LG BP520 review

 Review: January 2013

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: A good value Blu-Ray player with Smart TV, 3D playback and optional Wi-Fi.

Design & looks

The BP520 is a smart and stylish Blu-Ray player with a black, glossy finish. It will blend in well with a contemporary LED TV from LG or another make. The only difference between this model and the BP420 is that it can be upgraded to Wi-Fi by adding an optional dongle (sold separately).

The player can play Blu-Ray disks as well as DVDs, including DVD+RW/+R and DVD-RW/-R. It can also play CDs, including CD-R and CD-RW. Surprisingly for an entry-level player, it has full support for 3D Blu-Ray disks.

When playing DVDs, the player can upscale to full 1080p HD.

Smart Hub

The player is equipped with LG Smart TV giving you access to catch-up TV, LoveFilm, a premium video on demand service, Facebook, Twitter and LG Apps. For this, you'll need to connect the box to the internet using an ethernet cable, or make use of the optional Wi-Fi dongle.

The player connects to a HD Ready TV via HDMI or to an older TV via a composite AV connection. There's also an optical audio output for connecting to an external speaker system.

A USB port lets you plug in a USB drive or other device and access music, photos or videos on your TV.

An ethernet connection enables internet access, and a Wi-Fi dongle is available for purchase.

You can also download an app to turn your smartphone into a remote control for the device.

Conclusion - a good value player with Smart TV, 3D and optional Wi-Fi

There's no difference between this model and the BP420, apart from the optional Wi-Fi dongle, which is sold separately. Choosing this model will give you the option to upgrade, but otherwise you might be better off choosing the BP620 which has Wi-Fi built in and will save you the trouble and expense of buying the dongle.
