polarity, which could interfere with battery and microchips. The result is that when this static polarity becomes too strong, the phone doesn't work anymore, or erratically. The solution is not using shining tissues to polish your nice phone..., or suppressing static taking it in off position in one hand, and lightly touching the wall or a central warming radiator, or other stuff for a few seconds to clear this static polarity. For this process, eventually take off battery and simcard. After it, the phone works again normally.

well I have had this phone for ages now, but although its still going strong I really regret buying it.This is because of many reasons the biggest being how slow it is, it takes a couple of seconds every time you touch the pad for it to react makeing it a nightmare when your in a rush also the camera is not the best having a non existant zoom and poor quality picture even though its not that bad GB, further more its so delicate the slightest knock will scratch and dent this phone makeing it really annoying when its in your bag and you get it out and there is a whole aray of new scratches. I could go on with a whole list of faults with this phone but Id be here forever if you want any advice avoid this phone dont be persuaded by it good looks stay well away!!!!

It randomly switches off mid conversation, detaches from the network constantly (so you need to turn it off and on again), it freezes, the touch screen buttons are on their way out and now my latest one (4 months old) has completely died.

I love everything about it the games [mini game world is my favourite], the radio, the messaging [expecially the fonts. so beautiful] even the camera. The only downfall is that in the first few months I had this phone it would freeze up and i would have to remove the back and then battery to get it going properly again, which was very annoying [expecially on a bus!]. But all in all its a great phone with beautiful quialities and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone, in fact my friend is even considering buying it because shes in love with my phone. Bought for cheap and loved it, it´s supersexy! But beware, it´s also super fragile and crashes every once in a while. Camera´s great for self portraits, but not that much for distant subjects, gets blurry. MP3 Player is great, but I miss better a bass range. Battery stamina is really weak if you listen to music, take pics or play games. Despite all of this, I feel very passionate about this phone.

Completely loved this phone, was snazzy looking and impressed all my mates with just the right touchpad-actual buttons ratio to not be too annoying. However, after dropping the phone (to be fair, quite heavily dropping.. I sorta threw it in a fit of rage but sure this could be done by dropping it too) there is a major dent in the side and the touch pad is no longer working. This means the phone is absolutely useless unless i call someone off speed dial! Most annoying!

Do not buy LG. They ignore emails, letters and phone calls. This phone is tempramental , and mine has had numerous faults, but worst of all came back scratched from LG as just thrown into bag in pieces. Now i am being ignored after almost 4 weeks of trying to contact them It is not a Helpdesk , just and ignoredesk, it has no Customer Service just Customer Non Service

I LOVE this phone! For the price of it you cant beat it. It feels so expensive as its quite heavy and made of metal. Screen doesnt scratch either which has always put me off sliders. Recomaned it to anyone.

do not buy this phone! the touch pad is so annoying and hard to use. it also freezes quite often and the only way to get it working is to take the battery out and put it back in again. which is very annoying when you are texting. and although it says scratch proof it is very easily scratched. i wouldnt recommend this to anyone.

Worst phone, in just 4 months the touch pad has gone and on top of that customer services sucks you more. They asked for 2300 rupees for changing of chip that too in warranty period and customer care is useless to talk

The LG kf510 looks great but there are a few downsides to it. I currently own one and there is a few things that could make it much better. First the phone seems to 'restart' every time I go on to the internet, People can't always contact me and after a while all the messages and missed calls comes through which is not good at all poor reception from the phone my other phone has full signal then the LG only has half of that with the same service company, the battery life sucks not even 10 hours and i'm not on the phone all the time, after a month the charger fitting does'nt work anymore so I struggle to charge it and the fitting is poorly positioned, then for a new age phone MINIMIZE is accential!!!! when the battery runs low you cant even send a sms or do anything with it, the speakers quality is not good at all, then there is some good features like the anti theft which work pretty well. but Its not a good phone at all.
