Best washing machine under £400 - 2016
By S21, 27 May 2016, last updated 17 Nov 2016
If you're willing to spend between £300 and £400 on a washing machine, you have a much greater choice than in the under-£300 range. Brands like Bosch and Samsung should be on your radar in this price bracket. The choice is wide, so we've picked the 3 best washing machines in this price range for 2016, updated in time for the Black Friday and Christmas sales.
Best buy: Bosch WAQ283S1GB from Hughes (£379.00)
1. Bosch WAQ283S1GB
German manufacturer Bosch enjoys a strong reputation for quality and reliability, and the Bosch WAQ 283S1GB is a mid-range machine with a lot going for it.
This is a very popular washing machine with a good family-sized 8kg capacity, a decent 1400 rpm maximum spin speed, and an incredible A+++ -30% efficiency rating. That means it uses 30% less energy than the EU's maximum A+++ rating, making it extremely cheap to run.
It comes with a wide range of programmes, including a Super Quick 15 minute freshen-up, and you can choose between speed and energy efficiency for each wash. There are handy features such as a 24 hour time delay and a child lock.
But the feature that we like best at S21 is the outstanding quietness of this washer. In both wash and spin modes, it's one of the quietest machines you can buy. This is the second year we've picked this model as our top buy in this price category.
2. Bosch WAN28100GB
Our second choice is also a Bosch!
New for 2016, the Bosch WAN28100GB cost over £400 when launched, but the price has now dipped and you should be able to find it for less than £400 if you shop around.
This is a smart, modern appliance from the German company's Series 4 range. It's easy to use, with a rotary dial and a clear LED display with touch controls.
The machine has a moderate 7kg capacity, suitable for smaller families, and is extremely energy-efficient, going beyond the A+++ maximum rating.
This model uses Bosch's EcoSilence drive, making it very quiet and reliable, and coming with a 10-year warranty on the motor.
With a 1400rpm spin speed, this is a very solid all-rounder and is highly recommended.
3. Hotpoint RPD9467J
Our third choice is the Hotpoint RPD9467J - a mid-range model from ever-popular manufacturer Hotpoint.
This washer has a very smart and modern design, with a hi-tech control panel and LCD display.
With a huge 9kg capacity, this appliance can cater for the biggest families, and is large enough to wash duvets. Injection technology makes it ideal for low-temperature washing, and it's able to reach 20% better than an A+++ energy rating.
The machine has 16 programmes available, including 20-minute and 40-minute quick wash options.
It's reasonably quiet in operation too, although not quite as silent as the Bosch washers. We'd say that this is one of Hotpoint's best washing machines.
