LG 49UF850V review

 Review: September 2015

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: The 49-inch LG 49UF850V is a very stylish UHD TV that's ideal for family viewing. Picture quality isn't the best for the price, but the UF850V makes up for this with its stunning design, user-friendly WebOS Smart TV, and 3D capability.

Summary

The LG 49UF850V is the 49-inch version of the LG 55UF850V we reviewed earlier, so read our detailed review of the 55-inch LG UF850V for full details.

The UF850V is something of a style icon, and a candidate for "best-looking TV of 2015." Its superslim design, ultra-narrow frame and ribbon stand, together with plenty of eye-catching use of metal, make it really stand out from rival televisions. Just be aware that the extra-wide stand is uncompromising when it comes to finding space to put this monster, and you'll need plenty of shelf width to accommodate its footprint.

49 inches is an excellent size for a family TV. That extra one inch compared with 48-inch TVs makes a surprising difference. Here's a graphic courtesy of LG that heavily exaggerates the benefits:

Seriously, it's a nice size. We're not knocking it.

One of the best features of this TV is its excellent Smart functionality. LG's WebOS system is fast and easy to use, especially with the magic remote control supplied. You have full access to Netflix 4K, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube, BBC iPlayer and Demand 5, as well as other apps. The TV has built-in Wi-Fi and ethernet for easy connection to your home network. It also has a built-in Freeview HD tuner.

The UF850V is a UHD (4K) TV that's able to produce exceptionally fine detail. It's a nice bright screen too, with wide viewing angles, and works really well in most situations. It tends to fall a little flat in darkened rooms, or when watching movies, due to the lack of native contrast from its IPS screen. It doesn't have the fastest response times either, so motion can be a little sluggish.

The TV does make up for this when it comes to 3D, and if 3D viewing is something that's important to you, this is an excellent choice.

We've been watching the price of the 49-inch UF850V with interest. It really does move around a lot. If you plan to buy this TV, you should watch the price carefully too. Anything more than about £900 would be a rip-off, and ideally, we'd like to see the price fall below £800.
