LG GBB539SWCWS review

 Review: October 2015

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: The LG GBB539SWCWS is a slimline fridge-freezer with a low price, but premium looks. The freezer section is smaller than average, but overall the design makes good use of the available space. With a 10-year warranty on the compressor and a 2-year warranty on other parts, we'd recommend this as a safe, reliable purchase.

Today's best buy: LG GBB539SWCWS White from RLR distribution (£599.00)

Design & features

LG ought to have a good think about how it names its kitchen appliances. The GBB539SWCWS is a real mouthful to remember and to type! In the flesh however, this slimline fridge-freezer has a minimalist design, finished in an attractive Gloss White colour with black trim, and is narrow enough to slot into a 60cm wide gap.

The GBB539SWCWS has a very high quality feel to it, as well as premium looks. Having said that, the doors need a good tug to open, and the recessed handle of the freezer door in particular isn't very ergonomic. We've seen a lot better.

Inside, there's a good use of space, although the 67/33 split between fridge and freezer does limit the amount of space in the freezer, giving this model one of the smallest usable freezer spaces we've seen. The fridge section contains 4 adjustable shelves, a large salad box, and useful door shelving.

Both fridge and freezer run frost-free and the fridge has an antibacterial door seal. The interior lighting is LED, and an LED display shows the temperature.

Efficiency, noise & reliability

Despite an A+ efficiency rating, the energy consumption of the LG GBB539SWCWS is a higher-than-average 307kWh, which will add a few pounds to your annual electricity bill. In terms of noise, the LG is an average performer, being neither particularly loud, nor as quiet as some super-silent models.

LG enjoys a good reputation for reliability, and the appliance certainly feels well made. It comes with a two-year warranty, with a 10-year warranty on the compressor.

Conclusion - an excellent buy

The LG GBB539SWCWS delivers excellent value for money. Priced lower than you'd expect from a manufacturer like LG, this compact fridge-freezer looks and feels like a high-end model. There are plenty of likeable features here, and although the freezer section is somewhat cramped, the fridge section offers a generous storage capacity. We would recommend this as a safe, value-for-money option.
