LG Crystal GD900 Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: The Crystal continues LG's tradition of innovative
design, with the world's first transparent keypad! The slide-down keypad
is touch-sensitive and completely transparent, and the main display
is touch-sensitive too. The display is fantastically high in resolution
with 800x480 pixels and 16M colours. The Crystal also features an 8
megapixel camera, MP3 player, FM radio, 1.5GB memory plus a memory card
slot, HSDPA and WiFi. The only fault seems to be a tendency to freeze.
Review: July 2009. Last updated September 2010.
LG are well known for innovation in their designs, and the Crystal
is another unique design concept. It's the first mobile with a transparent
keypad. Like the Samsung Tocco Ultra,
the LG GD900 combines a touchscreen user interface with a slide-down
numeric keypad. The difference here is that the keypad is touch-sensitive
too and is completely transparent! There are no individual keys, just
a flat transparent surface with numbers etched on it. You just need
to press the right part of the surface to enter numbers. The main display
is a large touch-sensitive screen, with a phenomenally high resolution
of 800 x 480 pixels and 16 million colours. It's larger than the Tocco
Ultra screen too, at 3 inches diagonal. The main display uses LG's S-Class
user interface with its hallmark rotating cube, as featured on phones
like the LG Arena and Viewty
Smart. There are some extra features such as gesture shortcut (draw
a character on the touchscreen to access your music, inbox, etc - gimmicky!)
and multi-finger touch (to control zooming, etc.) We like the user interface
and we absolutely love the hi-res screen. Despite the novelty factor
it works well and is perfectly usable.
However, although we were expecting to be blown away by the appearance
of the phone, it took us all of 3 seconds for the novelty of the transparent
keypad to wear off. There's nothing wrong with it, you understand, and
it's quite cool to be able to touch a piece of transparent plastic and
make it light up and do stuff, but it wasn't as cool as we were expecting
it to be. Especially when you consider the huge price tag of this phone
- something like £500 sim-free.
For a phone this expensive, it had better have more than just a see-through
keypad and a snazzy screen! It does have an excellent camera, with an
8 megapixel sensor, face detection, autofocus and a high-quality lens.
It has life's essentials, including an MP3 player, FM radio, web browser,
high-speed internet (HSDPA 7.2 Mbps), WiFi and plenty of memory (1.5GB
built-in plus a card slot), but surprisingly it doesn't have GPS.
It's a funny one, the Crystal. LG clearly tried hard at their brainstorming
session, and came up with a good idea, but it's just far to expensive
to become a popular handset. Buy it if the design works for you and
you have buckets of disposable cash. Otherwise, you'd be better off
with a conventional touchphone like the LG
Viewty Smart or a touch-slide like the Samsung
Tocco Ultra.
Update (September 2010): One year on, the price of the Crystal is more
reasonable, but user reviews indicate a tendency for the phone to freeze.
Features of the LG GD900 Crystal include:
- 8 megapixel camera with Schneider Kreuznach lens and face-detection
autofocus
- Video camera & video calling
- Display: TFT, 16 million colours, 800 x 480 pixels (3 inches) with
auto rotation
- MP3 player & FM radio
- 64 voice polyphonic ringtones
- Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, email
- Document viewer
- Java games with motion sensor
- Wallpaper
- Phonebook
- Memory: 1.5 GB plus microSD memory card slot (up to 32 GB)
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.1, USB, WiFi, TV-Out
- Internet: WAP 2.0, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, web browser
- Vibration alert
- Quadband GSM / 3G HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
- Size: 105 x 52.5 x 13.5 mm
- Weight: 120g
- Talktime: 4 - 6 hours
- Battery standby: TBC

Have used it day to day for three years. It still has the wow factor
especially at night when the transparent keypad lights up and people
ask how can it work when transparent? Brilliant 8 megapixel video camera
which never seems to run out of video memory! However the blue clock
which can be wiped off the screen has been wiped off for good (I don't
know how I did that!). One of the games it has responds to your breath
and that impresses! The MP3 player is excellent but the radio is only
good for 3 or 4 station reception. Still it has a wow factor for people
who have not seen it before - espevcially at night!

