Hotpoint SMP85BSB review

 Review: May 2016

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: The Hotpoint SMP85BSB fridge freezer has a stylish Anthracyte black finish, with silver-coloured easy-open handles. It's a smart look, and this extra-tall appliance gives you loads of freezer space, although the fridge storage is compromised as a result.

Design & features

With its matte black Anthracyte finish, the Hotpoint SMP85BSB certainly makes a strong first impression. It's definitely a stylish option, and the quality is well above Hotpoint's budget models. The door handles are plastic, not metal, but they feel solid enough and the doors have an easy-open mechanism that works very smoothly.

It's an exceptionally tall appliance, and deep too, so make sure that you have the space for this before ordering.

The fridge-freezer has a generous capacity, particularly for freezing. The freezer compartment has a huge 124 litre net capacity, which is one of the largest you'll find on a standard 60cm-wide appliance from any manufacturer. There are four freezer sections in total, and an ice tray is included.

The upper fridge section is less generous in size - partly because the freezer uses up so much space. The door has extra-deep shelves, which is handy for storing large milk bottles, but the double salad drawers tend to limit the amount of general-purpose storage space on offer. It's not a layout that will be ideally suited to every family. We think that the interior fittings feel a bit flimsy too.

The appliance is frost free, and has a nice touch-control display panel.

Efficiency, noise & reliability

Although it has an A+ energy rating, the Hotpoint SMP85BSB fridge-freezer isn't particularly energy efficient, using a hefty 354 units of electricity each year. That makes it relatively expensive to run.

It's a quiet appliance however, running at an exceptionally low 38dB.

As for reliability, since this model has only been available for a few months, it's hard to make a definitive statement. Hotpoint doesn't have the reputation of top brands like Samsung or Bosch, and the interior build quality gives us some concerns. Hotpoint appliances come with a one-year manufacturer’s guarantee, with an extended warranty available at additional cost.

Conclusion - stylish, with a huge freezing capacity

The key selling points of the Hotpoint Smart Plus SMP 85 B SB are its striking looks, and its above-average freezing capacity. However, that extra-large freezer does limit the amount of fridge space available.

While it's a good value appliance, do be aware that there are reasons why it's cheaper than rival brands like Bosch and Samsung - primarily build quality and energy efficiency.
