LG FH4A8FDH8N review

 Review: January 2016

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: There aren't too many black washer-dryers on offer, and the LG FH4A8FDH8N is a good choice if you're looking for an appliance to match a black colour scheme. It's not cheap, but it's a very capable hi-tech machine, with a huge choice of programmes available.

The LG FH4A8FDH8N is a combination washer and condenser dryer with striking modern looks, thanks to its gloss black finish, LED display, and high-tech appearance.

The machine is very solidly built, with a metal exterior and a sturdy, easy-action door.

The control panel is quite complex, with an easy-turn rotary dial to select the main wash programme, push buttons to start and stop the programme, and additional buttons to select additional features and settings. There are a lot of options available, and the controls take some getting used to.

Washing and performance

This washer dryer can handle large loads of up to 9kg washing and 6kg drying, making it suitable for families.

The number of wash programmes is extensive, and includes Cotton, Steam Refresh, Allergy Care, Gentle Care, Stain Care, Duvet, Easy Care / Synthetic, Mix, Quick30, Sports Wear, Wash+Dry. You can also select from a range of download cycles: Baby Wear, Deodorization, Jeans, Kids Wear, School Uniform, Swimming Wear, Rainy Season, Gym Clothes, Blanket, Single Garments, Sweat Stain, Colour Protection, Noise Minimize, Quick Wash + Dry, Dry 30, Dry 60, Turbo Dry and Shirt Dry. You can also select Pre-Wash, Rinse Plus, delayed start and other options. This gives a lot of choice, but makes the machine more complex to operate.

The machine can be quite slow to do a full wash - over 3 hours for a 60° cotton wash, and 5 hours for a full-load wash & dry cycle. However, there are quick wash options available, including a 30-minute wash programme, suitable for lightly stained clothes.

The spin speed is variable, up to a maximum of 1400rpm, and the machine is A-rated for spin performance.

It's rated A for energy efficiency too, which is the best rating available for a washer dryer. This is in part due to LG's very energy- efficient direct drive inverter motor. As for noise, this is a fairly average machine - choose Bosch or AEG for quieter appliances in this price range.

LG has a very strong reputation for reliability, due in large part to its direct drive motor, which comes with a ten year warranty. The FH4A8FDH8N seems solidly-built, but we do wonder whether the complexity of the control panel and its associated electronics offers the potential for more things to go wrong.

The machine uses LG's Smart Diagnosis system, enabling any faults to be diagnosed with a compatible smartphone, for easy reporting and repair.

Conclusion - a high-tech washer-dryer

The LG FH4A8FDH8N isn't LG's most expensive combo washer-dryer, but at around £750, it certainly isn't cheap. However, for the money, you do get a very well-made and high-tech appliance, very well specified and capable. It's a good-looking machine too - one that will certainly make an impression in a modern kitchen.

We do have concerns about the complexity of the controls and the sheer number of options available, and also the relatively long washing times. But on balance, this is an excellent machine that deserves its 4-star rating.