Sexy officially ease of use, and a cell phone should look sexy, if she
competes in the market the gadget stiff. LG is desperate to make something
out of the box with this phone and we were stunned by the transparent
keyboard of the handset. The keyboard can also be used as a touch-sensitive
controller. To scroll through the items on the phone, all you have to
do is slide your finger on the problem. It's like a laptop trackpad
from. You can also squeeze on your keyboard to zoom in and out on photos.
All this seems too good to be true. We do not know what the secret,
but we must congratulate the LG.

I had this phone quite a few months, it's ok but nothing special, it
was the transparent keypad that drew me to it and the fact you can use
it as touch screen also. It has some good features such as wifi, 8mp
camera and its easy to use. 2 things I really don't like about it is
when someone rings me, due to the motion sensor the screen is blank
when I pick it up and I have to move it around for it to show who is
calling. The second thing is the alarm didn't always go off even though
it showed as being set. Maybe this is just a fault on my phone, I don't
know anyone else who's got one to compare it to? I would say the phone
is more of a gimmick, there are better phones out there!

I had this phone for 8 months before the pcb blew, and I only purchased
it in Oct 09!It kept on cutting out, freezing, and was impossible to
turn off unless u removed the battery! It was well looked after (the
cost alone made me swathe it in cotton wool!) I had returned it for
repair, less than a month later it displayed the same faults once again..to
date, I've still not received the phone back from the repair centre,
and i dont want it back!!!...Plus points, well it looks good, thats
about it, but cannot honestly say how well it worked, as I believe its
never worked correctly No wonder stores no longer stock this phone!

the 8mp camera and the crystal keypad and the touch keypad. But it is
actually rubbish. The phone freezes when i slide it up... it freezes
when i slide it down... and when im at school and its in my blazer i
find its turned itself off. I think people only buy it because of its

Is there anyway to increase the memory space of text messages? I hate
it when I have to keep deleting old messages. And I counted, and I only
have 200+ messages in my phone and they say its full? The exterior is
pretty and looks cool, but there are pretty much some internal problems
such as phone hanging occasionally, not enough memory space for text
messages etc.

I got this phone as a birthday present, but it started developing problems
within a month. The phone ramdomly turned off, and the screen froze
when texting often. when it turned off, you could just turn it back
on, but it was annoying and uncomfortable to use. When the screen froze,
you could turn the phone off then turn it back on, but this too was
tiring, and you lost whatever you were texting. I tried to fix it in
singapore LG service centers twice already, and the problems are still
the same. The third time I asked to have it exchanged with a completly
new one, and they said I would have to email their superiors. All in
all, I would not recommend buying this model. It's very expensive with
lots of problems. I've seen other people at the service center holding
the same phone.

Ok, first off. The iPhone wont let you have mp3 ringtones and the contract
is stupid! (£35 a month and they want to still charge me for texts?)
Only idiots or people who get discount have iPhones (or rich kids whom
live off of mommy and daddy!) you can forward texts, quite easily. the
top lef corner - that thing that looks like a piece of paper, it's more
options. The camera isn't blurry - just switch autofocus off - and hold
the phone still. It isn't that expensive - My mate is on the same contract
with orange and he has a tocco ultra (bought at same time.) You can
see it in a sunny day (the screen has been treated so not to cause glare
and the touch pad is quite visable. I personally think that a clear
touch pad looks nice... but some people's taste is just weird (Ed Harris
Sony Ericcson phone anyone?) To those who say touch is too sensitive...
LOOK IN THE OPTIoNS!! and all those who say about the 3.5 jack... Well
mine is like a walkman phone... You can plug whatever headphones you
want. As for being cheap plastic... It's glass you rem. The touchpad
is glass because it needs to refract light. not reflect but refract.
I have had this phone 1 week. Sure it isn't the iPhone with expensive
apps, stupid legal issues with mp3s and an expensive contract with O2
(who give you nohing for being their customer!) but it is however a
great phone. The wifi is great - with good speed and great quality (tested
on youtube) and the HSDPA is also quick (tested on google maps) it's
memory is great - many mp3s and pics. The camera is good but was expecting
more. Menu is good but could use an apple style store selling apps and
widgets. NOW THE MOST iMPORtAnT PART: Phone calls: Excellent - clear,
loud and no hanging up by accident. Video calls: Also great. good quality
and the resolution of the screen is awesome. MMS: Easy to use. SMS:
Touchpad makes texting easier for me - i am not a speed texter but with
T9 I am fast becoming one. Hope this helps anyone - and remember just
because someone on here cn't do something (eg forward txts) doesn't
mean it can't be done - just ask someone at LG or Carphone Warehouse
(UK)

