If your budget lies between £400 and £500, you can expect to buy a truly excellent washing machine, providing you do your research carefully. Here at S21, we've already done the research for you. Choose from one of the following top picks of 2016 and you won't go far wrong.
1. Bosch WAT28460GB
This is the second year we've picked the Bosch WAT 28460GB as our star buy, and it's proving to be very popular, thanks to the German company's strong reputation for quality.
This is a well-priced, highly-featured product, and is one of the very best Bosch washing machines. With a generous 8kg wash load capacity, it's built for the needs of a demanding family.
Its energy efficiency rating is outstanding. In fact it exceeds the EU's maximum A+++ rating by another 30%, which is really just showing off!
It's one of the quietest washing machines currently available in the UK, making it an ideal choice if you don't have the luxury of a utility room for doing your laundry.
With VarioPerfect giving you a choice between speed or extra efficiency, plus a comprehensive range of wash programmes, it really is hard to beat.
2. Samsung WW80J6410CW
The Samsung WW80J6410CW washing machine was launched in 2015 and has dropped in price, bringing it into the under-£500 category this year. It's a stylish machine with a good 8kg capacity, making it able to handle a good-sized family load. The stylish LED display and rotary dial controls make it easy to use.
This model uses a digital inverter motor making it almost as quiet as the Bosch, and just as reliable, with a 10-year warranty on the motor. It even has a self diagnostic system with a fault check display.
Rated A+++ for energy consumption, it's cheap to run, and should last for many years, making it a strong buy.
3. Samsung WW80K6414QW
New for 2016, the Samsung WW80K6414QW is a smart washing machine with contemporary styling. Samsung has a good name in appliances, and we expect this machine to be a sound investment.
With a rotary dial and LED control panel, the machine is high-tech but easy to use. There's a wide choice of programmes, from a 30-minute quick wash to a Super Eco Wash.
The machine has an A+++ efficiency rating and a 1400rpm spin speed.
The inverter motor is super silent and comes with a 10 year warranty, so even though you'll pay a little extra for this model, it should last for many years.
And if you've ever wanted to add some socks to the wash after setting the programme, you can use the AddWash porthole to pop your extra laundry in even after the machine has started!

Does free standing mean you cannot put machine under a worktop please?

Freestanding means that it can be placed under a standard-height worktop. The opposite of freestanding is built-in/integrated.
