S21 Best TV awards 2014
By S21, 3 Dec 2014
We've reviewed close to 50 televisions this year from the 4 main manufacturers, and here we pick the best. This year, they're all from Samsung! Are we mad? Has the Korean company shipped us wads of used notes in brown envelopes? No. it's just that in 2014, Samsung has moved decisively ahead of Sony, LG and Panasonic, especially when it comes to price. We're hoping the others will catch up again in 2015, but this Christmas, we'll be dozing through the Queen's speech in front of a Samsung.
Best TVs of 2014
This 32 inch TV is one of the cheapest Smart TVs in Samsung's 2014 range and offers tremendous value. It's a good-looking TV with decent picture quality. The Smart TV functions are outstanding, and with built-in Wi-Fi and 3 HDMI ports, it doesn't compromise on connectivity either. Now available for under £300! The H6200 step-up model costs a little more but improves on picture quality.
This mid-range family-sized 40 inch TV costs less than £500 and is a compelling proposition. Picture quality in both 2D and 3D is quite respectable and probably the best you'll find at this price. The Smart TV is outstanding, as are the range of connectivity options. The H6670 step-up model is also highly recommended if you want to improve on picture quality.
2014 may be remembered as the year when 48 inch televisions finally became affordable. This 48-inch TV is our top pick. With local dimming and a fast 600Hz CMR it delivers fantastic picture quality, and comes with quadcore Smart TV and a full range of connectivity options too. And all for under £700!
55 inches is a wonderful size for family viewing if you have a big room and an ever bigger budget! Our top pick at this size isn't one that many will be able to afford - at close to £2,000 - but it's an almost perfect TV with UHD (4K) to make it future-proof. If this is out of your range, pick the H6670, which we also love.
