Hotpoint RSG964J review

 Review: April 2016

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: New for 2015, the Hotpoint RSG964JW is currently one of the company's most popular washing machines. It's good value, offering a big 9kg wash capacity and plenty of washing programmes for not much more than 300. The max spin speed is high at 1600rpm, although the machine can be noisy when spinning at high speed, but it's quiet when washing. This is a good choice for families wanting to make use of its Eco low-temperature washing features.

Today's best buy: Hotpoint RSG964JX from Co-op Electrical (£365.00)

The Hotpoint Smart + RSG 964 J washing machine in Polar White is a smart, nicely-styled washing machine with a solid feel and a large 62 litre capacity drum.

The RSG964J has a fairly simple control with a rotary dial to select the programme. There's no written information on the dial - instead, the dial selects a number, which references a programme printed on the detergent drawer. To the right, a digital display shows information about the wash, including the time remaining. Push buttons on the display panel are used to select options, and the power button is tucked away to the left of the rotary dial. It's not the clearest or simplest control panel we've seen, but it shouldn't present any significant problems, once you get used to its quirky layout.

Washing and performance

The 9kg capacity of the RSG 964 J is plenty big enough for family-sized loads, and the fast spin speed of 1600rpm is quick enough to remove most of the moisture from the load before drying.

This Ultima S-Line machine achieves a high A+++ energy efficiency rating, but wash times for a full load on the 60° Cotton are an eye-wateringly long 3 hours and 55 minutes, although a turbo wash lasts just 45 minutes. Washing at lower temperatures is quicker, and the machine is really geared up for low temperature washing, using a direct injection method to dispense detergent as a cleaning foam into the wash. A low-temperature 20° wash can be used to wash both whites and colours simultaneously, without risk of colours running, and takes 1 hour 50 minutes. There's also a fast 30 minute cycle for half loads.

The machine has been awarded the Allergy UK Seal of Approval, and its special Anti-Allergy programme uses a combination of high temperature and extra rinses to neutralise and remove 99.9% of major allergens, including dust mites and pollen.

Other special programmes include a Baby Cycle designed to wash bulky loads of bedding and towels efficiently in just under two hours, an Ultra Delicates Cycles, Duvet Cycle and Woolmark Platinum Care.

The machine runs very quietly when washing, but can be rather noisy when spinning at full speed.

Hotpoint is a solid mid-market brand and the sheer number of units sold gives some confidence that this product will be reliable. The manufacturer's warranty covers parts and labour for the first year, and parts for ten years.

Conclusion - a good family choice for Eco washing

The Hotpoint RSG964JW is a good choice for a large family, especially if you want to make use of its low temperature wash options. With a high energy efficiency, a maximum spin speed of 1600rpm and quiet washing, it's a good all-rounder, once you get used to the odd control layout.

We're less convinced by the length of its high temperature cycles, and while it's quiet when washing, when spinning at full speed, it's another story.

The Hotpoint RSG864J is the same, but with a slightly smaller 8kg capacity, and cheaper.

Really impressed with how quite this machine is, my wife has a holistic therapy business and is able to wash towels between therapies in the next room without disturbing her clients. Wash cycles take a bit of getting used to as you have to work out what the clothes label says, but once you've mastered it it is extremely efficient. +++++ a great buy.
