Bosch WAE28462GB review
|Review: March 2016|
In a nutshell: The Bosch WAE28462GB is one of Bosch's cheapest washing machines, and it offers very good value for money. With a very respectable A+++ energy efficiency rating, a good 7kg wash load capacity, and a decent build quality, it's a good buy for anyone on a budget. Just be aware that it's a noisier machine than what we normally expect from the German manufacturer.
The WAE28462GB is one of Bosch's entry-level Series 4 washing machines. It's one of the company's cheapest, with a smaller drum size and a less sophisticated control panel and feature-set than the more expensive machines.
The machine has a cheaper, more plastic feel than the company's more upmarket appliances, but it's still solidly built. The door clicks shut in a satisfying way, and there's no reason to doubt the quality of the machine's construction.
The control panel is straightforward, with an easy-turn rotary dial to choose the wash programme, and a small LED display to indicate progress. There are touch controls to select Reduced Ironing, Start delay, and Aqua Plus options, as well as Start, Spin Speed and to choose between SpeedPerfect (fast wash) and EcoPerfect (uses less energy).
For best washing results, we'd recommend choosing SpeedPerfect and Aqua Plus.
Washing and performance
The WAE28462GB has a relatively small 55 litre drum, but it can still handle a family-sized 7kg wash load. A full cotton load at 60 °C takes a somewhat lengthy 3 and a half hours, but in an emergency you can use the Super Quick 15 programme to freshen up your clothes.
This is one of the noisiest Bosch machines we've reviewed, and it can make quite a loud noise in your kitchen. But Bosch's SuperSilent models costs at least £100 more than this entry-level model.
It's a Bosch, so although it's one of the company's cheapest washing machines, we still have confidence that it's built to last. It's possible that the motor won't have the same long lifetime as Bosch's more expensive machines, but the machine ought to comfortably meet the industry average lifespan of 7 years.
Conclusion - a good no-frills option
When buying a home appliance, it makes sense to follow the crowd, and Bosch is one of the most popular manufacturers in the UK right now. This entry-level model may not have the ultra-high energy efficiency and super-silent motor of Bosch's best washing machines, but it's nevertheless a well-made washing machine with a good range of basic options, and is very easy to use. Only the rather lengthy wash cycles give us any real cause for concern, but sadly long wash times are an industry-wide problem these days because of environmental regulations.
