Best 50 inch TV of 2015
By S21, 26 Oct 2015, last updated 13 Dec 2015
The 48-inch to 50-inch size category has really delivered an impressive crop in 2015, and it's here that you'll find the best value. You can buy a 48-inch TV for as little as £500 this year, which is astonishing, and UHD TVs are selling for just £700. Of course, if you want the very best, you can spend a lot more, but even mid-range televisions are giving a lot.
1. Panasonic TX-50CX700B
Our top pick for 2015 is the astonishingly good Panasonic TX-50CX700B. This 50-inch UHD beauty delivers super-sharp, vivid images with loads of contrast and refined shadow detail. Motion control and viewing angles are excellent too.
Did we mention the TV's stunning design with its ultraslim surround and metal blade stand? Add in 3D capability and Smart TV, and you have an almost-perfect TV for under £1,000.
The CX700B is exclusive to Currys / PC World, but the very similar Panasonic 50CX680B is available at a wide range of retailers.
2. Samsung UE50JU6800
The Samsung JU6800 range launched just after we picked our top 3 favourites, so we've decided to update our choice of 50-inch TVs to include the 50-inch JU6800 TV.
Selling for under £1000, it offers superb value for money for a 50-inch UHD TV. It's the best of Samsung's Series 6 range, incorporating the company's new nano crystal technology for a more refined colour palette, and providing outstanding contrast levels and sharpness.
Input lag in Game Mode is low, making this a good choice for PS4/Xbox gaming, although it's not as fast as Samsung's more expensive Series 7 & 8 Tvs.
Other points to note are the 4 HDMI connections and excellent Smart TV, with mirroring of compatible smartphones.
With a slim brushed metal silver frame it looks the part too. It's a truly outstanding buy!
3. Panasonic TX-50CX802B
If you have money to spend and want the best, then we'd opt for the Panasonic TX-50CX802B.
This TV really has everything: a stunning design, with a metal arc stand; total image quality with rich, saturated colours, brightness, contrast, viewing angles and motion response; 3D viewing; superior audio; and excellent Smart TV. It will even support the new HDR standard via a firmware update.
It has everything. And the price? A hefty £1800, but well worth it!
Runner-up: Samsung UE48H6400
We're going to break the rules a little here, and include one of last year's models in our awards as a bonus choice.
Because if you're looking for a big screen TV and you're on a tight budget, then you can't really do any better than opt for this 48-inch 2014 model from Samsung.
This may not have UHD capability, but it has everything else, including excellent picture quality, 3D and Smart TV. The value here is simply unbeatable.
