Lec TF5517W review
|Review: October 2015|
In a nutshell: If you're on a tight budget, you could do worse than choose the Lec TF5517W. Although this freestanding fridge-freezer has quite a cheap look, it seems to be better made than many low-end appliances. The storage space isn't large, but it's cheap to run. Be warned though, that it's at the noisy end of the scale.
Today's best buy: Lec TF5517W White from Corbetts Electrical (£359.99)
Design & features
The LEC TF5517W fridge-freezer is a moderately tall, standard-width appliance with a plain, white plastic finish. Although it has a budget look, it feels quite solidly built, and the doors open without too much trouble.
Inside, the interior has very basic styling, but the available space is used efficiently, with fully adjustable fridge shelves. The overall storage space is quite limited, and is probably too small for most families. The shelves in the fridge door are rather shallow, and we'd be worried about storing glass jars in the shelves in case they fall out when opening the door.
On the positive side, it's a fully frost-free appliance, so defrosting occurs automatically during normal operation.
Efficiency, noise & reliability
This appliance has an A+ energy rating, and is economical to run, mostly because of its small freezer capacity. On a less positive note, it's a particularly noisy fridge-freezer, with quite a loud hum coming from the compressor.
In terms of reliability, we can't expect too much from a low-cost appliance that's so obviously built to a tight budget. The noisy compressor doesn't fill us with confidence either. We have no firm data on reliability, but we would expect this to be at the lower end of the scale.
Conclusion - a good choice if you don't mind the noise
The LEC TF5517 fridge-freezer is undeniably good value, and although its styling is very basic, it has a solid feel to it. The storage capacity is limited, making this more suitable for a couple than a family, but the available interior space is utilised quite well. It's a cheap fridge-freezer to run, and has the advantage of being fully frost-free, but be warned that it's not a quiet appliance.

The first one only lasted less than 18 mnth after numerous repairs the guarantee company (legal & general) opted to replace it unfortunately with the same model now the new one less than a week old has burnt out & we are waiting to hear what they are going to do know.
I wouldn't touch one of these Lec fridge freezers again.