the phone is good and the first time i've got an LG, the only thing
is that the battery indicator keeps going up and down every so often
so you dont know if you have a full/half or in some occassions no battery.

is it me or is it impossible to forward a text on this phone? what is
the point of having unlimited texts if you can't even forward on a joke??
can also be slow to respond when you receive a new message. haven't
tried the net as i don't want to put my new sim in as i'm seriously
thinkin of returning this phone purely for the reason that you can't
forward a text!! will swap for an Arena as the 8mpix camera isn't really
all that

Had it for a while now, quite decent. Worth the price tag? Meh, perhaps.
Touchscreen/Touchpad combinations works excellent, and is quite useful,
very hard to do without the moment you use a touchscreen-only phone
after using this one. Feels responsive and fast. Bad points: The camera
is a bit too blurry, and feels rather cheap, and no real way of downloading
new apps to it. Great phone apart from that.

This phone looks stunning but the only problem is is that i dont get
why there is a transparent keypad, personally i'd rather there just
being normal touchscreen keys. Anyway money for it is great ! Only 400!
Or so. Yeah so good.

I have had this phone just under 2 weeks, i love the way it looks and
the features. The general usage is very easy to pick up and not too
complicated for complicated sake! I have a problem though, and was wondering
if anyone else has experienced this....In the last 10 days of owning
the phone, on 4/5 seperate occasions i have come to use it, pressed
the 'unlock' button and nothing has happened, the phone seems to be
turned off, so i switch it back on and the display tells me my SIM is
not inserted, the phone then switches itself off again showing the message
'you have removed your SIm, please re-insert before switching on'....GREAT!!!
Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks

keypad i think its wicked and whoever came up with the idea, high-five.
Although i absolutely love this phone to bits because of the price i
can not buy it so all i can do is stare at the phone until the price
goes lower a few years so i can buy it. Other than that looks good.

got this phone from carphone warehouse and returned within the 14 days
"cool off period". The touchscreen is way to annoying espacially when
on a call if if you moved your hand slightly and it brushes pass the
bottom of the screen it will terminate the call mid conversation. Also
problems receiving calls not for the lack of trying around 10 times
just could not get through, overall a pricey phone and i have seen better.

of the high price tag. i think LG could have released it at a lower

This phone seems to have all the kit and a great gimmick to go along
with it - the only thing that really disappoints me about this handset
is LG's attention to detail on the SAR level. It is RIDICULOUSLY high
for a brand new handset and I think they should have thought more about
the safety of the handset...

Easy to set up and use. Looks gorgeous. Calls are great. Camera is best
i've had on a phone.Solid build to it. Nice looking cover comes with
it, to protect from scratches and keep it nice and shiny. No 3.5mm headphone
jack, but does include adapter, and so has no holes to get dust in.
Camera lens and memory card slot are protected under slider. The touchpad
is brilliant for browsing the web and texting, and not just a gimmick.
Highly recommended.

Cheap plastick build quality - Very poor for a high end phone. Menu
system jumps all over the place and on some occasions seeems to have
a mind of its own. Even on highest quality 8 mp camera v dissapointing,
my N95 gave far better results. Call quality is good but phone gets
quite hot after short periods. Was really looking forward to the release
of this phone, but sadly dissapointed. LG tried too hard and have come
out with what appears to be an unfinished product. Innexcusable that
it is marketed as a multimedia phone but doesn't have a 3.5 mm headphone
jack?! Would have returned it, but wasn't allowed to as had opened it
and tried it out.
