Bosch KGN39VL31G review
|Review: October 2015|
In a nutshell: The Bosch KGN39VL31G fridge-freezer fits a lot of storage into a narrow space. The fridge section in particular is huge. It's a beautiful appliance, with stainless steel doors, and has excellent build quality. It's quiet and efficient too, and is well-priced. Only a few oddities in the interior layout prevent us from awarding it 5 stars.
Design & features
The Bosch KGN39VL31G is a tall fridge-freezer, designed to make the most of a narrow space. With a height of 2 metres, it might be too tall for some people to reach the top shelf.
First impressions of the KGN39VL31G are of total quality. It's a beautiful appliance with gently-curving stainless steel doors and metal side panels. The finish is superb, and unlike some metal finishes, this is not too liable to show fingerprints. Concealed handles add to the sleek design, and make the fridge and freezer doors easy to open. Inside, there's a lot of space, especially in the upper fridge section. The LED lighting provides plenty of light, and the LED control panel at the top is easy to use.
The interior is mostly well-designed, with sturdy trays and shelves that are built to last. There's good storage on all levels, although the freezer space is limited compared to the fridge. A humidity-controlled crisper box provides plenty of capacity for vegetables and salad. Unusually, meat and fish are stored at the top in a special chillerbox area. This is the coolest part of the fridge and is intended to keep meat and fish freshest, but some people may find it strange to keep meat at the top, and it can be tricky to reach unless you're tall.
The glass shelves are removable, with the two middle shelves being adjustable in height, and there's an optional bottle rack. The door shelves have lots of capacity, but we're bothered by the low height of the upper shelves - we worry that glass bottles stored in the door may fall out if the door is slammed shut.
Finally, we'll note that this is a frost-free appliance, with automatic defrosting of fridge and freezer.
Efficiency, noise & reliability
The KGN39VL31G is rated A++ for efficiency - significantly above the A+ rating of most fridge-freezers. It's a quiet appliance too, with a 39dB noise level helping to reduce the ambient noise level in your kitchen.
Bosch is a very popular make and, like most German manufacturers, enjoys a strong reputation for reliability. The high quality finish of this fridge-freezer gives us confidence that it's built to last.
Conclusion - an excellent, well-priced product
Overall we're very impressed by the Bosch KGN39VL31G. It's an appliance that's very well built and will grace your kitchen. Clever design squeezes a lot of storage into a narrow space, and there are lots of features we like. It's well-priced too, and offers good value for money. It could have been a 5 star product, if it wasn't for one or two peculiar issues in the interior layout.
