LG F14U1FCN8 review

 Review: April 2016

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: The LG F14U1FCN8 washing machine in black is a high-spec, high-tech appliance. Using a fully touch-operated control panel and an LED display, it has a bit of a learning curve initially, but is easy to use once you're familiar with it. Super-efficient and incredibly quiet, it has a large 9kg capacity, a 10 year warranty on its Direct Drive motor, and automatic diagnosis of faults with a dedicated smartphone app.

The LG F14U1FCN8 Turbowash washing machine is quite special. Finished in gloss black metal, the F14U1FCN8 is uncompromisingly modern in appearance, with a black tinted door with a chrome rim, and a fully touch-operated control panel. Its over-sized door makes loading and unloading easy, but do be aware that the machine is very deep, so take measurements carefully before ordering one.

The build quality of this appliance is as good as anything we've seen, and it is clearly manufactured to a very high specification.

This is a high-tech washing machine, and its touch control panel can take some getting used to. However, the angled controls are laid out very clearly, and are nicely sensitive to touch, so within a few washes you should find it very easy to navigate. There are useful displays of the time remaining, and the details of the selected programme, including temperature and spin speed.

Our only gripe is that the child lock doesn't seem to lock the control panel, so it's possible to accidentally cancel the wash part-way through.

Washing and performance

The LG F14U1FCN8 uses a direct drive system, making it incredibly quiet and energy efficient. In fact, on its most energy-efficient washes, it exceeds the EU's A+++ energy label by 40%, making it the most energy-efficient machine we've ever reviewed, here at S21.

The price you pay for that low energy use is that wash times can be very long. In fact the full load 60°C cotton wash takes an alarming 291 minutes. Fortunately there are alternative wash programmes that don't take anything like this long, including an incredibly quick Speed14 wash. In total there are 14 wash cycles available, including 5 Download Cycles - Small Load, Lingerie, Wool, Skin Care, and Cold Wash.

The machine's Turbowash feature uses a jet spray to reduce wash times - cutting the time of a standard 90 minute wash to 60 minutes. It's also key to the increased energy efficiency and water usage of the machine.

The maximum spin speed available is a moderate 1400rpm, giving the machine a "B" rating for spin performance.

LG is well known for manufacturing long-lasting and reliable washing machines, and this model comes with a 10 year warranty on the direct drive inverter motor and all its parts. If a problem does develop, you can use LG's Smart Diagnosis NFC-based smartphone app to find out what's wrong before calling out an engineer.

Conclusion - a good high-tech option

We recommend the LG F14U1FCN8 washing machine for anyone looking for a high-tech solution to their laundry. The gloss black finish and touch controls won't be to everyone's taste, and to get the most out of this machine, you'll want to have an NFC-enabled smartphone to access the Download Cycles and SmartDiagnosis tools.

If that sounds like you, then we fully recommend this high-spec machine. It boasts incredibly high energy efficiency, super-quiet operation, a wide choice of wash cycles, and a large 9kg load capacity. It's far from being cheap, but if it lasts for 10 years, it'll prove to be an excellent purchase.
