LG F1695RDH review

 Review: December 2015

Rating: 5 stars

In a nutshell: The LG F1695RDH washer-dryer comes with a very high price tag, but justifies it in several ways. First of all, it has an exceptionally large drum, making it able to wash and dry far more than most rival machines. Secondly, it has stylish looks, and is very easy to use. Thirdly, it's energy-efficient, reasonably quiet, and comes with a ten-year warranty on its direct drive motor. We can't find any downsides to this machine.

The LG F1695RDH is a combined washer-dryer designed to offer the very highest level of performance. It's an over-sized machine, with a monstrously big 77 litre drum, and is unusually tall and deep, so be sure to measure up carefully before purchasing this machine.

The machine looks good, with a gloss white metal finish and an LCD display panel. It's a very contemporary look, that will complement a modern kitchen. It's very solidly built too, with a door that opens and closes easily, and an easy-turn rotary dial control.

The controls are simple to operate, with a rotary dial to select the wash programme, push buttons to start and stop the programme, and a touch panel to select advanced features like steam wash and delayed start. The display panel shows clear information about what the machine is doing.

Washing and performance

The washing and drying capacity of this machine is truly enormous. It can handle wash loads of 12kg and drying loads of 8kg, which is double the capacity of many washer-dryers, making it suitable for even the largest of families.

There's a very comprehensive selection of wash programmes, including a steam wash. Wash times are reasonably quick by modern standards, with a 40° cotton wash taking one hour and 40 minutes.

The spin speed is variable, right up to a very high 1600rpm, which is capable of removing up to 44% of moisture before the drying programme begins. This gives it an 'A' spin performance.

Overall energy performance is rated 'A', which is the highest possible rating for washer-dryers. This is in part due to LG's very efficient direct drive inverter motor.

The direct drive motor makes the machine relatively quiet too, especially during spin mode. It's not as quiet as the best machines from AEG or Bosch, however.

LG has a very strong reputation for reliability, due in large part to its direct drive motor, which comes with a ten year warranty. This model seems particularly well made, and designed to last, although it's possible that with the sheer amount of technology that has gone into building this appliance, there's more to go wrong.

The machine uses LG's Smart Diagnosis system, enabling any faults to be diagnosed with a compatible smartphone, for easy reporting and repair.

Conclusion - a high-spec, high-tech washer-dryer

This combo washer-dryer is one of the most expensive models currently available. However, it justifies its high price by outperforming rival appliances in almost every area. Most notable is its enormous washing & drying capacity, which far exceeds most washer-dryers. It's very easy to use, with a wide variety of programmes. It's energy efficient and reasonably quiet in operation, and it should be reliable too. For all these reasons, it gets an "outstanding" rating from S21, which isn't something that we give out lightly or often.

Perhaps the best alternative is the L87696WD washer dryer from AEG.

Don't waste your money on this product. The dryer is very unreliable, doesn't dry but keeps spinning the hot, humid air in the drum.
